"it turned my second batch of carrot dogs to a hot dog pink colour. "

Wow, that is an interesting turn of events! So now we can not only have the taste, but the color of a hot dog!

"Creepier and creepier, he said! "

I know what you mean! It kinda makes one wonder what other veggies can be "converted" into a meat! Ha! I've been telling a few meat eaters about Boni's "carrot dog" and so far I don't think any of them believes me! Like I said, I can't wait till the next cookout! Ha!

I steamed some beets the other day. The water left after that was deep, bright red. I put some of that in with the marinade and it turned my second batch of carrot dogs to a hot dog pink colour.

Creepier and creepier, he said!

This sounds so weird and I don't even like carrots very much, but I want to try it now! Usually I can eat stuff I don't like if I put a lot of toppings on because you can barely taste it.

Yep, I agree with Bilby--one big gold star for you, Boni! You are the queen of the carrot, as far as we are concerned! emoticon

This is a seriously great vegan tip and will prove very useful for me in avoiding fatty meats (and processed veggie meat dogs).

And also a gold star goes to you Bilby for your marinade suggestion, too!

emoticon I will have to try and freeze a couple Terry and see if freezing alters the carrots in any way. A good idea, because then like you said, you'd always have some ready to go.

It's almost a little spooky. I kept thinking, huh, this is weird, this is a hot dog. No, it's a carrot. No, shut the hell up, it's a hot dog, don't you trust your taste buds any more.
Glad you're getting excited Terry!
This is the best cooking tip or recipe I've come across on Spark.

Now that's just freaky! I mean that's just FREAKY!!!!

What I'm ranting and raving about is I just tried Boni's marianted carrot dogs and it's just freaky how much they taste like hot dogs!!!! I would have never believed it! I mean it's a carrot...how can it taste like a hot dog??! But it does!

I had intended to marinate two carrots and use Boni's italian dressing version on one and Bilby's soy sauce version on the other and see which I liked best, but at the last minute I realized I didn't have any italian dressing like I had thought I did, so I just soaked both carrots in the soy sauce, worstershire sauce and paprika that Bilby suggested.

I was shocked! To my taste buds it was basically a hot dog! I couldn't believe it! I ended up eating both of them, and it thrilled me to know I had just eaten two carrots and NO meat!

So as far as I'm concerned, I'm gonna kiss those store bought veggie dogs goodbye! This version is bound to be much healthier than them! (Now I'm wondering if they could be frozen after they are marianted and used later when a cookout comes up?)

So thanks for the recipe, Boni!!! And thanks Bilby for the soy sauce suggestion! My next goal is to marinate one with Boni italian version and another with "sausage" flavorings to see if a carrot can taste like a polish sausage!!

Man...that is just freaky!!! (In a good way, of course!) I can't wait to take one to a cook out! Ha!

Sounds really interesting. I'd start right now but by the time my carrot marinated I'd be out of town again, so I better wait till I get home again on July 31st. Glad to hear, Boni, that it doesn't taste sweet--that was my fear as well.

Oh, sorry Boni! I just reread your first post and you said you got the carrot dog recipe off a knitting chat site! I thought you said off of a vegan chat site...that's why I said that about some vegans coming up with some weird ideas! Ha! You probably thought I was talking about you, but I wasn't...I just misunderstood the source of the recipe.

Yes, I'm eager to try it...plan to start marinating a couple tonight. But like Eydie said, the meat eaters are gonna give us heck over this...when we show up at the next cookout carrying a carrot to grill!!! Hehe! (Actually, it might be fun to see their faces!!)

Good anecdote Terry. I know it sounds weird, but really, they taste like hot dogs. Not at all sweet like I was afraid they would because I don't like sweet stuff - except for maybe dark chocolate. Good to know an oil-free marinade works just as well. Thanks Bilby for the recipe.
Don't use too big of hot dogs. Bad English n'est-ce pas?

Most vegan ideas sound delicious to me, but occasionally they come up with one that doesn't! I guess I'm the only one who can't imagine a carrot replacing a hot dog! Ha!

But don't get me wrong---I'm thrilled to learn of this and want to try it, too! It sure would be healthier and sure would be lower in calories!

And I do consider hot dogs (the meat kind) one of THE most unhealthy foods on the planet! (I'll never forget watching a movie once (can't recall the name) where a human being was giving an alien from another world a tour of the things to do on earth. He gave him a hot dog and the alien liked it and asked what was in it. The human fellow said, "Nobody really knows!" LOL!!! Later on he gave the alien a soft drink. The alien asked the same question about what it was made of. "Nobody really knows!" Hehe!)

I marinated my carrots for a week. Great! Very worthwhile. I used vegan Worcestershire sauce and light soy as the marinade, a little bit of paprika sprinkled in it too. Surprisingly hot doggy flavour.

I just had the carrot dogs for supper - just the classic way with mustard and relish and were they ever delicious! A new summer favourite when I don't feel like cooking. I bet they are great with other additions as well. I marinated them in Kraft Tuscan Italian dressing, but I think any marinade would work as well. You don't really taste the marinade. Not sure if oil-free would work.

Sounds interesting. I don't mind commercial veggie dogs, the hard part is finding a decent wholemeal hot dog bun to put it in.
Given that carrots tend to be a bit sweet I'd probably go with sauerkraut and mustard.
Might try it when the weather improves.

I thought that too, but it is a great alternative answer to what do you eat when invited to a barbecue. I usually take Dreena Burton's Nutty Burger patties. Try to keep them in my freezer, but they are so good they don't last there long.

If you are like me and are not crazy about commercial veggie dogs, I just read this recipe posted on a knitting chatline (Knitting Paradise) that I belong to that I thought you might enjoy this week if you are barbecuing.
Parboil some really big carrots. Marinate them for four days in yor favourite marinade (ie Italian dressing). Cook over a hot charcoal grill until charred at bit. Put in a whole wheat bun. Add toppings, (grilled onions and peppers) hot sauce of choice (chipotle) and whatever else you like. Relish...Marinating mine right now, I will let you know how they turn out.
