Rheyn - I've been to Disney World twice as a vegan. They really do take care of you and you eat like a king. Everything was so super good. My family was a bit jealous and even commented that they should have said they were vegan.

We have one trip planned: a Disney cruise to Alaska for my parents' 40th anniversary/Mom's retirement celebration. When my folks made the reservation for the whole family, they requested vegan dinner service (you get what you pay for with a world-class company like Disney -- they are so good about being able to accommodate dietary needs in an enjoyable, elevated way) for Dave and me, and I have already checked out sample menus for breakfast and lunch restaurants, and there are lots of good options.

That being said, our on-the-road dining experiences have not always been that easy (the WORST, as Rosalie has already heard, was a late-night dinner at Applebee's), so these are good tips. We usually travel with the same kinds of goodies Kelly does, and have also been known to cook on the engine on road trips.

Your trips sound like a lot of fun, Kelly! I love a road trip! Reminds me of when I was a kid and dad would bring food for our weekend trips in a cooler and we would stop and have a picnic if we spotted a picnic table somewhere...or sometimes the car hood would be our table! Ha! Good memories!

Some good tips and ideas you shared there for a road trip, too!

We take quite a few overnight trips in the summer. I always take my breakfast and snacks. It helps out a lot. We stay at hotels that have free breakfast but usually don't have much for a vegan but the husband loves the waffles. So I make my own oatmeal packets, bring a vega protein powder, my shaker bottle, and a bowl with a lid. Our rooms always have a fridge so I make overnight oats. No need to boiling water or using the nuke box. I shake up the protein mix with water, add my oatmeal packet (oats, raisins, chia seeds and cinnamon) mix it up, cover and put in the fridge overnight. Presto you have breakfast when you wake up.

I've been known to bring my own rice bowls as well. We typically have a cooler on the bike with us so I can bring some things that need refrigeration. Otherwise I bring Larabars or homemade bars to supplement that veggie sub lunch or the very small salads I end up getting.

I always check the area ahead of time to see if there are any restaurants or if I'm on my own. Grocery stores, farm stands and even some gas stations can have items. I always grab bananas from the gas station for a snack.

There are even individual nut butter packets that you can bring. I don't remember the brand but they are helpful as well. Sabra now has individual hummus packets so those are very easy to transport.

IM, you got some great ideas, there! (I especailly like the idea of using hummus to make a subway veggie sub more complete!)

But will whole oats actually cook with just boiling water, IM? I thought they would be too "tough"? Did you maybe mean quick cook oats? If whole oats work, I'd definitly prefer using them.

My parents buy the packaged storebought oatmeal packets and I keep telling them that they are not that healthy. I will have to tell them about your idea!

Great tips IMVEGAN. I carry a small cooler on the passenger seat too and fill it with fruit and water and Vega bars. Like Rosalie, I like to stop at markets along the way to replenish my stash.

I never take instant oatmeal packets because they are full of additives and so easy to make for myself using only whole food ingredients... I just grab a zipper bag, toss in a serving of whole oats and then my favorite add in's.... that way I am sure it is healthy and it is MUCH less expensive too. When I get to where I am going I mix it with boiling water and stir and it is ready to eat!

I also take pre-made homemade veggie burgers (I love PPK.com's beet burgers) with me in a cooler. They can be eaten at room temperature or most gas stations have microwaves that I can toss them in for a minute to warm them up. I carry hummus with me to put on SUBWAY's veggie sub to make it a complete meal too.

Thanks, Boni, I've been wanting to learn more about staying vegan on the road. I'm not planning a trip anytime soon, but I want to learn more about what to bring with me if I get out for a few hours from home, or a whole day away.

I was gone from home all day yesterday with my brother in law and my sister, and if they get hungry on the road they always seem to have protein bars handy...but I knew I could do better if I knew better (opps! I'm quoting Oprah! Ha!) So this article will help me there! Thanks!

Thanks! Always looking for good ideas for eating on the go.

Love the idea of carrying instant oatmeal packages! They're going to be in my kit from now on! Why didn't I think of that?

I find that shopping at grocery stores instead of fast food restaurants makes for a nice healthy break on the road. You can get a lot of stuff just in the produce department and often the deli will have baked potatoes and there's the salad bar and other vegan fare.

Plus, it's nice to get out and stretch your legs.

Christa, the "Nutritionist in the Kitch" has posted an informative blog on how vegans can pack to travel. I tend to pack more simply but she has some good ideas. www.nutritionistinthekitch.com/2013/
