There is a lot of conflicting advice out there. I agree it comes down to what you are comfortable with and what works for one person may not work for another. I just found it interesting that it takes the same amount of energy to digest the same amount of food, whether consumed in 3 meals or several meals. So no metabolic advantage to eating more frequently. I am experimenting with how often I really need to eat. Yesterday I wasn't hungry between meals and so didn't eat other than at meals except for a small piece of cheese in the evening. But after I let the dog out around 2:30 this morning I couldn't go back to sleep, and finally realized I was really hungry! After I got up and ate a little, I was able to fall back asleep. So maybe I didn't have enough calories during the day, or maybe I should have had a bigger snack in the evening or none at all...I'll just keep experimenting with this.

Good link to read! I am trying to keep my calories down also along with low carbing. I am prediabetic and if I don't snack sometimes, my blood sugar dips too low. Trying to spread out 1200 to 1300 calories a day to cover 3 meals and 2 snacks is very difficult. Almonds are my 'go to' snack if it isn't time for a meal. Or 4 wheat thins and 1/2 ounce of cheddar seems to stablize me. On weekends, I can eat a larger late lunch and then skip dinner and just snack the rest of the day.

Thanks for the link.

The number will change. When I started low carb, I ate three meals and two snacks. But, your insulin stabilizes and you no longer need snacks after a while. I have had periods of one meal a day and periods of three meals. Right now, I eat two or three depending on my hunger that day.

Food for thought. I am in the process of reading 'The Metabolic Clock' book which suggests eating 5 times a day; 3 meals, 2 snacks. It depends on which book, website etc you read; they all sound right, because they have a way of putting THEIR point across.

I feel it all boils down to what you are comfortable with. For me I am still working that out and will have an answer at the end of May.

Since one of my goals is to eat only when truly hungry, I got to thinking about the common advice that it's better to eat several small meals throughout the day than the standard breakfast, lunch and supper. What does the research really say? Well, I found this article:

authoritynutrition.com/how-many-meal
s-
per-day/

This cleared up some myths I think we've all heard, especially that eating more frequently revs up the metabolism. The article also states "Studies show that people who eat fewer, larger meals have lower blood glucose levels on average (4)."

I think the rest of his articles will be worth reading too, I briefly browsed around and he is a low carb high fat advocate and includes links to the research he cites.
