that's how it works at the store in seattle, too - it isn't a chain, though, it's called jock and jill by green lake. we live 5 hours away in the beautiful methow valley, but get to the big city about every 6 weeks to see our kids who live there.

we do have the same goals - though i've only completed 2 half marathons, back in 2007!

I tend to buy a couple of pairs a year (barring mistaken choices). I tend towards Sauconys, though my last pair were Nikes. I've learned that I definitely need a wide toe box and narrow heel--I have pizza feet, with high arches.

I try all the shoes I buy around the block first but sometimes problems don't arise until after the 5K mark. There are times I think of transitioning to barefoot running just so I don't have to go through the shoe buying process. I have a pair of Saucony Kinvaras that I can't actually wear right now--they cause my calloused toes to blister.

Iv had generic shoes in past they didnt last . Then i had scheters they were great. Till i was homless the frdt time. After one day on streets i had bloody feet. Then this last time ( 2 1/2 years ago) i started homless in generic sneakers. Anouther sketcher nightmare lol. Then i got a pair if used worn out nikes. An it was heaven. Till they wore out with holes worse than when i got them. till back a while ago a special friend sent me my 2 pair. Of nikes. There on there last leg now lol. But they were like new such a dream. Iv never. Tried any of the other brands yall have entioned. Once i get over the extra monet i dont have for bus fare to drz an a few other thigs i need to try to start savin for another pair of shoes. May be a year but i beleave. Can make my current ones last. Of course in that i have no choise lol. High cost needs take a long time to get. emoticon

I had a physical therapist tell me that because of how much I walk and workout that I should get new shoes about every 6 months. Since I'm not a runner I don't keep track of my mileage. I do tend to get a couple new pairs at the same time when they are on sale. Right now I have some a pair of Ascic, New Balance and Nike waiting in the wings. I love catching a good sale on gym shoes. Sears just had them for $35 so I grabbed two pair. That's more than half off the pairs I bought.

I think we have something called Fleet Feet here where runners can get fitted for their specific gate and running style.

We have a store here - outlets found right across Canada - The Running Room - which also allows you to try on shoes and run in them before you buy. They analyze your gait - pronator etc. which I found really helpful when I first started out. It seems that I have the same weight loss goals as you too - only you seem to be more successful! :-) I really need to focus! I have read so much about Seattle - I really have to visit it some day.

you sound like me - those are my choices too, plus asics. we have a great running store that we visit in seattle where you can try on half a dozen pairs and even get to run around the block to see which feel best. we were there in february and i bought new balance this time, which i absolutely love. i haven't had them farther than 5.5 miles of running yet (probably max distance of 6 miles of walking so far), but they feel great (and i also need a wide toe).

If your running shoes look anything like mine do after the winter ( hole in the toe, filthy, over 700 km on them) perhaps it's time to break down and get new shoes for the upcoming races. I get a new pair for every half. Runner's World has posted their new shoe picks for spring...
www.runnersworld.com
Type: Shoe Picks in their search engine.
What's your favourite? I've tried everything - I like Mizuno for lightness, and Saucony and New Balance for support and the wide toe.
For those of you in other parts of the world, what are your favourite links to running shoe evaluations?
