I have not found any foods that really makes mine worse. The Dr use to say for stay away from spicy food that was the worse thing for it. So I stayed away from it but it did not make any differance in my reflux.

After excluding wheat I only need a Prilosec once or twice a week. I have the same problem as you Teresa. Laying down starts it. I take 1 tum in the night now instead of 2 Prilosec every day. Sometimes cream or tomatoes still cause it. emoticon

Teresa - so sorry to hear about your health issues.

I used to have acid reflux myself. One trick I used was to add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to 8 oz. of water and drink it before bedtime. It actually gave me relief within a couple of minutes. And when my daughter was pregnant, she used this method also.

I try not to eat too much before I go to bed, also.

I was just coming back to add to my post...

I never really had heartburn. My problem was the acid coming up as backwash at night,at least 4 or 5 times a night. Then food was getting hung all the time and I would have to make myself sick to get the hurt to go away. No matter how small or how much I chewed my bites my food would get hung in my chest wall. This was due to esophageal stricture from the damage the acid backwash is.was causing. I was taking 3 pills a day for that but I am down to one pill a day now with no problems of food getting hung up.

The Dr says the acid is still coming up when I sleep and going over into my lungs just not making it all the way up as backwash. I don't really have any problems that I can feel in the day time, silent reflux is what they call what I have.
Th high stomach PH is one reason I have to "go" so much they say. That has got better with my being on low carb tho.


On of the first things we done was out the head of the bed up 6 inches and it still is up.

Th Dr today said that if we can do everything that need to be done that I could maybe be able to get the Lap band in Dec or Jan. I do want it if its going to help with some of my health issues for sure, I am just not king on surgery but I will do it tho to make myself better.

I am on Ranitidine 4x, Metoclopram 4x, Dexilant 1x and Baclofen 1x a day to treat this/these problems. If I miss the Dexilant I pay! So I have learned that I don't miss it ever! I have a list of breathing meds I take everyday also and something for the "go" but it don't help much at all, if I missed that in the pass I could not tell any differance. I get so sick of taking pills I want to get off of some of them and maybe by the first of the year I will be able to do that.

So sorry to hear about your GI distress. I have issues too, mostly related to an esophageal stricture. They say that the acid levels in the stomach aren't the problem: it's the back pressure pushing stomach contents (of any nature) back up that cause the symptoms. I'm on Aciphex and bethanechol, and they seem to help. The biggest help has been dietary changes and sleeping in a semi-upright position. Hope you can find a workable solution!

Wow, that IS high. I was just reading recently that the new thinking about reflux is exactly what you're describing. The stomach is actually not acidic ENOUGH.

I am on three different meds from the stomach Dr for the acid. I have been on so many different ones in the past 5 years that its not funny. These three seem to work well for me. I don't hurt from it anymore and it don't come up as that bad back wash at night while I sleep. Its still spilling over in my lungs and making my breathing worse then it has to be even tho I have asthma. I was just retested for the PH balance and its still a 8.3 out of 10 for the high. My stomach Dr. says I am the highest he has ever had a person to test for on the PH level in the stomach. It has went down from 9 something tho.

You have probably tried this but over the counter generic store brand Pepsid AC works really well for me although I do not have much trouble now that I do low carb eating. It has made a huge difference in my problems with heartburn and acid reflux.

I can not eat within two hours of bed time because of my acid reflux. Its so bad they want me to have surgery for it. My insurance don't pay for the one I really need because there is to many bad side affects to it and it cost major money. My Dr.s have found out that they do pay L-band which would help and for some cure the acid reflux problem,so they are talking about me having that done now. I have hoops to jump threw tho before they will pay for that.

My Dr.s say that would help with two problems, the reflux and my weight which would help with my other health problems in the end.

I do count every morsel of anything I put in my mouth. Other than water, of course. If in doubt, I just overestimate that any mouthful is worth at least 1 carb. Like you mentioned, I am also very carb-sensitive, and when I get up to (and over, alas) 100g/day, I'm simply stuck.

It's got stuff on there you may not find anywhere else, including fast food, restaurant food, and even the folks who refused to state their nutritional info!

And beware: in most cases, when anything on a nutrition label is listed "0," it usually means that the value is less than one for the portion they quote. Nothing is truly "0" anything, IMO.

Just for the record...some of us DO eat lots of eggs! I start nearly every day with 4 large soft-boiled eggs. If they had lots of carbs, I'd do myself in right there! LOL

Ruessel I only have 3oz of country ham at a time. I have to watch my sodium count. So bacon and ham both will put it on up there if I don't watch the amount I have each day. They don't put the carb count on them and they don't have to as long as its under one gm the same as with eggs or anything else that is under one gm. Some places do put it on them and round it on up to the one gm mark but most put 0 instead.

I am pre diabetic but the ham and bacon don't have much affect on my BS numbers. My BS numbers are really good after I eat now that I have been on low carb for 10 weeks but I have to keep the carbs at 20 carbs a day or it will make the numbers go up. The only numbers I have trouble with are my fasting numbers and they are still in the pre diabetic range.

Personally I don't eat bacon or ham. I am a diabetic, who has been off all my pills for 3 years thanks to low carb. So sugar cured foods are on my no-no list. As long as you lose weight while eating them, no problem. Not sure how much carbs are in them though. They should have a label. The ham would be a bigger concern, since your serving will most likely be larger than with bacon.

Eggs are easy. .6 grams per large.. .8 grams per XL . Yes count them. I am around 30 carbs a day now, and eat 5 large eggs, or 4 XL eggs. so about 3 carbs. That is 10% of my total carbs. Not a lot, but if you miss 3 carbs there, and 5 carbs in cured meats ( which may stall you regardless of carb count ), then it could be the difference between weight loss, or gain.

Suzanne doesn't need to count eggs, because she get carbs from the occasional egg, or bit of cheese, and no other carbs...lol. Truthfully the eggs are minimal, but are a part of your diet, that might make a difference if you approach your CCLM. If you aren't moving up in carbs, and just in maintenance, or eating the same range, and losing steadily, I wouldn't worry about things with less than 1 carb as long as it is just a few servings each, and the use of them is also steady. I doubt you will eat a dozen eggs in a sitting, so just watch the ham most of all. If the scale is moving while you are eating bacon and eggs, then it is okay, and if you don't plan to add anything, then as long as the scale is moving in the right direction steadily, just relax, and let it happen. Worrying about it at that point is just tiresome.

The #1 reason for tracking is just to correct mistakes.Seems like a waste of time, till you stall, and need to find out why. If you are going to track at all, then do so as close to perfection as possible. Hopefully you don't need to worry for a while emoticon

Teresa - just saw that I had an email from you in my inbox. I just got done replying to it.

Well, that is exactly what happened to me! I lost 3 pounds during the 2 weeks of Induction, and then I have stalled for about 10 days on my scales. I have lost some more inches, but the scales are just stuck on the same weight. Incredible!

I did much better on the Slim4life, but they were big on protein and they had the carb blockers, also. I have some carbblockers (they are called starchblockers) that I got at the Vitamin Shoppe that are the same thing they use at Slim4life, but half the price. I am tempted to start using them, but I'm not sure what they might do longterm. Who knows, maybe it is the same ingredient they use in some of the Diabetes 2 prescriptions. It's an ingredient called White Bean Extract. Supposed to block carbs from being digested.

In it he says they THINK that fiber carbs don't affect people and weight loss but for some the fiber carbs do and that it needs more studies done on it....he also says that HE teaches the Dr Atkins way as to the Atkins program which means total carbs and less vegys. Now if he has this kind of faith in his own book why did he write it in the first place?

I feel that he is so right about the fiber carbs having a neg affect on people when it comes to weight loss for so many on the website are stalled after the first 2 weeks and asking what they are doing wrong. Some don't lose but like 1 to 3 pounds in the first two weeks then stall.

The butcher told me that all bacon was cured unless you got medlin (i think that what he said it was called) its something like fat back or hog jaw. He should me some and that is what it looks like also. He said that curing it is what makes it bacon.....some say that the low sodium kind has no sugar but I have yet to find it here for even the packaged low sodium has sugar listed on the lable.

I have never worried about eggs. I never eat bacon. If I do, it is not enough for me to worry about. I am sure some bacon is better than others, can't you get some without sugar?

You know in one of dr atkins books he says to change it and make it your own because no two people are the same.He also says its ok to go to 1000 calories a day but those people on the website say NO way no less then like 1500 I think it is they say.

You can also see what the Dr that wrote The new atkins for a new you thinks about his own book right here........he says himself to count total carbs in this video at the end he make its clear that he mean total carbs not net. Anyone doing atkins needs to watch this.

Yeah, Teresa, you're absolutely right. If if says 0g but the ingredients list any form of sugar or starch I'd count 1g. Better to overestimate the amount than underestimate.

I've heard similar complaints about the Atkins site. I like this group way more, since we're all more interested in WHAT WORKS than WHAT THE BOOK SAYS. I mean, we all have enormous respect for Dr. Atkins and his work, but his is not the only true and perfect way, and he would have been the first to admit that.

That's mostly why I like to count them, they contain sugar- so I count carbs for that too because I have type 2 diabetes. I try to eat everything without sugar! or wheat! emoticon

yes they all add up that is why I say to count them ALL but boy I opened a can of worms when I asked this question when I first started in march. This was the atkins website. I find those people are "go" by the book unless its them not wanting to "go" by the book.

what about bacon and country ham how do you guys count those since they are cured with sugar they should have some carb count in them right? I know that package dont have to have the carb amount unless its at least 1 carb so many of them just dont put it if the amount is less then one carb.

If you're tracking your carbs tightly, then one makes a difference. My nutrition site ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/foods/show/111?fg=&ma

says 0.36 for a large egg. I generally eat 3, so that would be one carb.

I count them. They add up. Like my fave cheese sticks are .5 carb each. After 2 that's a whole carb! emoticon

Eggs and cured meats like country ham and bacon? Now some brands of large eggs has the carb number on them but others do not. I count each egg as 1 carb. Then with bacon and country ham being cured with sugar do you count any carbs for those? I found somewhere online that we need to count a a min of .5 for each serving of bacon or country ham that has been cured, so I do.

I got a big oh fuss threw at me about counting the carbs in the eggs because the Egg is suppose to be the perfect food but ant a carb a carb? I was told that a carb in a egg was over turned by all the good a single egg holds and that no one eats that many eggs in a days time that the carb in them would hurt anything. well I eat 2 or 3 with breakfast and sometimes I add a boiled egg to a salad so I eat alot of eggs, I think.
