Joy, I was also thinking that it would be really good, if you haven't already, to read "Wheat Bellies." Very eye opening book.

Thanks for the heads up! I am going to check this out! I am doing Atkins, my weight stalled, but the inches still keep coming off, so I'm good with that. Weight is just a number! emoticon emoticon

Faith - your weight loss is fantastic!

I am just soooo frustrated because of my very small weight loss. But that is part of the insulin resistance. So I have cheated once or twice lately due to being a little downhearted. But I am in better spirits now and going back to what worked for me before. I was down to 20 carbs a day the last couple of months, but most of what I was eating was fat. I love fat - cream cheese, cheddar cheese, heavy whipping cream in my decaf. coffee.

But nothing much was happening for me as far as the scale loss. I have lost some inches, but I am also supposed to go back for another blood test in September, so I am feeling a bit rushed to lose something on the scale. I certainly don't want to be put on meds for diabetes. I was given a year to lose the weight and improve my blood sugar tests, but I wasted so many months following the PreDiabetic eating plan, which allows you to eat 150 carbs. I gained weight on that plan.

This book on Insulin Resistance should really help me with keeping my blood sugars leveled out. It says to eat 5 net carbs each time you eat a meal or snack with your protein and fat. And it says to eat a snack of protein and 5 net carb grams before going to bed to keep your blood sugars level while you sleep. I notice if I eat some almonds or a piece of cheese before I go to bed, I stay asleep most of the night. Low blood sugars can wake me up in the middle of the night.

Your body has been through a lot. It's great that you have been taken off the meds.I heard that medications can certainly stall weight loss. I'm sure when your body gets used to it's new normal, the weight will start to come off again. You're right - we will all figure it out as we walk this together!

Sorry I was just curious. That makes sense that you went back to what worked before. I have been on low carb, whoatever you want to call it for over 18 months now and have lost close to 90 pounds. I guess is is Atkins but I do not purposely add more carbs because I seem to be so insulin resistant. I try to keep to 20 or lower. If I up my carbs my weight immediately goes up. I have sort of been at a stall or at least a creep this year but at least I am maintaining and actually I think losing inches if not pounds. I have also been going through breast cancer treatments. Radiation and meds. I am now off the meds and I hope that my body will cooperate now and that my weight loss will continue. I still want to lose another 80-100 pounds. Good luck to you on this journey. We will all figure it out as we walk this together!

Hi there - if you looked at today's lunch - yeah - I blew it. I went out to Mimi's Café for lunch, and I only ate 1/4 of their apple struesel muffin. Didn't realize exactly how many carbs it was until I recorded it.

And lately, I have gone back to how I ate while I was doing Slim4life. I purchased some of their protein bars and snacks, which I noticed are a little higher in total carbs, but the fiber takes it down a bit.

I started Atkins 2 months ago, and lost about 3 pounds after 2 weeks of Induction. I have been losing and gaining the same 2 pounds for the last 60 days. So a few days ago, I went back to what worked for me before, which was the way Slim4life taught me to eat. They had me at about 60 total carbs - but it nets out lower, probably between 35 or 40 net carbs. They let you eat two starches a day, and it could be 45 calorie diet bread. So that is probably where you are seeing some bread intake in the mornings.

I really believe that the cheese and the dairy I was allowed on Atkins was stalling me. Slim4life is much lower fat intake while you are losing. Your body is using fat for fuel, but it has to burn the fat you are intaking before it will burn the fat on your body.

I'm sure I will be one of those people who need to stay under 50 net carbs a day forever.

One thing I know for sure is that everyone's body is not the same. What works one person will not work for another. But the main thing is that they are all low carb ways of eating. But I can't see doing Atkins without the cream, butter and cheese, which is the stuff I liked to eat.

Have you had success on Atkins or are you doing another plan?

I am currently fighting insulin resistance, so I went to the library to check out some books on the subject. I'm a speed reader since I was a kid so I have already gone through 3 of the books. One that really made an impression on me is The Metabolism Miracle by Diane Kress, RD, CDE. 2009 Edition (I'm guessing that RD stands for Registered Dietician - have no idea what CDE stands for.

Anyway, it's written by someone who developed insulin resistance herself. She knows how hard it is to get any weight off. It's a lowcarb plan with 3 steps. All lowcarbs are similar to Atkins. But this one really basically tells you how to eat, what to eat and has some 5 carb recipes in the back. 3 meals, 2 snacks and 5 carbs (net) at each feeding when you are in step one. Easy, simple knowledge.

Step two ups it between 10 - 20 net carbs at each feeding.

Haven't tried it yet, but will attempt it tomorrow. I really like the way it is written - kind of like a Carbs for Dummies book. (Is there a book out there with that name?)

Anyway, you can check it out at the library (my library name is Mid-Continent) for free or it is available on Amazon and eBay. Of course, she has another later book for Diabetics and Prediabetics and she has a Cookbook.

Just thought I would throw it out there - maybe someone here already knows about it and can offer some insights to us.
