I just started a personal challenge earlier today. It doesn't eliminate ALL the foods (and in a few food regards it goes further), but it does eliminate most, and it adds in a few things I need to do in my personal life.

Got rid of the ticker cuz my scale decided to flatter me unduly. I haven't re-gained, just got a better, honest, scale.

Just because you steam it, doesn't mean you can't add herbs and spices. (A gripe at those insipid restaurant "healthy choice" menu selections.)

I'll check out the daily challenge threads, but just wanted to say that I am in on this challenge! Started eating Paleo full-swing on January 1, 2012. Would love accountability and chats with other like-minded cavemen and cavewomen!

Hi I am in too please!!! I just found this group today and for 6 weeks before Christmas I also went Primal and dropped all sugar and grains...I felt amazing. I am just starting back on this way of eating again since the 2nd, so I would love to join this thread. I am just getting over a cold right now so I have not been able to workout for the last few days, but as soon as I can breathe again, I will be all over that too!
Thanks,
Michelle

I'm in! I've been primal for about 2 years but have been sliding off the tracks over the past year. The Holidays is what really killed me. My body has been letting me know about all the negative side-effects by extreme inflamation. The past couple of months felt like I'm 60 (I'm 26). My hip has been acking and my lower back has been killing me.
2012 resolution is to claim my health back!

I've also started GAPS diet on 1/2 which conforms to Primal Blueprint style very closely but is a little bit more strict in certain areas. Day 3 is going great and my inflamation is already starting to subside.

How much do you really want it?

I'm jumping around in the book a bit as some of it reiterates what is in "The Primal Blueprint" handbook. I've been all the way Primal before so this is more of an intense refresher course for me. I am so glad I saw the post over on MDA. Looking forward to getting to know everyone and setting the course not only for 2012 but for life.

Cheers, all!

Hi Everybody. I'm in!! My hubby and I started a 30 Day Primal Challenge this morning to get us back on track. We started eating this way last year and it is FABULOUS but we sort of went off the rails for the holidays. emoticon .

Glad to be back at it. Happy new year all!!!

Hi folks! Gentle walking will take care of the excess sugar. I am going for a short walk this morning, as soon as it warms up a bit.

I just ordered the book and it should be here any day now, but I have the basic idea of what I should be doing since I frequent MDA.

So, we post in this thread for challenge-related posts? I was confused by earlier posts saying something about posting in other existing threads.

I'm so excited that I found this group and this challenge! Everyone I talk to (including my husband) about going primal looks at me like I'm crazy for wanting to cut out grains ("but you neeeed them for fiber! How are you going to get enough energy to exercise if you're not eating enough carbs!?").

Saw this challenge on JustBirdy's blog and plan to participate. Am I penalized by the sugar sitting in my veins, liver, wherever from holiday overload.? Can I handicap that?

I put the thread in the Primal Exercise section, mostly because it was pretty empty. I can't change the major headings titles, unfortunately.

I'm already pretty primal, but I'm a pescatarian and have been getting lazy about making healthy lunches of late. I've also been on a daily dark chocolate/alcohol habit since the holidaze hit. Will be nice to have some accountability!

Thanks, Jonelle. I'm excited to start!!

I have a bit of an update for everyone, however. I just learned yesterday that I have a job interview late next week. In the interests of (ahem) wearing my interview suit comfortably, rather than gliding into the 21-day challenge, I am sprinting in. I have decided to do Intermittent Fasting (one meal a day) from now until the interview. That one meal will be low carb from now until Monday, then Primal Monday and after. I know from past experience that the tummy bloating I am experiencing is from too many carbs, and this will do the trick to make sure my suit buttons comfortably..

(FYI -- this is not my ultimate nice suit, but my bought-a-while-back-because-my-nice-slim-s
uit-is-woefully-too-tight suit. I'm looking forward to wearing a lot of my nicer slim work clothes this summer.)

I will be doing a 3 month challenge (strength training/cardio) starting January 1st... I will also do this for the nutritional and exercise guidelines, but it will go beyond the 21 days.

NUTRITIONAL:

Eating prmal/paleo 80% of the time, but incorporating healthier choices of non-paleo/primal carbs for days that I workout more intensely to get more calories in.

FITNESS:

I will do the following:

Sprinting: As far as sprinting, I can't do that, so I opt for HIIT workouts, that's the closest to a sprint I am going to get.. and these workouts are short, like 20 minutes.... or I will use my Gymboss and do Tabata's for 4 minutes at a time.

Strength training: I will do split strength training 3X's a week, well

Strength training or Lift heavy:
3 days Split ST sessions - AND- try to do a 1 day dedicated body part strength training

Cardio - Longer/slower workouts & playing/having fun:
3 or 4 days of cardio, but will consist of longer workouts, whatever I like, kickboxing, boxing, etc., but staying within my fat burning zone.

Sprints (... substitutes): 1 or 2 days of HIIT or Tabata intervals...

PS: ... hooping is a wondeful workout, I have a couple of dvds, I have to pull them out.... great for the burning fat and the waist!

Sounds like the thread a day is the winner. Does anyone know -- if we use the old threads, do they jump up to the top, so they're visible?

Either way :)

Whether we use the previously created threads or start new ones, I just like the idea of a day at a time to focus on each challenge as it comes and time to ponder each new step. In their own thread, it just seems neater than one long one for 21 days. If I were doing it on my own, I would probably just use one thread to discuss it but if we are going as a group - one per day seems easier.

My pre-challenge step is: tonight is garbage night. I'm re-cleaning the pantry and fridge!

Hi Jonneller--As I think about it, the idea of re-using the threads is neat. They are already created, AND they give a sense of history and richness. There is no doubt that the previous challenges will have generated some of the same phenomena and observations, and then for newcomers who just missed the group challenge, they can still have an extra-rich and central reference should they decide to go it alone and not wait for a group effort. I like it, speaking for myself.

SUSIEQ_AZ1, Thanks for following up. I think that the thread a day would work better, because we could hold to the topic better, and I, for one, would be able to go back to the Day Thread that corresponded to anything in the book if I wanted to see how others were doing or responding.

Does that sound good to other people?

Or we could use the previously created threads? Since there are different challenges every day, it could be good to have them broken out by day. May be less confusing than have them all in one thread.

Joy, we could just post updates on this thread. I'm new here, but I do see that the last time they had a challenge, they posted a new thread each day, i.e. MDA challenge Day 1. What does everyone think? One thread? Or one a day?

This is great. I'm already pretty primal, but could use some accountability!

I will join in! I got the book in the mail friday. I cleaned out my pantry several weeks ago but some things still linger (rice noodles and such... some crackers). I'll ponder some pre-challenge goals and post them in the next couple of days.

Hi,

Mandie and I decided to team up and start a challenge 1/1/12 (could we be any more cliche?) If anyone wants to join us, drop a note here.

My goals are:

0. Reduce sugar, eat more protein, and reduce between-meal snacks from now until 1/1/12. Develop a strength routine on my new (used) Total Gym. Schedule regular times to walk with friends.

1. Eat lots of animals, insects and plants: Eat primal (I am already gluten-free)
2. Move around a lot at a slow pace: Walk several times a week at the lake in my neighborhood or at the beach (I'm lucky); ride my bike or walk for neighborhood errands
3. Lift heavy things.: Strength training with my Total Gym 2-3 times a week and/or bodyweight workout
4. Run really fast every once in a while: Do sprints once a week (when I walk)
5. Get lots of sleep.: Go to bed at a decent hour, start using my progressive (light) alarm clock again, eliminate "screen" time in late evening.
6. Play: Dance (for now, using a video), hooping
7. Get some sunlight every day: Take short walk breaks while working (I work from home), ;take my vitamin D
8. Avoid trauma: Stretch on Total Gym to avoid injury
9. Avoid poisonous things: Eliminate sugar
10. Use your mind: Work my business plan for my new business.

My birthday is 5/29, and my long-term goal is to treat myself to some great summer clothes for my birthday. emoticon

Edited to say I updated this to begin on 1/2/12 because I got to the part of the book where it says to start on a Monday.
