I've come to the reluctant conclusion that any "informative" articles posted on SP are riddled with old data and faulty base logic. It's so unfortunate, because SP could be doing such a service to a wide swath of the public who are otherwise at a loss to filter good from questionable "science." But it's simply not to be. We have to research for ourselves, and then never deign to offer any of our own findings openly since they will immediately engender squelching by staffers espousing the "official line" still promoted by specialty groups and commercial interests. I suppose dietitians don't have to adhere to the basic medical tenet of "first, do no harm."

As for coconut oil, yes, I use it in every form I can get it, and for nearly every use I can envision. I do buy the minimalist form, and cold- or expeller-pressed. A bit more expensive, but worth it. Great stuff. I can't promote it enthusiastically enough!

I've seen a lot of really good recipes - usually posted by low carbers or paleo/primal dieters. Just got to pick & choose. I was really happy to see that we can change our carb/protein/fat values in the nutrition tracker. That will be very helpful. FitArtist often posts links to good recipes or enters a Spark recipe. Make sure to follow that as she is quite knowledgeable about the program. JazzID is another one to follow for recipes!

Sometimes SparkPeople will change things on the site that I will miss. I always appreciate when someone lets me know about the changes that assists my choice of nutritional plans. Just by posting your comment SassIsis, I found a bit more info - thanks for sharing!

Yeah. Like their recipe of the day.
Gross! Whole wheat pasta with low fat cheese, skim milk, LIGHT butter (what's that!!!) and turkey bacon topped with more whole wheat bread crumbs.
Yuck!

I read it and thought it was biased. I am becoming more and more frustrated with certain aspects of Spark as they seem to be buying into mainstream medias/SAD mythology. Sigh. But as was stated previously. I do like their trackers. Helps to keep my ratios honest and my carbs in check. Also love some of the recipes! bison etc.

Things I need to do today:

2. Breathe out

I thought it was interesting that there were no comments allowed on the article. I can't imagine that it would have led to any sort of constructive discussion. emoticon

The pejorative "caveman", in quotes no less, was telling too. Of course then SP fires up an article about 13 ways to get more protein in your diet which was pretty much 12 dishes with boneless skinless chicken breasts, rice and beans and one bonus dish of just rice and beans.

In any case, I don't really mean to slam SP too much since I generally enjoy the site, use their tools, and ignore the incorrect info. My own bloodwork can attest to the fact that removing all seed oils and only using saturated fat (well, olive oil too especially on salads ... LOL) is what works for me.

I use coconut oil for all my curries and other dishes where the flavor is complementary. I also use it daily for seasoning my cast iron pans.

Despite Ms. Hand's assertions to the contrary, lauric acid is good for you too.

I was disappointed by the article. She decided to only report 1 view/1study of coconut oil rather than to also report the studies & testimonials of all those people who have been helped by the regular consumption of CO. She adds a note on the health benefits of olive oil without reporting on the problems with the fact that most olive oils are rancid & those that are not, will become rancid using higher heat settings.

My recommendation to SparkPeople & their employees is for them to do better research & stop trying to just repeat the information of close-minded mainstream physicians with selfish motives. You do more harm than good using these reporting methods.

As for your last question, yes coconut oil is a staple. I consume anywhere from 1 to 3 tablespoons a day. My friend who is an ANP working under an MD recommended the 3 tablespoons each day. I also use it on my skin & have just been reviewing information on oil pulling (which I previously thought was crazy). I do my own research & never take just 1 person's or group's word for anything.

My impression of all the nutrition articles here is that the authors are fat-phobic instead of being fat-informed.

Spark also believes it's healthy to eat 8-10 servings of grain per day, so what do they REALLY know.

Fat and saturated fat doesn't make you fat or cause clogged arteries. In fact it's the very foods that SPARK thinks is healthy (all those WHOLE GRAINS, low fat dairy and beans! Yes! Lots of BEANS!!!) that is making us all fat.
If Spark keeps us fat, then they keep us Sparking and clicking on their "Weight Watchers" ads. lol

Also, coconut oil is the ONLY oil to actually contain only 7 calories per gram. Not 9.
I know, I know. It's incredible but TRUE!

Got this in the Weekly Spark email edition. I use Olive Oil for cooking, however, do use coconut milk for baking, sauces, soups and use Almond/Coconut mixed milk for my power smoothies. What is your take on Spark's review of the data? Is Coconut a fat staple in your diet?
