Thank you all for your replies. I really appreciate it.

Whatever I'm doing is working b/c I'm down almost 2lbs since this past Friday, so I'm not gonna sweat the small stuff. Different levels of carbs work for different people. I think b/c I was eating SO many carbs that now that I've so drastically cut them, I'm gonna lose weight. :)

I think the question is similar to whether an ex-smoker can have one puff of a cigarette.
Probably, unless they quit recently, but they may find they don't want to any more.
My daughter had a birthday party yesterday and opted for a gluten-free but high-carb/sugar cake. So I decided to put my low-carb eating to the test and had a fairly substantial piece yesterday and another one tonight. Yesterday I ate it midday and was quite hungry at the time and it was enjoyable, but no cravings. Today I had one for dessert and it felt uncomfortably sweet. I did finish it but had a bowl of plain yogurt with some raspberries afterwards to "neuralize" the sweetness that was overwhelming.
I know that even after 6 months on low-carb I would have gotten carb cravings from doing this. Now I can do it very rarely, but don't usually feel the need to.

Daisy sour cream don't say it has add sugar, so you may want to try that brand....also Great value brand ranch dressing has only 1 carb per 2tbs so you may want to look for that brand or check the other brands that your store has.

Sour cream is not listed in the foods for induction, because like ricotta (oh, marvelous, luscious, tasty ricotta!) it has more carbs than other dairy options that are listed for induction. As pointed out by Frogman2013, in induction your carbs are intended to be not much more than the foundation veggies, some salad dressing, and cheese.

That said, there are numerous caveats in the New Atkins book that there may be reasons you'll start in a stage other than induction. The one point they seem to hold firm too is that if you're eating a food from OWL, then you're in OWL, not induction.

Sticking as closely as you can to the elements of induction is intended to get us through the metabolic transition to nutritional ketosis as rapidly as possible, and as a benefit provide the motivation of rapid weight loss. Moving on to OWL is intended to reintroduce more foods to keep us interested, and starting to understand how we would continue this way of eating as a permanent change.

I'd say if you've been eating sour cream the whole time and you've lost weight, you're doing something right! Carry On!

1. Stop wasting money- Save money

2. Exercise- do something every day

3. Get organized- mise en place

4. Write a letter by hand at least once a week.

Every day this side of the sod is a good day-
not sure who said it

The best thing to do If you feel the need to know if this amount of sugar is bad for you is to Stop this/these products for a week and see what happens. I eat sour cream, salad dressing and mayo from time to time but not much of it when I do.....I can tell that Duke' mayo don't have sugar if you can find that brand but it does have a type of oil in it that is not on the atkins list of good oils. Dr westman (co wrote the new atkins for new you) says to use Dukes in one of the videos he has online, so I use that kind. I guess cutting the sugar from it is more important then the amount of oil thats in it,IDK

Thank you all so much. I mean I've been using sour cream since I started this, which was May 21st. I had lost 10lbs by June 2nd. I then lost another pound by this past Friday and I was upset that it wasn't more so I started looking at things more closely. However, I am doing something right again b/c just since Friday I am down another pound which totals 12lbs lost since May21st. So I don't think I'm gonna sweat it too much. I don't use that salad dressing all the time and it does only have 1 carb per tbsp b/c it's 2 carbs for 2 tbsp which is the serving size. :)

As far as the meds....I didn't even think to call an 800 number so thanks for that. Lol. I have had a lot going on and my mind is really busy so I haven't thought about some of these things. Thank you all very much for your input! :)

Here is my take on it. During Induction (day one of a new Induction for me!) you only have 20 grams of Net-Carbs to spare. If you spend one of those on added sugar, then that means you have to avoid one gram on healthier foods. During Induction, you are already stretching the limits of what is healthy in terms of nutrients and fiber, so you really don't have that one gram to give away. I also consider the Induction as a way to kick start your healthy living and a way to help get a sweet tooth under control. Your call on this! Most people only do Induction for two weeks. Then things lighten up a little.

That said, some people can totally get away with wiggle room on sugars. For some of us, that one gram is going to drive more hunger and cravings while some other person can skip all this Induction stuff and do fine losing weight by going straight to Phase 3. Now, for example, I can get away with eating onions, carrots and brussel sprouts without it hurting my plans and those are considered no goes or barely goes on Induction.

I lost a lot of weight and maintained it for years, then I got all stressed and busy and lost my way. Starting over from a much better place (way less to lose this time!) and making things better.

I agree with others that what is in Sour Cream is probably natural not added.

You might want to add a "fat bomb" first thing every morning (If you do nutritional ketogenic) which is teaspoon coconut oil liquid, teaspoon of other oil (I use Hemp or macadamia) and teaspoon lemon juice or apple cider vinegar (organic), small amount of sugar free sweetener.

Just gulp it down first thing in morning. If you don't do high fat then just do coconut oil, vinegar, sweetener. It will balance your tummy acids and help you break down the food. if you need more help then take what you usually do.

type with you later. Junebug

Pepto and antacids are going to have sugar. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to eat them. There are sugar free versions available for diabetics. If you use a lot of them, you might want to check into the diabetic versions.

As Betty said, most foods have some natural sugars in them. What you don't want is to eat anything with added sugars. These would include dextrose, glucose, and anything else ending in -ose. Also sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, honey, molasses, pure cane sugar, beet sugar, etc. As far as naturally occurring sugars go, that's why the list of things that you can and can't eat.

While you should steer clear of added sugars, there are likely to be some in any processed food. The best thing would be to avoid them all together, but that isn't always practical. Avoid them as much as you can, and keep them to a minimum if you can't. Commercial salad dressings, for example, are likely to have some sugary type stuff. Keep your carbs to no more than one per tablespoon and you should be fine.

Some "sugars" are natural in products.. doesn't mean added sugars. (1 gram of sugar would be 1/4 tsp). I would guess that the sugar in sour cream would be just because it is a milk product.. A lot of foods are going to have minute amounts of sugars in them..

I would think it would be very very difficult not to have even a gram of sugar throughout a day - and I wouldn't worry about it either. I personally wouldn't obsess about it either, I think if that particular food is listed in the Atkins or whatever program you're using, it has a small enough amount of sugar that you're not going to have issues with it.

As far as Pepto Bismo and Antacids, I can't tell you about sugar in either of those since I don't use them, but I'd bet that the label would have an 800 number on there where you could call and find out about any sugar content. If it doesn't show it in the ingredient list, it's such a wee amount that it's not going to matter unless you use way more than a recommended dosage. If they make you feel better though, sometimes we have to do what we have to do. And if you're using them for indigestion, you may find that stops after you've been eating low carb for awhile. If it's for stomach acid, you can get antacid in pill form, Axid, etc., I think the active ingredient is Rintadine or something like that. You might check with the pharmacist...

Good luck to you.

I don't have an answer for you, sorry. But I have kind of just not sweat stuff like that this time around. Years ago I'd quit because I was so strict with everything and feel frustrated when I couldn't do it. I don't worry about over the counter medicine. If I need it I take it! Just my humble opinion! emoticon

Can you not have even 1 gram of sugar on induction? I've researched online and cannot find a specific answer to this. Like my sour cream has 1 gram of sugar and 2 carbs per 2 tablespoons. Is that not even allowed? I know sour cream is allowed...so it's a bit confusing. I want to make sure I'm doing everything right. My salad dressing is the same...1 gram of sugar and 2 carbs per 2 tablespoons. I looked at the ingredients on both and do not see cane syrup, corn syrup, sugar, etc listed on there, so not sure where it's coming from. But am I safe w/ these foods?

I'd just like to ask my trusted LC friends since I can't find anything specific. I really want YOUR knowledge about this please, b/c as I mentioned before, I've already looked it up and what I found was that you have to look at the label for the sneaky sugars, like corn syrup and the other things I mentioned. But what if you don't see those on the label and it still has a gram of sugar in it? THAT was what I couldn't find an answer to.

Thank you in advance. Also..no one ever answered my question about taking Pepto Bismol or Antacids and if they contain sugars and carbs. I went on Pepto Bismol's site and could not find info. I think the antacids have a few carbs, but it that going to be harmful?

Thank you.
