The "Just like Sugar Tabletop" has arrived. I like it better than Stevia (any variety) but not quite as well as Xylitol for drinks. I have not tried using it for baked goods yet. Given how extremely dangerous sugar alcohols (incl. Xylitol, Eryhtritol, Maltitol) are to pets I will probably stay with it for now. Very rarely I may have small amounts of real sugar if eating away from home. For me if I stay under 5 grams I don't seem to get cravings unless it's combined with wheat.

Don't give up totally on stevia. There are lots of brands of stevia from extracts to crystal forms. All of them taste a little different. There are kinds that I really don't like and others that work well. I also love sweets too much. But now, I'm old enough that the consequences of overdoing it just a little bit show up quickly and are very uncomfortable.

If I could only remember that when I'm feeling a little blue or tired or bored or lazy--that's when I indulge.

I am totally addicted to sugar. I also use products with aspartame along with Stevia Extract (drops)... I am trying to wean myself off of the aspartame, but some things have an after-taste. I can't eat sugar unless I intend to just fall off my program for that day because if I eat any I am a goner!... so I will just have to experiment with some other alternatives.

Thanks for the list. I don't really like stevia, I think I want to investigate Luo Han Guo, has anyone tried this one?

... I wish I didn't like sweet things! emoticon

Interesting stuff. I didn't know there were quite that many sweeteners around. I've heard of many of them, but there are many others that were new to me.

Fortunately, I'm not diabetic so I don't have to come up with alternatives. I also tend to have a salty tooth rather than a sweet tooth (which is good since I'm a partner in a confectionery!).

Since I'm primal, I'll try to use honey or maple syrup more often, but I'll also use cane sugar when appropriate. If I was adding something to my coffee or my tea daily, I'd probably look to something else, but luckily it's not a regular thing.

P.S. I realize that the blog is about what is paleo, but Mark Sisson says both honey and maple syrup are primal.

So now you've got me curious, what was it about this one you did not like? I wonder if I missed something since I also have to watch my blood sugar. It looked great from the description which is why I decided to give it a try.
It's half way down the article:
"Just Like Sugar Table Top – Natural Chicory root fiber (0% carbs, Paleo Sweetener)
Just like Sugar Table Top is my favorite natural Paleo sweetener. After testing hundreds of sweeteners I use it because it dissolves easily, it tastes like table sugar, and is easy to measure cup for cup—like table sugar. It also happens to be a zero-calorie, zero-carb granulated sweetener that can be used like sugar. It gently sweetens everything, and I get no sugar rush or aftertaste from it. The Table Top version gives the best flavor and texture in desserts. (Better than the Baking version) Let me say right away that I am not paid or endorsed by Just like Sugar in any way – I just love their sweetener. Read about my visit to check out their factory.

Just like Sugar Table Top is made of crystal chicory root that is 96% dietary fiber, mixed with calcium, Vitamin C, and pure orange peel. Orange peel is a highly concentrated sweetener 600 times sweeter than sugar! Chicory root fiber is high in fructo-oligosaccharides, which taste sweet but do not affect blood sugar or cause weight gain."

LOL! Yes, and that is what started my dilemma. I use the xylitol and did not know it was toxic to pets.
Thought I would change, but really no alternatives for me that I can see.
I am a diabetic; have pets; and am allergic to stevia. Doesn't' leave much.
Don't worry, thanks for your help.

If you like Stevia it might work well. I posted below I'm going to try a new sweetener. It may work for you.

Erythritol is pretty similar to Xylitol, not quite as sweet, also very toxic to pets, more expensive than Xylitol. Sometimes it's mixed with Stevia to make Stevia less bitter.

I have been using xylitol, not will have to look at something else. Can't use stevia as I have an anaphylactic reaction. Also being a diabetic, I avoid the 'real' sugars. What is the erythritol like?

I used to be a serious sugar addict. But I think I can now handle very small amounts of sweeteners without cravings. It will still increase my carbs a little so I do it occasionally, like in dark chocolate or a bit in mint tea.
I decided to try the sweetener that is made from chicoree mentioned in the article called " Just like sugar Tabletop". It should get here in a week and I will report what I think of it. emoticon

Yeah, well. I'm not a sugar addict. I enjoy some stevia and erythritol now and then. Nothing wrong with that.

I cannot seem to access the link but I don't believe in any sweeteners at all. If you are a sugar addict as I am a single hint of something like the addictive substance can send you over the edge into eating it. Honey, agave, aspartame etc etc avoid them all.

Thanks, that is quite an extensive list including several sweeteners I have never tried. Maybe I'll find something to replace Xylitol with, I always worry about my pets getting into stuff made with it.

Thanks ANI! I like how the article lists the % of carbs AND that AGAVE is NOT pale. So, many paleo recipes on the internet use agave. I always think... what the heck???
And then I substitute in something else, like honey, maple syrup. But I try to use stevia whenever possible and when texture isn't an issue.
