How to to Deal With Slugs in Your Garden

Use cornmeal. Slugs love them some cornmeal and it makes them dead.

All you have to do is put a few tablespoons in a glass jar and put that jar on itís side close to your container garden.

It will attract the slugs. They will eat it and die. Simple and safe way to kill some slugs.

Use beer. Slugs are known alcoholics and canít resist beer. Dig a small hole and put a shallow dish in the hole. Fill it with beer.

The slugs will fall into the dish of beer and drown in the beer. I know some people that would love to go that way too.

I'm new here but all about gardening! Here's something to check out. You can build these yourself and they take all the work and maintenance out of gardening. Lots of salad....easy.

Well, they're just babies... we'll see how they do next year! I also planted some blueberry vines today. I've never done blueberries before so if anyone has any tips let me know. I've done grapes. I assume they're similar to grow.

Now this is right up my alley!!! I love gardening and have been doing it for years. It gets bigger and bigger every year. Last year I ventured into container gardening ... I learned the hard way I need to do the self-watering containers. This year I'm doing the recycled soda bottles for a hanging garden on and hanging over my deck. I'm also changing up my compost pile this year and we just got the stuff for building a cold frame! My good friend does plastic on hoops over her garden and keeps a garden going and going and going! I wanna be her when I grow up lol

I'm a little behind getting my stuff started as I normally have my stuff started in February but school has interfered greatly *sigh* but it'll be started completely by regular in the ground planting season hits. Of course we're hitting summertime temps here right now and I am afraid of what that means for this summer. I'm praying we can get the rain barrel started this spring as well so we can at least store up some water in case the garden needs it! We've had the stuff to do it but just haven't put it up yet (we didn't buy a pre-made one).

Do you have problem with little critters eating your garden before you can get to it? Do you want to jump start your garden because I know here in NJ it is not recommended to put most plants in the ground till May. Is your growing season short limiting what you can grow every year.

The solution? A cold frame! Basically a greenhouse with an open bottom, it can protect your plants from the elements and from animals. Because it acts like a greenhouse, you can start plants earlier in the year and keep them growing later into the year than normal.

Here is how to build one on the cheap:

This is awesome I just got almost halfway through planting my patio garden. I thought because I lived in an apartment that I couldn't do it but doing some research I found out that I could! I got two https://www.topsyturvy.com
things to grow tomatos, two types of peppers and a strawberry one. My girls got this www.growums.com/ and are growing a pizza garden. I am also about to plant some cucumbers, zuccini and herbs and beet roots and lettuce in a self watering planter that I got from Lowes. My patio looks amazing!!! (It wasn't letting me add a link for some reason.)

What a great idea!

I think I'm in on that house for rent so I might take my shot at gardening for this purpose.

I love chilies, tomatoes, squash and bell peppers which is what I will start off with.

I saw this on another team I am on.

The person wrote: "Here's another idea and I've tried this and it works. I borrowed it from Mother Earth News Magazine (my fav)..... take a potting soil bag and lay it flat. Cut out a rectangle on the top leaving 2" sides all around the bag. Kinda looks like a picture frame and the 2" you left around the edge holds the soil in the bag. Plant veggies or flowers or herbs that don't have a deep root system. I currently have leaf lettuce growing in mine. It is awesome! Fresh greens and no tilling!"

How easy and emoticon is that! Couldn't get an easier! emoticon

Thank you. I planned my layout last fall for the spring. I will have a flower, herb, veggie with a tomato and pepper garden. My new adventure will be to grow ginger - they have funky (in a 70's vernacular) flowers and can do well here after the frost - did we have winter -frost.

I appreciate these links and my granddaughter will plant yellow tomatoes and baby cukes - she is 3.

I love this! I used to garden... but have to admit, it was A LOT of work and time. Now I just have an herb garden. But my local health food store is hosting seeding seminars on Saturdays. I'm hoping to go on the 10th, and am hoping to also make friends that way. I've been in Texas almost 2 years and still don't really have any local friends. I think the health community is my best bet.

I think a thread of this sort would be helpful. If we grow it ourselves we know exactly what we are putting into our bodies. Organic is expensive but not if you grow it.

It is also a great way to get your children involved with Raw. Have them help out in the garden. As they watch the plants grow they will be anxious to taste their efforts.

Need Organic Sprouting Seeds:

Sprout People
We stock over 100 different varieties of seed. Every variety comes to us from sources which are certified organic (though we do still sell conventional broccoli as well as organic). We were first certified organic in the early 1990s, and we remain militant in our support of organics.

The more organic seeds we sell - the greater is our demand for organic seed - causing farmers to create a greater supply of organic seed to meet our greater demand - the greater the rate land is farmed organically - the greater the planet feels - the greater our childrenís childrenís children will feel.
