I haven't given up the pasta but I absolutely have to portion it out right after I'm finished making it. After my husband and I get our portions, 4 other portions go into the fridge. If I'm feeling bingey I'm a lot less likely to get a container out of the fridge than to just scoop some more out of the pot.

I don't buy chips at all anymore. If my husband buys them he puts them into what we jokingly call the "secret cabinet" and I never know they're there. I do not open the secret cabinet. LOL

I have a similar problem. Can't really keep salsa and chips in the house, especially the Baked Tostitos that are like miniature bowls. Also, I buy my kids Whole Foods Market and Rudi's breads, lately whole wheat varieties, and they won't eat the ends, so guess who's doing that? And the ends are so thick! Sometimes like two slices of bread! I'm such a glutton. I'm surprised they don't call that other thing glutton-free instead of gluten-free LOL.

I love good whole grain breads & pastas, too, but find I'm not eating them much anymore. I have oatmeal almost every morning and sometimes in the evening like dessert. I put in raisins, walnuts, a bit of stevia, Saigon cinnamon and lowfat soymilk. Maybe that's taken the place of the bread/pasta cravings, but I never overdo it because it's very filling. You might be able to tell though, my food's pretty basic. I'm not exactly a gourmet.

I try to stick with whole grain breads. A few times a week I have an Ezekiel English muffin for breakfast and really enjoy it. If I have a sandwich for lunch, it's on flaxseed bread. The only one that calls me to have a second piece is artisanal bread at dinner, and I suspect I'd be better off without it. My DH is amazed that I'll pass it up altogether, but I'd rather have my healthy dessert. Logging in my meals ahead of time helps me make those kinds of choices.

Thanks everyone for your tips. I suppose it really comes down to moderation. I do eat whole grains like quinoa, millet, barley, etc. I am able to eat those in moderation just not the pasta and bread. Just gotta get it together.

Hmmmm. For me, just forced myself to get out of the habit of having bread for lunch. Now, after a few months of (mainly raw) vegetable lunches, I don't find bread filling any more. Yesterday I had a roll just for a bit of variety ... ended up having a 600 calorie lunch that was not quite satisfying, as compared to my usual veg & dip lunch which comes in about 350 calories even when I eat as much as I want. My mental associations with bread are less positive than they used to be so it's easier to say no or eat in moderation ... kind of an 'amber traffic light' food for me now. Probably the same with pasta. Instead of 2 bowls of pasta I might have just 1, plus 1 of salad. I feel less gluggy afterwards and the calorie count is much lower. And I find myself looking forward to the salad as much as the pasta, frankly.
all the best,
A

I share the carb addiction with you.

For me, I have to avoid breads and white potatoes like the plague. It's not like I can have a little and be fine. Once I have that first bite I can't stop until there is nothing left.

I do notice that I have a lot more self control when eating gluten-free items. They are expensive and some are nasty but, when you find the tasty ones, I can eat a serving and be happy.

So find one of those carb 12-step programs and admit you are powerless over bread. Hi, my name is Terje.

I am having such a hard time with breads and pastas and starches in general. It is like I do not have a mind of my own and gravitate towards them. Thankfully I make good decisions as far as choosing the right breads and pastas. But I have been a potato wedge junkie for days now. It is disgusting. Another starch I have been clinging to is the blue corn chip. I eat them with salsa after work and I veg out and scarf a bunch down. I know a lot of new vegans go through this but I am not really new. It really sucks when we know we are doing wrong but we still do it. That is how we end up overweight in the first place. Not sure how to kick this starch craving. Any suggestions friends?
