My daughter was recently visiting and declared her new fav habit is a kale green smoothie. I think part of the catch is to make sure everything is really fresh. These ingredients make a fabulous smoothie. She's gone home, but her smoothie recipe is my new fav.

kale
celery
celantro
fresh apple
enough apple juice to blend.

I want to try adding lime, but I've been enjoying this combination so much that I wanted to share.

Good read. I am doing kale this morning and have a nice ripe banana on hand. My DH likes green smoothies, as long as they are not with kale. It must be strong.

Ok I'm sold, I'll add the banana. Here's the kicker!!!! I left the darn thing in the freezer and came to work without it. I can tell you I was almost in tears!!!!!! Oh well, good thing I have a hardy salad and a banana for later on. emoticon
My partner at work looked at me as I came walking in and said....."uhhhh where's your smoothie cup, you always have it in your hand" This darn storm has me rattled!

I agree with Yvonne. Bananas are magic. In general I like kale. The first kale smoothie I made was really rough. I was trying not to add banana, I have no idea why. After a few sips I gave up and added a banana and it was like night and day. Truly magic!! I like strawberries, 1 banana (usually frozen), and 200 g kale. I make one big batch of smoothie for the day with 200g of greens. This usually needs 2 cups of water. I blend that and then add 1 banana and strawberries to taste and blend again. Usually about 100g strawberries. I tend to do everything by weight because I think it is more accurate than measuring cups. raspberries in place of or in addition to the strawberries are good too. I find the strong taste of raspberries and strawberries work well to hide the "grass" taste. I love eating pineapples but I don't find the taste strong enough for smoothies. I used to use almond milk but then i tried water and really didn't notice a difference. I figure water saves me the hassle of making almond milk twice a week. It really isn't that much of a hassle but it was one more thing to do.

Also put some BABY spinach in with the kale. That will help the taste. I often mix and match and never get bored. Lol. Tx for going organic!

No all my greens and fruit are organic for my smoothies. I don't usually put bananas in them but will try it. Thanks for all the suggestions

Its not going backwards to listen to where you are at. One step at a time. Is this prepared packaged kale organic? Doing leafy greens that are commercially grown could be part of the problem. Organic kale that is fresh will probably taste different to you. Its in season. Try it.

Ok try with 1 banana and 2 cups kale and it should be delish. The banana is the magic ingredient as long as it is ripe, you need to see brown spots.

Ok will try without the almond milk and increase the fruits, I just feel like that's going almost backwards cause when I started it was 2 cups fruit 1 c green, now it's 1 c fruit and 2-3 cups greens.

The Kale is curly, but comes already chopped in a bag so the stems are gone.

Yup I would get rid of the almond milk and just use filtered water. Try adding a banana or at least bump up the pineapple. Banana plus water is a great Raw replacement for almond or any kind of milk.

If you are using curly kale, make sure you are stripping the stems, that may be where the bitterness is coming in. Otherwise the Green Smoothie should be delish. Dinosaur kale or Lacinato kale are more mild than curly kale.

What kind of kake? Take out the almond milk reduce the amount of kale add more fruit.

Kale is actually my favorite (except for Tuscan kale). The one I avoid is Swiss Chard....not a fan but will eat it if the only other green available, plus it's beautiful.

I don't have that problem with kale, but do feel that way about mustard greens. I think it was Yvonne who tipped that adding pineapple helps, so I do that, I also tend to add more berries (unsweetened) and sometimes a few slices of mango. For me, that helps. Maybe you could try other fruits to add to the kale to change it up and make it taste better/more exciting etc.?

Today is a Kale Green Smoothie day. I'm usually not super excited for those days (about every 4). I quit adding any sweetner to my smoothies several weeks ago and just use the fruits and veggies (besides the protein powder) and usually LOVE my green smoothies. BUT on Kale day, I don't exactly love them. Ok I have to admit they fill me up more on kale day, sometimes I can't even finish them, I KNOW how good kale is for you and will NOT stop adding it to my green smoothies, but on kale day, my green smoothie tastes more and more like grass. I've gotten them where I add more greens than fruit (this was a process and I'm not going back on it) and I know it's healthy. Just wondering if anyone else has this Kale ho hum attitude. Like I said I KNOW how awesome it is for you and will never quit adding it, but I'm just not as excited to drink it.

Today was fresh pineapple, frozen cherries and KALE!!!! Oh and plain almond milk.

Just curious is anyone else has the ho hum like of kale.
