No grain, legumes or sugar. Usually only hungry enough to eat twice. Thinking very little about, not stressing about weight. Just want to eat healthy for my trillions of cells to perform correctly. Doing some primal movements and walking. Not stressing about exercise. Making time to play.

I had some luck with intermittent fasting but only for a short time. I've heard it may work better for men than women, due to stress and hormonal issues. Sometimes I'm good with it, other times it stresses me out and is probably counter productive.

I had a plateau around the first of the year. It lasted about three months and was seriously frustrating. It's a good time to re-evaluate and tweak things when this happens, but I suspect it's ultimately about the body regrouping and trying to hold that space in the cupboards open any way it can. IE it's just not ready to let go of more weight and needs time to adjust to the idea. Rather than fight it, I've shifted my focus a bit and am alternating between six week programs of weight loss efforts and six week maintenance attempts. After all, I really could use the practice at the latter and it gives my body time to regroup.

It also gets my mind off the frustration for a time and prepares me for the future. Eventually, I'll have to learn to live without the excitement of the scale moving up or down. Might as well get in some experience now. After six weeks of holding steady, losing another five pounds isn't quite so much like pulling teeth.

I eat the BAB and either a little for lunch or dinner by 3pm. IF the other meal without hunger or craving.

emoticon Hello team!

I was wondering has anybody given intermittent fasting a try? I decided to try it a couple of months ago and only ate dinner for a week. It pulled off 4 pounds and helped jumpstart my weight loss again.

What do you all think about that? Is it an okay method? I know Mark recommends it, but was curious what y'all thought...

Might be wise sadly to cut down on fruit and certanily nuts (I eat the bag when I buy them - about 900 calories of pecan nuts). I was also amazed at how many of my calories were from fruit which I love and my body can feel is so good for me so I need to be careful over that as I want to lose not maintain weight.

I would not worry about protein. Very very few people can eat enough protein to put on weight through that source.

May be move more too.

I know how frustrating plateau's are! While I'm certainly not a nutritionist, speaking for myself if I eat over 50 - 100 carbs a day I stall... in the book the Primal Blueprint, Mark recommends 50 - 100 for weight loss and 100-150 for maintenance. The only time I eat fruit is right before a work out. I also limit nuts to 1 oz every other day. The ideal carb count for me when I'm on a roll, like right now :) is 40ish. Personally my total calories can't exceed 1200 for weight loss. Good luck!

Well, I just don't go along with that theory. Maybe they are pointing at all the protein powders and protein supplements people often take which really, most all of them, are NOT healthy. In my opinion, protein consumed in its natural state (meat, eggs, nuts, seeds, etc.) isn't, in itself, going to put weight on you. Isolated protein, like the kind in most protein powders, is very stressful on the body and might just cause a person to store fat--that's just a guess. I think a lot of people try to get too much protein thinking that it somehow will help them to build muscle and loose weight--I don't believe that. I think it's a marketing trick. Protein powder manufacturers compete to get the most protein with the least amount of calories in their products. They end up just making highly processed junk which our bodies simply can't deal with.
When will we learn?? Natural is best.

That happens a lot. If you stick to that routine you will start losing again. Are you getting enough fats?

Hello! I'm new to Primal (2nd week) and have already lost 6 lbs just by cutting out pasta, rice, ceral, etc. My fiancee and I have been loving the resources and recipes we've been finding online, and are excited to keep this up! Makes so much sense, and tastes so good. :-)

Day 26 but no real weight loss in 3 weeks. So frustrating. I have been diligent on counting my carbs and being strict. My Primal buddy pointed out I am prob. eating too many nuts and too many fruits. But that is why I count carbs too.

But I do feel healthier. I am eating cleaner and I definitely am becoming a much better cook!
So I know that everything is going in the right direction. I just need to figure out the right sweet spot for me to lose weight. I hate counting carbs. I want this to be a lifestyle instead of a diet and right now it feels like a diet.

I borrowed my buddy's cookbook and 21 day transformation book. Unfortunately she only gave me 2 days to look them over. So I am going to get them on Amazon!

Happy Good Friday 2012

Hello Peeps,

I weighed in this morning at 185 again! So annoying since I started the Paelo Diet 22 days ago and lost weight immediately. but stopped losing after the first week. In week number two I started my period and had severe sleep issues. I thought after my TOM I would have lost a couple of pounds and gone down to 183 especially since I was in the two week window of detoxing and having so many other side effects giving up grains, breads and processed foods. I even had to call in sick 3 days last year and was out of the office from Tuesday-Friday. My last day of TOM was Friday and I was still at 185-186 and now a week later I am still at 185.

This is very strange since I have been counting my carbs and sticking with 100-130 grams a day. This is considered the best carb amt. for losing the maximum amt. of fat. I even wore my heart monitor on Wed. and my heart weight was high. (90 BPM during my rest times) during the 4 hrs I wore it (including during Pilates) I burned 1200 calories. This is considerably high for not doing any intense exertion. But no extra weight loss.

I am seeing some definition to my abs and my legs do look like they have less cellulite but I would think this would translate to WT loss too.

Today I still lowered my carbs but added in a little grain for dinner and yesterday's dinner too. Maybe I need to add it a bit to reduce the LBS. Will have to wait and see.

On your Nutrition page scroll down (below the food you have logged and a lil further) until on the right hand side you see a button that says Change Nutrition Goals. Click it and you can change any of your nutrition goals there anytime.

Hope this helps.

Oh, wow, I don't think I remember what I did! No, I didn't have to say I wasn't diabetic, since I'm only insulin resistant anyway. I'll see if I can figure it out.

Huh..I've seen that carbs for low carb diets thing on the tracker but have yet to use it. Didn't take me long at all to ditch the diabetes recommendations (which I think went up to 300-some grams of carbs!) and tweak my tracker to what I felt was reasonable for me. Admittedly, this changes a bit from time to time. I try to take the good things on this site and use them to my advantage while trying (not always successfully) to ignore the stuff we know is just plain wrong.

Oh, and to add to my crazy-long monologue, Karen, you mentioned the SP guidelines for carbs? They're based on the FDA's guidelines, which are pretty much the opposite of the Primal/Paleo ethos. I just went in and manually tweaked my nutrient trackers until they looked like what I wanted to eat. In fact, there's actually a nutrient category "carbs (for low carb diets)" that you can track on SP. I use that one, personally.
It can all seem really confusing at first, but to echo what everyone else has been saying: reduce your sugar and grain intake (heck, just cut out/reduce wheat consumption when you're first starting out) and stay away from processed foods and you're definitely going to be on the right track. You can mess with all of the specific "this food is good" and "this food is bad" later on, if you want to.

I've been Primal (with some dairy-free Paleo-ish bouts) for about a year and a half. I eased into it and it's been a pretty easy process for me because I allowed myself that slow transition.

The first thing I did was reduce the sugar and grains that I was eating. That first week, I'd already done my grocery shopping before deciding to try this Primal thing, so if I had a sandwich, I had it open faced. I aimed for a month-long average of 150g of carbs, daily and slowly cut back on my sugar and grains as time progressed. I also allowed myself planned splurges, like a scone and a latte for breakfast on payday, back then. Now, I average under 100g of carbs a day and I've found that many of my old splurges aren't really tasty to me anymore. Don't get me wrong, I do allow myself splurges (sorry, but I hate the word "cheat"), but they usually send me right back to my "normal" Primal eating habits the next day. I follow Sisson's "80/20" healthy living v. splurge ratio and it suits me perfectly.

My advice for anyone thinking about trying this kind of eating is to give it a shot for a week. Eat a reduced amt of sugar and grains from what you usually eat (if you want to try total elimination, go for it), and see how you look and feel. For me, after a week of pseudo-Primal, my lower belly was less puffy and my face looked thinner too (I checked with my husband, just in case I was imagining it!). If you liked your results with the reduced sugars and grains, then you can refine your diet further to reduce/eliminate added sugars and grains, if you want to. That's also the time to start trying to raise your protein intake and fat intake too (if you've been doing the low fat thing). Personally, I don't really worry about how much fat I eat. To me, that's incidental to how many calories and grams of protein and carbs I'm eating.

Also, there are a TON of Paleo and Primal recipe sites and books out there, if you want to find replacements for some of your fave foods that you'd miss if you ditched grains. I'm happy to share those with any of y'all, if you'd like them.

Hi Karen,
Great that you came by to check it out. I think that you are over analizing at this stage and that can be very intimidating. Primal is a little more forgiving than Paleo to my understanding. In Mark Sisson's book Primal Blueprint he breaks it down nice and easy to understand. Then do as Linda suggests and just start eating 'clean' healthier choices, dont sweat the carbs etc, until you feel you are ready.
You will feel amazing my friend.
Hugs,
Angela

You could start by just eating "clean" and not worrying too much about the carbs right away. Maybe aim for staying under 100 a day or so. That should be doable. Good luck!

I'm just learning and reading up on Grok/primal/paleo eating. I'm not sure I can do this, I'm not sure how it fits in with SP, which says I 'should' eat 198-260 g of carbs per day. I honestly had more grams of carbs for breakfast this am than the 50 that MDA says...whew.

I think I have a lot to learn about this. I have lots of support at home, which is good...I'll be poking around and trying to learn for a bit here...

Just noticed cave talk, great idea.

I started my second Whole 30 on January 1st and did pretty well. The I had been struggling with paleo for about 2 weeks. I'd stick to the plan and then cheat/binge for a day or two. But all has been well since Tuesday. It is not unusual for me to go 5-6 days w/o straying from paleo guidelines but what is different is that I've not been having carb/sugar cravings like usual. More and more paleo is becoming part of who I am.

Thanks Linda!
I am finding the team very useful, wish it had a bit more action, but maybe I am missing the area that there is activity. I am enjoying the Primal diet and cooking more and more healthful. Surprisingly my Blood sugars are fantastic on this diet, so my Dr should only be happy. But he is a great guy all around and Iucked out.
Hope your A1C goes well too.
Hugs,
Angela

Hi Angela! Hope you find the team useful. I'm glad your doctor is being reasonable. If only they could all stop pushing the "healthy whole grains"! I have a hard time believing they think primal could be a bad thing, although I can understand their thinking that it takes things a bit further than necessary. It must be tough being a type 1 diabetic. Hope all goes well with your A1C.

HI Linda!
Nice to meet you too. Thank you I went over and joined the team, will have a look around as soon as I can.
Hope your tests all go well. I am due for my A1C soon as well, need to go and get it done. I am a type 1 diabetic and am learning to eat Primal, my Dr said to go for it. Which is great as they don’t usually.
Hugs,
Angela

Hi Angela,

Nice to "meet" you. The team has the same name as the book -- Primal Body Primal Mind. I don't think I ever exercise too much, but I have an inner thigh injury that slows me down on some things. Next month I find out about blood sugar and cholesterol and all that fun stuff. I'm having my first A1C done. Hope it comes out OK!

Hi Linda!
Thank you for answering, I truly appreciate it.
I could be stricter with my diet; I am losing inches; and my blood sugars are great! I just am not seeing the scale move. I exercise very well, sometimes maybe too much, but hey I am moving.
I appreciate the recommendation of Nora Gedgaudas, which team is based on hers?
Thanks so much Linda.
Take care,
Angela

I'm insulin resistant/prediabetic. My scale doesn't tend to move, but I may not be strict enough with my diet. I'm considering that Nora Gedgaudas, who wrote Primal Body, Primal MInd, might be right in advocating a high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb approach. I haven't read the book yet, but a lot of people really like it. There's a team based on it. It's very small, but the message boards are pretty informative.

I do track my food, but don't really care about the calories. I'm now aiming for about 80 grams of protein, slightly more of fat, and carbs under 50 or so. I do tend to eat out more often than I probably should, which makes tracking difficult.

Ok I am jumping in here with Marg.

This doesn't seem to be to an active a team. I have a question and hope someone will have some input.

'Has anyone been doing Primal as a Diabetic and not noticed the scale moving?' Any advice? My blood sugars are great, I lose inches, but just want to know how long before the scale moves and if anyone has had this happen. Any diabetics?'

thanks,
Angela

I'm fairly new to Primal eating. Just finished reading the 21 day challenge and am eating from the Primal Quick/Easy Meals cookbook.

I do the Spark Nutrition tracker and I am trying to figure out what my Nutrition Goal Targets should be.... especially Fat grams. I see where Mark refers to 100 grams/day but that seems high to me. For the past 5 days, these are my averages....

Fat = 108 g
Protein = 100g
Carbs = 55g
Calories = 1621

Do any of you track? And what are your nutrition goals?

Thanks.... Marg

XOXOXO

Staying on track by finding new ways to cook the same foods. There are lots of options out there and if I'm bored I'll just find a new option like coconut mango mixed together and frozen for a new twist

About the bark -- Rob Thompson has a very simple recipe for chocolate almond clusters with just good dark chocolate and toasted almonds. Haven't tried it yet, but want to soon. It's in his Glycemic Load Diet book.

Happy New Year one and all - after 9 days off and to much fun it is time to get back to the primal lifestyle - I did slip but only for a week or so which is such an improvement. I feel so yucky right now that I am looing forward to the doing the 30 day primal challenge. All the gluten/grains are gone from the house an a new year has a new pantry!

What are you doing to stay? or get back on track?

Things I need to do today:
1. Breathe in
2. Breathe out

paleobark - good dark chocolate, coconut oil, cinnamon, roasted hazelnuts, roasted cashews. I don't remember the quantities. Top with chopped nuts.

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency.
