Turkish, Greek and Lebanese food was very common in the areas I grew up in (lots of post WW2 migration from those countries), so a falafel roll (pita bread with falafel, hummus, salad and tahini) was a very common takeaway food item - and it's vegan! Most takeaway shops deep-fry it, but baking is much lower fat and tastes just as good.
As you can see from the recipes, it's very easy to make your own - or you can buy dry mixes in the grocery (just add water). I can buy it premade in tubs in my grocery store, too - just scoop and bake/fry.
There are often great vegan options at a turkish restaurant if you want to go out for a meal with a group of omnivores.
I've never eaten falafel in my life, but the recipe sounds good! Thanks for posting it, Phraser. I've been looking for more veggie burger recipes. Lately I've gotten into the bad habit of eating mostly the storebought ones...but none of them are as good as the homemade kind, so I'm glad to get a new recipe!

Thanks everyone for all the great ideas.! I have alot of homework to do,lol, but I know I can do this! So far so good. Now I need to buy a decent Juicer, mine is a cheep one on it's last leg, but better than nothing for now!
Here's another recipe - I haven't tried this but it sounds like it could benefit from adding 2 tsp ground flax to the recipe, so that it doesn't fall apart as much. I might give this one a try tomorrow, as I have shelled edamame in the freezer at the moment. recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai l. asp?recipe=550297
This is a 2 part question. First, I am looking for a great vegan burger ( not frozen) that I can put together myself. It also needs to be gluten free for me. Any ideas?
I also just got a confirmation that I do have RA. and it has been very painful recently. They want to put me on some medication that requires 2 injections a week and I told them NO!!!...at least not yet anyway.... I told them I want to do more research on more natural ways to treat this. I already have seen about Vegan diet being the best for RA, but I need to look even further. While I know theres no cure for this, there has to be a better way to slow the progression down. So, if anyone else suffers from this miserable form of arthritis, I hope to hear from you!
