"For store bought, I like Gardein Beef-less patties and Mandarin Orange Chik'n and Quorn Naked Cutlets."

I'll have to try those sometime, Ruth--I've not tried any of the ones you mentioned before. You are so right about homemade being better. I've got to get back into the nack of making my own veggie meats like I once was doing.

Yes, I've heard that too, Boni (about seaweed giving foods a "fishy" taste). A few months ago i sought out a recipe for a salad dressing that called for anchoives (can't recall now what kind of dressing it was!) So I googled vegan versions. Some used seaweed, some used capers (which I bought) and some used some sort of olives. The olives and capers are apparently very salty (like anchovies are). The capers are still in my fridge because I never got around to making the dressing! Ha! (I'm such a procrastinator!!!)

@ Terry - Gee we must be the same age! I ate meat for as many years as you did and I still dream about a nice thick slab of prime rib. I have found that if I make my fake meat from scratch I can tweak the flavors with my choice of ingredients and spices. For store bought, I like Gardein Beef-less patties and Mandarin Orange Chik'n and Quorn Naked Cutlets. I have made Chik'n baked in Vegan Marinara with the naked cutlets for meat eaters and they love it!

@ Boni - I have tried Kombu to a couple of things I have made. I put it in my miso soup with green onions and napa cabbage too instead of tofu. I haven't tried the fake shrimp or scallops yet.

I tend to agree with you both. The vegan meats are an acquired taste I have yet to acquire. I've heard of adding kombu (seawwed) to a dish will give it a fishy taste, but...

You're probably right about that, Ruth! Sometimes it's just almost impossible to create a meat taste from a vegtable ingredient. Even though I'm okay with most veggie burgers, my mouth knows they do not 100 percent compare to the taste of beef, which I always loved. But usually the texture of veggie fake meat products is my biggest issue, though, more so than taste.

I know some long time vegans wonder why I would struggle with strange issues such as the texture of food, but when you've been a meat eater all your life, old habits are hard to break (as far as what our taste buds crave). I was a meat eater for 55 years...so it's not always been easy.

But I know high cholesterol meats is not a good road for me to travel anymore...so I gotta keep trying to help this old dog learn some new tricks! Ha!

Anyway, sorry i got off track there, Ruth! Your post just got me to thinking out loud! Ha! emoticon

@ Terry - I have tried "fake" fish. In a word, YUK. Or 2 words "Not in my mouth" - okay that's 4 words. In my opinion only God can make a fish. That tastes good that is. emoticon So once in a blue moon... Problem... We won't have a blue moon for a while.

I'll have to admit that the cream cheese and lox bagel sounds good, Ruth! I would actually also like to find vegan replacements for fish. I was never a huge fish lover, but sometimes, on rare occasions, I crave it. So I also would love to find a subsitute for smoked salmon. Somewhere on my computer I have a recipe for a vegan "fish" patty, but I've yet to try making it.

You can get good Chanukah recipes on myjewishlearning.com . They have traditional Jewish recipes and vegetarian options. My fav for Chanukah is Zucchini Latkes and a Vegan style Matzo Ball and Chik'n Soup that I made up. Basically you make vegan Matzo Balls and put them in a veggie soup made with "Better Than Broth" brand no-chicken broth (It's vegan).

@ Terry - the thing I miss most since going veg is Bagels, Cream Cheese and Lox! A totally "to-die-for" breakfast. But Lox is smoked salmon. emoticon emoticon I have yet to find a vegan substitute for smoked salmon! emoticon

I've never had much Jewish food at all, but I did have a Jewish roomate in college and he was horrified when he learned that I had never had a bagle before in my life (at the time), so he made sure one evening to prepare us some and it was good! Since that day many years ago I buy them every now and then and love them...but that's about the extent of my experience with it. Hope to get in some more variety someday than just bagels! Ha!

In case you missed it, yesterday the www.engine2diet.com posted plant-strong recipes for latkes, noodle kugel and knishes, all of which look really tasty.
