I love my quinoa - I have to remember to rinse it, though, because if I don't it has a bitter taste. I'll have to read up on the quinoa "fears". The bitterness may be from what some are referring to as 'poisonous'. Thanks, Pat

I'm sure you are right about this, Will. I guess I was going by the area I live in (very "back woods" in some ways). Specialty foods seem very slow about filtering into our local life. If you ask most folks what quinoa is around here, they would say, "King who? Keen what?" LOL!

Thanks for all the info. I guess it's always a good idea to start small with something new, but I just don't ever think of that!

Incindentally, I get awfully ill sometimes when I eat Tempeh. I think it's when I wash it well that I don't get sick. At home, it doesnt' bother me because I wash it. It just upsets my stomach when I eat it out. Needless to say, I no longer eat Tempeh out anymore.

The first time I had quinoa, I got stomach cramps. Then I found out that it is naturally coated with a toxin called saponin. The word was to rinse it, and you would be fine. I then bought some quinoa that said it was pre-rinsed. I rinsed it anyway I still got stomach cramps. I will not be having quinoa again.

But it's not only vegans that eat quinoa. Lots of people eat it, either because they have heard it is a superfood, or because it is interesting and exotic, or because they are eating gluten-free, or just because they like it.

Thanks for this info. I never heard of anyone being allergic to it. Good to know.

To answer your question about why she may have eaten it since she's not a vegan, it's because many non vegans eat quinoa. It's delicious and goes with many things. Years before I began following a plant-based diet, I ate quinoa. It's a great companion to many meals.

I was about ready to get off the computer this morning when I saw the post about berry dangers, and it reminded me of what one of my sisters had told me about yesterday.

She had bought some Quinoa...cooked and ate it (I've yet to find out why, since she's not a vegan) and she became very ill--swollen face, broken out patches on her skin and was sick for a solid week! Turns out a few rare souls are allergic to it and she happened to be one of them. (I've eaten it and never had a problem.)

So I thought I should pass this information along, just in case anyone has not tried it yet. You might want to begin with a very small amount, just in case (if that helps...I don't know). But like I said, this is a very rare allergy. Not common. And it had nothing to do with the cleanliness of the product...she was just allergic.

I also thought it might be good to know for those who have children, since kids might have a more severe reaction if they were allergic. (Wow--so many things to make us paranoid, huh? LOL! But like others were saying in the other post: we can only do the best we can...no guarantees in life...but it's best to know of these things and take a few precautions, rather than not know.)
