LOL!!! You are so right, Rheyn! It was obvious he did it on purpose, stretching his head around to get a good grip on my hand. He was just being naughty, and he knew it! So he's got a bit too much "wild man" in his blood for me.

Guess I just need to still keep a watch for a small dog to keep in the house for my pet. I dearly love pugs (my sister has two) but they shed so badly. Not that I'm a neat-nick...I'm just not the best at keeping things clean! LOL!!! Hate to add lots of pet hair to the equation! But pugs sure are sweet! They seem to love everyone and those huge eyes look so much like a cartoon! emoticon

Well, my love for "the big yellow cat" is over! Ha!

I knew he was probably on the wild side, even though he would let me rub him a little. And once he bit me slightly (only cat owners can relate to this: sometimes when you rub a cat for a while it becomes over stimulated or something, and it will bite you a little. It's not personal...just a way to say "that's enough!" Cats are so independent that way! I read once that dogs are like toddlers and cats are like teenagers--makes total sence to me!)

Well, yesterday the big yellow cat had only let me just begin to place my hand on his back and then he intentionally reached over and bit me hard (don't worry--it didn't break the skin) and then he took off running like the wind, cause he knew he was being mean!

So no more petting for this cat! He's too much of a wild one. I'll be keeping my distance from him from now on. He's too much of a teenager for me! Ha!

As much as I am an advocate of "indoor kitties" there is something special about the local Tom that comes for a snack and brief petting before venturing off to future adventures. Life wouldn't be the same without them! And now we ARE off topic!

"it is exactly this reason we MUST do our best, but NOT stress when our best isn't perfect"

That's so nice of you to say! And it's the truth that stress sure ain't gonna help us! So all we can do is the best we can do.

By the way, I've had cats too before and went through a ton of kitty litter! No telling how much damage I did to the local land! Ha! In fact, I'd still have a cat now if I hadn't found out I was so allergic to them! (Got attached to cats when I was a kid and my aunt gave me one.)

But there's this big yellow "free and wild" cat that wanders into my yard now and then and visits me, so I sometimes feed him a little snack. He kinda gives me the feeling I have a cat now and then. I keep my eye out for a small dog as a pet, but haven't found anything yet.

That reminds me of a story published a few years ago. A man in a town a couple of hours from here built a windmill to generate energy. Because he was living off the grid and wasn't paying a hydro bill, he got taxed for having it.

As much as I want to live "off grid" it is nearly impossible with the internet and cell phones. Even if I got rid of everything else and figured out how to live off the land I couldn't do without either of those. emoticon

Great points all around. Most days, I have at least a few moments when I want to go completely off the grid and just disappear from civilization as we know it.

GENTLEVIKING I don't think it's a downer post, you are right and it is exactly this reason we MUST do our best, but NOT stress when our best isn't perfect - it can't be! Be proud when you can make a choice and make the right one, but don't put yourself down when the choice isn't there. I try not to think about how may tons of cat litter my little feline friends have contributed to our landfills, for example! Ha! Pretty sure those two are NOT eco-friendly!

Great discussion and some good ideas I plan to look into, too.

But it does get a bit discouraging at times. One thing I've come to realize is that we will never live "footprint free" lives on this earth--but we can try as best we can. For instance, those non-animal products are usually from man made materials, which have to be created and dyed, often using chemicals. Anything man made usually results in residues that polute the earth. I'm sure that if one compared some man made products to the animal based ones, you'd find that at least some of the animal based ones resulted in less of a "footprint", as far as polution is concerned.

But on the other hand, who wants to kill our fellow earth creatures, the animals? I don't. Never did. I used to feel guilt when I ate a hamburger. Now I try to avoid that hamburger, for the animals sake and my own healths sake.

So what you all have said is so true: we just need to do the best we can with what we can afford. But we can never live "footprint free", I don't think...not as long as money is the center of it all for businesses. Just do the best you can and hope that "our vote" that we make when we buy those man made shoes is not resutling in greater polution of the earth. Most of us can't know these things, anyway, so we just do the best we can .

(Hmmm...I hope this posts didn't sound like "a real downer"! Ha! It's just my take on things. To be honest I was glad to learn of the things you folks shared and I will take heed of them and try to be a better shopper for vegan clothing.)

GREAT link! You can also check out Moo Shoes and DSW. I know DSW has a lot of the same brands that Moo Shoes sells at better prices.

i think like with everything else you do the best you can. It's funny how people are judgmental of others that are trying to do better in their life.

I have been having a hard time finding a good pair of winter boots that don't have leather or suede on them. I've resolved myself to the fact that it's not possible and I'm going to have to go ahead and get them.

People like to point out how hypocritical it is that I'm vegan, but who made your shirt? Do I know if it was made in a sweat shop? etc.

We all do the best we can. You can't know everything, and on a budget you have to make choices. I can't afford $400 ethically made shoes either, but I can afford to have bean soup instead of chicken soup. You do what you can.

Cheap shoes from Walmart or Payless is fine if that's the best you can do. Some day when I have more money I can take the step and grow the niche market a little, but until them I'm with the rest of you. Avoid wool, silk, leather and do the best you can!

Rheyn, You make some great points. We do have to live in the real world. We have a budget and a life to live and every thing we can do is better than nothing. If we have to buy something because we must, we are thankful and we understand the sacrifice and we don't do it lightly. I must buy a certain kind of medication that comes in a gel cap. It only comes in a gel cap. I have no choice, so I am grateful for the animal that helps to keep me healthy. It is all I can do.

I still have some leather shoes and wool and silk clothing in my wardrobe from before I became enlightened. They fit and are still good. I still wear them and will wear them until they are no longer usable to me because I cannot afford to replace them with new.

I live in casual clothes and accessories (work in scrubs, play in fitness gear), so that's pretty much all I can advise on. If you're looking for gym shoes, try PUMA. Stylish, comfy, affordable (like, half the price of Nikes), and lots of leather-free choices. They even have a very good synthetic suede. Sanita clogs are cute and supportive, and there are lots of great vegan options. LeSportsac is my favorite brand of bags, and most are all textile. It's pricey at retail cost, but consistently found in discount stores like TJ Maxx. Stella McCartney has designed for them (good luck finding her stuff cheap, though, lol!), which gives them veg cred, IMHO.

I think the most difficult part about shopping for a vegan lifestyle (as opposed to just a vegan diet) is that you have to decide where you draw your ethical line. I don't mean wearing leather versus not wearing leather (that's a no-brainer), I mean, is it enough to buy items that meet our needs, regardless of how the companies we give our money to do business, or do we only support manufacturers and designers who share our philosophy? In an ideal world, totally vegan companies would dominate, and we'd all be able to afford to only shop from them, and we'd also all find the styles and pieces that suit us. But stridently vegan consumers still comprise a VERY niche market, and we know that the reality is far from the fantasy. I guess we just continue to do what we can to support what we believe in, but, c'mon, that can be really difficult on a budget.

Places like Walmart, Payless and DSW have great non-leather shoes. I find that if you go to the cheaper retailers you have a better chance at finding them. I haven't been so lucky with purses or wallets but thankfully I have a bag problem (12 step program type problem) so I have plenty of bags. For clothing I mainly look for no silk, wool and leather. It's difficult in some things I need like chaps for riding motorcycles but I do my best.

I don't worry about clothing except to not buy leather, wool, and animal fur etc Cotton, linen are all plant based materials. Polyester and man made fabrics are good too. You can buy tennis shoes that are vegan from places like zappos just put vegan in the search box.

I've found soy and hemp clothing in a "green" boutique. The kind of store that caters to environmental issues in their book section, cruelty-free cosmetics etc. My health food store does not carry clothing.

So I'm slowly easing into becoming a vegan. I'm doing ok with the food but having a bit more of a problem with clothing. The few vegan websites I found wanted 400 dollars for shoes. That's just crazy. I can't afford that. I'm thinking maybe I"m not looking in the right places. Does anyone know where I can find good companies/ clothing that won't cost me an arm and a leg? Also, does anyone know how I can find out if an item is animal free when I'm shopping? Will it be on a tag? Thanks in advance...
