Well, RUSSELL_39, it may not happen for me. I've been on cholesterol (statin only) drugs for over 17 years, since age 42! Hereditary factors in having drug-remediable-only hyperlipidemia and dyslipidemia, with subterranean HDLs (in my case) contributed to developing sudden-onset relatively severe Type 2 diabetes. Four of my siblings - on statin drugs ... !

But, I became (again) a true omnivore today ...still low carbing, but NO form of animal protein is off limits (and nearly no carbs, for that matter - just have to have ANY of 'em in trace amounts!) it's great to be back "home"!

Interested in your experience with diabetes, and cholesterol on low carb. I got off all meds for both issues, and my A1C is 5.3, and my cholesterol is 104. This, after struggling for 7 years on a " diabetic " diet.

Now I just have to worry about low blood sugars.

Just to clarify: coconut water is the liquid inside the coconut. It is very tasty to me if nothing is added. Coconut milk is made from dried coconut meat and it comes in full-fat and low-fat varieties. The kind that is used as dairy replacement has little or not fat in it which makes it thinner and, in my opinion, less tasty.
Coconut oil is the most saturated fat there is, much more than meat. It is a very healthy fat in it's raw (unprocessed) form. It is easier to digest than many other fats which is why it is often added to infant formula. Saturated fat in general is very healthy. This includes butter, fat on meat and dairy.
Many polyunsaturated fats are bad for us. The reason is in part that they go rancid very rapidly, particularly when stored outside the fridge or heated for cooking.

Coconut water does not taste so good. Coconut "milk" (from the coconut, not the processed dairy substitute), otoh, I could wrap myself around.

Coconut is a kind of saturated vegetable fat.

I wonder if it's any healthier than saturated animal fats.

I really liked my deli-sliced eye round roast this afternoon ... mmmmmmm ... it seems to give me lasting energy ...

How about coconut, Tina? Can you/will you eat that? It's very good for you and is vegan/vegetarian. I use coconut milk when cream is called for, cook in coconut oil instead of butter. It might be a way for you to get in some healthy fats.

I agree the video left some things to be desired. If I understood it correctly, when they did the study to see if fat suppressed appetite, they were feeding the people carbohydrates along with it? That won't work. They never addressed the high blood sugar/insulin thing at all.

I agree Birgit about that video having some misleading information. I am sort of mentoring a friend in the HFLC WOE and have been sending her lots of info but decided against sending that to her because of some of the mis-conclusions in the video. Still too biased for my liking.

Today, it is going to be lamb chop. Extremely well-done lamb chop. I really think I cannot eat fat.

For the record, I could smell the consumed beef coming out of my pores. Too much food police influence over the years. emoticon

I felt my heart beating strongly in my chest as I'd gone to sleep, and I awoke a bit fatigued.

But I think that's the diabetes.symptoms, and does not mean this diet does not work. Just that it may work in a more complicated fashion.

Edit:

In fact, it is. Remarkable on normalizing weight, my blood sugar had a characteristic rise even with animal protein of this nature. It is too early to tell.

Yes, most societies on Earth consider low-carbing a "fringe" lifestyle.

What I find interesting is that there has been low carb "diets" for many many years, even before Atkins came into the picture. (I was put on a low carb diet back in the early 60's even, but it was also low fat). Yet, they say they need to "wait and see" how long term results are. Seems like Atkins first book came out in the early 70's, that's over 40 years ago. How long do they need??

Yet, they'll put a new medicine/prescription on the market without that much testing and give it to people and worry about the side effects later on... Many of which are quite serious...

I personally think one of the reasons a lot of people don't stick with the Atkins or another VLC diet is because unless you're real inventive, you can get tired of the food limitations and all the media shows all this other carb laden foods to eat. Also the fact that the LC people are fighting prejudice all of the time against them. I know I've had problems myself... sometimes one just caves...

I'm looking forward to watching this.
As far as meat, I don't like the taste of fatty meat, but I do like to cook it in lots of butter or coconut oil. As long as you get a lot of saturated fat your good. It does not cause heart disease at all. Only inflammation does, and that is brought on by eating too many carbs primarily.

Birgit

P.S. I just finished the whole video, and unfortunately there are some misrepresentations about the Atkins diet, primarily that it is high protein rather than high fat. The video is still worth watching, but also somewhat misleading.

Dr. Atkins was an overweight cardiologist. He wanted to lose weight, and that is when he started his own diet. It worked so well, he started using it with his obese patients. His patients were surprised when their cholesterol numbers did better after eating the red meat and fat.

I posted this link earlier in the day, but you might find it very interesting as far as your health issues:

Just an interesting BBC documentary on Atkins.

I did it. I finally had roast beef (or any non-fish, non-poultry animal protein) for the first time in 10 years.

At first it felt weird, maybe I thought I'd get sick (I don't know), and then it tasted delicious.

I've been managing my diabetes, but I'd thought I could not get a handle on maintenance AT ALL. I'd lowered my weight goal twice, and nothing works to maintain my weight. I, a low carber, am eager to regain to goal.

I figure this must be the only way. Even though I've been a cholesterol patient for over a decade and a half. I do not intend to eat the fatty parts of meat. I have upped my calorie count slightly so far and am willing to go a little higher. But it can't be soy protein. Soy protein plays havoc with my sugars if over-relied upon.

What's for dinner:
