Very pleased to be able to say I've lost two pounds in the two weeks I've been back at Spark! The last time I was consistently Sparking I had just found out my thyroid is dead and just started on lifelong medication for it. My metabolism has been slow my entire life and losing weight has always been hard for me. I think my thyroid was sluggish for years before it gave up the fight and died! Now I am having an easier time of it, at least at the moment - no telling when I'll hit that first plateau, but for now I'm excited and eager to continue my weight-loss journey!

How was your last week?

Hi Sharon,

I'm glad you had a balanced week - some good stuff to counteract the celebration days. At least you're maintaining! I'm glad you're able to walk outside. I think you can make it a habit!!! Woohoo!

Have a great week!

Cheers,
Heidi
P.S. I've been tracking on the March Fitness thread this month. However, with Laurie no longer having internet, I think it is just me, lol. Joanie replies there occasionally.

Well, the week that just was, was.....well, not the best. I did some really good things, extra walking, good food choices, etc, but there were also some pretty big challenges in the form of celebrations that I didn't do well with. I over-ate 3 days, which totally outshined the exercise I was doing, but at least I didn't gain weight. I did get my extra 10 in most days though, but sadly not all.

The snow is starting to go down FAST and if it keeps up at the rate we are going, should be gone by the end of next week. I've been able to walk outside two days after work, and hope to make it a habit. Hopefully I'll have better results to report next week.

Let's make it a great one!

Thanks, Laurie. I was able to mention it, but didn't have the chance to get online and show it to her. She seemed vaguely interested. I think that if I can show it to her - and show her my before picture... I think she'd be interested. I told her that my starting weight was around 97 kilos (212 pounds - she's Austrian, so thinks in kilos). I think she said she weighs 94 kilos (about 206 pounds), but she's shorter than I, so she is in a similar position to where I started. She's an interesting woman. Their son is deaf, and has a multitude of other problems, both physical and intellectual. I admire her strength, and would really love to be able to help her get healthy!

Have a great weekend everyone!!!

Cheers,
Heidi

Sharon - I'm jealous about your snow! We need more snow for skiing here!!! Wish I could take yours. So excited for your fresh start! And woohoo for getting in your 10 extra minutes all week! Good for you! And what a cool feeling to have that extra walking at work start to be a habit. Awesome! Little things add up - and since they are easier to incorporate into our daily lives, sometimes more productive than getting in a big one! Good for you!

What's your fun event? I am looking at dinner at a friend's tonight, so I'll have to do the same - a bit of having fun, and a bit of behaving! Actually, the wife of the guy who is cooking has been struggling with her weight. It is really hard when we have husbands who like to cook! Anyway, I'm thinking of introducing her to spark. I don't want to be obtrusive about it, but she has brought up her struggle a couple of times - it just usually isn't in a place in the conversation where I can really talk to just her about it. Hopefully, I'll find a way to pull her aside tonight.

Great work!

Cheers,
Heidi

Oooops! I lost my train of thought! I did get my 10 extra minutes in all week except for Sunday. Sunday I was a total slug and didn't even leave the house. The extra walking at work is starting to be a habit, and that's a really good thing. I did decide to let the bootcamp (and the daily videos that go along with it) fall to the wayside, but I have been doing the Quickfire Challenge on the days that it's feasible. I could certainly still be doing more, but at least I'm moving in the right direction. Here's to another good week!

Yes, Vegas does sound great....especially when I'm still up to my ears in snow (ok, that's a SLIGHT exaggeration, but it is still way past my knees and the snowbanks are still almost as tall as me) and the temps are dropping yet again. I so love to travel....wish I were planning somewhere warm right about now!

I've made somewhat of a fresh start this week.....hopefully it'll show up on my scale this weekend! I might have to delay the weigh-in for a day though, because tomorrow night is going to be more about having fun than behaving....although I'll try to do a little bit of both, lol!

HI Joanie,

Thanks for the link to that article. I liked the optimism in it!

Sorry to hear that you and your DH were out of work at the same time for so long... glad thing are okay now.

Free room in Vegas! It doesn't get much better than that! Awesome! And how sweet that you and your husband can enjoy the drive together - traveling with my sweetie isn't so easy, lol. What a fun trip. I'm so glad you got to go! Yes, temptation everywhere in Vegas! But it sounds like you made the most of a spur of the moment opportunity - good for you!

Cheers,
Heidi

Oh yes! -- Sharon, I meant to include you in the sunshiny vibes; I know things are crummy on the work front for you too. Losing a job (and I think you're having to train others too? How much does that suck?!) is hard on so many fronts; financial, of course, but also self-esteem and even (at least it was for me) self-identity. And it's doubly hard to keep up with a healthy lifestyle in tough times like this, even when you KNOW it's doubly important to do it!

I got kind of a great article from a Spark friend today; I thought I'd share it with all the girls here:
www.sparkpeople.com/resource/wellness_ar
ticles.asp?id=98

At least for me, the long wait (1.5 years unemployed, me AND the Hubs at the same time, gah!) ended last November; I was hired back at the same place I was before! Things are going pretty well, but it's weird to be here knowing there are no guarantees with the job...I was here for 13 years before and kind of thought I'd be here forever!

And Heidi, the trip was to Las Vegas -- we used to go a lot before The Great Layoff of 2009, but we hadn't been in a very long while...a friend of the Hubs' was there at a convention and we got an offer out of the blue for a free room (I guess a legacy from our many trips there in the past!) AND we're close enough to drive, so we went! It was pretty fun, but like I said, temptation EVERYWHERE!! Temptation to eat, temptation to drink, temptation to spend money -- yikes!!! Still, it was fun to get away -- even the drive there was fun. I think that's one of the things we used to enjoy most about going there -- we talk and laugh the whole way there (about 4 hours). I guess we're meant for each other if we can spend that much time in a small car and actually enjoy ourselves!!!

HI Joanie,

I've had that happen before too. Bummer. Where did you go on your trip? At least you got in some good steps. No longer on a diet is a good thing. This is a healthy lifestyle that we're working on here! I'm actually glad that I can't find baked cheetos in our stores here, lol. But I have other little bugaboos that I shouldn't snack on quite so liberally.

Thanks for sending good vibes to Laurie... I'm sending them too! And for Sharon when her job ends soon.

Cheers,
Heidi

How odd -- I posted yesterday here...or so I thought! I guess I didn't hit "post"? Duhhh...Well, I guess I'll just recap. Just got back from a couple days away; didn't do too bad in the food deptartment, but I *did* have waaaay too many gin and tonics! :\ I got my 5000 steps in daily but that's about it. And this week hasn't been much better; I've been getting my steps in (barely) but only about half of the strength-training exercises I've been trying to add. AND, I seem to have decided that I'm no longer on a diet!!! I think the past four days I've gone over my calorie goal -- not by a HUGE amount, but by like 200 calories or so, and it's going to add up. Sigh. At least I'm eating healthy foods, for the most part ***coughbakedcheetoscoughcough*** but I need to be a bit more diligent in keeping things more in check.

And Laurie, I'm so sorry to hear about what's going on with you; I know how hard things can be 'cause me and the Hubs were both out of work for a year and a half and it got pretty scary there for awhile. BUT I am so happy for you that you left what sounded like a crappy job -- you're right -- no amount of money is worth being cheated and working somewhere you hate!!! And in closing the door on that nasty situation, you've opened yourself up for opportunities elsewhere! Maybe THD will have some opportunities for you you can take advantage of? I'm sending good vibes your way and know that things will get better!

Ack! I've got to go to a meeting (does anyone here hate meetings as much as I do?!) I fill my notebook with endless doodles of frustrated, angry cats whenever I'm in one.

Talk to you guys soon!

Joanie

Hello Ladies!

Sharon - You are right... stress isn't going to get any better by itself (unless things that you don't have any control over change). Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you figure out some coping strategies. Doing more walking throughout the day at work is certainly helping in multiple ways. For one, it gets your body up and moving. Awesome! But also, it gives you a little break from the stress of whatever you are doing. Granted, as you walk, you may still be 'working' on whatever stress or problems you are dealing with, but it won't be nearly as intense as the stress that builds up just sitting at a desk!

I hear you about finding yourself in a position where the things that you were doing well (nutrition) and the things that you weren't (fitness) have switched places. For me, whenever I increase my activity, my body goes into, "Oh, I'm an athlete again, and I can eat whatever I want" mode. And that is NOT the case. Not only can I not eat whatever I want ever again, lol, but I am not ever going to be the athlete I was in the 80's. 4 hours of swimming per day is simply never going to happen again. Not only that, but even when I do exercise, it will never have the intensity it did when I was training. So, I'm with you about needing to figure out how to get both eating and fitness on track at the same time!

Laurie - Wow! I am so sorry! First of all, even though things will be tighter for awhile, I think I have to say congratulations! It sounds like you're standing up for yourself. I am so incredibly happy that working at Home Depot has shown you that having a job doesn't have to be the hell you've been going through at your other job! I am sorry that they shorted you, and that they are then trying to blame it on you. That is really low. Thank goodness for such a sweet kid that was so generous and kind. I just typed, then cut something that I'll send you in a sparkmail :).

The black bean, lentil, and rice dish sounds delicious! Let us know how it turns out! As for Sunday's steps... woohoo! I agree, you need to get out in the store :). Way better for the feet than standing in one place. Can you march in place? For me, standing that much would kill my knees. I can walk forever, but my knees can't handle standing in one place. I hope you get more time out in the store.

Best wishes for quitting today. I'm so glad your DH is going with you - a little moral support! I wish I could go with you myself to see that they gave you back the $30 that they shorted you!

Cheers,
Heidi

Laurie, I'm sorry times are so tough for you right now. We are also stretched to the limit, but so far staying above water. Not sure how it will work out when the severance period for my job ends in September. Hopefully things will turn around by then and I will find a new job right away.

However, you're really going to town with the step-tracking! You are putting in a lot of miles that way! Keep up the good work!

Wednesday I worked my sit-down job. Grand total of 1,014 steps for the day! WooHoo! LOL! Nothing extra, I'm afraid
Thursday: At the store, mostly tied to a register, 5,201 steps, not what I would count as extra.
Friday: Does fuming and panic count as cardio? The sit-down job shorted me $30 on my paycheck. Doesn't sound like much to most people, I know, but it was our grocery money for the week. They're claiming that I "overbilled" them on a job I did, saying it went out shorter than I said it did. Okay, I'll buy that, but 55 pages short on a 75-page job? Huh-uh, no way, Jose! Anyway, a coworker at the store heard my panic as I was telling my supervisor what had happened (in tears, as it was only about 15 minutes later) and took pity on me. He met me at my locker, opened his wallet and handed my $20 and said "Pay me back next week." Friends, this boy isn't much more than 25 or 26. And I don't work closely with him at all, he's in a completely different job profile than I am. I was stunned and grateful all at the same time. He will be a very good leader as he matures even more. I was able to shop after work, and at least get us in some eggs, bread, rice, Ramen noodles, and hamburger! Spanish rice was good last night! Tonight is black bean soup, from beans we already had in the pantry, with some lentils and rice in it. Sounds like a good recipe, I hope it is. Oh, 4,689 steps

Saturday: Cashiering again, 4,698 steps.

Sunday: Today I cashiered some, but was given a project that involved collecting products from several departments around the store, so 8,257 steps. And my feet don't hurt today as much as they did the last two days when I was just standing around the registers. I definitely think I need to get out on the floor!

Tomorrow I am working 8:30 to 12:30, then DH and I are going to my place of sit-down work and I am quitting on the spot. I've taken way too much crap from that place over the years and I'm done. I now have a better option! Things will be tighter yet for a while, but I can no longer sacrifice my sanity and peace of mind for a hundred dollars a week.

Take care, my friends! Catch you later!

Laurie

Yep....here we are at another week. I'm vowing - once again - to do better this week and so far today I'm doing well. I've just been letting things slide for too long and it just has to stop! I'm ruining my health and that's not going to help the stress levels one bit. The stress will continue to be there....so now I need to put some new coping strategies into place.

Anyway, for last week I didn't do the bootcamp 10-minute videos at all. I did make it a point to do more walking throughout the day each day at work, and to do more concentrated heavy housework on the weekend days. Also my treadmill sporadically, but at least some.

Funny....for me for some time now I've had the nutrition piece of the puzzle down pretty well, but fell behind in the exercise piece. Now I feel like that's going the other way. I sooooo need to get my eating back on track!

It is a new week ladies! Let's get in lots of little extras that will help us get healthy!
And thanks, Sharon, for the good Thursday wishes! I hope everyone has a great week!

2/27: Skiing and rodeling (sledding and hiking)... lots of extra minutes!
2/28: grocery shopping - 4 different stores, plus making a couple of trips lugging heavy sacks up the driveway and up two flights of stairs... made my sweetie get the rest, lol.
3/1: extra extended walk! Plus 1 hr bowling. Plus about an hour dancing! Woohoo!

I agree about the benefits of small groups, Heidi. It's too easy to get lost in the crowd with some of the teams....and most of those I end up dropping out of for that very reason.

Have a great Thursday, everybody.....and at least 10 extra minutes tomorrow!

Hi Ladies!

Track however you like! The important thing is to get in some activity each day. Woohoo!

Awesome work already this week!

Joanie - 10,000+ steps is an impressive goal. Way to go! Keep up the great work!

Laurie - Narrative is great too. I love hearing about your THD experiences! Sounds like your home project is also going well. I think it would have been interesting if you could have had your muscles measured before starting this job and now! Great work! And it is so awesome that your DH does that for you. Real romance is taking care of each other, even when it isn't the most fun. Awesome!

Sharon - Good for you for finding a new set of challenges and jumping in there! I hope this is the kick you've been looking for!

I just love reading about everyone's activities and the support we all give each other. Actually, it is interesting that I am enjoying a small group better, as I feel like I really know how each of you are doing through the week! Happy Wednesday everyone!

Cheers,
Heidi

Yep, Laurie....narrative is my style too. Oh--and thanks for steering me toward the quick-fire team. They are a little intense....but I have been doing their challenges every day so far. (well, that's 3 counting tomorrow, lol, but you know what I mean.....)

PS: Aspercreme-ing your feet for you....now that's true love!

I'm just not so good at those daily charts you guys fill in everyday so I'm just going to go with narrative style, if that' s okay.

Monday: 4 hours at the store, plus our shower project, which is coming along in fits and starts. We got the crosspiece up but now have to wait 'til we can afford the rest of the pieces for the wall and molding we need to do.
Tuesday: 8 hours at the store, including learning to cut blinds and what kind of grout to use with glass tiles! LOL!

Between the two days I put in 19,250 steps. I forgot to reset my pedometer this morning, so I don't really know how it splits up, but I certainly think it's a good two-day total! Man, do my feet hurt tonight! I'm so glad DH doesn't mind rubbing them with the Aspercreme for me before bed! Sounds real romantic, eh? LOL!

2/20: I am very stoked and proud to say that I got in 10157 steps today!
2/21: 10101 steps today!
(I was going to try to get in 10,000 steps each day of the three-day weekend; didn't manage it for Saturday, but Sunday and Monday I did! Hurrah!)

2/20: Rest day. Did nothing but sit on my butt all day :(.
2/21: Extended walk, plus half the laundry (4 trips down and up 3 flights)
2/22: Regular walk, plus the other half of the laundry (5 trips)
2/23: Skiing! Lots of extra fitness minutes :). Actually, we didn't ski all day, but had a good hard couple of hours!
2/24: Big day! I did 65 minutes of xbox, 90 minutes of heavy cleaning, plus an extended walk for groceries after singing! Woohoo!
2/25: Extended walk
2/26: Extended walk

The extended walk, folks, means that in addition to walking to the school to practice, that I had to walk to town for groceries. So, in addition, to my music and etc in my backpack, there were groceries (significant weight) on my back on the way home. And, since we haven't had a car in months, I've not been taking the beer bottles to get the deposit back - so I've been lugging a dozen of them with me on my way. I suppose that counts for extra effort!

Cheers,
Heidi

Hello ladies!

I've been a slacker at replying. Sorry. I did quite a bit of traveling last week, and was also coughing like an idiot for much of the time. Anyway, I'm better now, and back at it. So, I'll catch up with what's been going on!

Joanie - love your enthusiasm and support! I have to laugh about the box of Valentine's chocolates that you bought "for your husband." Me too. Well, I got him 10 chocolate balls when I was in Switzerland. I only had 2, so I'm feeling pretty good about that. I usually buy him chocolate with nuts in it that I won't eat, but alas... they were really good! That antique swapmeet sounds like a really fun place to walk. I love looking through antiques (even though I can't buy anything either). I love your advice and attitude about giving yourself a break. This is really about changing to a healthier lifestyle, and we can do it!!!

Sharon - I feel for you! Not only are you losing your job, but it seems you're the one that everyone is relying on for support. Not a fun position to be in. I find that for me, there is a line between enjoying the support I give to others, and feeling burdened by the support that is demanded by others. I really hope that you can find that line and step back to the side where helping others is not stressful. You, too, need some support during this time. Don't let your coworker's needs outweigh your own. I hope you are able to find that shove you are looking for to get started on the right path again. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help. And I hope your back is feeling better and better!

Laurie - Baby steps! What great advice! I love the basic 3. I do get in enough water, and generally speaking, I do get in my walk to town and back almost every day. It is the darn food tracking that I hate. That is the key, though, if I am going to make any progress, lol. I am aware of it... just need to do it! I'm glad you're enjoying your Quickfire team. That sounds like it is really good for you. Congrats on your Garden Department certification! How many departments have you certified in so far? How many do you have left? Good for you for stretching when you can between customers. That's great! Let us know how the project is going!

As for me... I'll post my actual exercise in a separate one - to keep it simple for the week.

Cheers everyone!
Heidi

Sounds like baby steps are in order, Sharon. That's what I have to do any time I get off track for a while - dial it back to the basic three: 8 to 10 glasses of water a day; track every bite, and move at least something every day! One of my favorite restart teams is the QuickFire Challenge team, where they set a new daily exercise to do several times during your day. I'm particularly fond of "booty kicks" lol! AND when I haven't been doing it for a while, it counts as my ten minutes extra for here too!

Updates for me - yesterday I only got 3,026 steps, but I finished my garden department certification training on the computers, so I'm happy with that.

Today I was on registers all day, but still managed 5,040 steps on the pedometer, plus lots of stretching when no one was looking! LOL!

Tomorrow I only work four hours, but DH and I have another "project" to work on, so I'll get my exercise in!

Thanks guys. I'm in a position at work where I have to "be there" for everybody else, and try to seem upbeat when I feel anything but.....it adds stress, but I know that this too shall pass. The job market here (as pretty much everywhere unfortunately) is not good, but I'm trying not to focus on that. There are lots of good reasons to get off my duff and stop letting my food choices be mindless....and I'm really gong to work at getting back on track this week. Once I get going, I'm great. Now....to just find that shove to get started again.

I really appreciate the words of encouragement more than you know!

Hi Sharon!

Don't beat yourself up!!! I know just how soul-sucking, energy-sapping and generally horrible our jobs can be! And of course what is going on in your work life can affect your "real" life. It's all well and good to say "no excuses" but sometimes, like Heidi says, it is a very real fact that life gets in the way. And if your work situation is rough (which it seems yours is) there's even more pitfalls waiting to trip you up.

We all make mistakes (shall we talk about the box of Valentine's chocolates I bought "for my husband"?) and lose motivation (shall we talk about the almost complete near-inactivity of my life since November of last year, up until I started SparkPeople???)

But tomorrow is a new day. Give yourself a minute to catch your breath. Maybe there's something you could do this weekend to make next week more pleasant or easier -- get some new songs/an audiobook for your ipod for your work walks, make your lunch in advance so you don't have to do it in the mornings...something. Or, if you have the time, maybe take a long leisurely walk -- I like to have a destinaton; there's an antique swapmeet near us; I don't have any $$$ to buy anything new, but I love walking around there, and it's BIG, so I get some serious steps in.

You. Are. Awesome. You are getting by as best you can in what sounds like a tough situation, and just the fact that you are admitting a struggle and asking for help is AWESOME. Asking for help or admitting to (and being OK with) slipups is something I have SUCH a hard time with. Part of what I've been doing "this time around" (at Spark; I've been on WW or some weight loss plan since I was like 20; I'm 44 now) is really forcing myself to give myself a break when I'm not as diligent as I want to be.

I've realized I HAVE to look at each day as a new one -- if I tried to "make up" all of the caloric and inactivity atrocities I've perpetuated on myself, I'd be running full speed with no food from now to kingdom come!!! :)

I'm sending you big good thoughts for next week and beyond!

Joanie

Hi Sharon!

Okay... seriously? I mean, you found out months ago that you would have a choice to move or be let go... and now it is happening. That is some serious stress. Give yourself a little break! And then, hopefully, next week will be full of little opportunities to get in some activity. You can do it. Sometimes, though, life gets in the way. It isn't an excuse - just a reason to do it next week!

We're all in this together!

Cheers,
Heidi

Morning, all!

Well, every team has a slacker, and I can see that I'm the one for this team. You guys are doing amazing! I, on the other hand, have let things going on in my job affect my commitment to working out and eating better....and it showed on the scale this morning, as well as my having to 'fess up' that most days this week I did NOT do my extra 10 minutes. In fact some days I didn't really do anything worthy of tracking!

Next week will hopefully be better as things start to settle down at work and I won't be so mentally exhausted. I know that exercise at times like this is a huge benefit, but even so, some days I just can't get moving!

Anyway....I continued to try to get more walking in at work during the day....a challenge at a desk job like mine, but I managed most days. I did the 10-minute daily spark video only twice, (in fact, I'm repeating last week because I just didn't do it enough to say I did) and Sunday and Monday were the only days I did my "daily" fitness DVD. Sad, sad, sad....but onward to another week!

Woooooohooooooo!

Wow!

Laurie and Joanie! You two are certainly going above and beyond that 10 mintues! That is awesome! I've been out of town for a few days and am wowed at all the great exercise!

Joanie... have an awesome vacation! Great job planning in some exercise before you leave. That will certainly be a good thing with all that tempting food around! Great job of getting in so much exercise. The office walks sound great, as well as getting in tons of steps otherwise. 20 wall pushups is a great start! Way to go! I am, of course, impressed with all your cooking. My sweetie is the good cook in our house, lol, but at least I've gotten him to use less butter - subbing in Olive Oil a lot more than he used to. Awesome post. I love your enthusiasm! I can just picture you nearly bouncing as you type... that extra energy is shining through!

Laurie... you're going to be a buff woman! Sweet! Not that it was necessarily fun to flat stack lumber for two hours... but what a workout! And then more tiles! 16,812! That is incredible!!! Yeah... the snickers was probably necessary at that point. Way to go! You are doing so great and making the most out of your job. Woohoo! You're really racking up the steps and fitness minutes!

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!

Cheers,
Heidi
P.S. I'll edit my post below with my workout minutes for the week.

Joanie, I for one loved reading your post! You're making such progress on so many fronts! Isn't it exciting! As for Home Depot (or THD, as I usually abbreviate it), I only started working there on November 2nd. Before that I had a job like yours, a sit-on-my-fanny-40-hours-a-week job. Spark was my lifesaver and helped me begin to turn around my lifestyle, and begin, ever so slowly, to lose some of the 50 or 60 pounds I had put on since DH and I moved in together, only back in 2006. It's wonderful knowing I'm not just a fluke, other sedentary folks are finding success with Spark too. And I'm so glad you're enjoying the challenge - don't hesitate to ask if anything gets sticky - so far it sounds like you're doing great!

I had another "workout" day at the store today - scheduled for a full 8 in the lumber department, of all things! And worse, the fellow who is usually in lumber was over in plumbing! I ask you, does this make any sense? Anyway, I spent about two hours flat-stacking lumber (2x6s certainly get heavy at the end of two hours!) Anytime I had a customer who needed lumber cut, I had to call for Eric, or Jeff in millwork, or Willie, or anybody who is certified on the saws! Then after dinner, it got really slow, so I asked the manager on duty, Adam (who has finally, after nearly four months, learned my name! He told another manager one day that he thought my name was Mary. LOL!) Anyway, I asked him if it stayed quiet could I go to the training room and work on my nursery certification for garden department. He said instead that he needed my help in receiving, unpacking a shipment that had just arrived and getting some of it on the shelves, so the overnight crew wouldn't be overwhelmed. I emptied nearly three racks of boxes, for flooring (yeah, the heavy tiles again!), hardware, and plumbing. Everything but lumber! All told I can't even tell you how many times I circled the store, but the grand total was - may I have drum roll, please -

16,812 steps! And I KNOW I reset the pedometer before going to work today, because I wrote down yesterday's 1,515 steps in my log book. I will confess to having a Snickers bar at my break, but I think I earned it! I needed the boost, that's for sure!

I'm afraid I've lost track of where I was in this week's postings, but I certainly think I managed an "extra" ten minutes today!

Laurie

Hi all! SO excited for the weekend, especially because I just found out I've got Monday off!!! Even better, I'm taking a vacation Thursday and Friday, so turns out I'm only working two days next week, awesome!

I have to come up with a concrete plan for the vacay though; we're going to Vegas, and with all the booze and food I want to at least keep up with my exercise. We're going to be staying at a hotel we've never stayed at before, though (The Cosmopolitan) so I'm sure we'll do a lot of exploring, and I'm going to suggest to the hubs that we do a "Strip Walk"...he'll probably be less than excited once he finds out that doesn't mean what he thinks it means!!!)...up and down the Strip is 4.2 miles, and it's not hot there yet, so that should be fun. I'd be worried about the fact that the offer came with $150 in dining credit, except food's so expensive in Vegas we'll probably get like a crostini and a meatball for that!

Here's my stuff for the week; I'm feeling like the pace is going well (sustainable, buildable) and I have SO much more energy...Laurie, I envy you a job where you are active at work -- my job is completely sedentary...I'm so glad joining Spark (and this team) has helped motivate me to get off my arse -- it's not that I COULDN'T take a walk at lunch, it's just that I DIDN'T! :)

2/13: LOTS of housework (it was sunny so I could see all the dust dust dust!!!) And because DH and I couldn't do Valentine's together (he has class and I'm working) we went for a bikeride down to the beach and had a glass of champagne while watching the sunset -- who cares it was Feb 13th? :)
2/14: Two office walks and 100 standing side crunches. And I bought a pedometer! Did one mile on my pedometer, though I'd done some walking before I got it.
2/15: 100 hip flexor exercises and 5161 steps
2/16: 100 squats and 5,611 steps on my pedometer (well, my pedometer app -- my actual pedometer stopped working today BUT I found an app for my phone that works even better! 99 cents vs $25!). I'm going to do 5000 steps a day from now on (which I can easily do) and work up to 10000/day.
2/17: 100 calf raises with chair, 5061 steps!
2/18: 20 wall pushups so far, am trying for 100. 1028 steps so far.
2/19: Am going to try for 10000 steps each day this weekend (including the holiday)

Oh and Laurie, yes, I'm totally digging the healthy cooking challenge! I've been learning to cook for a while now (if you read my blog you'll see I'm not very good but getting better!) and I'm giving myself the challenge to: use every ingredient in my CSA box, try at least one new recipe a week, and "healthify" things I already cook. I've always cooked in a fairly healthy manner -- I've got lots of nonstick pans and cooking spray is a staple at our house -- but there were things I'd never tried, like using applesauce in baked goods (did that with some Trader Joe's muffins and they turned out great!). Plus, just being part of the challenge has made me more diligent about meal planning and grocery shopping.

I've found something interesting about my journey here as regards cooking...I've been trying to eat all "real foods" (rather than like low-cal stuff) to see if I could actually lose weight like that, and you know, it's kind of working! I mean, I still use some "diet-y" things; I have a reduced-fat cheese I love (Trader Joe's reduced-fat Celtic Cheddar -- it actually MELTS!), reduced-fat mayo (that stuff made with olive oil -- it's really good), and, as I said, the cooking spray, but mostly real foods -- meats, veggies, whole-grain breads, other whole grains, olive oil and even a little butter! It's like, I've been dieting for so long (let's call a spade a spade, what I've been doing was dieting, not following a healthy lifestyle) where I was always looking for the lowest-point foods and eating diet this and reduced-fat that...it's like I'm a baby learning how to eat real foods in a reasonable way! It's kind of cool. Like, I've been getting this fantastic bread from the farmer's market. Now, if I used Oroweat Sandwich thins for my lunch with my Spinach Hummus, I could make a sandwich. But if I use the Farmer's Market bread, two slices of it is almost three ounces; three times as much! So, I bring a slice and a half, toast it, and spread the hummus on it open-face. What's huge about that for me is that I can see to the future where, once I've lost the weight I want to lose, I can just have the two pieces of bread. Like, maintaining my weight will be the same as losing my weight, I just get a bit more of the food I already eat!

Yikes, I didn't mean for this post to be so long -- I guess that last bit belongs on the Cooking challenge site -- I guess I just got on a roll! (Can I just repost that part there?)

Anyhoo, I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend (Oh, Laurie, I just realized: long weekend + Home Depot = hell for you! I hope it's not too exhausting!!!)

Yeah, Heidi, I love that I get paid to do a lot of things I like! Like sitting at the computer learning new stuff, like chatting up the customers without getting glared at, and yes, like getting in my steps and strength training while I'm on the clock! LOL!

Joanie, I noticed you are doing the Healthy Cooking Challenge. I hope you're enjoying it!

2/13: 8 hours in flooring, including lifting those heavy tiles and the over 8600 steps I got in.
2/14: 4 hours in lighting, 4,294 steps, climbing the ladders and helping the department head get a display ceiling fan down for a customer. Came home and got the grip bar put into the shower.
2/15: Worked my sit-down job, did squats every bathroom trip, and multiple computer crunches.

Hello everyone!

Here's my tracking for the week so far:

2/13: Got in extra walking minutes with my sweetie :)
2/14: about an hour's worth of walking in Basel (not my usual walk, but plenty)
2/15: nothing extra - but usual walk
2/16: 75 minute hike (pulling my wheeled suitcase - a good bit of it was uphill)
2/17: about 25 minutes walking total - in Stuttgart
2/18: about 50 minutes walking total - not usual walk, but equivalent.
2/19: who knows. Skiing was more about the wine and cheese. Since we got up too late to get the bus, we walked - about 20 minutes carrying gear. And then, we found a bench to have wine and cheese on the ski hill - followed by a bit of a hike back out to the trail. Probably nearly an hour's worth of exercise, but low effort.

I haven't had a stellar week for extra exercise, but at least I've done a little something each day.

Cheers,
Heidi

Hi and Happy Valentine's Day!

Thanks as ever for the encouragement Heidi! And Sharon, thanks for the video workout recommendations; I was at Target today but couldn't find any of those; I'm going to go on Amazon and see...I don't have any recommendations for you; what I used to do was a Playstation thing called Kinetic which involved the EyeToy camera -- it sensed your motion and you got to watch yourself interact with stuff on the screen. It was totally cool, but it doesn't work in our new house's TV setup (though...we've been in this house for 3 years now so that tells you how long it's been since I've done a serious cardio workout, sigh...:))

Anyway, until I get a video, I'll continue doing what I'm doing; my week so far:

2/13: LOTS of housework (it was sunny so I could see all the dust dust dust!!!) And because DH and I couldn't do Valentine's together (he has class and I'm working) we went for a bikeride down to the beach and had a glass of champagne while watching the sunset -- who cares it was Feb 13th? :)
2/14: Two office walks and working on my exercise challenge. And I bought a pedometer!

Thanks for the energy, Heidi, I'm going to need it!

Today I was scheduled in the flooring department. Mostly that means I get to straighten the aisle with all the ceramic and natural stone tiles. Do you know those suckers get HEAVY? LOL! My arms were already screaming at me for all the over-my-head work yesterday and now this? They are not happy with me tonight. Nor are my feet. Last check I had over 8600 steps in for the day. I must be building some muscles, at the very least! LOL!

Have a Marvelous Monday, Teammates!

Awesome everyone!

Joanie - sounds like you had fun, even if Disneyland was crowded. And great job of getting in all that awesome exercise at work! That is awesome! How fun to get in your "walking date" with your hubby that included dinner! That sounds like fun! And way to go using your food resources. I am impressed. I'm totally not a cook, lol. Paintint and weeding... lots of good exercise there! You're welcome, by the way! :) And feel free to post sagas... love to read them!

Sharon - Glad you're getting in some good activity... you and me both on the food front, lol. Way to go for doing a sp 10 minute video every day! And doing other workout videos on top... excellent!!! Thanks for telling us which ones you use. You'll have to update us on how you liked the SP 10 minute ones.

Laurie - read the blog - awesome! I have cheated and just posted my post here as a blog, lol... two birds! It sounds like you've got a long haul ahead of you with no days off in the next couple of weeks. I'm sending you energy!

Great job everyone! Keep getting in those little extras!!!

Cheers,
Heidi

Hey Joannie, My favorite DVD's are the old reliables: Richard Simmons Sweatin' to the Oldies (I have 1-3) and Leslie Sansome's Walk Away the Pounds series. I have two of those. I've been meaning to look for "Flirty Girl" and one by Valerie Bertanelli, both of which a couple of my friends swear by. How about you? Do you have any new ideas for fitness videos for me?

Friday: Didn't do everything I wanted to do yesterday but it worked out OK...did one office walk and my daily challenge exercise (100 oblique crunches) but I didn't get a lunchtime walk in nor did I get a pedometer. BUT, when I got home, DH and I walked to dinner, and the first place was closed, so we went to the second, which was further away. We ended up walking for a total of about an hour, so more than my daily goal of 20 minutes! Plus, we had pho for dinner (Vietnamese noodle soup) which was deeeelicious and super-healthy!

Today the plan is to cook up a storm (chicken stew using this bitchen -- if I dew say sew meself -- stock I made last weekend from the carcasses of three preroasted birds I'd frozen), and make some spinach hummus. I'm also going to try kale chips which several people have given me recipes for. I have a whole fridge and freezer full of ingredients and I can't wait to turn it into FOOD!!!

In addition to the standing and stirring, I plan to paint our french doors and clean out one of my raised beds to prep for planting soon (don't hate me but it's 73 degrees and sunny here!). Surely all of this will amount to some calories burned! I really want to go on another walk with my hubby this evening too; it was so nice last night. We'll see, The Hubs was hinting at getting in the hot tub, and I DO have a crick in my neck...maybe we'll do a few water aerobics! :)

Hey MTNTWNS, what are your favorite exercise videos? I'm thinking I might want to try that. And kudos to doing 'em three times a week -- that sounds great! Along with the 10 min videos daily, you're rockin!

Hey Heidi, thanks again for the pos comments on my blog AND for starting this team!

Oh my gosh my post is so long!! Sorry for the saga -- I'll try to keep it shorter next time!!!

Sunday and Monday I was bad with eating. Exercise was pretty good though.

I did a SP 10 minute video every day starting Tuesday, and I continued my extra walking at work most days....except not so much Friday. I did shop after work though, so made sure I was using the stairs and not the escalator at the mall. I did eat out too though, so probably cancelled out my walking.

Also did a WATP or Richard Simmons DVD 3 times this week. I'm aiming for 7, but at least it's a start!

2/6: Went to Disneyland -- Superbowl Sunday is supposed to be the least crowded day -- NOT!!! :) Still, had a great time with hubby and my best friend and walked all around both parks for hours.
2/7: 40-somethings daily fitness challenge: 100 squats, two "office walks" and a 20-minute walk at lunch.
2/8:40-somethings daily fitness challenge: 100 wall pushups (20 down!) and am going to take a 20 minute walk after lunch. Also did my "office walk" once today and will do it again before EOD.
2/10: Bleargh...didn't do much yesterday. Did my 20-min walk (barely) but nuttin' extra. I attribute it to too early of a morning and stress at work -- WHICH exercise would've helped with, but I seemed to have been glued to my chair!!!
2/11: Plan to walk to the grocery store at lunch, then go to Target to get a pedometer. I'm also going to call my hubby and see if he wants to go on a "walking date" with me tonight. :)

Oops...got my days mixed up; guess that's what I get for getting behind in my tracking!

Here's the corrected version:
2/5: Spent the morning cleaning the house (MUST get Roomba fixed!!!) for friend's visit, and then when she cancelled, spent the afternoon cooking; made a batch of ketchup and a batch of chicken stock. Not exactly cardio, but I was on my feet most of the day.

Hi all!

Here's my tracking for the week so far!

2/6: 45 minutes skiing, plus extended walk, plus 500 meters swim!
2/7: extended walk (10 extra minutes)
2/8: Nothing extra, but got in my normal walk.
2/9: only walking between trains... maybe 5 minutes?
2/10: 2 hours overall - time in the hotel gym, plus lots of walking
2/11: 70 min cardio, plus about 36 minutes walking.
2/12: 60 minutes of xbox (didn't walk, but that's okay)

Cheers,
Heidi

In an effort to make this easier and less complicated to track, I'm going to make this the place to track. I'll put up a template (feel free to use it or whatever system you like), and you can just stop by when you want to add to your tracking.

For example:

2/6: skiing!
2/7: extended walk (10 extra minutes)
2/8: parked car further away!
2/9:
2/10:
2/11:
2/12:

or:

2/6: Extra 10 minutes met!
2/7: Extra 10 minutes met!
2/8: Nothing today, but tomorrow awaits!
2/9:
2/10:
2/11:
2/12:

Basically, you can make it as detailed or as simple as you want. Then, each time you come back, you can simply 'edit' your own post - thereby updating it with any new information.

Good luck for the rest of this week!

Cheers,
Heidi
