The Palo Verde trees are all in bloom with lots of small yellow blossoms with lots of yellow pollen blowing around. Allergies have attacked every one here. yuk

I've been looking at all my flower pots and know I'll have to leave some of the heavier one ones here. The will cost way too much to ship. but the ones I'll leave are not the best ones anyway.

It's been cloudy and windy today and supposed to be rain tonight. Well - heard that one before.

Am checking on how to move to MN without spending $3000 -- means I won't be able to take the large plants, but should be able to take some cuttings to start up there.

There are birds in trees outside/around the building/grounds -- can hear them chirping sometimes. Course, never able to see new ones. darn

Good deal with the two orchids that are hanging in there, Echo! Hope they continue to thrive! I did a walk about yesterday and enjoyed the heavy scent of the lilacs that have burst into bloom. I noticed that the Alums, Iris, Poppies and Snowball bushes are all just on the verge of blooming. The grape arbors are leafing out too ... everything is coming to life again except my front porch which I can't seem to get motivated to even clean up with all the wind and rain we keep getting. Usually I have containers planted and everything swept and washed down! Oh well ... I'm also anxious to get my windows washed but don't see the point when they will be all muddy again as soon as I'm done ... I guess that's a task for another day or week!

Hi -- well, my last orchid from Mom's Memorial -- When I got it - had two blooms plus one bud. The bud bloomed a couple weeks ago. Now the oldest blossom has dropped. The second one is starting to wilt. the third one should last awhile yet. Of the ones that are dormant -- I think only two are going to survive - but I'm not giving up on them yet. The leaves are still good looking so -- we'll see.

Gem - I really hope you post pics on the progress of your garden as it comes to Life! The growing cycle is so cool! I think that's why I love my flowerbeds even though often I find it hard to keep up with them!

Echo - I was thinking of you the other day while trying to select something for my mom for Mother's Day. The orchids where I was shopping were just beautiful. I suspect for the rest of my life when I see an orchid it will make me think of you.

Wishing everyone joy and happiness on this special day ... ~Eda

The pots with orchids are all sitting in the sink - draining from being watered really well. Still don't know what's going to happen with a couple of them. Just going to keep on watering them. Have to mix up some orchid fertilizer and treat them.

A square foot garden sounds really neat. I'm hoping - if I have a balcony or patio I can have a couple of those really big pots to put one of those huge climbing bush teeny tomato bushes and then some flowers around it.

Well, I'm sitting here, coffee in hand thinking of you, Echo. I LOVE the Tucson area (my parents live in Green Valley). Sad to hear about the cacti - they don't exactly grow back quickly.....

My square foot garden is IN and doing nicely. I'll be moving the strawberries next year - they are finally threatening to invade the entire box....

On the menu this year (if they all make....):
green peppers
tomatoes
zucchini
swiss chard
eggplant
okra - though only one seedling made it.....
and a mess of herbs (sage, oregano, chives, parsley, basil, etc.)
Oh, and the strawberries....

Any one else square foot garden? This is only our second year, but I'm loving it so far!

Have a great Friday everyone!

You are all welcome to come see the flowers. I noticed the lilac bush is getting ready to bloom ... is right on the verge. Soon the snowball bushes will bloom and everything will be wonderful. I have a few more rose bushes that really need to be pruned but not sure if I am going to make it out to them this year ... and the grape arbors probably need some attention but not sure about them either. I'm going to continue to enjoy the bulbs and the beautiful cherry trees in bloom right now ... I love being home!

Paula - I've got coffee but would be a little short on chocolates if you came by ... stock up first, ok? And bring enough to share! emoticon emoticon

In walking around the grounds of the apts -- they look so barren (well what do you expect of the desert, anyway) -- that last really hard freeze we had (which set a record for here) actually killed most of the cacti -- a lot of them were quite large and nice. Now they are cut down to the ground. They sure were a mess. All over town there's oodles that have not been cut down even yet. I did not want to see another cactus, but not really that way.

Well -- I tried -- I was given an African Violet -- was really nice -- except I have never had any luck with African Violets. Another lady said she'd like it -- besides she has "northern" exposure and that's what African Violets need. Well - what do I know -- so I gave it to her. She needs a friend - sure it will be a good companion for her. :) :) :)

Oh --no -- moving date is June 29th - am assuming I'm still on my time track. Haven't had a phone call from MN yet. Might be a letter in the mail - Didn't get Thurs mail yet, and today's won't be here till this afternoon. Will pick it up tomorrow when I go over to other bldg to wait for Sun Van to go to library.

I can't believe it - this orchid is still in bloom almost 3 months and still looks pretty healthy. It's from Home Depot - and others that haven't lasted as long are from Trader Joe's. This might mean they get their orchids from different places??? I'd love to get a couple "JustAddIce" orchids, but they are a little more expensive, think I'll wait till I get up there.

Oh Echo ... you are so funny! I often feel like the flowers do have the ability to make most of the things that are ugly push into the far corners of my mind for just a little while. To watch their petals open and close with the temperature changes and think about how incredible it is that each flower is different ... it helps me focus on the little things that really are the big things in life! No wonder getting flowers makes me feel like a million bucks!

I'm confused ... I thought you were leaving to move yesterday!?!

Can't wait to see all your pics of your flowers. I still have my last orchid blooming beautifully, don't know how long it will last yet - Have had it since March 5th and of course it would have been blooming before then. However it did have one bud on it and after I watered it, the bud is now a real flower.

Have 4 orchids in dormant mode - lost two others. Don't know how many of these will make it through to grow and bloom again. Hope I didn't do anything wrong. Still learning about repotting and stuff. Don't think these need repotting though - they still seem to have plenty of room with their roots, yet. Unless I don't know what I'm doing. You never know -------

Another day they've grown a bit more. There's a few more smaller leaves that weren't there before. These are some really fun plants. The basket with the 2 kinds of plants (used to be three) have taken off like a rocket. The reason they were so puny when I got them is they were in Mom's bathroom and no one remembered to water them. So they became stunted and one or two of them did not make it. eventually, I think I'll add a couple new plants, but maybe not till "we" get to MN.

Things here are blooming all over the place! Tulips, daffodils and some other bulbs are all bursting forth! I got some carnations to transplant from a friend and shared some Shasta daisies to her! Can't wait to get out there this weekend (if it will stop raining long enough) to get the bark down in the flowerbed I cleaned out last weekend! Also, I have roses that have GOT to get pruned back! Always sooooo much to day .... Echo, hope your babies are coming right along! I have never had any luck with African Violets! My house is just not plant friendly inside!

I had to water orchids again. they seemed to dry out fast and am thinking I did not actually get all the medium wet down and the water just went out and left most of it dry. so, am redoing them all. I need to give them some orchid fertilizer, too. In a few days. Have to wait till the sink isn't cluttered with dirty dishes. chuckle

Paula - I'll bet you did not talk to your seedlings enough - you've been so busy with other things. Just plant some more - sounds like with the weather as serious as it is will give you time to to have the sprout and grow.

African Violets -- with my really good "green thumb" - African Violets are the one thing that seem to "fade away" when I get them. guess they are just too tender.

Have paperwork - will send it back next week. I have target date all planned for June 29 to finish packing POD and have it picked up, then go to airport and fly out --- woohoo. May have to bring it up a month sooner, but will know more after they get my paperwork and check it all out. Apt is available now -- wheel chair accessible - that means no steps. I'm hoping there's enough window/light/sunny area to put my plants. The orchids in hibernation will be okay out of the direct light. But, a VERY GOOD FRIEND is giving me some NEW very special PLANTS when I get there and they will need sun.

Suffering for your babies is part of having neat garden. They will appreciate it. chuckle I would think you could trade out the exercises -- hmmmmm???

The ones I will probably have to leave with my friend are the two that won't make the trip in a dark, hot POD container for 8-10 days. I don't want to torture them like that. I think the orchids will be okay, as they will be dormant. If I water them just before I put load them, they should be okay -- I hope.

I finally got to work for a couple of sunny, warm hours outside in my flowerbeds yesterday. Today I groaned when I sat down, I groaned when I got up and I wondered if I should trade in running for working in my flowerbed! Appears to be a more effective workout ... LOL .... I love my babies! Tulips have their blooms pushing up out of the leaves but are not in bloom so far, some daffodils are pushing out of the ground ... I need to get some pics and post them!

Echo - Hope your orchids come back! It would be a shame if you lost them now!

I think I may have lost two of my orchids - seemed not to be very hardy at all, and I did not get them checked out as soon as I should have. But, we'll see if they will rejuvenate after I finally gave them some TLC and talked turkey and then "nice". chuckle

I agree with you adding rocks to make a "rock garden" - designing that way looks so neat, especially when the flowers start to bloom and if some are creeping over the rocks it really makes your yard look nice. And makes you feel good because you've accomplished something quite beautiful and unique.

I mentioned to some people tonight about not being able to decide if I should try to take some plants with me. The orchids will all be in hibernation and probably will be just fine in a "dark" container for over a week. However, I don't think the philodendron and the other house plant pot will travel that long without light. One of the gals gasped at the very idea I would not take my "kids" with me, etc. She's so funny. Her apt is FULL of plants - a lot of them that trail are grown around each other, etc. She talks to her plants all the time. But, If I don't take the ones I have, I'll probably give them to her. Not that she needs any more. chuckle

Don't get me wrong ... I'm not complaining but I have no idea how I am every going to get my flowerbeds whipped into shape if the rain doesn't stop! Thursday and Friday were WONDERFUL days that would have been perfect for working outside but I wasn't here those days ... LOL ... of course! Today it's raining, it's snowing, it's gonna blow like crazy ... sigh ... So many, many plans for outside and all they can be right now are plans. I DID take the opportunity to let my hubby in on some of my plans for the flowerbeds this summer. Have you ever noticed that guys like to grunt in response when they aren't sure if they are on board with your plans? Giggle, giggle ... He really liked the part where I was talking about getting some big landscaping rocks to add to the one flowerbed! I keep telling him how lucky he is to have me! Bahahahahahaha ... He is a good sport! emoticon

Hi - It's still been nice weather here - staying approx 80 - but will start creeping up more and more. Good for the cactus, but not good for me. I have this sort of leggy philodendrum that was given to me when someone else moved. I think I may pass it on when I move as I know I can borrow starts of plants from up there. And a VERY GOOD FRIEND has some special stuff waiting to give me when I get there.

Oh that's right -- Idaho -- I do miss Idaho. I grew up there and lived there for so many years. And there are a few places where there's a cactus or two. But, can't remember what they were. With a pic I could match it up.

Echo, we actually have a small hillside that is covered in cactus. It is amazingly beautiful when it blooms! It has bright, bright pink flowers and it really kind of sneaks up on us every year so we are always surprised! Truly lovely but doesn't last long. If I can remember I'll get a picture and maybe someone can tell me what kind of cactus it is. And you are always welcome here ... anytime ... but hitchhiking to Idaho might take you a wee bit o' time! emoticon

Where do you live?? Anywhere near Minnesota?? I could hitchhike -- Would love to see your flowers. That's what I miss - Arizona doesn't have the flowers that other places have. The cacti only bloom occasionally - yeh they are pretty, but I miss things like Lilacs and northern type flowers. And everyplace you go in AZ there's miles and miles of Oleanders, to which I am allergic. Another good reason to move. I'm so anxious to get moved so I can revamp my plants.

I visited San Diego once and was greatly amused at the lawns that were rock but painted green! Different areas of the States are so ... different and interesting! I like San Diego ...

I love all of my flowers and am feeling good about being able to care for them better this year with more energy.

I have valerian, poppies, daisies, tulips, daffodils and some other mystery stuff well out of the ground and I can't wait to see more blooms. I need to get on my rose bushes before the season for pruning them is over and Summer sets on. Oh ... and my lilac bush is all budded out! It should be interesting around here in the next several weeks. I just hope the rain/hail/snow is just about over! A little hard to drum up enthusiasm for being out there working in the bad weather ... or I'm just a sissy! And Echo, if you ever make up this way, you are certainly welcome to come and enjoy all the flowers!

When I lived in San Diego, CA - we had a mobile home with a full window in the kitchen - I had one of those big spools that come from electric co that had had cable on it -- painted it white, and it was full of plants that loved the sun and were absolutely abundant and green and some blooming ones, too. Outside I had rose bushes and then colorful stuff like marigolds and asters and I was in hog heaven. Then we moved - had to give all to new homes. I miss that so much.

I love potted plants as well! My husband gets all funny every Spring when I start buying annuals to put in my pots for the front and back porches. Giggle, giggle ... I just roll my eyes and keep right on filling up my pots. I love my flower beds but they just don't add the same "pop" to the outdoor areas!

I have always been too scared to even attempt to take on an orchid. I admire you for doing it! In the house I used to live in, I had potted plants EVERYWHERE inside but this house has terrible lighting for indoor plants so I gave up.

I sure wish the outdoor flower beds were weed themselves but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have to be the "flower bed" fairy around here ... LOL ... it's good exercise anyways! emoticon

Oh how I envy you with your outdoor flowers. I miss them so. I have two pots with philodenron type plants, but don't think l can take them with me -- being in a "big box-pod" for 8-10 days would do them in anyway.

I will probably be able to take the 3 or 4 orchids that I've been able to save/repot, etc., as they will be dormant during that time. They should be okay in the dark for a week or so. 3 of the orchids did not seem to have any kind of hardiness as soon as they quit blooming. Sometimes, when they pot the inexpensive orchids to sell, they are really only meant to last for their blooming life only, unfortunately.

Of course, I'll get some new house plants -- MAYBE I'll have an apt that has a little patio or balcony where I can put a couple of larger pots. Course will have to bring them inside for winter, but there are those little dolly things with wheels to set pots on so they can be moved around.

When it froze so hard here, and longer than usual, a lot of cacti around the apt here were frozen. course some will come back up from roots, but they clipped and cleaned the bad parts and actually dug out some of the really bad ones that had shallow roots so would never come back. Despite the fact that I am sick and tired of cacti, I still hate to see the ones that have really been damaged all over town.

I managed to squeeze some time this set of days off to get 3 of my small flowerbeds cleaned up and get bark put down. I love the beauty of the Spring bulbs pushing up through the ground, the gunk and battling the elements! I also love the look of the fresh bark like frosting that makes the beds look "put together". My flowerbeds bring me great joy ... and this year the work it takes to keep them looking good isn't causing me to sigh and complain! It felt awesome to work outside and get things looking good! emoticon

Oh for a place to have a real little flower garden again. But, I did get to have the two orchids from the flowers for Mom's Memorial. They are lovely and I'm hoping I can keep them blooming as long as possible. Then when they finish blooming, do roots, repot, etc and hope they grow back again.

My poor tulips are about 5 or 6 inches out of the ground and getting snowed on. I'm sure they are trying to figure out what happened!

Well - I did not grow the flowers, but went with Sis and Nieces to order flowers for Mom's Memorial. Liz chose some nice floral arrangements - asked what we thought then did what she wanted anyway. The florist started with the lowest price, about $55, which would have been really nice as they would be great arrangements anyway. Then Sis decided she wanted them all to be $75 arrangements. I know she doesn't have that kind of money and Mom would be really upset, But then, Mom knew Liz can't just spend a "little". Will tell you more about them the next couple of days after I see what they are like.

Save those egg cartons,we put soil in them and planted tomato starts 1 seed in each egg section of the carton. The egg carton after watering a little almost daily the egg carton stays damp and we put them in a window and when the threat of frost is gone we replant them in that soil in our raised garden boxes.Happy green thumb gardening all! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Well - my babies have all quit blooming for this season. Now, I have to take care of checking roots, cutting back, fertilizing and letting them do their hibernation thing till they hopefully will rejuvenate and bloom again. There's a new brand of orchid out now, called "Just add ice" and though they are a little more expensive - I think they live longer, etc. I'll not get any new ones right now -- will wait awhile.

I was sitting looking outside this morning wishing my flowerbeds would magically clean themselves out ... then I figured wishing for a landscaping business to stop in and have pity on me might be a better use of my time. No luck so far but I'm keeping my eyes open! LOL ... oh my ... it's gonna be a very busy Spring here!

One part of my "little" garden -- 3 lovely orchids. I've always wanted to have an orchid. So, I bought myself one for my early birthday present in August. I have 3 that quit blooming and hoping to do the right procedure to get them to grow and bloom again. The other 3 are still blooming -- I talk to them all the time. :)
