It's a huge team, I'm not sure how many people are active. So far many people seemed to be nice, but there was also some misinformation. Why don't you take a look and do some reading before deciding if you want to join? emoticon

Maybe it was a different team then. The one I am a member of is the "Managing Diabetes" team.

It was 6/7. I was doing the diabetes 8 week challenge Team. NANCYPAT1 was very kind to me and apologized for them to me. And my friend Tatter3 was very kind from that group too. There are really nice people there. But the negative comments had gradually been building, a few expressing serious concern over LC. I was crushed that day.
I also blogged about it on 6/7.

I was mostly trying to get the unsuccessful people to join an LC team, and give it a try. A couple did. :o)

Eliz,
I've been on the diabetic team for a while and while some people tend to not understand or be willing to try low-carb I have not had anybody be rude. How long ago was this?
I also know that there are several members from the low-carb team that are also part of the diabetes team as well and will occasional post low-carb stuff there.
I'll have to go and look if I can find any of the threads you are talking about. I thought I was being notified when they start new topics so this may have been on older topics?
In any case, people with diabetes and pre-diabetes need to hear the low-carb message more than anybody. They can of course choose to do what they want with the info but I make a point and say what I think over there and so do several other people.

That was the problem Joy! They weren't losing any weight, I felt so bad for them! One gal from there who doesn't LC felt bad for how they attacked me. We are still friends.

NOWYOUDIDIT - Good for you for leaving such a toxic environment!

They may just be in denial. I can't believe they are having much weight loss success on that horrible diabetic nutritional plan. Maybe they were a little jealous of your weight loss results.

It was shocking how rude they were. I shared that LC worked for me and they went into a rant about how it almost killed people and destroyed lives. I told them I had to leave such a mean spirited team. I was there 6 weeks happily posting my successes and sharing my secret LC. I gave no food recommendations, just said low carb. So now I'm only on LC teams!

NOWYOUDIDIT - glad you let us know of the response you had from the Diabetic SparkTeam because I have had the fleeting thought of posting on the Prediabetic SparkTeam about my lowcarbing.

I am so shocked by how many people join the Prediabetic team. I am still subscribed to this team, so I am notified by email when they have a new member join. And I find it so sad everytime a new member joins that team. I participated on that team earlier in the year, and they use the Diabetic Meal Planner, which is all low fat and high on carbs. It's almost like they are being told how to become diabetic. Scary. Naturally, after two months of eating this way and exercising, I had gained weight and lost precious time. That's when I found this group. I consider myself very fortunate because this team is so knowledgeable and supportive.

that's awful, NowYouDidIt. My hubby is diabetic and I had him eating low carb for a while and he was doing great. Then his nutritionist told him not to. Sigh. This was 10 years ago, though, now he's just not really interested in doing it with me.

I'm not brave enough to do that! :o) On the diabetes team here they started saying mean things to me every time I posted about my blood sugar success and eating LC. It got to the point I had to leave, telling them I never criticized "their" diets.
Oh well.

It is interesting to hear you all talking about getting the word out, what kind of shows there are, etc. I find that I really have to watch myself from "witnessing" too much to people and driving them nuts. I feel so incredible and wonderful, my body has responded so well to eating this way, I want everyone to know that they can feel this good, too! When people, especially in my family, are eating something full of carbs I want to say "stop, don't put that poison in your body!"

An acquaintance of mine wrote "The Neanderthal Diet" and had about 15 minutes of fame a few years back. No one wanted to be near him at parties because he'd stand by the buffet and tell everybody how everything on the table was going to kill them. I don't want to turn into him!! LOL.

Eliz,
I would be curious what the long-term results of a low-carb or paleo diet are on MS. I read the story about Terry Wahls, who had huge improvements in her MS after switching to a paleo diet. I just don't know how common it is to see the results, but they are so encouraging.
Here is the link to where she is interviewed by Jimmy Moore:

Birgit I have MS, (relapsing remitting) and with the fluid loss and inflammation gone from fluid retention; at this I have no pain- and my balance is better right now. However last time I got nearer to goal my balance fell off for a short period until I adjusted to being smaller. All in all losing last time was on WW with high-high carbs and I never lost the pain. People don't think there is pain with MS- there is. Much of it you "get used to", but when you have less you know!!

Joy,
there is so much info out there now, I feel totally ovewhelmed, LOL, I feel lucky that I learned the basics before it was quite as hard to decide who all to follow.
My favorite right now are Jimmy Moore and Peter Attia, Jimmy because he talks to so many different people and you can read summaries about what they think, Peter Attia because he's a brilliant thinker and understands the big picture and how to shape it. But frankly, it takes all of us to get the low-carb/paleo message to a much wider audience. I had a chance to talk to a lady yesterday who suffers from multiple sclerosis and she's had some improvement on vegan, but might benefit so much more from low-carb/paleo.
Taking the time to pass on what we know on the net and with the real people around us is powerful because it grows understanding exponentially, not just by addition or multiplication. That's what it takes to make this country (and the world) healthy.
My results are fairly moderate for someone on low-carb but I'm getting a lot of comments everywhere, from my doctor's office, coffee shop, personal trainer (who has not looked at diet much) about my health, looks, even my daughter's friends have given me positive feedback.
We can all be role models that people want to learn from in small ways. emoticon

Sheltie - I'm with you - I would love to see a show about insulin resistant people and how they get the weight off and their recipes.

Birgit - What you posted is so true - we are all like Dr. Atkins - researching, testing, and trudging onwards against what everyone else tells us is the recommended way to eat and exercise. Aren't we a bunch of strong and independent individuals?

Lately, I have been enjoying listening to talk radio with Jimmy Moore (Livin La Vida Lowcarb guy) and Dana Carpendar has a talk show also. I download their shows - which are free - from iTunes and listen to them in my car while running errands. Very informative and encouraging.

George Stella used to have a show. I'm not sure if it is still on or not. I wasn't low carb then but I remember seeing it.

I also think it may be like fashion or what people can make money off of. The LC pendulum may swing back. Let's hope so and perhaps saggin' pants can go away! Those have been in fashion way too long (says the mom of a teenager!)

I am starting my ticker again since starting low carb....in the home strech!

I have a different explanation: Low-carb/paleo people for the most part think for themselves and don't follow conventional wisdom. They rely on well-researched books, articles, blogs and conferences for their info, that are put on by reputable professionals, not on popular magazines and TV shows. emoticon

That's true that Chris's show does carb-cycling, but they don't highlight this on the show. I always thought the carb cycling would cause too much hunger.

I guess all of these plans are lower carb relative to an Ornish plan, but they still seem to really limit fats and promote "healthy whole grains." I know some people can loose weight without having to be so restrictive.

It would be great to see a show where people seem to be metabolically resistant to losing weight. They seem to pick people who eat bags of chips in front of the TV and don't even walk around the block so they get the most dramatic weight loss.

Years back my daughter and I watched a Low Carb diet show on Food network. But nothing since :o( More support would be great!

Yes I heard on Dr Oz about the LC eating too on Biggest Loser too, and I was surprised!!
I had the Biggest Loser cookbook but it said nothing.
That would explain those consistently high losses!

The subjects on Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition eat low carb, sort of. They cycle between one day of traditional restricted calorie diet and a day resembling South Beach.
You don't hear about this on the show. I learned this when Chris Powell appeared on Dr. Oz.

I think that the term "low carb" is too broad - it can mean too many different things to too many different people and even the people who are eating low carb! I have eaten LC for many years - first in a South Beachy kind of way, and then I cut out wheat and corn, and now I eat Paleo with minimal fruit. All of those variations could be considered low carb, but it's still a pretty broad group to stick on a cruise together! LOL

Hi all,

While there are TV shows that promote conventional wisdom (Extreme Weight Loss, Biggest Loser), have there been any shows highlighting successful weight loss with low carb? Also, all of the weight loss camps all seem to be pretty traditional as well. Do you think that it's time yet for a low carb comeback or too soon?

I know there is the low-carb cruise in May that gets about 300 people and several paleo conventions. I feel like the paleo folks are ramping up a lot faster than the low carb groups are (granted, I try and eat paleo, but it's not the same thing, obviously).

Thanks,
Sheltiefuzz
