I think this may help you. Package foods don't have to put the carb amount on the package if the food serving size has .5 or less carbs in it. they can round down. They can also round up if the food serving size had at least a .6 carb amount in it. This is why some cheeses say 0 carbs and others say 1 or 2 carbs per serving (all cheese has some carb number in no carb number its at least a .5). Egg is another food I cant think of, right off hand that does this. Eggs have .4 or .6 or .8 carbs depending on the size and kind of egg.

If a food has any form of hidden sugar in it, it has at least a .4 or .5 carb in it. This is the same for items that contain milk such as cheese.

If you count NET carbs you will have to figure the net carbs for all the foods you eat but Atkins foods (Atkins puts it on the box). You subtract the sugar alcohols and the fiber in the food item to get your NET carb number.

I count TOTAL carbs for more than one reason. There is a link below that you can click on and watch a video where the Dr Westman that wrote the New Atkins for a New You book tell how he teaches to do the program in his office. You need to watch it ALL to the very end. This will help you decided on how you want to count your carbs.

I want to say I know this seems hard right now but hang in there you will figure it all out with time. You will learn how you want to count things as to what you find that works for you...some don't count eggs at all but I do(my choice) I count a large egg as 1 total carb.

This is the link to the Atkins website. even tho I dont fully do it the atkins way anymore I do still eat from the atkins food list/eat. I just count carbs different than they do.

Actually my 1992 version said net carbs = carbohydrates - fiber & glycerine

My 2004 version of Atkins Essentials included subtracting sugar alcohols, but I find that if I eat any sugar alcohols, I stall immediately.

I would avoid sugar alcohols, and treat them like a carb that you can add in later. Eat real food till you have the hang of Atkins, and then after you get to OWL, or Pre-Maintenance try out sugar alcohols, the way you would when adding beans. Try them, and if they cause a stall, avoid them after that. You need to be losing steadily though, before you can test any of these foods out.

I haven't read the New Atkins, but the previous versions said use net carbs, and both fiber and sugar alcohols were subtracted to get NC. A lot of people (myself included) count half the grams of sugar alcohol as net carbs. Atkins didn't count them because they are metabolized slowly and don't spike the blood sugar, but they ARE metabolized as carb. If you're very sensitive to carbs, it could make a difference.

BTW, go with atkins for the cheese carbs. If it's less than half a gram, they don't have to list it on the nutrition label.

I do net carbs, but I use the total - the fiber to get net carbs, not what is printed on the front of the food. Many times they don't count sugar alcohols. Atkins Advantage choc chip cookie dough bars are a great example. They say they are 2-3 net carbs, and have 29 g of carbs, and 11 grams of fiber. I would count it as 18 g of net carbs, if I was ever foolish enough to eat one.

That is what Atkins said you should do in his earlier books to get net carbs, and it has served me well the past 4 years.

I stick with total carbs now. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Dr. Atkins also said to do total carbs. I have gone back to my older Atkins book from 1999, which was written by Atkins himself. I think the newer Atkins books are too lenient. Obviously, if a person needs to do Atkins to lose any weight, they are carb sensitive. Which I am.

I lose better if I count all carbs. When I start counting only net, I also have to pay attention to calories.

I do the opposite. I go by what the package says. If say a piece of cheese says 2g of Carbs, then I go by that, but I have found cheese with zero carbs. However, if you are a candy lover, and pick up some Russell Stover's SF candy, this is different. #1...you should NOT eat these on induction!!! However, when you CAN have some, then on the package it will say maybe 26g of Carbs, 3g of fiber, and 21g of Sugar Alcohols. All of which can 'supposedly' be deducted from the 26g of carbs...making the NET carbs of 2g for 3 pieces of candy. These are delicious, btw. lol BUT, some people have trouble with the sugar alcohol..meaning that their bodies will 'think' it is having sugar. This not good. General rule of thumb on those is that to play it safe, you should count at least half of the 'sugar alcohols' into the NET result. Just thought I'd throw this 'net' issue into the mix here.

Like I said though, most of the time go by the 'net' carbs on the package of food. I will, however, check the Atkins Book for certain foods and their carbs before I go to the store. If the net is 'close', then I go by what the package says. But...that's me!

I am on day 2 of the new Atkins for a new you. Is it better to go off the net carbs as is listed in the book or what is listed on the actual product? for example: for 1 oz of ceddar cheese the books says it is 0.4 net carbs while if I look on the package of cheese it says there are 0 carbs which would mean 0 net carbs.
