As an adjunct, Runner's World published this morning a great "What to Wear" for the weather. You fill in the conditions and it prints out what to put on. I kept notes for an entire year on what to wear for the conditions. This link does it for you. I know you are supposed to dress 10 degrees F cooler than the conditions because you will get warmer as you go. www.whattoweartool.com/?gender=f&tem

Light is what I'm looking for, as well. I don't feel very agile in my current shoes. More clunky & clumsy. Thanks for the info!

Some people think the “plant-based whole foods diet” is extreme. Half a million a year will have their chests opened up and a vein taken from their leg and sewn onto their coronary artery. Some people would call that extreme.

I have pronated feet and use orthotics. I found that without orthotics, I couldn't get past 6km of run/walking without it killing my feet. Now I can go for half marathons no problem. I like New Balance and right now am wearing Asics GT2160's. Need a new pair. I have also worn Mizuno's which are nice and light.

Boni - I'm curious what brand shoes you train in. I know it's different for everyone, but I wouldn't mind some guidance / opinions.

I used to be able to do just under a 9-minute kilometer. Now I average between 11 and 12 minutes. I am not an expert but I know wha works for me. That advice (go slow and for distance) is good for the long runs/walks which you do once a week. Take it easy. Go for distance, not speed. On the short walks/runs, I would go for a personal best once in a while. Another training tool that helps increase your speed is fartleks. Go slow, then faster, then flatout for a minute and then back to slow. I let my body tell me when to pick up the pace. I don't use a watch. Hill work also helps with endurance. When I'm training, although you are told to do hills once a week, I switch that up a bit and every day ( I go out five times a week) when I come to a hill, I pick up the pace and go up it as fast as I can. Be careful though. Listen to your body. I have a Type A+ friend who constantly pushed herself and she wrecked her knee. So not worth it just to be able to say you went faster.

Thanks for the link. emoticon

I read Eat and Run by Scott Jurek and I've sort of been following his advice as I've begun jogging this Spring. He says to go as long as possible as slow as you need to go.

What do you think of that advice? I've tried the Sparkpeople plan before. It worked, but I didn't need to go that slowly.

I know we've posted this link before, but for those of you who are new to VF&N, Jeff Galloway has some great training programs for 5k, 10k, half marathons and marathons. It's that time of year when we need to lace those runners back on and get outdoors and burn calories. www.jeffgalloway.com/ Spark has great training programs as well, check them out. I remember my frst 5k class. We walked 2k. I thought I was going to die from exhaustion. I had thought that I was in good shape up until that point. Huh. If you can join a group, it is a great motivator to stay on track - keeping up with the group - Spark has a Team that will motivate you as well if you don't live near a store that runs training sessions.
