Hummus is great. I have to say I have never thought of it as a vegetable/fruit, but it's great with sprouts, tomatoes, spinach, cucumber, and any number of other vegetables (or fruits, since tomato and avocado are technically fruits...)

Does anyone else consider potato to be a vegetable? I had always thought of it as a starch, but if you follow the 'eat your 5 colours' approach, it's considered a 'white/brown' category vegetable, and in the government nutrition guidelines here it's a vegetable. Guess they had to appease the potato farmers!

I think we both know that animals are a lot smarter and a lot more human than most humans believe. My little Fritzi loves to play fetch like a dog. The toy has to be thrown in a specific way though (and that way changes constantly! LOL),

That's really interesting, Karen. As far as we know, cats don't taste sweet things particularly well, but mine have always preferred sweeter fruits and vegetables (a cat I had once even liked honey), and it sounds like yours was the same. Maybe it's something about the texture that was appealing - or maybe they taste sweet things better than we think!

Long ago I had a cat that did the same thing with nectarines, can you believe it? She would beg me for a large piece and even steal it from my plate if I didn't give her her own dish of it. It was at a time I didn't have very much money and nectarines weren't cheap! I kept on having to buy more. Just to fed the dern cat. LOL

Phraser, I've not noticed my cats having any other odd veggie yearnings. As a kitten, a cat I had long ago snatched a whole strand of spaghetti with tomato sauce from my hand (she was begging, so I held it up to her so she could see for herself she wouldn't want it) -- her paw came out like lightning and she swiped it out of my hand, ate it in a moment flat and wanted another one. I found out later that tomatoes were not good for cats, but she lived a good long cat life.

Your cats with their peas and corn are funny!

Shiva and PHRASER, as long as their butts don't smell like onions I'll live through it. LOL As an avid cat lover, I am known as Mama Cat around my home. Mama Cat has daily butt inspections - a sign of trust and effection I guess - and believe me I really would like a different duty!

Cats with onion breath? No thanks! I love cats, but not with onion breath. I thought they liked catnip.

Good early morning. Ever since transitioning to mostly raw I've been waking up very early. Great for getting things done before the family starts waking.

That's really interesting, Shivamoon... it's amazing what some animals will go for. My cat loves green peas, sweet corn kernels and cut up cooked carrot (as well as grass) but is not interested in chickpeas or any kind of bean. She will even pick peas out of a spicy curry (and then sit and lick her lips for ages afterwards as the chili kicks in).

Onions can be poisonous to cats (although I'm not sure if green onions and chives are as bad as the white or brown onions), but if it's only small amounts and they do it often they might have developed a tolerance to them.

Do your cats have any other unusual vegetable or fruit tastes?

I wish my cats just nibbled the tips off. Little monsters they bite near the roots. They will even eat my chives and green onions. It's very funny to have cats that smell like onions.

Wheat and oat grass are both fine for cats to eat (it can help with hairballs, too) - maybe if you make a small pot of it for them they will leave yours alone? (you can grow oats/wheat for cats in potting soil, and in my experience it will last two or three months before you need to germinate some more, as they usually just nibble the tips off the plants)

It's pretty strange actually. There are simply vegies I won't eat unless they are in juice. I just realized this this past week. I do a glass a day and seems to be just perfect.

I'm so glad you are doing the growing of your food. It's such a wonderful way of getting back to our roots, excuse the pun.

I'm a little concerned about growing my wheat grass because I'm worried the cats will eat it! I'll have to put it on the top shelf of my shelving unit in my sun room. They can't reach it there. LOL

I have just planted a bunch of oats that I've sprouted (for my cat), and the seeds I planted last weekend are all popping through the soil now too (basil, lettce, silverbeet) too, exciting!

I don't juice, as I don't personally find drinking my calories to be very helpful - I like to eat the whole piece of fruit or
vegetable. I find that more satisfying. Basically it's the same reason that I don't do smoothies. I usually just drink water, herbal infusions, tea and coffee. But if juices work for you, great!

Thanks Phraser. I see you did mung bean shoots. I love those. I haven't had any for years. I am growing my first crop of sunflower greens and also pea shoots. Those little guys and gals are doing great. It will be another week before I can harvets them though.
