Here's another approach to how to answer when people question what we eat. The link is to a video by Heather Nauta -- she does wonderful vegan cooking videos and right now is traveling with her husband, Phil, in Peru.

As I've aged and acquired Wisdom, I firmly believe this. I agree; it does apply to all areas of our lives. Thank you for your lovely compliment emoticon Pat

I believe in myself, I am a strong woman. I will reach my goals, NOTHING & NOBODY will hold me down. I will live my life with integrity and intention. I will set a good example for my daughters and my son. I will be a woman that makes my grand children proud when they look at pictures of me long after I've left this earth.

I loved what you said about "extreame", Cariss (hmmm...that's not the name you usually go by in the group, is it? I'm terrible at names! LOL!)

I want to remember that and use it if anyone ask me about that "weird cult I'm in called being vegan"!!! LOL!!

Some people think the “plant-based whole foods diet” is extreme. Half a million a year will have their chests opened up and a vein taken from their leg and sewn onto their coronary artery. Some people would call that extreme.

I had to look up Sacher torte, and believe a taste would do me! Looks VERY rich. But I certainly can understand the appeal! And eating in Europe is actually safer than in the US, because most European countries don't allow GMOs, artificial food dyes, etc. In fact Kraft makes a European version of their food (such as mac & cheese) that 's much healthier than the version they market in America. So enjoy your trip, knowing that the ingredients you wouldn't have at home are probably not as bad for you as those same ingedients would be at home. Sad but true!

Also, to ASPIRINGVEGAN,

I get this ALL the time. I'm just like you. I usually say, "If I wanted to eat it, I would." And people eating meat doesn't really bother me. It's their choice. I tell them everyone should eat what makes them happy!

I'm actually going to Austria/Germany and I can promise you I may taste a couple non-vegan foods. I would be unhappy if I didn't have one or two bites of real sacher torte on my vacation. Although, I do draw the line at meat, even on vacation. Will NOT be unhappy passing up real German bratwurst! :-)

Thank you for sharing! I always find it interesting that people think my diet is "extreme." Toast with peanut butter is extreme? Oatmeal? Pasta with marinara? Bean soup? Salad? Tofu? How are these extreme?

Dead animal ground up in a factory and dosed with chemicals is my definition of extreme. I can't believe three years ago I ate that all the time!

Great blog; thanks for sharing the link. I've chosen to not make any announcements about my vegan lifestyle (selling off/donating all animal clothing/pocketbooks as well) and just live by example. So far, I've only had one person make ignorant comments to me and, unfortunately, she's one of the least healthy looking woman I know. When asked why I'm "doing this" (usually accompanied with a look of complete confusion on the inquirers face) I simply say "it's a much healthier diet and I can't ignore the torture of animals any longer". They still look at me confused but I don't care.

We all have to live our lives according to our own souls. Pat

Thanks for the support, Terry. It does get to me every once in a while. Oddly, the same people don't want to hear anything about how I've lost the 12 pounds I gained in the 3 years I worked with them before becoming vegan last Sept. So I just keep my little mouth shut and live my life and enjoy my food. I'm finally eating the way I've wanted to for 15 years or more, so I am HAPPY!

K8, I think you are doing a wonderful job by being a "living example" of the right way to eat! Yeah, I know it can get a bit irritating when folks focus on you, like you're from the local circus side show of vegan eating, but by the same token, you are a living example to them of the right way to eat.

I have come to realize this more and more in the case of my sister (who I believe has some serious weight issues). Many years ago she was an example to me when she was going to Weight Watchers. I "watched" the food she ate and it began to facinate me. I ended up going on the same diet she was on (on my own--using some of the W.W. books she gave me) and lost 20 pounds (I was 25 years younger than I am now, and that was all I needed to lose then).

Jump ahead 25 years, and now both me and my sister are overweight again, but I think she probably is more dangerously overweight at this time. I want to be a better example of how to eat, in hopes she will watch me and come to appretiate what I'm trying to do for my health. Maybe this time I will rub off on her, just like she once rubbed off on me.

By the way, I loved your comment to the coworker who pittied you for not being able to eat the cake. You said, " I can have it, but choose not to." What a great comment!

Oh - And I walked to the restaurant we went to earlier that day for lunch. The rest drove, and I got there exactly when they did.

Ditto, ditto, ditto! And I'm also tired of being the repository of everyone's guilt. I'm just trying to live my life. I don't need to be seen as the Food Police. I never criticize what they're eating, but when I'm around they usually make comments as if I am.

And Friday I joined them in the break room for a co-worker's birthday celebration. They were all eating chocolate-y, moist cake with vanilla ice cream & caramel sauce. I popped open a can of my seltzer water so I could be doing something with my mouth while we celebrated together, but that wasn't good enough. "Oh, I wish you could have some of this!" (pitying) I said, "I can." She, "You can??" Me, "Yes, I just choose not to." (Ok, I'm getting a little annoyed at a spotlight always being turned on me, re food.) Many at the table then chimed in that they wish sometimes they could be so disciplined. I'm SO tired of it! I love eating the way I do, and feeling the way I do, and for them to pity me or think I'M odd just really burns me. I don't choose to eat GMOs or toxins or allergens or artery-cloggers. Yep, that make ME weird!

It really rubs me the wrong way when people say they "could never" do such-and-such. What they really mean is that they "would never" -- in other words don't want to and aren't willing to. Nobody who has ever switched from the Standard American Diet to a plant-based one has some mysterious super power that made it possible. It was opening our eyes the implications of continuing on just the same as ever, learning there was an alternative, making a choice between the two, and working hard to stay committed to that choice (even -- no, ESPECIALLY when we aren't perfect.)

What I "could never" -- WOULD never, DON'T want to, and am NOT willing to -- do is feel bad that I decided to do something different and better for myself and my family, hide it just because it's outside the norm, or go back in order to avoid being ridiculed. There is just too much at stake to care about what other people think.

I used to think the same thing. Unfortunately a lot of people would rather stick with their prescriptions, blood tests and insulin injections every day. I've seen it several times in my own family. I used to be very judgmental towards them but realized it is not worth my energy anymore.

I just watched a documentary called (if I remember right) Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. In it, the film-maker is trying to get healthy from being morbidly obese, and is starting out with a juice fast. At one point, he travels across America interviewing people about how they eat.

So many people were eating gross plates of ribs and mashed potatoes saying how they could never give up the way they eat. Many of them said that they did not expect to live past 55. I wanted to grab them by the shoulders and shake them, and say, "Of COURSE you can change the way you eat. If someone put a gun to your head and said 'Eat a salad,' you would eat a salad."

If someone gave you a choice of having some beautiful, crunchy vegetables every day, or blood tests and insulin injections every day, you would take the vegetables.

Seriously, people. Wake UP!

You must be psychic, Boni! This was just what I needed to read this morning! I woke up with a strong feeling about this (was thinking of the changes I truly need to make in my own life) and then along comes this article you shared! Perfect!

I even copied and saved it into my files for use with any group meetings I might attend or create someday. And I also want to print it out and read it on occasion just as a reminder to me--I think it's that important! Pretty much says it all! So thank you!

Great article! Thanks so much for sharing it.

I don't know what happened to the person on the team but I've come to realize that when people criticize us or put us down it is due to their own insecurity or issues. I'm done letting that kind of guilt and negative energy influence me. when I make a choice I'm now asking myself "does this feel natural". If the answer is yes, then screw anyone that doesn't like it.
