I just eat meat, fat, and eggs. That works for me. I can eat dairy with no side effects, but I just do not like it enough to be bothered. Start with a basic plan of twenty carbs. All carbs from vegetables. Add in new things, but only once a week. Then you can tell if a food will be ok for you or not.

While it is not necessary to have carbs, I had issues when I ate 10g a day. I would lose 2-3 lbs a day, and have diarrhea all the time to lose that quickly. This isn't a bad thing. I find I can lose while eating 75 net carbs a day. This allows me more variety. For others, they would have to stay lower. It varies for each individual. I actually have to make sure I eat enough good carbs to only lose 1-3 lbs a week. If I lose 10 lbs. a week, I feel terrible, and cheat to make that feeling go away.

If you aren't losing more than 2-3 lbs a week though, then you aren't consuming too few carbs. One of the great things about low carb is that you lose enough weight to keep you motivated.

I agree with everybody, lol. I was losing just fine (albeit slowly) when eating the Atkins way the last month (or other times I've done it). This last week, since my NP has be doing this "Anti-Inflammatory Diet", even though my carbs are still close to 20, and my calories are the same, without dairy and beef/pork, my fat level has been lower, and I have GAINED weight. Totally not in ketosis at all anymore, I can tell. So for me, I think I need dairy... if not for weight loss, then at least for my happiness. Eating has been BORING this last week!

This is definitely all about trial and error. Like Woubbie said, it's basically about taking the basics and building a plan around that that works for YOU. I have definitely figured things out as I've gone along. But the bottom line is, we know we're doing something good for our bodies by not taking in all those processed foods! I love this way of life!

Nope it's not possible to have too few carbs! Some have 0!!

I agree with Woubbie.

I myself have to experiment- I wondered- could I get away with tasting this? as I made my kid's high carb dinner. And when my weight stayed the same I thought should I add more of meat even if I'm not hungry? Should I stop dairy?

I found out I can't eat dairy, I get too many cravings. I can have more heavy whipped cream than they suggest. And I can add a few more carbs over 20 and lose if I eat LC/high fat foods.

Each week is an experiment for me. But I quit stressing over it. I have not lost weight in over 2 weeks and I don't even care why, because I see this Monday I will weigh and chart a loss!

Heidi - your ratios seem really good. As for having too few carbs - I don't know the correct answer for that. Maybe someone else on this team can tell us both that one.

I'm thinking I'll stick with him myself. I like dairy and it doesn't seem to bother me any. I do have a problem with too much meat but I can break that up with salmon & halibut, the odd crab and shrimp, plus chicken and my fave- fatty pork! I Cutting the starch isn't too hard, there are a few things I miss but I don't crave them. I suppose I can experiment with upping fat and lowering protein and see if it makes a difference. I thought about the fat fast but even for 3 days I don't think I could give up eating- I'm a chow hound and 2 hounces creamcheese (even with chives) or a handful of nuts just wouldn't do it for me.

Is it possible to have to few carbs?

I can lose on dairy, so I am definitely leaving that in. Love butter, cream in my coffee and cheese. Cheese has such a stabilizing affect on my blood sugars. For the last 3 weeks, I have had no low blood sugar episodes. So grateful for that alone - I hate it when my lower lip goes numb on me.

You are right - I was driving myself crazy with all the different low carb experts a few weeks ago, so I went back to my old Atkins book from 2002 and looked up insulin resistance. I'm done - I am just sticking with the old master himself, Dr. Atkins.

Yup. What you're seeing is another example of the complexity of the human animal. Any and all of those recommendations will work for SOMEONE. Hell, eating nothing but meatballs and spaghetti will work for SOMEONE. The long-term challenge is to take the basic data (protein + fat = good; carbohydrate from anything besides veg = some shade of probably not good) and plug it into your own equation and test what works. And beyond just testing what works you need to test what you can tolerate. We're all in it "for the duration" it seems!

I just got done reading the Johnny Bowden book, Living Low Carb. I've read The New Atkins for a New You, and just purchased Good Calories, Bad Calories and put Wheat Belly on my list but am almost afraid to read any more because of all the info- it's too much; high protein, mid protein. Personally I'm going to try and back off a bit because I think I'm getting too much, although my ratios seem pretty good 70-85% fat, 5-7% carbs and the balance protein. Dairy yes! Dairy no...Does anyone else get confused by all this?
