Friday.. oh boy oh boy I'm happy about that. I'm off the weekend and Noni and I returned to our condo. Rode our bikes to the sushi restaurant.. refrained from ordering to much this time.. I always over order... I'm full but not stuffed ...
unfortunately Fitbit doesn't recognize my ride.. but I'm happy with the step count and mileage.

Well next week is our staff party.. when I first started I cooked this... then the owner decided to give me a break and he orders food from local restaurants..
My big mouth .... he was going to order pulled pork ... I mentioned I had pulled pork on the menu Tuesday... I could change it... then he realized pulled pork was nothing really special for the staff and everyone really likes mine. I had causally mentioned .. my big mouth... pay me extra and let me cater the staff party... nothing said... an hour later when I was in my cabin he sends me a message he wants to talk about the staff party can we chat.....
Well I went over to the office... They want me to cook for the staff party and he will pay me extra.
Rough menu ... BBQ steak, lobster, shrimp, corn on the cob ... Salads ... and can Noni make Sushi and some other special vegan meals.. total staff number is 25 to 30 people.
I will like the extra money for sure... the issue more so is attitude.. if drama at camp stays high and I'm so stressed I don't want to go all out and wow the staff, .... i guess I need to keep my feelings out of it and be professional.

Oh I'm not finished... my other parttme winter job... called me .. a client has booked the facility for a wedding in July . But has no cook and can't find one.. am I off? Would I do the wedding...?
Well I'm off... will I do a wedding for 60 people?
I have told them two or three times I'm not interested in cooking weddings... to much extra stress... everything has to be perfect .. this is a day that is remembered forever... if something goes wrong... You understand why I would be stressed..

Well I caved... I agreed to cook this wedding... I have a gut feeling it won't be my last...
They also want a BBQ .. BBQ chicken, maybe a roast beef , veggies.. a full sit down menu buffet style. And of course the bride is vegan and wants a vegan choice as well. Noni probably will have to make a vegan cake and I'll buy other deserts.

Meanwhile I worry about Mom and my Dalhousie who has his birthday tomorrow... Saturday 14 years old... been at my side all his life since six weeks old... we been through so much together.

. Dalhousie enjoys his behind the cabin times with me

June 8, 2017
Activity: 20,205 steps (9.4 miles)

It's been a crazy week... last Thursday I visited Mom.. found out she was back in hospital... nurses informed Noni and i that she was declining and I should talk to her doctor. Talking more with the nurses they felt she would not last very long at all.. later that night the doctor phoned me.. he thinks two or three months ... maybe longer..
so every night we been going to visit her after work.
She seems to be improving...
work has been stressful as well... yesterday we fed 240 campers... every other day it was 121 hungry mouths. Also I suspect my relief cook to be stealing food ... I talked to the owner ...
we won't mention the stressful relationship I have with the kitchen coordinator...

. Seen while driving home from a visit with Mom

. I have been having little camp fires behind our cabin to release stress.

we bought a lawn chair.. our swing was broken over the winter.. thenowner says he will replace it.. in the mean time I can't wait I want to relax outside on my afternoon coffee break

Feeling grateful that I have a job, but very unhappy with the job. Welcome to the real world I guess.. for the most part for the last eight years I have enjoyed waking up and going into the kitchen and cooking those long hours and delicious foods.
This year it has been a chore, drama and just an unpleasant experience, and we are just beginning...

Oh well I'm off for the next three days...
to start off my weekend I went home and lit up the BBQ

The Four big waits
As I drive to Vancouver this morning I was thinking about some of the Big Waits I have waited...
Waiting for Christmas morning and Santa clause ...
Waiting for my first child to arrive and all the anxiety and joy as the doctor tells me all is well.
Waiting for the test results for Aids when I found out my ex wife had been having affairs before our separation / divorce
Waiting now for the test results of my cancer biopsy...

All is Well ... the test at this time show no signs of Cancer

Praise God

Sundays are normally difficult days for me to get my ten thousand steps in.. Today I really didn't believe it would happen. This morning we skipped church, I was just feeling unmotivated to move. Around lunch time I decided I had to take the Dalhouise outside... even he hadn't asked to go out today thus far.
Once we walked around the block, I came back and began to collect and organize our camp supplies and load the car. Many steps began to add up as I did that. Then a trip to the grocery store to buy food for camp.. more steps.
The car was full - very full. So Noni and I drove to camp to unload.. Lots of steps doing that.
Since it was not dark and kind of nice outside -- we went for a little walk and a steep hill climb to get more steps in and floors recorded on my Fitbit.

Tomorrow we move to Camp and begin our six month contract.
I expect 15,000 to 20,000 steps per day just by working in the kitchen everyday my 8 to 10 hours ... but what will be hard is getting floors in as Camp has no stairs for me to climb.

I wonder how Fitbit will record my cycling ?

Dalhousie I agree is probably healthy and strong because of the exercise and life at camp -- but these are no match for Old Age. He is like his human... more now then before.. I am loosing my hearing... below normal now was the result of the test I had done last November. I have been blind in one eye ( almost blind very limited) since I was about five or six years old. And I certainly have old age aches and pains that working with youth can't prevent..

Road Trip - this was day Four... will catch up once we get home so many things we seen and so many pictures

So bad - very very bad !
We were out walking with the Dalhousie stopped to take some pictures and somehow began talking to a local. This person highly recommended to go to this bakery ... the magic words -- Noni always checks out bakeries. Most are terrible with only a few things.. this one was is the best one we have ever walked into so far. ( Noni loves to bake)

Today is a write off.. failure when steps count..
Miserable outside...
However very productive when it comes to work.
All morning meetings with the Camp owner and Camp Director, discussing about this up coming years menu and scheduling and changes to procedures. It appears I will get most weekends off and an occasional week day off .. they have hired a relief chef and a kitchen coordinator.

After this I drove over to our part time job and discussed how we can continue to work occasionally with them over the next six months. That was another two hours of talks.. wow time flies by fast..
Then returned home ate -- this was just after two
Sent three emails to different people concerning extra work I do in preparation of the Camp season...
My eyes were growing heavy so heavy. Fitbit says I only had 4.5 hours sleep last night. Yes that's about correct. Went to bed normal but couldn't sleep.. got up watched a tv program .. back to bed tossed and turned .. mind racing about the meetings and menus running through my mind.
Woke up early.
Prepared notes and skipped morning coffee and breakfast and drove to camp. 45 minutes drive in the rain ...
Heavy eyes.. about 3:30 went for a nap - 6 pm wake up for supper that Noni has prepared.. and now I just sit on the couch.. not motivated to even to try to get my five thousand steps minimum in... I know I will regret this decision
I know I will feel guilty tomorrow

What am I to do.. don't bother telling me.. it's too late .. I'm going back to bed and read.

After the Provincial Park walk - we took the Dalhousie home and Noni and I went up the Sea to Sky Gondola. It will be our first time in two years. First time we ever bought a pass... this year the company changed passes from seasonal to annually. I'm also counting on more time off of camp this year. The promise of a relief cook for weekends... so I hope to use this pass much more.

It's going to be awesome ones the clouds roll away

Today turned out to be so awesome. Not that many steps .. really .. but a good day nevertheless.
Mom enjoyed our time together

Then we went for a drive to Cypress Provincial Park

I should go back here and walk up this mountain... can you imagine the floors and steps my Fitbit would track? Hmmm a seed is planted...

Came home to these delicious dishes

Woke up, looked outside -- I'm certainly torn between hating this winter and loving what my eyes behold. I decided to go for a little drive out to camp to check in...

My big mouth... yesterday I said I wanted to hike at Alice Lake.. so I had too..
Well early this morning I looked outside and said I have no excuses not to,go it looked as if it was going to be a sunny day.
I sure wasn't expecting what I found at the trail head. Also it begins to snow. The trails are sheer ice I'm Not prepared for that. I only have one hiking pole and no spikes on my hiking boots. I decide to forge ahead hoping the path will clear.. it does not. So instead of hiking the four lakes trail 6 k. I hike around Stump Lake 1.5 km and drive to another trail that is clear...
I go from winter to glorious spring in matters of a few minutes...

As I park the car I am blown away at the difference. The snow has stopped and everything is looking so green.. so off I go to get my steps...

March 4, 2017 (Today)
Activity: 11,497 steps (5.3 miles). I hope to out again later this afternoon

. Winter
Now a few minutes drive ...
. Spring

Now you see the difference..

March 3, 2017 (6.2 miles) Rain - pouring rain
13,401 steps (6.2 miles)

Virtually... Appalachian Trail
Done: 316.8 mi / 682,343 steps
To-Do: 1,885.2 mi / 4,060,766 steps

How to keep myself motivated to walk -- especially in the pouring rain? Well today I walked to the post office to mail, several postcards. Then I decided to head north along the Sea to Sky Trail. The last I remember it was not completed in this section- today I walked along to see how far they have gotten. Wow the trail is done to the new subdivision they are building. I think if it was more dry I would had kept going.. but at this New subdivision I turned around.. I was getting wet. I'll be back either by foot, or I'll get the bike out.. almost time to start riding my bike.

Tomorrow-- we'll see how motivated and how I feel in the morning I want to hike at Alice Lake Provincial Park.. my day pack is packed with treats and a change of clothes.

I'm craving burgers.. help,me to,stay strong .. I must resist

. My wife made this while I was out walking ..

February 28, 2017 (10.1 miles). .... 21,715 steps (10.1 miles)

This morning very early before breakfast-- before I even had a coffee I went out the door and walked to town and back.
Came home and walked the Dalhousie around the block.
Later I went swimming then walked around the recreation center a couple of times.
Came back home and once more walked the Dalhousie.
Slowly the step count rose and I have walked 10 miles ...

I truly have beautiful area to walk ... these photos are all from this mornings walk.

Yeah, sometimes I really worry what we're coming to, the way people act.
Did you hurt yourself, is that why you had an infection? I worked with someone who was trimming up a big old leg of pork, the knife slipped and she cut herself pretty badly. It bled a lot so we thought she'd be ok but it did get something inside her and she got blood poisoning from the pork. It was pretty nasty. I always think about that when people get infections.

I like red wine....

Fingers crossed..
I woke up from a strange dream, I'm not all that into dream interpretations, but....
My dream... my younger mother was living in the house of her late parents who were alive in the house as well.... for some reason I was having a issues about what room I was to have with my late older brother.. I was involved in a breakup and was moving in, also quarreling over the use of the phone and limiting time talking to girlfriends. I wake up...
Laying in bed for a few moments I realize I don't need to rush to the washroom...
I go there anyways and all seems normal once more.. has the infection finally broken..
There seems to be no issues at this time..... fingers crossed. Today is the last day for the antibodies.... I am also just realizing I actually had a full night sleep too instead of the several wake ups...

Side note...
We were at the pool the other day, two younger female teenagers came in and for at least half an hour sat together at one end of the pool in tiny two peace bathing suits. The area they were in was getting wonderful sunlight streaming in through large windows. They used their cell phones taking pictures of each other posing .. I know things like this happen, I know often worse poses take place behind closed doors ... but these tiny two piece bathing suits were not concealing much. I wonder where those pictures would end up out their in cyberspace.
I talked to the life guard about this... she only said she saw them too and wished they would actually swim, there is no rule saying you can't take pictures and they were in a quiet part of the pool and were not taking pictures of anyone else, so nothing could be said or done....

Yesterday morning when I walked the Dalhousie to the park, in a backyard next to it I noted...
In the yard was three very young girls wearing pjs and housecoats - not sure if they had slippers on or not - certainly not dressed for outside on a cold morning. One was playing with a huge dog with a stick, one was just walking around, another was doing something in the mud.
What really caught my eye though was a very small boy wearing nothing - Nothing - but a sagging diaper who was in the garden picking up things. The temperature was if I remember correctly was -4 c It may had warmed up slightly by the time I walked Dalhousie but it still was cold I was wearing three layers and I was chilled.
Eventually a man came outside wearing a black housecoat talking on a phone. I just kept on walking in the park and the man stood in the door way talking on the phone not really paying attention to the kids ... that was how I left the park.... what in the world is wrong with people?

I said I'm going for a walk

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way,
Where many paths and errands meet.

This is walk number one, I still need to go the door again this day..

It's not snowing....
It's not raining ...
The sun is trying to burst forth ...

So I hear rumours that tomorrow we are going to get snow, freezing rain, rain --- Bad weather.
So I got out the door for four walks today .. my knee is suffering a little and my back is hurting. My back began hurting in the swimming pool today as I did laps. I was hoping after sitting in the hot tub it would be better.. that helped somewhat but I still feel it.
I went to the doctor today.. the new medicine he had prescribed for me .. was giving me extreme dizziness and nausea. So today he changed it.. I wonder if that has anything to do with the little weight loss ...?

Of course I had my camera with me most of today.. enjoy........

Did I mention that we stopped to eat lunch?

February 6, 2017 (6.0 miles). 13,000 steps

Well all morning I just sat on the couch. Then just before noon I suggested to Noni that we go for a walk. We walked to Wendy's to buy a chilli and Dalhousie had a burger.
I'm surprised now that I'm home I still feel strong... that is a good thing.

Here are a few things we seen on our neighbourhood walk
putting on some spikes for traction

just like the real trail, we have bridges to cross streams

So this day my scale remained fast at 232 lb. not pleased.

February 5, 2017 (4.9 miles) 10,640 steps

Appalachian Trail
Done: 143.3 mi / 308,655 steps

Today my cold bug is back, throats is so sore and a headache that just won't go away. I'll not mention that my body aches all over too.
Outside is so grey.. the roads are grey, the sky is grey the mountains are whitish grey and the snow is all greyish. It feels like an Ontario November too me..

Well I went out the door to walk the Dalhousie
. Brought him inside and then Noni and I went to church.
After church I did a very quick drop in to visit my mom ( we wore masks) said hello and then left. Ate lunch at sushi
Then sat on the couch. Sat and sat... looking at my Fitbit.. I need to step 5000 more steps... I don't want to get off the couch.. I sit with this nagging disappointment of not getting 10,000 steps in.. Ok Ok ... I dress up and go outside to walk..

look the snow banks are like mountains

It's Saturday... nasty windy blowing snowing day.. not very motivational to go out the door. I have had enough of winter. However I did go out and made my steps..
Pictures I'm going to post are from yesterday from one of my three walks. Today walks were just around the block three different times - and I left the camera home being so nasty out.

Before I share some pictures.. I have a question--- do you dread the scale? This is the first time I have this dread of stepping on the scale. I'm in no contest with anyone, just myself. Yet I don't want to see the number on the scale .. I feel as if I'm loosing, my tummy is showing a softness that wasn't there before.. oh well tomorrow morning is weigh in day and what will be will be !

Enjoy

Today is my weigh in I went from 235 lb to 234.5 lb. I thought I should had lost more.. I have gotten all my steps in and have eaten better this week.. maybe it is because I have this nasty cold bug that hit me hard Friday night.. Just maybe I'll drop an extra pound or two when I feel better... I dream ..
So I am VIRTUALLY HIKING THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL -- this is my progress so far

Appalachian Trail
Done: 58.7 mi / 126,438 steps

Stage 3: Unicoi Gap
Done: 18.2 mi / 39,201 steps

I walked the Dalhousie around the block, then I took him home that was 3000 steps. Then out the door I went again to walk 7000 steps.
I bought myself a Fitbit and joined walking for fun where I can walk the Appalachian trail virtually. I'm going to really like that ...

Walking for fun ...

Appalachian trail. (Virtual)
I started walking today 8.3 km
( 5.1 miles)
These are my real sights as I walked around my home....

Yes the Dalhousie remains at home.. we tried to get him to,walk around the block two times but he dragged his feet and would not move along until,we faced home..
He has been a couch potato all day ...
however the snow plow hs just plowed our parking lot in the condo,so I'm going to,make him go outside again -- he has to do his business before I get ready for bed... I don't want him waking me up in the middle,of the night ..

I had to turn around before I reached my destination as I don't have chains for my snow tires. Nevertheless we parked the car did a steady uphill hike to enjoy a walk In a wet snowing afternoon.

So I went for a walk this morning just before a light sprinkle of rain fell.

It's not raining and I have no appointments to think about so I take the Dalhouise on a little walk around our neighbourhood pond.

What did I see? You ask!
Let me show you ...

I can not walk fast because of my knee pain and Dalhouise age. So I get to slow down and just enjoy my moments and smell the forest or a flower or two

Dalhouise was being watched

First Monday off - time to walk around the pond before we go for a noontime swim then a doctor appointment. ( my blood pressure is perfect says the doctor... but what's with my heart?)
Well in the next coup,e of days I'll go to the hospital to get blood work and a chest X-ray - in the mean time he wants me to take baby aspirin once a day..
I went to the doctor for my two year annual check up and to have him refer me to a specialist about the pain in my left knee -- from car accident.

Well back to my morning rain walk with the Dalhouise..

Wow. Here it is October and I'm down to the last few weeks.
It's been a very long and stressful year this year, I wonder if I'll be going back next year?

Glad that you have a little time to yourself to stop in! I know that this is your super busy time of the year!
We are busy but not as busy as it will get once the fall semester starts up in a couple of weeks. I'm trying to get my staffing numbers up. Partners decided to " let go" my assistant. To be fair, she wasn't worth the money that we were paying her, but at least she was something. Now I have no one, at least until we find a replacement.
Always something.

. This afternoon I took Noni to the lake for swim.

it was too cold for me to make the plunge today. Yesterday was perfect - hot, calm, and sunny - not today. Today was windy, overcast and a chill in the air.

On a positive note I found my sunglasses laying in the muck where I put the kayak in yesterday.

I went on a short hike, to Alice Lake Provincial Park earlier this month, I left Noni in the kitchen to serve our guess after I had prepared the meal. This me time was so needed.
I brought our little MSR camp stove to make tea and heat up some chili down by the river.
All in all I spent three hours just relaxing soaking up some sun and unwinding mentally.

The baby was left home too

The season keeps crawling forward.. I do have a good front of the house coordinator now but the dishwasher boys are driving us all crazy. There is hope of improvements- when is October?

I had two days off together with my wife and we left camp and went to our condo. Today is my mothers birthday so we celebrated it with her.
Yesterday we drove to Vancouver and watched Tarzan, I enjoyed it.
Here are a few pictures of our weekend..
mom is 80

Noni made this cake

BBQ

Well 165 hungry campers are arriving tomorrow for the next two weeks.. Back to the grind.
