Thanks for the info, Rhey. I'll give Penzey's a try (I didn't know about them before.)

Don't despair, Michelle. It's better to have a roof over your head, food and a dream (or wish list.)

Another spice fiend here. I'm lucky enough to have a Penzeys a mile and a half away, so you can imagine what my pantry looks like. Buying the big bags works for me because I use lots of herbs and spices, but I can see how it would not ultimately be economical if you end up throwing a good portion away. Still, the small jars are about the same price as (or a little cheaper than) what you find in the grocery store, and the quality is superb. I've never shopped from their catalog or website, but I know that the selection is the same -- plus, if you join the mailing list, every catalog they send has a LEGITIMATELY GOOD coupon: for instance, the most recent is $5 off a $10 purchase.

Agreed about the "spices" at the dollar store. I've used some in a pinch (e.g. on vacation) and it's not pretty. Save yourself the trouble, and spend three times as much for the real deal, which is at least five times as good. (You do the math!)

It's paprika that's been smoked (I think), but the taste is quite different and adds a delicious depth and richness to foods. I heard about it through a cooking class video done at one of Dr. McDougall's weekend seminars.

Michelle, can you get free books from your local library. I have a nook tablet and I can download books to my computer using a free program called "Adobe Digital Editions" and then put them on my nook. I don't know if you have a laptop or other computer available so you can do the transfer. But these books are free from the library and you only need a library card.

If you're near something like Whole Foods, someplace with bulk bins, you can often get herbs and spices for very little money because you can start with any quantity you like. Start with a Tablespoon's worth, for instance.

When I moved I had to compost all my herbs and spices. emoticon I had bunches, all kinds of things, I picked up here and there, a little at a time.

I know people say spices only keep a few months, but I'd always keep them cool and away from the stove, never dumping from the container right over, say, a pot of soup, and I fresh grind as often as possible, or grind things in my hands before using them to bring out the flavors and oils. Still tasted great to me!

Michelle, Do you like Indian food? I couldn't do without my curry powder, cardamom, or coriander. You also don't say anything about cilantro, basil, chili powder, liquid smoke, or fresh ground black pepper. or ginger, or....... lol I have tons. I am a spice maniac.

I seen shiva ask me a a question on the weekend coffee break. Once again im having a problems with answering on there. so i thought this is a really good topic. So i decided to look up info on spices an herbs an learned. Some know an i vaguelly knew herbs an spices are used in medicinal ways, preservatives, ect. For example i like most veg people use tumeric for example to make egg (tofu) tofu scrambles. But in india here few other countries an maybe here in the usa tumeric is used to preserve food. I think that fact got my attention.
In my arsnel of spices i have tumeric, paperika, cumin, garlic powder (for when im out of fresh witch i much prefer. I learned fresh garlic can be counted a vegetiable.), dry bay leafes, dry parsley (again when i dont have fresh) my spices are truly limited due to finaces. I am adventuresome an would love to try many other spices an herbs.
