I've been trying to remember to use the **shake your hands 12x and wipe them on one folded paper towel method** lately to dry my hands in public restrooms -- it really does work!, only one paper towel needed. I forgot this morning, though -- just grabbed for the towel, then backtracked and did it afterwards. It's not quite a habit yet. :~)

You probably all know about this, but if you have lemon wedges that are ready to be tossed you can grind them up in you garbage disposal to freshen it up... although I find when I put in a lemon half it's too much and bits of the rind get stuck.

We used fresh aloe when I was a kid, too. My mom picked up the habit from her dad, a Chinese immigrant who always preferred natural, herbal, and traditional remedies to pharmaceutical ones.

It's odd the things that stick with you. One of my favorite memories from many years ago was when I burned my hand - probably in the kitchen, I can't remember - and my friend had an aloe plant. At his direction I cut a leaf and applied it directly to my burn for instant relief. It felt so... organic, I guess. Very "One with Nature," you know? So simple, and natural, and yet miraculous. Until then I hadn't known that was possible. Hmm.. sounds like there may be an aloe plant in my future!

Boni, Thanks so much for the poison ivy remedies. They look great. I seem to be immune to poison ivy, but am pretty sure those remedies would be great for other skin problems, too. :~)

emoticon EARTH DAY CONTEST! emoticon

Vegan Zombie has an earth day contest going on for anyone interested. You can win several earth friendly cleaning products. (It involves making a short video of what you do to make this earth a cleaner place...since I don't have a camera, I probably won't be entering...but that doesn't mean you can't! )

Here's his 2 minute video for anyone interested: www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPx2BQr2xV8&

My advice - stay out of the stuff - it is sheer misery dealing with it. But her suggestion of growing an aloe vera plant makes sense.

Welcome home, Veggie Beth!

I lived in Phoenix for a month once with one of my younger sisters, and sometimes miss being there. It was a facinating place. Wanted to make it down to Tucson, but never did.

Glad to have ya back! This a pretty active group, with lots of great info!

I am just jumping in with both feet on the threads. I have been a member here for a long time but left SP due to some major life changes.

Happy Earth Day Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today I will be working the earth. I have more of my garden to prepare for the summer produce, which needs to be planted the first of May. I planted my cool weather veggies last weekend. We had a long winter (thank goodness I spent part of it in Tucson) and so nice to get outside and garden.

Enjoy your day emoticon

Great tip! We've gotten some great "fire sale" deals on far-mar produce, too. Probably the most exciting was TWO flats of grape tomatoes for $3. The following week was one of the happiest of my life, lol.

Thanks, Boni. I'll have to look at that article later; it looks good.

Here's how I save money on veggies (and it just happened this way, I didn't plan it.) I'm in Hawaii so we have farmers' markets all year long. One of them is inside the mall a few miles from where I live on Wednesday afternoons and evenings. I go after work to buy veggies for the week. I usually can't get there before 6pm and they shut down at 7pm. There are two farmers there who say "oh take this, too" or "you like these, here put these in your bag" because they are about to break down and don't want to carry all the leftovers home. Especially with the cut greens, they would just go to waste if they don't give them away, but local bananas have a short window, too (big bunches will all ripen at the same moment.) I feel bad sometimes (they have to make a living!) but they usually won't let me pay for the extras. They've even apologized for loading me up (but I don't mind!) If you are on a super strict budget, try that sometime and see what happens.

Speaking of gardening, I came across an interesting article in the current issue of Natural Awakenings about chemicals in gardening -tools-. I was reading the print version at our office, but found it on the website to share:

"Or I could just not clean. That's green too, lol!"

Oh, I like that idea, Carissa! LOL!

As a guy, housecleaning just isn't where I'm gifted! Ha! I struggle with it. For instance, I've just learned a friend may be coming over tomorrow, so I'm gonna be cleaning like crazy to try to get this mess in shape! Ha! That's how I do...last minute cleaning. I'm not a total slob, but I just can find a million other things I'd rather do than clean house!!! Ha! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon ...you name it! Anything but clean house!

( I LOVE that poem, "Dust if you Must"! Anyone ever read that?)

So yeah...I vote for going green by NOT cleaning! Ha! (Well, in my dreams I do, anyway!)

The link below looks like it's got some helpful info. I briefly read the ingredients on the tabs in the "Share Homemade Green Cleaning Recipes" section. I'm hoping the website isn't too extreme (we've all seen them) - if so, I apologize in advance. I'm going to try some of these safer, less expensive cleaning ideas.

I think I will try the vinegar and baking soda at least. That is a small step in the right direction. I didn't start bringing my lunch every day overnight, but got there eventually. Cleaning green could be a new goal.

Or I could just not clean. That's green too, lol! emoticon

thank you to everyone on this post thread that has inspired me to pay close attention to how I can improve my "carbon footprint" here on Earth. I bought a red oak tree over the weekend and my husband just planted it yesterday. I love oaks and our property needed another tree. Great time of year to do it. Definitely using less paper towels emoticon and will be re-thinking my cleaning supplies.

White vinegar and baking soda make a powerful cleaning combo. You'll get some good foaming action, too. For the toilet bowl, I put in white vinegar and let it sit, then just before using the scrubby brush I add some baking soda and scrub as it foams. For copper bottomed pans, you can brighten them up with salt and white vinegar (or you can use some old ketchup.) That and a little elbow grease will get you great results.

Carissa - I hear ya! I do a lot of things that are responsible to help the Earth but I am very guilty of not using "green" cleaning products. I am going to try some home made cleaning ideas - like in the link offered here - but sometimes I just use white vinegar and water to clean the bathroom/kitchen floor.

I can be a "germ-a-phoebe", however, and like to use an antibacterial cleaner on my bathroom floor. Diluted bleach has caused trauma to my clothing in the past (my being careless was the main ingredient in that equation). I'll have to do some research online and see what else I can find. Pat

Cleaning is the hardest way for me to be green. I bring my lunch (in Tupperware, not plastic wrap), reuse bags, recycle, do ALL that stuff, but when it comes to cleaning I just hate it so much that the thought of even a little extra work to be greener makes me cringe. Ever New Year I make resolutions and ever Earth Day I feel guilty, but this is one habit this little Earth lovin' vegan can't shake! :-( Also, yes - what is this power that paper towels hold over us?

I think it's worth a try with just the peels, since the idea is basically a solvent-extraction of the essential oils (which are found only in the peel.) Commercially, citrus EOs are extracted mechanically, but just soaking the peels would be adequate for home use since the EOs don't need to be collected separately.

Hmm, not sure this would work for me. They say "squeeze the juice" out of the citrus fruits & put the remainder in the jar. That means the fruit itself is in the jar, not just the peels. When I eat citrus, the only thing that remains is the peel! So I'd probably not be providing enough of the citrus necessary to make a good cleaning product. But it sounds like it would work if you do just squeeze the juice out of your fruits.

I just read about this citrus cleaner that I thought that I would try. Simply put all your used orange peels in a jar. When it is filled, top with white vinegar, let sit and use as a cleaner. myhealthygreenfamily.com/blog/wordpr

has anyone tried this? Better than throwing out all those orange peels.

You know, it sounds so simple...........use less paper towels. I truly didn't realize how many paper towels I was using/wasting. I have a stock of tri-fold paper towels at my desk to use when I'm using a juicy apple, pear etc. I'm going to bring some small finger towels I have here at home to the office to use. A few rags as well when I need to clean my desk surface.

Not to beat this subject to death but I didn't really realize this so THANKS again.

Beth, that is a really great video on one of the simpliest ways we can lower our footprint on earth! Thanks for sharing that!

I know it will be hard at first for me, cause I think men are so self concious of what other men think of them when in close quarters like a restroom. After they wash their hands, they would probably feel very foolish shaking the water off their hands for that long (even though it's only seconds more), but I'm gonna try to start doing that. It's one small way I can help. Thanks!

That was a facinating article, Boni, about the guy traveling with nothing but his trust in people. I'm so the opposite of that...like the guy with his bike weighed down with "stuff"! That's me!

Well....that's me when it comes to "travel". But in my own home I'm learning more and more that I need far less than I think. I keep trying to make my home more "spartan". I'm enjoying how my livingroom and bedroom are easier to keep organized because of how I simplified them last summer. (Now to work on the kitchen and storage/weight room one of these days!)

But it would be an adventure to travel with almost nothing and see if folks would help. But I'm such a private guy sometimes...I'd probably starve to death camping right outside someones business who was perfectly willing to help me...had I asked! Ha!

I do all the things on Kelly's list except car-pooling / public transportation. Not feasible where I live. Also:
I buy Green Forest paper towels (& TP) because they're made from recycled materials instead of trees being chopped down to make them.
I buy organic, which is better for the environment.
And I try to mostly clean with vinegar instead of other household cleaners.

I've been carrying my own shopping bags for several years now. Up here in Canada, in many stores you are charged for the plastic ones. I have quite a collection. The store-bought ones do deteriorate after a while and many don't hold up to being washed in a washing machine. I have a friend who makes them and they are great.
I love my sham wow cloths. They are great for picking up liquid spills, washing the kitchen and bathroom floors and for washing the RAV4. Any job involving a lot of water. I got them at a country fair. I cut them up into managable pieces.

I use the torn up rags just for really messy things where you want to throw the whole thing out...otherwise regular dish towels and other scrubby things. I have lots of bags I keep in the back hatch of my car and a couple that roll up very small that I can slip into my purse. Yes, sometimes they are right there and I forget to take them into the store with me. At the farmers' market I have to be adamant that I don't want bags, I've got my own. They all want to give me bags! It's almost a joke between me and the vendors at the different farm tables I go to. They say "oh yeah, that's right" but it's so engrained they are still reaching for the bag as they say it. One guy always slips stuff in a bag anyway (so that I won't get my cloth bags messy!!) I take clean plastic store bags to a local thrift store so they can use them. Better for them to get used again before going to a recycle tub at the store, because like SWT says, who knows if they really follow through.

Never used the Sham Wow towel. One of my sons uses it and likes it; never asked about how long it takes to dry though. I do use and recycle the plastic grocery bags. I am skeptical if the stores actually do the right/moral thing with them. I have a few permanent grocery bags and, unfortunately, forget to take them into stores with me! I'll have to work on that.

Has anyone else had any success with that "Sham Wow" towel? It was a great idea--to replace paper towels with it--but it seemed to hold moisture "too" well, and dry very slowly (best I recall). And once washed, it never did as well afterwards.

Today I looked at some earth friendly shopping bags to start using--but then forgot about them and left the store without them! Duh! But none of them looked very strong, except for one kind that had a reinforced bottom to it. I do want to start using these, because often when I go to the store I use those single plastic baskets some stores provide...so why not just bring my own bag to carry around "and" carry home?!!!

Thank you, for the great reminder that we need to be responsible in ways other than our food choices. You've given me something to think about. I can honestly I do most of the items you bulleted but I want to plan something else. Thanks again! emoticon emoticon

Every evening after I am done with supper dishes I hang 2 clean dish towels near the sink. That way I am all set for the next day. One is to dry dishes and the other is to dry hands or wipe a water spill. I do have paper towels. I like to use those that you can tear into small sizes to put in packed lunches for a napkin.

I still use paper towels... but am trying to do it less often. I tore up some old sheets, etc. and will grab those for quick wipe ups, too.

I have a bad habit of reaching for paper towels. I use knitted dish cloths for a lot of things and microfibre cloths for dusting, but the paper towel is handy. I do use recycled which I guess helps a bit.

I've done pretty well over the past few years of giving up using paper plates at home (not an easy task for a single guy! Ha!) But I've never been able to give up for long paper towels.

For a while there I tried that "Shamwow", or whatever it was called...that cloth that's supposed to absorb liquid better than paper towels. It handled some jobs very well--others not so well. I kept missing my paper towels, so I always end up going back to them.

What do you folks do? Have you been able to break the paper towel habit?

Kelly: Yes, a good challenge for us all! Thanks!

(My first effort will be buying some reusable shopping bags---something I've been meaning to do for a long time, but just never seemed to get around to it.)

Rheyn: You've got some great ideas, there!

Boni: Great idea for us to link our food to our mood--I'm gonna be more concious of that and see what happens!

I recently went a little nuts purging all environmentally- and animal-UNfriendly beauty, personal care, and cleaning products from our home. Instead of throwing them away, I'm donating unopened items to a shelter/outreach center near us, and saving the cosmetics to do a beauty swap with some girlfriends.

In honor of Earth Day, April 22 how about a little challenge to be more environmentally conscious.

Here are some ideas:
~Carpool, ride your bike, walk or take public transportation
~make your own cleaning products
~unplug unused electric appliances
~turn off the water while you brush
~donate items instead of throwing them away
~stop paper bank statements
~pay bills online
~stop using paper towels, paper plates etc.
~bring your own shopping bags
~reusable water bottles

These are just a few. How can you support a healthy environment? Are there any areas you could work on for April? Let's do this!
