Some people think the “plant-based whole foods diet” is extreme. Half a million a year will have their chests opened up and a vein taken from their leg and sewn onto their coronary artery. Some people would call that extreme.

good luck Boni! Hopefully you are making a lot of your meal so you should be ok. Do your best, that's all anyone can ask of you.

I didn't realize how much of a challenge this was when I posted the thread. It's not as easy as it sounds is it? Thanksgiving is going to be a real test. I guess the old "keep it simple" rule applies.

Ok! No beer for me starting Monday, since I don't make it at home (yet!), so I guess I have to concede it's processed. And doing without will probably also help with the weight-loss goal.... sigh.....

I also have a conference in Oct, and expect that to be a challenge, but I got some great news yesterday. I called the hotel & explained I'm vegan, didn't expect to find a lot of options so had to bring my own food, and they're bringing a refrigerator & microwave to my room! Sweet! You never know unless you ask! I've also checked online for vegan restaurant options (not many) but the greatest help will be having my own food with me. I'm so relieved!

Thank you for sharing. Pollan is not vegan, but he is an advocate of much of what I agree with. He's for small family farms vs. factory farming and in food being as nature intended (no GMO's). I started reading in defense of food, but got sidetracked by another book. He also wrote the Omnivore's Dilemna and is in several food related documentries. Much of what he talks about in his book was covered in the documentary Food, Inc.

I hadn't heard of In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan until your post Szeretlek. Is he a vegan? What is the book about? I will have to read it.

Wow, I'm in. Given that my personal motto "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants" is a direct quote from Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food, it's time for me to commit to a challenge. Thanks for the link, Boni.

When you pick up tofu make sure it is organic so that you aren't eating genetically modified products. I would say that tofu and tempeh are fine. I liked the article that was attached to the original post. Does the ingredient list reflect things in my kitchen? I like to think of it as minimally processed because in honesty almost everything is processed.

i am going to give this a go. you wont get perfection but i hope to gain awareness.
my diet has been greatly changed in the last few months so i dont buy that many processed foods anyway.

what are you're opinions on:
tofu
soy sauce
Halloween candy- just kidding, you picked one heck of a month to say no to sweets

i think a good question would be- did my grandmother have this in her kitchen? did they use this at the turn of the century? that is what i am trying to do in my diet/ lifestyle. go back to basics and a simpler lifestyle all the way around.
she didnt have to read labels to make sure there was no MSG or else suffer migraines, night sweats and heart palpitations. every morning she saw the milk man and the ice man . she would have had sugar but it wasn't used as much.

I've been doing this kind of a challenge for the month of September and will continue, hopefully forever. It's amazing how you feel when you eliminate sugar and processed foods.

I just came across this link posted on "What Would Cathy Eat?"'s website. It is a challenge to go the entire month of October without eating processed food. The movement has grown from 410 signees in 2010 to over 3000 last year. It is an intriguing concept. I am not sure I can do it for an entire month. But I am going to give it a try. How about you? www.eatingrules.com/october-unproces
