I take loads of supplements. Some were prescribed by our endocrinologist, others I take after researching their value for me, individually.

As was already mentioned, be VERY cautious with the fat soluble vitamins: A, D, E, K. They can build up to unhealthy levels. As was also mentioned, testing your blood for Vitamin D will help you regulate how much you need. In my case, I was prescribed a ridiculously high dose - which I've since increased (due to lab reports) - and my supplemental megadose of D has only just recently put my values in the lab's reference ("normal") range.

My Tracker is shared, and all my meds and supplements are listed there. I make sure all my various healthcare people have copies of all the things I take (not every "drug" interaction is limited to medications!). So far none of them have objected to my regime. You could peruse my list and do your own research as to whether any of it would be useful or applicable for your use. But please do that research! don't just adopt something blindly. Some of the things I take are for specific health issues pertinent just to myself!

I would like to be able to eat the necessary foods so that I wouldn't need to take any kind of a vitamin, but at this point, I don't even know where to start. Fruits and veggies, fish and meats, etc. Wouldn't do the grains or sugars (except what's in fruit).

In the meantime, guess I'll just stay as I am and do what I've been doing.

Concerning the Vitamin D, I agree that it is dangerous to take too much. But there is a simple blood test that will tell what our levels are. My doctor said for people who live in northern climates and have not had the blood test that 2000 IU is a safe level, even with lots of sun exposure. I am outside at least 6 hours/day and still was low enough to need 5000 IU in the winter, 2000-3000 IU in the summer.

I have not saw anything about vitamins and cancer. That is a new one for me. I will try to check out the link later on,don't have the time right now.

I may add some C to mine I use to take that all the time, don't know why I stopped.

Have yall saw all the different gummy vitamins they have out not? look out tho for they have carbs in them.

This is the link to the Atkins website. even tho I dont fully do it the atkins way anymore I do still eat from the atkins food list/eat. I just count carbs different than they do.

In the NYTimes article I noticed that most of the vitamins that were mentioned in the studies were the fat soluble* ones, which I was always told to avoid super-supplementing unless you were prescribed them for a deficiency: A and beta carotene, E and D.

B and C are water soluble and are largely flushed from the system when not needed.

Selenium, however, is toxic at high doses.

It sounds like, again, it's a matter of balance. High levels of free radicals in the body are dangerous and may encourage the formation of cancerous cells, but low levels are also dangerous because free radicals are required by the body to kill bacteria.

I worry these days about all the Vitamin D supplementation going on as well. They're also fat-soluble, and you can build up toxic levels in your system. You're better off foregoing the sunscreen unless you plan to be out in the sun for a long time, and just letting your body make the D that it needs.

C is a tough call. We're one of the few mammals who can't make it internally like D, so the small amount we need has to come from our food. However, if you're not eating refined white crap that drives up your internal inflammation levels, you don't really need very much. Suzanne, for instance, is obviously getting enough Vitamin C from just meat, or she would be developing scurvy.

One of the reasons we probably don't need a whole lot of C is that we make a different anti-oxidant vitamin internally - uric acid.

Uric acid gets a lot of bad press these days, because it it becomes crystalline it causes the acute pain of gout. Ironically, it's likely that the buildup of uric acid is driven by inflammation, which is likely driven by diet. Newer studies are linking high fructose intake to gout flares.

Hi Teresa! I take Biotin to promote hair growth and stronger nails. I too have noticed a difference in my nails not so much my hair. I was taking a biotin supplement that had other minerals and vitamins but now I am looking at just taking 5000 mcg of Biotin alone. My SIL started that supplement and said to take half of it for awhile and move up to the full 5000 mcg but it could depend upon that person.

It would be interesting to look at the actual studies, but I don't have the time. I suspect that these studies were using therapeutic doses that may have been many times higher than what is in a multivitamin or what would be found in nature. Even plain water is toxic at too high a level, the same for other essential nutrients. In some cases it may be better to supplement a little, but be careful wit megadoses, even Vitamin C.

Here is an NYTimes article summarizing it:

I lost a lot of weight and maintained it for years, then I got all stressed and busy and lost my way. Starting over from a much better place (way less to lose this time!) and making things better.

Most of the studies out there lately are finding that mulitvitamins significantly increase the risk of death IF you are at high risk for cancer. this includes long-time smokers, people who have had cancer recently or people who have lots of family members with cancer. This is not the typical doctors-say-it-so-it-must-be-true thinking but actual, well-planned studies following actual outcomes. So very many studies are designed to be biased one way or another....I don't see that happening here. Quite the contrary, my judgement is that the people running the vitamin-cancer studies were expecting the opposite result and were competent enough to actually admit when the results contradicted their expectations.

I think that fish oil has not been included in these studies. One thing I will note about fish oil....if you choose to supplement with fish oil, make sure it is fresh and is kept in a glass bottle in the refrigerator or you are probably eating rancid fish oil that does more harm that any good it could possibly do.

Is there a lot of cancer in my family? Yes. Do I take vitamin supplements? No, and damn no. I get my vitamins from the foods I eat.

I always think of them as hedging my bets. I don't know if most of the them are doing much good or not, but they're generally not considered to do much harm either. The ones I DO think make a difference for me are C and B Complex, so I take those even when I don't take anything else.

Teresa, you asked what Biotin was for, you know - I'm not real sure what all it's supposed to do, I started taking it when my dr. 'suggested" it might help brittle finger nails and thinning hair (from general aging, no other specific reason) - I can't tell you it's helped, although my fingernails seem to be in better shape than they used to be, but some of that could be just because I retired and don't do the kind of work I did that was really hard on hands and nails..
My multi vitamin has some in it, but not so much.

I don't have any easy answers concerning vitamins but know that some vitamins are much better absorbed from food, while others can be absorbed well from pills. The reason I take Vitamin D is because it is almost impossible to get enough from real food and while our body can make a lot if we are outside most of the day, in northern climates even that is rarely enough.

yes it is confusing. I don't really mind the vitamins for they are just one time a day but I have other meds that I can't take within two hours of them that I take 3 times a day. I wish there was a way to know which ones we really need to take.

What is biotin for? I know its in my one a day vitamins but I dont know the % that is in it. I got the extra magnesium because there was only 13% in the one a day and that seemed kind of low to me, being that we may or may not need it to burn the fat off...lol who knows?

I have saw on tv where they say vitamins do little to help us then I see where they do a lot I guess that is one reason I waited to start taking them.

It gets so confusing about vitamins and supplements to take or not take, doesn't it??

I take a multi vitamin, (Centrum Silver), biotin, potassium (leg cramps), magnesium (?-because someone said so I guess). Fish oil capsules (may stop those and make sure to eat more fish). And baby aspirin. I hate taking all these pills and really have my doubts as to what they do.

It seems everything you see and/or read is contradictory and controversal as well - beyond a daily multi vitamin - and even that sometimes too. Sometimes I feel like just not taking anything at all.

Some types of magnesium work as a laxative, esp. magnesium citrate, other types are not well absorbed. I have had good luck with slow-mag, available at Walmart and with magnesium glycinate.

When i started atkins the book said to take them,I just never added them because I already take so many pills each day for my acid reflux and breathing. I was going over what I was and was not doing to see why I maybe stalled and decided to add the vitamins.

I am happy to see that others do take them that eat low carb. I was just wondering if there was any others that I may need to add.

Teresa - Glad your stall is over with!

I have always taken a good multivitamin and fish oils - even when the medical community said it wasn't good for you.

I recently bought the magnesium, but just haven't added it to my routine yet.

Do you take vitamins if so what do you take. I have took fish oil for abut 2 months now. Last week I started taking One A Day Women's Petites and because the magnesium was only 13% in that I picked up a bottle of calcium, magnesium and zinc(same bottle) and B12 2500mcg sublingual for metabolism support.(all walmart brands)
I have not changed the way I eat in like two weeks or so only added the vitamins and this morning I am down 3 pounds this week already. I don't know if the vitamins have anything to do with it or not but I was just wondering if any of you take any kind of vitamins. I added the extra bottle with magnesium because I read somewhere that when you are on low carb that your body needs the magnesium to burn fat. Now I don't know if any of that is true other than i am down after adding them. It could be tho that it was just time for my stall to be over with, how knows.
