Yes, it is possible that you need more carbs than you've been eating--many of us do, sometimes, now and then. Metabolisms vary. As do carbs. I've learned that, for myself, at this stage of my life, a single starch-based meal once or twice a month can keep me nearer the low end of my five-pound maintenance range. Which is lovely! Means I get to eat the occasional potato or some grilled corn while feeling virtuous -G- But pizza and pasta are still cheats it takes days to get past, and sugar is an entirely different scenario.

Some of the paleo followers manage more carbs than I, but they give up dairy and artificial sweeteners...

I go to bed by 9 every night, sometimes earlier and am asleep by 10 but I have a bad back so when I roll I'l often wake myself up, and it's been hot here so I do the hot/cold thing, peppered iwth having to get up and pee at least once, sometimes more. So, although I get up between 5:30-6:00 I'm not getting 7.5 - 8 hours.

Cortisol. . . I'll have to check that out- I get stressed, sometimes it's subconsious so that could be it.

Is it at all possible I need more carbs than what I'm eating?

In regards to the lower metabolism . . . I 'get it' . The information my nutritionist (which I now have left after 15 years) and my fitness certification 'learning' says . . . that if I get on my mini-tramp for 15 minutes a.m., afternoon, & evening, I would be able to get my metabolism jump started. I'd still be working out, teaching, riding my bike & walking/hiking.

Getting old is NOT for sissies. Moving the body is essential. No, I don't get on my mini-tramp 3x a day. Why? That's the mystery of life. LOL! Easy procedures . . . I should do planks every single day also . . . do I? NO. I should do arm curls with weights every single day as well as weighted leg lifts . . . NO, I don't do those either. Easy fixes . . . . lazy mind.

Lazy lazy woman. It's still my decision NOT to do what would get me sculpted & strong & jump started. I'm doing the best I can. YIPPEE! Life is still FUN! Connie

Faith, I have wondered about cortisol too, but I'm not sure that applies to me. In one of our challenges I made getting enough sleep a priority, so I really think I am. And my stress level is way down. I've read so dang much on nutritional requirements, ratios, etc that I'm pretty tired of it. I'd love to be able to eat instinctively for true fueling needs and not for all the wrong reasons (clock, preventative, emotional, etc.)!!

Heidi, do you think you're getting enough sleep??

I really think my problem is more calories than my body really wants, but I'd have to track very closely and accurately to figure out what level kept me fueled and not hostile with hunger... LOL Connie, I have wanted to use the 'here's your sign' comment so many times, but it really loses impact after you have to explain it to the slack-jawed "huh?" response!

For some reason as I was reading your post I thought about coritsol. Isn't that a hormone that has to do with stress and or not getting enough sleep. You might want to read about it and see if there is anything for you about that. Just a sort of out there thought.

Every day I am amazed- we are surrounded by stupid people and I have to just step back and shake my head or I'd be likely to do something stupid!

I'll take a look at the calculator but am not holding out much hope. I'm convinced my metabolism has shut down or at the very least is running v e r y s l o w l y. I'm convinced it has to do with protein- I'm turning it to glucose and it is being stored right around my middle. my muffing top seems to have increased! I haven't gained anything and my legs look pretty good but I feel FAT! So- the "experiment" (love that term) is still under way. I'm not sure I want to keep reading about nutrition or not- seems the more I do the more confused I get.

Leslie - you are so funny "killing stupid people".

I posted a review about a book on insulin resistance under the Book Reviews Sticky Note link that you might find helpful. It basically lays out a formula for the people who are really having issues losing weight such as myself.

Me too, Heidi!! I've finally come to the conclusion that my body truly needs less calories than other people and that while it is definitely happier on LC foods, I will never have the dramatic weight loss that other people do on LC. I am still trying to figure out what calorie range is enough for sustenance but not too much for weight loss. I'm just a big ol' lab experiment... I've used Joy's calculator link before but it does not give you much variation for physical activity. I think the only way I'll lose weight now that I kind of feel like I have my nutritional balance worked out is to play with volume (calories) until I'm at the point I'm losing weight and don't feel like killing stupid people...

Heidi - maybe you are just on a plateau while your body adjusts.

Here is a link that has a nutritional calculator that I like to use:

Vicki or anyone, do you know, without going through all 92 posts is there a book that will help figure out individual metabolic needs? I am still struggling with trying to figure out what I need- it doesn't seem to matter what I do, still stuck. I dropped carbs didn't budge. Lowered protein, didn't budge. Increased fat, lowered carbs/protein, didn't budge.
