It's been so long since I've checked in that I thought I would see if you ladies were still around. Good to see you are doing well.

We are trying to stay warm here in Alaska but getting ready to head to South Sudan in about 6 weeks. We are so excited for the work we will be doing there. I'll be doing a womens bible study with a group of widows that work at the orphanage and teaching them to make quilts.

Hope you have a blessed Christmas

snow has been disappearing tho snow is forecast for tomorrow (Halloween) but the longer term forecast is pretty nice. Mind you, I'll be in Hawaii so the weather at home can be as nasty as it wants. I'll be warm and smiling!

full-fledged winter today: 30 cm of snow forecast. It's been snowing for about 16 hours so far.
It is sunny and it looks beautiful but I'd like to stay inside and not deal with the roads!

I'm thinking my goals will be to remain calm through the transition to a new schedule with less hour which translates to less money AND stay committed to my exercise schedule! Oh, and keep working on editing processed food out of my diet! I think I can do that!

LOL ... I never really thought about it that way ... Sorry! But even still ... snow??? By mid-week??? Yikes ... double that YIKES! Wow! I'm very thankful that we are still having the incredibly wonderful comfortably cool mornings and in the 80's (F) in the afternoons. Gives me time to get most everything done that I want to right now!

Yikes ... loving the cooler weather but not looking forward to the ZERO degrees anytime soon! How's everyone doing with your planning for the next 3-6 months? How's your eating doing with the cooler weather coming around?

I would say good for you but I REALLY love the cooling trend! I laugh because it won't be long and I'll be waiting til 11 am to run so that it can "at least" be 40 degrees out! I'm never happy ... never, never! LOL ...

I'm wishing the weather around here would figure out what it is doing! Too cool, too warm, too smoky, a little rainy ... it is just too funny to see all the changes in a 24 hour period! I'm having to pack a little of EVERYTHING in my workout bag!

Oh NO! That isn't good! Hope you have a speedy recovery but also hoping you make sure it is really good to go before you go back hard at it! Being unable to move around is hard ... better to have it hard for a little while than to have to wait to "re-heal". I'll be thinking of you!

I often cling to the bit of wisdom I stumbled on to not long ago.

"Don't confuse your path with your destiny. Just because it's stormy now doesn't mean you aren't headed for sunshine." ~ Unknown

I use little things like this to give me the boost I need in my spirit when it seems like I just can't keep on. I've found that often in life it helps immensely to focus on someone else. Gets my mind off my own problems!

Thank you so much Eda. I definitely needed that. I'm feeling better today and hope that I am making some positive changes in my life so that my future will be more positive.
Hope you are having a wonderful day.

Part 2---I went to read your most recent blogs because you are always inspiring. I read them in random order and I am just overwhelmed by the challenges and "stuff" you have had going on in the last few days--- and yet, you wrote this msg for me. I don't know what to say, my heart is just full. Thank you seems inadequate but that is the core of it. I'm not an artist so this is the emoticon of you.

May you reap God's richest blessings, as my Grandma used to say.

It's almost the weekend ... and weekends are notorious for knocking the old "exercise and great eating" habits right out of the ball park. You can sleep in, go out for breakfast, lunch and/or dinner - hang out with friends - or just kick back and relax ... but how much farther ahead will we be if we plan for this weekend to start with exercise? And a great healthy breakfast ... followed with great eating for the whole weekend! It's possible ... it just takes a plan ... and execution! We can do this! Have a great weekend!

I LOVE my friends to be brutally honest with me ... mostly because I trust them AND because I know that they are usually right! Maybe it's cuz I tend to be that way too! Not having an emotional attachment to things makes it easier for others to handle and evaluate things that we hang on to. And yes, I agree, housework IS a work out! Everytime I mop my kitchen floor on my hands and knees, I feel like I've been pulled on a rack! Oh yeah, definitely a workout!

Housework is definitely good exercise. Moving, bending, lifting....
If your friend is willing, I think you should let her help. If nothing else, it keeps you on task. I speak from experience! If she is too ruthless, try to set some ground rules, that it is your house, your stuff, your life. I have a friend who is very direct and yet, we have set the boundaries and I love when she comes to help me out.
Eda, sending you warm wishes for a great day and back to routines.
Take care.

Hello friends,

The low-carb/good carb/ good fat diet seems to be working well. I've started losing again, and I feel pretty good. I do have a smart hubby.

A friend came over yesterday and helped me clean out my closet. She was ruthless. I'm happy. I think she would help me with the rest of my house, but I need to do this myself. It's hard work, but I love the results. And the Salvation Army story has lots of new stuff! (Does cleaning out a closet count as exercise? I sure felt like I had a good workout!)

Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

I've heard it said that worrying means we don't trust God to handle our problems ... the same problems He allows us to face to grow in faith. I'm working on it!

I'm also working really hard to get back on the "healthy" side of my eating. My exercise is still great but my eating ... not so much! Of course with being away this weekend it was hard to eat healthy all the time but now I'm venturing into green smoothies and lots of other fruits and veggies as my stable instead of carbs. Slowly but surely I'm convinced I can turn this wagon train around, no matter how stubborn the mule leading it is! emoticon

Thanks, Eda and Lynette, for the encouragement!
The low-carb/good carb thing is still going well. The weight is inching back off and I'm feeling better. Now I just have to get the exercising back in gear!

Worry: that's something I'm really struggling with myself. I worry about my daughter, Anna, all the time. I know she's okay; she's an adult, she can take care of herself. But . . .

Nancy: Hip hip hurray for your very smart hubby! It is so easy to fall back into comfortable old patterns of eating .... or find new ones! Sounds like you guys are getting back on track! Good for you!

Lynette: Thanks for all your positive support and encouragement! It is priceless!

As for me, if I can get some of my emotions that are all over the place under control, my eating will fall back into line. My biggest problem is the girl I see in the mirror every morning. She worries about things she can't changes and wishes with all her heart for things that she can't make happen. I know that ... I just have to work harder to accept it. No matter what, I HAVE to take care of myself FIRST! Thanks for sharing in my lecture to myself!

We finally got some rain and cooler temps here in OK. Thank God.

Hubby had a good idea for us. We both seem to have been having a really hard time with eating since we got back from Italy, and he suggested we both needed to get rid of carb cravings. Of course! After a diet of pizza, pasta, risotto and gelato, we were re-addicted to the worst kind of carbs. So we are doing phase one of the South Beach diet for a couple of weeks. We're eating nothing but lean protein and lots of veggies, with plenty of olive oil. Already we both feel so much better! And the cravings are not too bad. He's so smart.

Hope your rump feels better, Eda! emoticon

Have a great Sunday!

We had a great time considering how hot it is in the Pacific Northwest these days! I'll post a long blog tomorrow about our trip! It was fun but whew-weee ,,, my rump is so sore! Wow!

we're all in this together! I have switched into a phase that feels productive and I'm very happy about it. Weight has gone back down to where it was and I think/hope I'm on a downward run. Have been working in my house and it is a distraction from eating and a source of accomplishment.
Hope you have a great time while you are away, Eda!

No worries, Nancy ... we're in the same boat. I've been kicking myself for weeks now because my "holding steady" has become backwards motion! emoticon I keep telling myself that the blessing is that I know how to turn things around. It's going back to the small basics that got me launched in the first place. I know we can do this ... I'm here with you!

***** Just wanted everyone to know that I won't be on the computer for a few days as my DH and I are headed out to enjoy a little time away from real life. It is kind of bad timing with my mom's surgery but the plans were made months ago and we just don't feel led to cancel them. I wish you all the best in everything that you do! Hugs, Eda

Hi Eda!

I'm having a really hard time getting back to my program. I keep gaining weight!!! I start the day out okay, but lose focus in the afternoon. I'm really mad at myself.

Thanks for your kind words about taking care of Mom. It makes a big difference to get a little encouragement.

Hope you have a great day!

Thought for the day: "When writing the story of your life, don't let anyone else hold the pen."

Wow! What a powerful thought! How many times do we perceive that someone else is controlling our circumstances or that we "can't" achieve something because of roadblocks that seem to appear before us? Let's go forth and fight the good fight!

Nancy ... Let me say from truly the bottom of my heart that I love that you make the time and the effort to travel to help care for your mom (not to mention the expense!). Your brother, I am sure, does every single thing that he can but the load is often heavy to carry alone. Thank you for doing what I wish my family would do.

Today was "cooking day" and I love cooking day! Since we are skipping town for most of the week, I didn't invest much in the eats for this week which means I had more time to spend helping Mom and Sparking ... LOL ... she is doing pretty good and only needs my help sporadically now! I am very happy with her progress! As for me, I am doing good on the exercise, not so much on the eating ... Hopefully having fresh food and having stuff fixed in the fridge will put a halt to my roaming grazing habit I'm developing! Yikes!

We had a really nice time last night; the food was great, but the company was better! And I didn't eat too much and only had one glass of wine, then switched to water.

I wish I could just have my mom here, but we live 500 miles apart, so I have to go there to take care of her. Fortunately, my brother lives close to her and his wife is wonderful, but I still feel like I need to be there to do my part, and these trips are hard. I have to find a way to make them better.

Have a good week!

Oh Nancy ... welcome home! And how exciting about the dinner tonight! While we are endeavoring to NOT be centered around food, there are times when gathering with friends and family is the RIGHT thing to do. Portion control is really where I tend to bite it in these situations! Whatever happens, don't let it get you down. Enjoy the company and the memories you are making, then move on tomorrow!

As for me, I haven't been paying attention to much at home since last Wednesday. Mom is now home from the hospital and here with at least overnight but probably until Wednesday. I'm trying to cobble together dinner out of what is in the cupboards and the fridge ... I'll be honest ... things look pretty bleak! emoticon emoticon We're having wheat pasta with a marinara sauce that I added kidney beans to ... with a light Cesaer Salad, green beans and biscuits. The biscuits we can cut in half so they aren't so many calories or carb.

I need to go grocery shopping tomorrow ... no excuses!

Hello ladies!

Got back from my trip; it was pretty bad when I got home and got back on the scale. Back on track today, for sure!

I have a difficult dinner to go to tonight. It will be fun; we're visiting with some of our new friends from Italy. Wine and risotto. Not the best diet food, but I will try to do really well the rest of the day.

Hi Nancy ... thanks for posting! It sounds like you are continuing to live life to the fullest! I have always had a dream about living in Chicago but being a farm girl at heart, I think I'd best stay here. I can't imagine how hard it was to leave your daughter there to start a new direction in her life. But change is ... something that is bountiful in this life!

Congrats on checking in! Have a great rest of your summer!

Hi All!

I'm away from home visiting my mom; it's always a challenge for me to keep on my program while I am away. I've done okay today and yesterday, but no so great before. I was helping my daughter move to Chicago before that and it was really difficult. As much as I am happy for her, it's hard to leave here there in the big city on her own.

The new goal possibilities look fun! Belly dancing while teeth brushing, hmmm. I could give it a try, I guess, but my hubby's reaction will be interesting.

Hope you are all doing well. Good to hear from you again!

How about:
writing a note of encouragement to another member of the team 1x week
having a salad as the main course 3x week
adding a source of fiber to one meal per day
replacing one meal with a smoothie 3x week
choosing to laugh about something that could have been viewed negatively 1x day
adding a bit of exercise to your day by dancing for at least 10 minutes
stair-climb while on the phone 1x day
belly-dance while brushing your teeth 1x day

Different note (same song ... LOL) ... I would like to put our heads together and come up with some different team goals. I still like 500 fitness minutes per month but think we could do something different for the other ones ... any ideas?

If you've had a dramatic loss, it is probably an expression of concern. I lost a lot of weight very rapidly due to emotional trauma, and friends who had seen me just a month before were afraid that I was terminally ill. I didn't realize how awful I looked and I had reached a weight that was wonderful on paper, but ghastly in reality.

Can anyone shed some light on the statement "Don't get TOO thin!" when it is made to me by someone I know is a friend and cares for me? Is that like a warning ... a threat ... or discouragement? It certainly doesn't seem like a positive statement!

If you're in my age group, you might recognize the song lyrics that are on my huddle today ... emoticon "On my own ... once again ... Oh my own ... by myself .... No one said it was easy" emoticon ... I can hear Michael McDonald and Patti LaBelle so clearly in my head ... oh yeah ...

I highlighted an article on Robyn Lawley, Vogue's new size 16 plus model! I am very impressed with that young lady! She is beautiful ... and she has some belly ... and she has a blog called "Robyn Lawley Eats" ... Unbelievable!

Hope you had a wonderful day!

Good morning! emoticon Another day to excel ... I have been blessed with TWO WHOLE DAYS of no obligations outside of my homestead! I am so excited! Right now I'm fueling to workout (not exactly sure what's on the schedule ... haven't decided quite yet) and then hopefully it will stay cool for a little while so I can get some work done in my flowerbeds that dearly need it! Tks Eda.
I don't want to make more work for you and I am active on a few other sites, so pls don't feel you need to do anything heroic to save this group. Let's see what kind of a response there is before making a decision to "pull the plug" or not!

Hi there Ladies ...

Thanks, Lynette, for messaging me that people are posting some again. I had stopped coming by since there wasn't anyone here! It was depressing me!

Stacey, sorry I missed that you had a fall and broke a rib! That is horrible! I truly hope you are feeling better and are able to get out some!

Nancy, how are you doing? I would tell you not to despair over the 20 pounds but I know the frustration that comes with the acceptance that you lost it once, now you have to do it all over again. I trust that you are making headway!

I had already messaged Lynette but in case anyone was wondering, I had read some time ago that Paula passed away quite some time ago. I'm not sure where Echo went but she disappeared quite awhile ago as well. I have thought about just abandoning the team since I don't seem to be much of a leader and I'm not sure how to encourage people to draw together to support each other. I would be more than willing to let someone else lead if you feel the urge to. My prayers are with each of you as we continue to move forward ... Life isn't easy and the journey is never "done" ... we simply move from one phase to another!

Hugs, Eda

I haven't been here for quite some time and I see that it says our team leaders are not posting. I hope everything is ok as Paulastras' last blog was about the collapse of her ex.
I will attempt to contact a few people and see if we can get back in touch/active.

Went for a walk again today, and the foot is okay. I'm doing the stretching exercises recommended and that seems to be helping. I'm going to St. Louis for a few days to visit my mom; if it doesn't get much better in the meantime, I'll probably go see a doc when I get back.

I'm doing some strength exercises again, too, and a little bit of yoga. It feels good to be getting back to healthy habits. The eating is going okay, but yesterday a friend called and invited me to dinner at a new Mexican restaurant in town. Bit mistake. And it took too long to get our food, which meant, of course, more chips and salsa. Oh well. It's gong okay today, so far.

Sorry about the rain; its getting hot where I am again. I walked before 8:00 am, and it still got hot by the time I got home. I guess I'll have to get up earlier.

yeah Nancy, you may need to go back to the doctor. I'm the last person that should say that because I always avoid going but it sounds like you might need to.

I'm headed out for a slow, wet (rain, rain, and more rain) walk.

I just don't know. I've been to a doc, but that was a long time ago. I still have the boot that I wore for six weeks a couple of years ago, and I wear that when it really hurts, but when I had trouble in Italy I didn't have it with me, so I suffered through and limped (and hurt my back and knees in the process) and probably did more damage. I suppose I'll have to go back to the doc at some point, but am being lazy and putting it off. It doesn't feel too bad today, so I may try a little, very slow, walk. We'll be slow-walking in sympathy with each other. emoticon

The food part seems to be going okay today. I'm trying.

Yes it is challenging when you can't do cardio. How long do you expect to be off your feet?

I managed a very slow walk which sure didn't feel like cardio for someone who is use to running but it was something.

Thanks, Stacey. It's good to be back. Exercise is not going well for me at all. My Achilles tendonitis is acting up again and I'm in a boot, which makes my back hurt. Sigh. I'm going to try to do lots of stretching and upper body strength stuff, but can't do much in the way of cardio, which is what I really need. Frustrating, isn't it? Hope you feel better soon!

I've been laid up for a couple weeks because I had a fall and broke a rib. It is still pretty painful all the time. The sun is shining and I wish I could get out and run but it hurts event to walk.

How is exercise going for you ladies?

Hi All!

I'm finally back from Italy. I didn't post much from over there, I'm afraid. Things were just so different; it was hard to get into any kind of routine. But I'm back now, and getting back to my program.

I need to; I'm afraid I gained about 20 pounds back! Yuck! At first, the horrible (but delicious!) diet didn't seem to hurt much because of how much exercise I was getting. We lived at the top of a large hill, up three flights of very steep stairs, and I was going out all the time. But then some of my physical problems started flaring up and I couldn't get out as much. Then I must admit I got a little lazy. Anyway, I wasn't getting as much exercise, but my diet was still pizza, pasta and gelato!

Aside from the dieting and health issues, we had a fabulous time! I love Italy, I love Italians, the OU students there were great, the other professors and their families were wonderful. Arezzo is a great city. We traveled a lot and saw a lot of Italy I'd never seen before, as well as other places in Europe. I know the whole thing has set me back some as far as health, but it was well worth it!

I took a ton of pictures and will get some up on my photo album pretty soon. There are a lot on my Facebook page and if any of you are interested, send my a friend request.

Hi there!

Lynette: I totally agree with you ... there is no place like home! I always wish for a vacation to recover from my vacation, no matter how much I enjoyed myself. I just like to be home ... especially in my own bed with my own pillow!

Stacey: I agree totally with you, too! I much prefer to run in the cold weather than in the warm or hot weather. In our race on Saturday, it got to over 60 degrees and I was feeling pretty warm but didn't think about it. I was startled later that evening as the sunburn started to peek out and I understood why I was feeling so awful after the race. I am not heat tolerant at ALL! emoticon Oh well ... Just reading your post made my toes cold!

So how's everybody doing now? It's been awhile since we've been posting ...

Eda: We do run in some pretty cold weather but I think we are finding that we enjoyed running in the winter more. The summer seams so busy and we find to many reasons why we shouldn't run. My cut off for running is -22. I know that sounds like an odd number but it's when my weather station no longer registers the weather. It just says off line which says to me: just to cold. Denver (my DH) will run up to -30 but we do have to run with a face mask any time it is colder than -10. In the winter we get to run the dog sled trails and it is so nice just being out in the woods. The trails are wet and muddy now though so we have to run the road and we really find it more work and less peaceful than running in the winter.

Lynette: Glad to hear that you are only one pound from getting back to where you were. I is difficult when you are traveling and you are right: always good to be home.
Welcome back.

hi all!
I've been back since last Sunday and trying to get lots of things done incl getting back to routines. I did not too badly with weight gain and the scale is responding to my efforts so have lost since I got home. Only one pound to get back to where I was when I left, if memory serves.
Stacey, glad you had a respite from the north and that you were able to do lots of visiting.
I did go thru Idaho (and many other states) on my trip. Every place has its charms, pros and cons. But there is no place like home, as the saying goes!

Thanks Stacey! Sorry it took me so long to reply! I've gotten a little (a lot) lax about checking in! Congrats on not gaining everything BACK and for taking along your running shoes! How's your husband feeling? I loved the picture of when you guys got back from running and it was minus 18 degrees! Makes me feel like a sissy complaining about our weather here!

How's it going being back at home?

How is everyone doing? Sorry that I haven't been on much checking in. We did a month of traveling the lower 48 to visit 5 of the 8 kids, 4 grandkids, and our parents. We added in some business along the way to help pay for the trip. My DH and I continued to get in our runs while we were gone although not as much as at home. We also stayed on track with eating healthy. We usually do this kind of trip every March and usually I end up regaining everything I've lost the entire year but this year I actually lost a pound on the trip and over all just feel great.

Hmmm ... You might travel through Idaho, even if for just a short part of the trip! If not, you'll be completely traveling around us! I hope you have a great time!

My American geography knowledge is not 100% but won't we go through Idaho? Are you on our path?

You ladies are making me long for warm temps! We woke up to another skiff of snow again this morning and the wind has been really blowing all day ... Brrr ...

Stacey - take care of that leg! I'll try the heated magic bag on my hip. It is feeling much better but when I ran home from my mom's house tonight, I could tell there is a little pain still. Tomorrow is a 3 mile run ... We'll see ...

Lynette - You are going to go all around me! I didn't see Idaho anywhere in your trip plans ... but what I did see looks like you are going to have a fabulous time!

I need to plan a trip somewhere warm ... emoticon

my bf''s brother and wife are going to be in Palm Springs for a month and have invited us for a short visit, next to see my daughter in Palo Alto, on to friends in Seattle, and then bf's daughter in Vancouver. BF has never been to Salt Lake City or the Oregon coast so those are two areas we want to see as well so we are connecting the dots and making a grand adventure of it!

That sounds like a great adventure. Is it just for the fun of seeing all that country or will there be people that you are visiting along the way?

I am taking it easy on the leg because I really am looking forward to the joy of running in warmer weather. I can only imagine how good it feels to run without a coat.

Pamper that leg so that you are ready to go--you are going to have such a good time on your big trip! Warmer weather will be very welcome for you. Our weather has been up and down and I am looking fwd to April in the US: south thru Montana, Utah, NV, CA then up the coast thru Oregon, WA, to Vancouver and east to home. Haven't set the exact route but it will be an adventure!

A heated magic bag. What a wonderful surprise. I could use one of those this morning. It's -23 out.

I went for a run yesterday but about 3/4 of a mile into it I felt this odd pain at the back at the bend of the knee. It was almost like the feeling of something in my pants stinging me every once in awhile (there was nothing there however). I slowed to a walk but I still felt it every little bit so I hobbled my way back home. Today it feels better but with the cold temperatures and yesterdays pain, I think I should just take the day off from running and do some strength training inside; something that doesn't strain the knees in any way.

loooved the story about the kind son; these sorts of things make parenting so rewarding. When I was at my daughter's, the first night she put the heated magic bag into the bed: what a sweet surprise for me when I slid in!

Oh .... how sweet is that! You and your husband have obviously instilled a great heart in that boy! Going out of his way for asparagus on sale to see the smile on your face is something only a mature young man would do ... In an age where all I hear is complaining about how people parent their children, I say WELL DONE!

Packing for the different climates is all about layering....and a really big suitcase. Also, we'll take advantage of mom's washer during the time we are there.

The funniest thing happened last night: well the store goes back to a couple days ago when the sales paper for the grocery store arrived in the mail. My DH was outside but my son overheard me being disappointed that asparagus was on sale for $1.28 a pound and yet I would not be driving the 100 miles to town this week just to buy asparagus. The moment was then forget as I continued through my normal days. Yesterday, my son was invited by some friends to go to town skiing with them. When he arrived home; with a smile on his face he unzipped his backpack and pulled out a grocery bag and handed it to me. As soon as I touched the bag I knew what it was and began to laugh in excitement. My husband wondered what our son had brought as a gift to his mom that would leave her so excited. He was pretty surprised to find out it was asparagus. The kids made a stop at the store so he could bring it home to me. I am blessed.

Sorry to hear about your mom Eda. I'll keep you and her in my prayers.

Life has been very busy for me here in Alaska but I am looking forward to our vacation coming up in a couple weeks. We are going to San Diego for a week and during that time our son that lives in LA will be coming down to stay a couple days at the hotel with us. The rest is business. Then we are going to Minneapolis to see the grandkids. We skype with them now but after what you said Nancy, I'm even more excited. I didn't think about how they would recognize us more now after the visit. It's been a year since we've seen them and the oldest is 3 so it made me think of your grandson. Then we are going to Michigan to see my mom and my husbands parents. I can't wait to see everyone again although it will be very hard to stay on track while we are gone. Although since Denver (my hubby) had the heart attack, he is pretty determined to eat well and exercise so it helps to keep me on track as well.
