Hi Karen, I misread your suggestion - I thought it said 5 raw fruits a day, not 5 raw fruits AND VEGIES. I definitely eat more than 5 serves of fruits AND veggies a day, just not usually 5 serves of fruits. I usually eat 5 serves veggies and 2-3 serves fruits (fruits are higher calorie so I try to go for veggies instead).

I usually don't eat much in the way of raw veggies (this week has been an exception), and for me raw food is not intrinsically better than cooked, so it's still probably not a challenge that I would find useful - but each to their own!

Another great way to get every color veggie & leafy greens!!!
I start every day with a green smoothie that includes spinach or kale, banana, tomato, carrots, celery, orange, apple, kiwi, red pepper, ginger & everything else I can through into the mix. I love my juice! It starts the day off right!!

Team, I figured out how to edit the goals, so the new ones are now posted. Phraser, don't tell anyone, but I started the new year chowing down on cookies - but they were broken - so no calories! Loved the line about cookies being afraid of heights! :-) I didn't know that about greens either. Anyhow - I'll count them as the g in roygbiv.

Crustiferous It's a slightly different part of the plant kingdom. That's why you don't have to worry about food combining with leafy greens. You can mix them in green smoothies with about anything. I can't add any milky products to my green smoothies but that is just me.

I was surprised to find that out.

Phraser, actually leafy greens are technically not vegies, nor fruits. I wasn't actually thinking of them. I thought you did eat 5 per day. Even dehydrated are considered fresh in my book.

Shiva, I'm sure there are people who live places that leafy greens are available all year, so the challenge would be great for them. Not everyone needs to do all the challenges. I wouldn't do the raw one Karen proposed because I don't eat 5 fruit servings a day (usually aim for 3 tops) but I'm sure it will be great for many people.

boni, I loved the humor! Thanks!

As to new team goals: Eat at least 5 raw fruits or vegies each day. That's pretty doable for everyone.

Both are great ideas! emoticon emoticon emoticon Now I just have to figure out how to add them to our team's goals. Vegfaery? My tech whiz?

Ngā mihi o te Tau Hou ki a koutou katoa (Happy New Year to you all)

Bonidale, have you heard the one about broken cookies? Apparently they have no calories, because the calories leak out when the cookie breaks. I also have a friend who keeps the cookies on the top shelf in the pantry, because 'calories are afraid of heights'.

For a goal, how about

I'm not so sure about the leafy greens one - there are times of year when leafy greens aren't in season at all, so we don't eat any, but still manage to get our 5 vegetable and 2 fruit servings without difficulty. Maybe just make it green vegetables, rather than leafy green? (Unless you count broccoli as leafy?)

How about eating at least one fruit/vegetable from each colour group every day? (red, purple/blue, yellow/orange, green, white/brown). This is recommended to ensure that you get a good balance of antioxidants and some variety in your food consumption (and in Japan it's considered aesthetically important). Here, it's feasible to get some of each colour group every day at any time of year, if you're a bit creative.

How about: Eat at least one cup of leafy greens per day.

Thanks for the humour, Bonidale. That was nice.

Here's one of my favorite Ogden Nash poems:

Tell me O' Octopus, I begs,
Is those things arms or is they legs?
I marvel at thee Octopus,
If I were thou I'd call me us.

Well, as 2011 draws to a close, and for some of you it already is 2012, I'd thought that I would take the lead from Shivamoon and end our Fitness and Nutrition year on a humourous note...(from
www.glasbergen.com )
"A balanced diet is a chocolate in both hands."
"I was going to get up early to go jogging, but my toes voted against me 10 - 1."
" The handle on your recliner does not qualify as an exercise machine."
Also...
We need some new goals. The old ones, Try one new fruit, vegetable or grain per week and Eat no processed food, have been posted for ages. So, if you have any ideas for new goals for 2012, I would love to hear them!
