Actually my 1992 version said net carbs = carbohydrates - fiber & glycerine
My 2004 version of Atkins Essentials included subtracting sugar alcohols, but I find that if I eat any sugar alcohols, I stall immediately.
I would avoid sugar alcohols, and treat them like a carb that you can add in later. Eat real food till you have the hang of Atkins, and then after you get to OWL, or Pre-Maintenance try out sugar alcohols, the way you would when adding beans. Try them, and if they cause a stall, avoid them after that. You need to be losing steadily though, before you can test any of these foods out.
