Sorry it didn't work out with the trainer, Eda, but glad you're not discouraged. And thanks for being such and encouragement to the rest of us!

We went to the Florence yesterday. Ken and the Art History teacher took their students to study Giotto and and music manuscripts; I was along for the fun. But the AH teacher led us around the city (and gave Florence history lessons on the way--too, too cool--I wonder how many of these students realize how lucky they are!) and he was fast!!! I guess we had a lot of ground to cover. I kept up, but I really got a workout. And it was freezing! There are a few more trips to Florence scheduled, so I guess I'm going to try to keep going. The exercise is terrific and Kirk is a great teacher. (I do realize how lucky I am!)

Well, didn't get to meet with the trainer today cuz she forgot she had a Valentine's Day party at her daughter's class right about the same time we were scheduled to meet! I appreciate the fact that she is a stay at home mom who trains on the side ... I so wish now that I would have had the ability to be there for my kids ... Wishes can be like raindrops, can't they? So many that it's hard to see where they start and stop ...

I'm not discouraged though ... she will email the plan and then follow up with a phone conference. Bummer I'm headed back to work but I am confident it will work out! Life is full of unexpected dips and turns ... I'm just hanging on for the ride!

Hope you are doing WELL and spent some time today loving the women you are growing to be! I think you are all FABULOUS! Woohoo!

Thank you, Nancy. I am the only sibling here close and that makes it a little difficult but I trust that I'm right where I'm supposed to be and so is Mom. I am learning to be thankful for the time we have together because Life can be uncertain. I was thinking at Christmas how sad I was that it might be my mom's last Christmas with us ... and I looked around at my husband and children and realized it could be the last Christmas for any of us. It gave me a new outlook!

I am well pleased that I have stuck with my exercise and haven't let my eating go completely but I'm more excited that I am meeting with a trainer tomorrow (the boot camp instructor so you know she's serious) to get started on my correct fueling for all the running I'll be doing with the 12 week 1/2 marathon training program. I am hopefully that the tape measure will continue to show me improvement! I've just about given up on the stupid scale! LOL ... Nope, not quitting, not going back ... I'm moving forward ... one step at a time ...

Eda, I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. This all must be very difficult for you, but it is good that you are close. I'm very impressed with you that you didn't let the situation derail you. I can't tell you how many times I've used a difficult situation like that as excuse to let my eating and exercising go.

Even when I'm home, I'm still 500 miles away from my mom and she is getting older and having more health problems and it is so hard to be so far away. She is also living with my aunt, who is having lots of health problems, including cancer. She (my aunt) never had kids so my brother and I are very close to her. I feel bad sometimes because all of the care falls on my brother and his wife. My sister in law, however, is wonderful and does everything that needs to be done. When I go for a visit, I know my brother and sister-in-law feel like they have a little vacation from the worry. At least I can do that much.

Finally having a warm sunny day here; after lunch Ken and I are going shopping, which will be my workout for the day!

Skype has been a lifesaver (for me) with being able to talk with my son who is still deployed somewhere in the big sandbox (he can't tell us where)! He has been gone for over 8 months already and I still miss him terribly! We try to Skype once a week so that helps!

Yes, Stacey, unfortunately I kind of fell off of Spark People when my mom when downhill so fast! She has gone from Stage 2 kidney failure to Stage 5 from July of 2011 til Jan 2012. We are going back to the renal clinic this week to have more blood work done to see where she is at right now and to get back the results of the tests they did for cancer the last time we were in. It has been a life changing event for all of my family and I am very, very thankful that even though I didn't have the time to be on Spark People very much, I didn't fall off the wagon. My mom is stronger now and getting around on her own more but still requires more time than I used to commit to her ... I continue to remember that I am very blessed to be here so close to help her. Her battle isn't over yet .... but I am learning to take one day at a time!

Hi Stacey! It's good to hear from you. Yes, being with the grandkids was amazing. They are both at super fun ages. Archie is three and learning to talk, which is adorable and hilarious. It was so much fun to see the amazing jumps in vocabulary in just those six weeks. Some things I don't think we appreciate enough when they are our own kids. With grandkids, you just get to sit back and watch. And little Wren is just over 1 yr. She is the best-natured little thing, always ready to cuddle and smiling all the time. I just love being a grandma. We really miss those kids now, but we did have a wonderful time with them, and now when we Skype, they recognize us. I posted some pictures from Italy, but will put some on of the kids.

Welcome back Nancy. I have to say that I am a bit jealous. Oh not because of Italy although that sounds so amazing but because you spent 6 weeks with your grandkids.

We are looking forward to seeing ours again in a month. It's been a year since we've seen them. Infact, there is a new grandson that is 6 months old that we've never even seen. We only get 5 days with them though. It is going to go by way to quickly.

We had record low temps in Alaska during December and January which made it very difficult for getting outside and exercising. Infact, when it was -55 outside the only thing we did was try to keep warm. This week it warmed up however and has been in the 30's so we been outside enjoying the sun shinning and going for a couple of really nice runs. Today it is 40 and I am afraid a run may be difficult. We have so much snow this year and hard snow pack that now has a layer or ice glazed on the top from the warmth. It's pretty slippery when you step outside the door, but I am going to get out and do something because I know the extreme cold is far from over. We don't usually see any sign of spring until April so I don't want to miss out on a day.

Eda: Glad to see you are doing well. I'm sad that we haven't been as connected lately. Keep in touch.

It's early in the morning here. Just looked at the weather and saw that the temp was supposed to get to 39 today. Great walking weather in Arezzo!

Eda, I searched for you on Facebook, but got no results. In fact, there was no "Eda" listed at all when I searched. Sometimes is fb is like that. Anyway, here is the url for my fb page:

I do have a Facebook account ... It is usually a repeat of what is on Spark People but has lots more pictures as well! You can find me by searching Eda Beams or Eda Lawson. My profile picture is my husband and I. I would LOVE to see more of your pictures and follow your adventure! I'm so envious that you are getting to relax ... I want to do that!

Anyone on here is free to friend me on Facebook as well if you would like. Sometimes I have time to post a short random thing on Facebook when I feel like I have the time to get logged in here and do stuff. Probably just an excuse now that I think of it!

I had a great eating day, a great productive day ... now back to work Wed - Sunday this week ... I'm sleepy already! Yawn ... Night!

Hi Eda! I posted a few pictures here, but I have a lot more on Facebook. If you have a fb account, we could be friends there and you could see many more pics. I'm also writing "Notes" about living in Italy, if you are interested.

Hope you all have a great day! (It is 8:30 am here, but 12:30 am back in CST in US.)

Sounds like everyone is catching a breather after the holidays! Welcome back, Nancy! You've been missed. Actually we have all been a tad scattered over the past month or so ... can't believe Feb already snuck up on us! Wow ... Italy sounds fabulous ... can't wait to see some pics if you post some!

How's everybody else doing?

Hi Again!

I left for a while, but not for good. Life got really, really crazy and I had no time for a while. I was getting ready to leave for Italy, getting ready for the holidays (for which we kind of go crazy at our house) and my daughter-in-law and my two adorable grandchildren came and stayed with us for six weeks. I had to make some hard choices as to what I could do, and I just had to spend less time on the computer while it was all going on.

Life has been amazing. Had a wonderful time with family; the grandkids were wonderful, and it was good spending time with my daughter-in-law. My son got to come for a few days right at Christmas, which was also wonderful. We had some terrific family time. We never know when we will see them, so each visit is a gift.

We were supposed to be in Italy at the beginning of January, but had some trouble with the visas and didn't end up leaving until Jan. 20, only three days before Ken's classes started. But we're here!! We love Italy and are having a wonderful time.

We live in an apartment in the old part of Arezzo, which is in Tuscany, a little south and east of Florence. And when I say old, I mean really old. We went for a walk just a little ways from our place a few days ago and saw a couple of Roman columns. This is so cool.

And then there is the food. Pizza and pasta. And risotto. And gelato. Yikes. It is so good!!! Fortunately for me, we live at the top of a hill and on the third floor with no elevator. And no car. I'm getting lots of exercise. I'm also trying to get up every morning and do a bit of yoga. I haven't gained any weight (I don't think--at least according to how my clothes are fitting) but I don't think I've lost any, either. I'm going to have to start paying a little more attention to the food, or at least the amounts of food, I'm eating, if I want to continue to lose.

One of the really nice things about being here in Italy is that all of a sudden, there is nothing much that we have to do! Ken teaches on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3 to 6. Aside from that, we are free. After the incredible stress of the last few months, we are resting and relaxing and having a great time just being in the apartment doing nothing.

So I'm back.

I'm going to go post some pictures.

Ciao!

Well, I guess I needed that extra sleep because it turned out I was coming down with something and I haven't felt well for the last few days. I'm a bit better today although not totally feeling 100% yet. The good news is that I got lots of sleep the last few days.

Just got my son off on the bus and I was debating going back to bed for a few minutes rest before my DH needs to get up. I was feeling quilting about sleeping when I know there are things I could get done and then I read what the two of you said and well.....I'm going to lay down for 30 minutes.

May you both have a day full of blessings.

Ahhh ... finding ways to be kind to ourselves is so important. And exercise can be good but when you are already fatigued it can be a total bummer. I have been working very, very hard to have rest days in my workout schedule and to HONOR them in my schedule. That is very hard for me to do! Let me know how it goes with getting back on track for yourself! Huge wishes for much success!

a wee check-in.
winding down my bf's busy January. He has a business helping students prepare for their diploma (final, gov't) exams so Jan and June are the months. We help hundreds of students and it is always stressful getting it all together!
No time to exercise or even weigh in, when we are doing this, so tomorrow I start up again.
Re-reading what I wrote in the last sentence, I'm thinking I should probably be on the elliptical but would rather spend my few minutes on the computer. That's me being kind to myself. I'll push tomorrow!

Temperature ... My understanding is that hot yoga is at, like, 104 degrees and warm yoga is at 84-ish degrees. I tried the warm yoga ... figured out I'm just not a yoga fan at any temperature! I'm more of an intensity type work out person ... I don't enjoy the "flowing" moves of yoga. I get bored and forget what I'm supposed to be concentrating on! Sad but true ... LOL ...

I'm thinking you need to get a yoga DVD, Stacey and do some "hot" yoga in front of the fireplace! I'm told that it is a good thing but haven't convinced myself of that yet. Ok, actually I felt really silly at the warm yoga class I went to ... I'm much rather do the brutal push of a boot camp class than the yoga thing. I'm way too competitive for my own good ... I still digging the power pilates though! Love them ... Hate it when I have to miss class!

I'm so glad to hear that your son came and gave you a chance to work out. I totally understand what you are saying. It is not awful at all.

I've been struggling with workouts because of the extreme cold and large amounts of snow we have gotten. My husband and I try to get out and run when we can but 40 below just leaves me snuggling by the fireplace.

Ahhhhhhhh ... It might be horrible for me to say but it was such a relief to have my son come over and stay with my mom while my husband and I went to Boot Camp this morning! I have so missed working out! It's so easy to say "Nothing will keep me from working out" and then change comes and it takes a little while to get a new schedule adopted, adapted and implemented. I can do this ... I know I can ...

Uhhh ... Stacey ... I hate to sound whimpy-er but I don't run outside if it's below freezing! I can't imagine running in 30-40 degrees below zero! Nu-uh, no way! I don't think that is whimpy AT ALL! Wow ... I would, however, love to see the midnight sun!

How about committing to try one recipe per month from Spark Recipes?
And how about committing to do something just for ourselves that is a treat just for us that we usually can't or won't do? For some of us, that might be as easy as giving ourselves an hour to read with guilt or to take a bubble bath!

My personal challenges have been working on our new eating plan since my husbands heart attack and we have been running almost every day. Admittingly my husband runs twice as far as me in the same time as me, but hey I'm working on it. We would really like to run in the midnight sun race this year but it may not work with our schedules because we may have to be in Las Vegas at that time for business. If we can't run that race then we want to run some other races. He has always loved running (I've always hated running emoticon ). We have never done a race before. Sometimes when it is 30 or 40 below I don't go with him when he runs. I'm a wimp that way.

I would love to think of some smaller team challenges though, but my mind has been blank.

Christmas is a memory now and New Year's is zooming up on us! I've already decided the first three months of the year are going to be "purging" months at my house! If we don't use it or need it, it's GOT TO GO! I'm so tired of taking something from one place to another in the house or opening a closet and thinking "I haven't unpacked that box in the 5 years we've lived here"!!! It is so maddening ... It's all got to go!

And these last pesky 25 lbs ... they have GOT TO GO too! I need to buckle down and control my eating, start resting more and am planning to start a training program in Feb with a Spark buddy to run a 1/2 marathon on May 5th ... 25 less pounds would be pretty cool!

How about you? What's 2012 looking like in your plans?

Oh my goodness, Stacey ... your family has had quite the year for 2011! First the gluten issues, now the heart attack - and yes, you are so blessed to have gotten him there before it did some real damage - but what an incredible blessing to get a second chance. I believe 2012 is going to be a great year for you guys!

I hope everyone else is moving right along towards getting your holiday preparations under control. The stress of this time of the year can just be overwhelming if we don't balance it with some moments of sanity. It doesn't take a lot of effort to have those few moments of sanity -- just relax and breathe deeply. I use this technique whenever I can remember it at work when someone on the phone has been extremely rude or when one of my co-workers has been unpleasant. It works .. when I can remember to use it!

Let me know if there's anything I can help out with from here! I'm cheering you all on for a strong finish to 2011! We can do this ... we are ABLE!

Oh yes, you are so right Eda that we must take care of ourselves in this time of taking care of others.
It has been a crazy and yet blessed week for us. My DH had not been feeling well lately and had noticed being very tired. On Thursday he was feeling very badly and then had some pains in his upper left collar bone. I should have called an ambulance, but instead I drove him the 100 miles to town to get it all checked out. Turns out that he had a heart attack.

Praise God that we made it there without causing him further complications. Praise God that we actually went because he is stubburn at times and didn't know if he wanted to spend the money to go and have them say there was nothing wrong.

He's only 49 years old and in relatively good shape. He doesn't smoke or drink. He is about 10 pounds over weight according to his BMI. He eats 2 yogurt and a banana for breakfast every morning, then salmon or herring usually at lunch with some sort of small side depending on what he had. maybe some gluten free crackers, maybe some free veggies. Sometimes he just has a salad, with probable too much salad dressing. For dinner our usual dinner is moose steak, a veggie (no sauce), and a baked potato (with butter and sour cream). He does eat about a bag of chips every two weeks and then he loves his ice cream. Oh and he has a glass of skim milk with each meal.
As you can see there is some room for improvement now that he has had the heart attack, but with what he was eating, he had convinced himself that those little bits did hurt and that he was in good shape because he lifts logs about 5 hours every day as he builds the log house.

Well, those little bits do matter and so do genes. We also learned that although he was doing a lot of physical activity that it is still critical to do 20 to 30 minutes of nonstop cardio every day. Perhaps it isn't every day for everyone but for him going forward it is every day.

I am excited about our life moving forward. I'm grateful that there is a WE going forward. My husband is committed to make some life changes and we are looking forward to doing those things together. Up until now I've been on the journey alone and it is more difficult that way.

It would have been nice to not go through what we have this past several days and but I'm blessed beyond words.

In a season when it's easy to loose focus on the simple things, try to remember that taking care of ourselves is one of the most important things we can do. In taking care of ourselves, we are better able to help others in their times of need ... and we will be around longer with fewer health issues for our children and our grandchild (in most cases). Good nutrition, exercise and regularly managing our stress levels keeps us in balance. Balance is a good thing ... any time you find yourself frazzled and at the end of your rope, sit down and breath in through your nose, out through your mouth until you calm down. It's just a few more weeks and this holiday season will be far behind us ... Don't sacrifice all of your hard, hard work right now because of the pressures that either you place on yourself or others try to place on you!

Hello there! Just checking in to see if anyone is having any problems ... anything I can do! Like everybody else, I have too much to get done and really never enough time but somehow it all gets crammed in! Christmas will come no matter what so why stress about it? Now if I could just make time to make all my goodies! All the time I used to have is taken up now with exercising! What a great trade!

Try to keep in mind as you rush through this holiday season that this too shall pass and we'll all still be left with the after effects! Everything is good in moderation ... most stuff not so good when we indulge in it too often, too much for too long!

Hold steady and refuse to give up ground that you've already staked your claim to! You are WORTH IT!

Stacey: I know you certainly face struggles and circumstances I can't even imagine! I, too, am delighted to have such wonderful Spark People buddies to be such wonderful support for me when I'm at the "ok, now what?" stage - which seems to be often! I am plagued with slow weight loss too and find myself having to give myself the "You can do it" pep talk often!

Lynette: Do tell about your cruise! I see you made a blog on it and am on my way over to read it right now!

Keep up the great work!

Hello happy people!
I'm back in the land of snow and my weight is way up--- as I knew it would be with unlimited, delicious food, coupled with no routines, and very little exercise. I could have done better but now, I am NOT on holidays and I re-commit to eating well, exercising at least 10 minutes daily and sparking diligently!
I enjoyed reading your postings when I caught up with the team today.
Hope you all have a great Sunday,
L

Eda: I'm glad you were able to get some things sorted out on your 8 mile walk. A local spark buddy would be an amazing, or any kind of work out buddy but being out in the middle of the woods makes that nearly impossible. I say nearly, as in not completely because I suppose I could drive into town every day if I could find someone there that was motivated enough to make it worth my drive but so far I haven't found anyone worth the time and gas to go. I could spend the same hour of driving time, working out.

I'm grateful however for all my spark buddies online that keep me motivated.

I did my beginning of the month measurements and was pleased to see that although I only lost 3 pounds this month, I'm definitely shredding inches. I'm also seeing my heart rate go down so I count November as victorious.

Whew ... what a day today! Kettle bell class this morning was a HUGE challenge! I'm fairly sure the instructor was trying to help us sweat out all the bad stuff we ate over the holiday! It was tough! Then this afternoon I "treated" myself to a long walk - 8 miles in 2 hours and 5 mins. I walk when I need to mentally sort through things ... I had a lot of sortin' to do! I don't know that I have every thing worked out in my brain yet but I'm much closer than I was when I left the house! As you can imagine, I burned mega calories today which is a blessing since I probably won't be able to work out tomorrow!

I also signed up for all my classes I want to go to in December and feel strong ... energized just looking at my list! Having a local Spark Buddy to work out with is a huge motivator! I encourage everybody to find somebody to make their workouts more fun! It works .. HONEST! Have a great week ... Let's kick November out with a bang and get started on the Christmas season!

Thanksgiving is just leftovers in the fridge now and I feel the Christmas energy starting to creep up on me. It hasn't taken full effect yet (mostly cuz I'm too busy right now) but it will soon! Who's got a great plan on how to sanely deal with all the demands of Christmas? I could use some words of wisdom here!

Woohoo ... It's the weekend and the Christmas Season kick off all at the same time! Yesterday I got this tiny rush of excitement when I realized I can put my tree now! LOL ... ok, the lots need to open first but hey, I love my tree every year! I still do a real tree because of the smell!

I am seeing lots of people on SP are going to hit it hard this month in terms of exercise and working out. My eating is staying level and I'm sticking with my very busy workout schedule because it does help with the stress - so I'm not looking to change much. Frankly I'm just hoping to tread water and deal with the added stress of my mom's many, many doctor appts as we continue to move through this journey of Renal failure. At times like this I really wish some of my family lived closer.

What's your plan for the last month of the year? Are you already thinking about goals for next year? Anyone have any great motivators or encouragement to share with the rest of us???

Howdy Folks! Looks like everybody else has been as busy as I have for the past few days! The holidays are always soooooo busy! I'm done with my work week but am making our family Thanksgiving feast tomorrow so I'm not done yet!

I was happy with my eating yesterday at work and am delighted tomorrow I get to control what there is to eat! I'm always happy with my exercise for the week! I did manage to squeeze in my long run today so that made my day! Maybe tomorrow morning we will do a quick brick before I get started cooking!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Wow Eda, you are always full of new and exciting workouts.

Like you, I don't believe portion control is going to be an issue because I really can't eat as much as I use to and I'm much better at stopping at full. Rearranging my workout schedule is going to be my challenge. I'm already fighting the cold and the fact that mostly I have to workout inside so with the house being more full for the holiday's that is going to be a challenge but I will find a way.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.
