Howdy y'all. I have a few minutes to myself and wanted to get back on track a tad. Things in my life have been all over the place and continue to be going faster and faster. Having a breather and maybe following it up with a nap sounds like a plan to me!

I have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving season! I keep thinking of all the little things that make such a difference! I'm not worried much about portion control for the Thanksgiving meal because I just can't eat a ton anymore! Even when I want to, I can't!

I re-arranged my workout schedule this week to make it work better for me ... tried kick boxing class this morning ... Uhhh ... wow! That was an intense class! I'll be going back for more! I'm wanting to add some mileage onto my long run this week too ... I'll keep you posted on how that goes!

I think I'll be back on prior to Thanksgiving Day but if not, Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Make sure you hug everyone you love tight and make sure they know how much you love them. Lots of families will have an empty space in their hearts and at their tables this year ... we have much to be thankful for.

The cupboards and refrigerator and fully restocked, except I forgot three things so now I have to wait about 2 1/2 weeks until I return. Unfortunately, one of the items I forgot was yeast for the gluten free bread I am going to make for thanksgiving. Luckily, a friend has extra.

It was 36 below yesterday and again today so we skipped the run for the day.

I am very happy with my life here. We came here for the adventure and we are making sure to live it. Your right, 39 degrees would be a heat wave, but then it would make for some very dangerous running. It seams we get a warm up usually at some time around Thanksgiving and then when we try to go for a walk, we can't even get down the road it is so slippery. School never gets closed here because of snow (there would never be school) but they have closed it because it got too warm outside.

Today we are headed to town to restock on groceries. Good thing because last night three people had to share one carrot. There was plenty of other things but carrots are a family favorite. My son declared that a recession is here. My DH said he wanted to cut back on his portion sizes anyway. He sure made me smile although I'm pretty sure he was serious. I explained that cutting back on carrots wasn't really going to help him.

Hip hip hurray for Stacey! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon and kicked 2 pounds to the curb as well! Yay you!

I'd love to say I even have a clue what we are doing for Thanksgiving but hey, I only have so many hours in my day! Plus I drive into a large town every day I work so no big deal here ... no dog sleds either emoticon . I'm sure it probably doesn't seem like it but your life sounds so exciting from the high desert of Idaho ... wow ... I can't imagine running in a foot of snow in 5 degrees. Thanks for making me look like a cry baby yesterday when I was whining about it being 39 degrees out! That would have been a mini heat wave for you!

I'm totally impressed with your re-commitment to your health, Stacey! Keep up the great work!

Glad to see you are making progress. Me too!!!

My list is pretty well complete for Thanksgiving and tomorrow I make the big trip to town for supplies. It was even more challanging this year to balance low calorie, low fat, healthy options for me as well as gluten free options for my DH. I think I'm pretty happy with my list though. I'm amazed at what the price tag all adds up to though. YIKES

Exercise has been going great. My husband has been running every other day (for three different runs now). In spite the major accumulation of snow we have, I decided to go with him for the last one. I thought he was crazy running in the snow and when we started down the driveway, my thoughts were confirmed but then we got to the road (it's a private dirt road but our neighbors live another couple miles in from us and they always pack the snow down. Not plow but pack for the dog sleds). Anyway, we got to the road and I found it wasn't so bad on the snow pack. I only ran a mile but I figured the fact that it was about 5 degrees out and more than a foot of snow, that was pretty good.

I've stayed on track food wise really well for the past couple weeks and I feel like it is paying off; but today is more difficult because the cupboards are bare. Yeah for a new stock of food tomorrow.

Hello Ladies ... another day in the books! How did your day go? Did you get in your exercise, water and stick to your calories?

The days til Thanksgiving are ticking away ... Lucky for me I have a couple of extra days since I work Thanksgiving (every year) so I'll have the holiday at our house on the 26th! I'm thinking I ought to get crackin' on my menu for this year! Yikes!

Hello Ladies ... I've been a little MIA and I probably will continue to be off and on but I'm doing the best I can right now! Life is at least interesting if nothing else.

It's been quite the inspiration to observe myself moving through this time of extremely high stress being able to stay somewhat in control of my calories (I'm not stuffing myself with high fat food or lots of sugar to cope) and continuing to exercise albeit a wee bit too much. In exercising I find a release, a feeling of being in control of SOMETHING when everything is out of control right now! It makes me want to just keep exercising!

I hope all of you are doing well and are ready for the stress of the holiday season ... We can do this! Hugs, Eda

Oh Stacey ... that brings tears to my eyes! No matter how long the road is ahead, it can be ok. My husband is a brittle diabetic which means his blood sugar can tank or spike really rapidly. He abused his body for years before getting on the straight and narrow in so many ways. I continue to watch him grow and change in our journey from there to here and I am amazed! We are so blessed to be able to take control of our health and GO, GO, GO!

Indeed we are blessed!

Just thought I would give you an update on my DH and his gluten free diet. He continues to do very well. It is so nice not to have to push him to do it. In the past I really had to convenience him each time to skip the gluten but he has been so willing and doing it on his own this time. He still has a long way to get his health back and recover but I see improvement all the time. This morning he got up and went for a run first thing. He use to run all the time but since his health has went down hill, he just hasn't had the energy. I should have gotten dressed and went with him but I couldn't imagine running when it was 5 below.

L: How exciting ... I didn't realize you live in Canada! I know, it's probably old hat to you but it sounds exciting and beautiful to me! I live in the "high desert" of Idaho and there is beauty here but it's a very different beauty. Lots of agriculture where I live!

I love the 10 mins a day approach. Everything I've done in my exercise since I started SparkPeople has started out with a short amount of time that I dedicated to it. The 10 mins will become 20, the 20 will become 30 and so on and so forth ... You can do it!

Stacey: I'm going to do the same things and loosely base my Thanksgiving menu on her's. That way I have somewhere to start! Congrats on your 2 pound loss this week! Woot woot ... let's hear it for strength training! emoticon

I've had a wonderful and successful week. The sun has been shinning several days but that usually also means colder temperatures. It's suppose to drop to 20 below tonight but really it is kind of late in arriving so I can't complain. I've had lots of opportunities to get outside and be active which is a big help mentally with winter upon us. I lost 2 pounds this last week and I'm feeling the difference in my clothes already.

Eda: I'm glad to hear that you are seeing the results of the strength training. It has always been a huge help for me in seeing the results that I desire and I love the way that I feel stronger.

Lynette: I think committing to 10 minutes a day can be a great way to stay on track. It doesn't make it feel like the impossible that way. It's easier to say: I can do 10 minutes and I think you'll find 15 minutes before you know it and so on and so on.

I'm geared up and ready for the holidays. Since I am mostly at home during the holiday's I'm not as tempted by all the pot luck goodies other than a few church gathers but fruit is such a treat around here that I can usually count on someone to bring a good plate of fruit and someone to bring veggies. I've adapted Chef Meg's 500 calorie thanksgiving and it really has helped. I don't do her exact meal but I used it as a starter and made some changes but calculated all the calories ahead of time so that I knew what I was doing with each food I put in my mouth.

Hi there
I'm in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and our snow is now almost gone. I have lived in a few different places in the province and Calgary definitely has the most changeable weather.
I have been feeling less than perky so I have not been getting in a whole lot of exercise But I committed to a minimum of 10 minutes each day due to the blog of another Sparkperson and that is keeping me a bittttt active.
Heading on a holiday so I know it will be a huge challenge not to over-indulge on eating everything my heart desires.
Wish me luck!

Hello Ladies! Stacey, I'm pretty sure the skiff of snow we got yesterday morning wouldn't even be enough for you to consider snow emoticon but I was delighted to see the ground barely covered over and watch the flakes float to the ground. There is something about watching it snow that I love! Lynettemom - where do you live? Do you guys get lots of snow?

As for me, I'm doing ok on my food intake (a little on the low calorie side but I think it will be ok), am very happy with my exercising (I can't believe how much difference strength training is making in my body already) and not doing so good on rest. Two out of three ain't bad.

I sincerely hope everyone coming up with plan on how to handle the holiday meal as well as how to fend off the inevitable plates of candy and goodies that seem to show up everywhere. LOL ... I make a habit of reminding myself that when those things pass through my lips, they are gonna hang out on my hips for a long, long, LONG time! It helps most of the time!

Have a fabulous day ... Eda

enjoyed reading your update. It sounds like you have a very interesting life. We have snow in the forecast for tonight/tomorrow and I am not lookng fwd to it! Temperature will be -5 (Celcius here), which is well above 0 in Fahrenheit, so it is nowhere near as cold as what you are experiencing.

Just dropping by to see how everyone is doing

It's been a cold a beautiful week here. The skies have been clear and the sun shinning but the temperature this morning was negative 16, so I haven't been getting outside much to exercise other than removing snow from the house so that my DH can continue to work on it. He amazes me that he can work out there 4 to 5 hours a day. I'm pretty much done with the cold after an hour. I'm thankful for his determination though because some day it will mean moving into the larger house. That some day will be at least 2 1/2 years at this rate but imagine how much longer it would be if he didn't work in the cold.

We both look forward to being able to get two treadmills when we get the house done and running on them together in the winter when it is too cold to be exercising outside. Until then, I do the best I can to exercise in our tiny cabin. I've had a very good week so far.

How about the rest of you. How has exercise and eating been going this week?
What about rest? Are you getting enough?

Yes ... it hard to drag a horse to water, isn't it? Then you get it there, the best you can do is hold it's head under or let it go until it's ready to drink of it's own free will ... I'm not saying that your husband is a horse, I'm just saying that you are completely right! Sometimes you just have to lean on your faith and trust that the Lord has it all under control .. and take into account that His time is not our time!

I'm delighted your husband is already feeling better! That makes my heart happy! There is NOTHING worse than when someone we love isn't feeling well! emoticon

Keep us updated so we can continue to celebrate with you!

Feeling so blessed today and praising God for answered prayers

You may recall the battle that I struggled with in regards to my husbands health and gluten allergy which what I believe he has is actually celiac and not an allergy. There is a difference but it's easier to say to people gluten allergy because they seam to know more what your talking about. Quick update if you don't recall: He was having some major health issues. I saw him suffering every day and of course prayed about what to do. That is when God told me it was gluten. I continued to pray because I didn't know what to do with the knowledge; I knew my husband would not listen. I secretly put him on a gluten free diet and saw him getting better. I finally told him about it and at first he resisted. Finally he agreed to try it but in the mean time went ahead and had the surgery the doctors said he would need to get better. He got better but was sure it was surgery rather than the diet and eventually because frustrated with the limitations and told me he had enough he was going to eat what he wanted. I continued to pray because I was at a loss of what I was suppose to do. Finally, I said "God, this is something that I can not control. I have no power over this. I leave this in your hands". I realized that in ways I was trying to control the situation by still limiting what he was eating when he was unaware of it. I watched him continue to get worse again. I couldn't help but wonder if it was ever God's plan for him to get better. It was difficult to let go but I did. Well, Praise God because my husband has declared that he would like to eat gluten free again. I asked him why the change but didn't get an answer from him. I didn't push the issue. I just give God the glory for finally opening his eyes.
It has only been three days but already I'm seeing improvement. I'm looking forward to a healthy husband again.

Thank you Stacey! I can't wait to try them both! I will try the butternut squash as a soup ... I know I like it but I've never made it!

Happy to report my cold weather running stuff is AWESOME! Loved it!

I love zucchini too but didn't get much of it this year with the prices so high here.

As for acorn squash and buttternut squash, there is so much you can do.

The acorn squash can just be cooked in the microwave is your really busy. A lot of people add butter and brown sugar when it's done but skip all those extra calories because it has lots of sweet flavor all by itself.

www.ehow.com/how_5279994_cook-acorn-
sq
uash-microwave.html

You can also cut it in half before you cook it and put it in the oven in a baking dish, flesh side up, with a little water. You'll have to remove the seeds after you cut it in half. For fun extra flavor you can add some chopped up apples to the center while it's cooking. I also add some caribou sausage mixed in with the apples but the sausage in the store has so much fat I'm not sure if that's the best idea.

As for butternut squash; you can cook it the same as the acorn, but it's a more firm squash so it's great for making fries with. This is a great way to enjoy it

I like to use this method (the link I included) and sprinkle it with paprika. It takes a little time to peal the squash but this is so good.

Both squashes can be used for soup but I prefer the butternut squash. I tend to buy the acorn more though simply because I can get an acorn squash normally for about $2 whereas a butternut squash cost me about $6 each. This week there weren't either in the store which surprised me because this is usually the best time of the year to get them. I'll be going back on November 15th. Hopefully they will have some in by then.

I think zucchini is great. I don't have a garden so I haven't had as much of it since my mom died. She was one of those gardeners who left giants on people's doorsteps! Her chocolate zucchini cake was delish. Since I'm limiting my sweets, I usually have zuke as a vegetable.

Hey Stacey, what do you do with your acorn squash? I've got some but haven't made it before! I also picked up a butternut squash but haven't made that before either. I want to start gravitating towards winter veggies but I feel like I'm a little (lot) under-educated on them

Hope your trip goes well!

Today is a glorious day. I got up early and did a great kettlebell work out.

Now the sun is shinning (we don't get that very much this time of year) and I have some acorn squash cooking in the oven. After I enjoy that, I'll be making some banana bread for tonights bible study. I figure I wont indulge on that as much as I did the chocolate chip cookies. They were just to easy to keep grabbing another and another. Tomorrow we head south about 300 miles to the city of Anchorage for a few days. I'm excited to use the fitness room.

Good for you, Stacey ... I love that you are going to spend time re-dedicating yourself to what it will take to move you forward. I would like to add that you should not despair if the scale isn't moving ... Take your measurements and see where you are that way. If I was waiting on the scale to move, it would be totally depressing. I've lost 1 pound (yes, just one) in 4 months now and it has been humbling, a tad depressing and sometime de-motivating. I remind myself frequently that writing down what I am eating and how much I am exercising keeps me honest about how I'm HONESTLY doing!

While you are exercising, I hope you spend some time reminding yourself that you CAN do this and that you ARE a success already. I believe in you ... emoticon emoticon

Eda, those are some very good question. This morning I've really been pondering the whole, what I'm doing isn't working thing. After six months on sparks I was down 23 pounds. I looked great and felt great. Slowly I've gained back 15 of those pounds and it feels like all the inches. I keep playing it over and over in my head trying to figure out what I'm doing different. I feel like I'm doing the same thing I was when I lost the 23 but obviously I'm not. For the last several weeks I've felt like I've had great weeks but when I step on the scales....the exact same.

I really have to set a different plan in motion

This week we head to the city for business for 3 days. My husband will be in meetings, I'll spend some time in the fitness room (always a nice change up to the routine) but then I want to spend some time writing down a plan.

If what you are doing now isn't working, what would make it better? How much are you willing to give up or attain to to reach your goals? What stands in your way to better health, a fitter body or a better sense of self confidence? What are your goals for this week ... the holidays ... next year?

These are all questions I am pondering right now as I'm on the edge of jumping into something new and a little confusing for me. Running I get ... strength training I don't ... but I know I can educate myself and find people who are knowledgeable in this area who can help me. I know I can give myself time to become the much fitter, better runner Eda who is looking forward to running 13 miles in Spring 2012. I can do this ... What are you headed for?

You and me both, Stacey ... That would have been a 24 mile run home and 24 mile run back! I'm would have stil been at it! emoticon

Don't beat yourself up about the cookies ... Accept that it happened and put a plan in place for "next time". I know your husband doesn't want to deliberately get you off track but sometimes people who don't have food issues don't comprehend that there are "trigger" foods that cause those of us who DO to go overboard! My advice in that situation would be to make something that doesn't appeal to you that is still good.

I'm glad your debit card was in the car and not at home. That would have been a lot of exercise running home.

Thanks for the review on the cook book. It always helps to hear what others think.

I had a great week until yesterday. We were having a bible study group at our house and my DH thought it would be a great idea if I made some chocolate chip cookies for the group. I set our determined that I wasn't eating any. After 5 cookies I had to demand myself to stop. I do really well when the temptations aren't there but I really have to work on the self control issue.

Hi Stacey ... The cookbook actually has tons of information and stories and not really as many recipes as you would think. For me, it has already been incredible because I discovered a truth about myself in there that I didn't realized I didn't know. The dietician Becky Hand does a class on nutrition and the first thing she does is hand out a small bag of trail mix. She asks the people in the class to take ONE piece of the trail mix and put it in their mouth, chewing it completely before swallowing it. Her point is that lots of people chew their food ONLY TO THE SIZE TO GET IT DOWN THEIR ESPHOGUS, not to the point where they get to the taste and texture of the food! That was a HUGE lightbulb, a-ah moment for me! I'm ashamed to admit I am TOTALLY GUILTY of that! So for the past two days I've been forcing myself to take small bites of everything I put in my mouth and think about the taste and texture. Wow ... I've been missing alot. All of a sudden, I'm starting to see that food is about more than just shovel it in and get on with life. My point here ... The cookbook is way more than just recipes and I'm only on page 77!

Thought I'd share a funny with you ladies! I got my exercise in early this morning and had a great run! A couple of hours after that, I was at the checkout stand with all my groceries rung up when I realized (quite to my horrified, embarrasssing dread) that I had left my debit card out in the car - which I parked way on the other side of the parking lot for a little "extra exercise" ... LOL ... I got more than I bargained for when I ran all the out there and all the way back to hurry for the obviously not impressed clerk! So goes to show ... You just never know where you are going to find "exercise opportunities" ... I don't think I'll be making a habit of it though ... She looked a tad snarly! emoticon

Congrats on getting the sparks cook book. Let us know what you think. I love new recipes but I usually get most of them online.

I got a new kettlebell which I've been wanting to do for a long time now, but haven't wanted to spend the money on myself. I'm kind of surprised how expensive they are but I'm so glad I did it. Snow will be here any day now. In fact we are about 2 weeks past when we normally get our first snowfall and when it hits here in Alaska it usually stays. Not like other places were it snows and melts and then snows again. We wont likely see the ground again until May some time and lots of days it will be to cold to get out and run. I do try to walk unless it gets colder than 20 below but running is to hard on the lungs and the road gets very slippery. Anyway, I really needed to get something new and exciting to keep me on track with exercising this winter. There wont be wood to chop and things like that to keep me busy so with a tiny cabin I have to be creative. So far it's just what I was looking for: it's fun, it's exciting, it burns lots of calories, and it doesn't take up much room in the house.

I've had a great week all around both exercise and eating.
Hope you are all having a great October as well

One of my awesome Spark Buddies posted this on my blog from yesterday ... I love it and wanted to share it with you ladies.

"We are only human, we are not perfect. . . It's one day at a time, one moment at a time, one choice at a time . . . That's all that's expected of you, and all you can expect of yourself. If you are doing that you are living your life to its fullest, and as best you can. That's all we need to remember."

Have a great weekend!

I am no wonder woman. I guess I just burn my calories differently. I wish I could go to a gym and work out sometimes. Your right, I burn a lot of calories when I chop wood or do any of the activities that I do around here but the problem is that it lacks consistency. That is why I have been trying to do the mini work outs in the mornings; so that I can begin to get myself on a regular work out routine. That way when I have days that there isn't wood to chop or other outdoor activities to do, perhaps I keep in the rhythm of working out. Today my hubby has decided we need to go to town to pick up some supplies so this is a prime example of that kind of day but I'm going to go ahead and do my mini work out.

Oh yeah, Nancy ... I've dubbed Stacey our "Wonder Woman" because she does amazing things in her "real" life that I can't even imagine! What a inspiration .. what a great example! I am just amazed ...

I, too, felt a little "off my feed" and lacked energy today. I'm really hoping it's the weather getting cold and rainy that is bringing me down ... Good thing is tomorrow is a another day to excel! We can do it, ladies ... Let's kick some cardio/strength training bootie!

And Nancy ... I'm pulling for Anna too ... very talented young lady! I know you are proud!

Hey, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't chopping wood a pretty good workout? I'm so impressed with you.

I didn't end up doing so well yesterday; I didn't take a walk, I ate too much, and I didn't drink enough water. I'm doing much better today, but at the gym this morning I had to cut my cardio workout short because I didn't feel very well. Go figure. I think I was dehydrated and generally feeling yucky because of what I did yesterday. Just reaping the consequences of my own behavior.

Nancy: curiosity made me check on your daughter this morning and I see that she is moving up. Can't wait to see the final results. Keep us posted

Eda: thanks for your constant encouragement. Yesterday turned into a lot more than the little work out because we had to cut some firewood taken care of. We are already several days past when we normally get our first snow. With both my DH and then myself getting sick we are way behind in getting prepared so I took advantage of the day to chop a lot of wood and stack several loads (after hubby cut it) to start drying for next year. It's just laying on the ground now so he wants to get it up before snow fall so that it doesn't go to waste.

I managed day two of the short sparks video (New You bootcamp). They do seam very short and small but I thought it was a good idea to continue to start my morning that way and focus my energy on getting set for winter.

That is very exciting Nancy. Both the healthy day of eating and your daughter. I'll go take a look at it. (ok, I was just there and I agree, she has great talent. Looks like 594 people before me also agreed)

I'm feeling a little better today. I don't have my full energy back, but better than yesterday. I decided to do a small 10 minutes spark work out which seamed almost silly since it was so short but decided it was better than nothing while I recover.

Yesterday was a good day. Worked out at the gym and ate healthy and light all day. I made a big bowl of gazpacho, nice and spicy. One of my secret weapons.

We're pretty excited here at our house. My daughter made an audition video for the Glee Project (a show where they find a few kids to spend 12 weeks trying out for a temporary role on Glee) and submitted it. She's actually doing better than we ever anticipated. Her video is the 17th most popular so far! If you have a few minutes free sometime, go watch it, and if you like it, hit the "thumbs up" for her. http://www.thegleeprojectcasting.com/Audit

As her mom, I have always thought that she was very talented, but it's always nice to have that confirmed by others, too.

Hope you have a great day, today!

Stacey, the older I get, the more I realize how important rest is! Getting over being ill is so much harder than it used to be and staying healthy sometimes is too! Your body is using that energy that it would be expending exercising just to get better! Get better! emoticon

I read an article yesterday that said in a control group that they did a survey of that 1/3 of the group had started re-gaining weight within 18 months of successfully dropping to a desired goal weight ... and 2/3 had by the 5 year mark! The point they were making was that if we are thinking that we are "dieting", then there is an end mark, a period -if you will - to when we are "done". If we are, instead, making a lifestyle change, then the changes really will stick, they really will become daily habits! So --- for me --- "diet" is not longer in my vocabularly unless I am talking about a healthy diet that fuels this body! I'm ready to be a "done girl" ...

emoticon both of you on making October a healthy month. I've been pretty committed to doing that myself although I'm very disappointed in the way that the exercise is starting out. I'm still not feeling 100%. My husband, son, and I went for a hike up the mountain yesterday to pick up the last of our things from hunting camp. It's a hike I've made plenty of times but this time it was all I could do to finish. I was so tired. Then when we got home I was still very tired. Today I realize that I'm getting sick again so I didn't work out but rested instead. I sure hope I get my energy back soon.

Stacey, I'm sorry you got sick; I hope you are feeling much better, now.

Eda, It's always nice to use the beginning of the month for a fresh start! October is my favorite month of the year; I think I will join you in considering it a new beginning. My food hasn't been going so well either, but from now on, we're serious about this, right!?

Time for me to get up and go for a walk.

Oh Nancy, my heart is surely with you and your family. I have a dear, dear long time friend that is terminal with brain cancer and it is ripping my heart out. Being around her and feeling the peace she has made with her situation is so incredibly difficult because I want to hold on to her ... Life is indeed difficult. I am very happy you were able to spend time with your mom. My mom has just stopped working and I am anxious to get her started on the path to losing weight!

Stacey, I really hope you are feeling better already! Flu bug is no good! And believe it or not, I agree with your son about the milk shake. In the thousands of days you are going to live and the millions of bites you will put in your mouth, the memories you made today with your son will far outweigh the negatives. Especially with our children, you have to seize the opportunity to share special memories with them ... He will remember it because you made his wishes more important than your needs ... That's what moms do!

I looking forward to kicking October off in a much more positive manner with having a plan for the month with written out goals. I am still thrilled with my exercise but my eating ... not so much ... sigh ... I am determined that I can win this battle and move on! I know I can ... emoticon
