I agree. Most of us seem to be "blooming" with this type of challenge. I hope June turns out to be just as good.

My last May post:

Friday, May 31

Track food. Over on calories, but tracked, and that's OK.
Practice good posture and carriage.
Leave work on time.
Walk at least 8 "rounds" at work. Did 10
Eat veggies at lunch and dinner, at least 3 servings total. Yup!!

Friday:

1) exercise - nope, and I really think I need to make more effort to do this next month!
2) dog walk - oh yes, otherwise I pay for it with bounciness at the time of day when I want to drop
3) food - did great, but went over my calories. I'm still giving myself this one.
4) posture - don't really remember but I'm giving myself this flower because it's really starting to become a habit to monitor and adjust
5) self-care - came home from work and did the minimum of chores and then relaxed - I get this one!

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I think we all did a good job this month - being accountable and paying attention to our needs is a huge part of meeting goals. For me, it's the first month in which I felt like I set reasonable goals for myself - that is huge progress for me!!

For Friday, 6 flowers:
1. Nails - yes
2. 40 g. net carbs or less - yes
3. Eat only when hungry - yes
4. Deskercize 4 times per day when I am at work - yes
5. Work on Bible study or "5" book every day - no
6. Once/week different exercise - no
7. Posture/Core exercises 5x/week - yes
8. Gratitude journal every day - yes

Reached 85% of my possible points, I am pleased with this month. Onward to June! Almost forgot while I was making breakfast this morning that I needed veggies, so had to steam a package of broccoli and added some to my eggs. Now I have plenty ready for the rest of the week for my morning eggs.

Love your attitude, Maw! I was feeling like a failure this month with only about 70% of the total points earned. But I went back and looked at my sheet, I had marked down a possible 248 points, but that didn't seem right, so I re-added (several times) my weekly points possible and it turns out I had added one week's twice! So my total points possible are only 202, not 248. I am on track today to come in at 171 or 172 total, so that puts me at 85%. Not the 90 I was aiming for, but pretty darn good! I won't get my reward, but strangely I'm OK with that. Maybe I just didn't want that reward enough! Certainly not as much as the month before.

In any case, when I see all the things I've done that I know I would have blown off on many occasions otherwise, I see progress! Yes, the nails have been especially challenging and they are still short, but the weak tips are growing out and getting filed down so soon I will have stronger tips and most importantly I'm not messing with them all the time.

I love my spreadsheet and will continue that for June. And it just works so well that I will be doing some other non-health related things again.

I was looking at my spreadsheet of what I've done for this challenge this month, and I'm very pleased. The important thing, to my way of thinking, isn't how many of the things on my list I have or haven't done, but how many good things I've done specifically because of this challenge that I wouldn't have done otherwise. A couple of things really stand out. First, I have gotten to bed by 10:30 23 times, and when I wasn't it was almost always an intentional decision to stay up later (like to watch Lark Rise to Candleford that comes on at 10:00), rather than just not getting around to going to bed. It's usually 10:29 or 10:30, but by golly I'm in bed before the clock changes to 10:31! I have been concious of my posture every day, and have straightened up a lot. Still a lot more to do with this one, but I've made a good start. I have been more consistent with my knee exercises and my other exercise than I would have otherwise. I have stuck with Atkins Induction food and no dairy though I really really really wanted carrots and cheese. I mean I really wanted cheese! And I get to have cheese, starting tomorrow! I have been much more consistent with taking my morning pills than I have been in the past.

I don't think the scale reflects much change, but these are good, healthy habits (except for the no cheese!) that I need to - and want to - continue to develope and maintain.

Thanks, everyone! I wouldn't have done it without you!

Blew off the tracking and reporting parts of my challenge this month--I figured I had a decent chance of getting either the bodywork or the reporting done, not both, and that the first was far more important.

So, no points for me. But I did manage 31/31 for posture and detox, and 27/31 for culture, so I'm not too unhappy. (Also, ending the month a pound and a half lighter than I started, though I'm back in a five-pound range again so it might not be significant.)

Congrats to all for their progress! And, oh, how I wish I could rest on that "slug bench" today.

No veggies for supper, which I knew, and I was late getting to bed, but I blame that on my brother! Not only is he a handy person to blame for just about anything :) but it actually happens to be true this time! He called as I was getting ready for bed, which is a very unusual occurence.

emoticon emoticon Posture - was concious of it throughout the day, and straightened up when I remembered.
emoticon Exercises - did them all - but wasn't in bed on time
emoticon Food - didn't eat my veggies at supper, but other than that I ate what I should and didn't eat what I shouldn't and drank my water and took my pills
emoticon Community - posted here and on another thread and posted my food
emoticon Other - read a chapter from Fran McCullough's Good Fats, Bad Fats, read a chapter of the Bible, and wrote out a gratitude list

And my bonus veggies for three fifteen minute sessions of getting stuff done around the house(getting into the spirit of next month) -

I like the June challange! I think I'll keep my same five focus items and just add fruits/veggies to it.

Well, this week was mostly a write-off in terms of tracking. I just had to give up even trying. It was stressing me out to not get to it, but other things were more important to me so out it went. Kinda like last fall when my workload exploded overnight. Oh well. I actually didn't eat badly, just didn't track it all.

Also missed most of 3 days of walking/exercising, and that's more dangerous, since I already take the weekends off anyway. Back on track today, and already have a half hour of walking in.

Posture awareness has been good.

Haven't left on time yet this week. Grrrrr. Walked out of here on Tuesday and Wednesday feeling like my brain was full of wet cotton. Blech.

Have been cutting back on the caffeine fairly easily, till I realized that my water additive is actuallly made from instant tea. LOL! Doesn't have a TON of cafffeine, but certainly more than I need! I'm finishing off the last little box and then I'll stick to the non-caffeinated flavors.

Veggie intake is up, but still not enough. Looking forward to focusing on it in June!

So here's a flourish for the last several days:

"Lettuce Squash the Weeds & Turnip the Blooms!"

It's a flowers-and-veggies-themed challenge for the bountiful month of June!

Set your own veggie-eaing goals and reward your good behavior with lovely virtual flowers like these:

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

or even this, the "cabbage rose"

emoticon

Need some ideas?:

- Eat the rainbow: Eat a freggie of every color
- RDA Day: Get 6 servings of freggies
- New and improved: Eat a new freggie or prepare an old favorite a new way
- Three Squares: Eat a veggie at every meal

Be creative, make your own rules!

As always, we will be pursuing our individual goals too and earning as many flowers as we can! Let's make June a colorful month!

6. Once/week different exercise - no
7. Posture/Core exercises 5x/week - yes
8. Gratitude journal every day - yes

Well, no bonus points for losing weight this month. I was down 0.6 of a pound on the first day of my cycle, but I had to lose at least a pound to get any points. My body is just happy hovering around this weight and does not want to let go of much more. I may just have to accept that.

Nay, I think we were going to do an informal group challenge relating to veggies (like we did posture this month) and had two ideas for the name of the challenge - "Blooming and Pruning in June" and "Lettuce Squash the Weeds & Turnip the Blooms."

I vote for whoever does the blurb decides which of them we use. But definitely flowers and veggies.

Wednesday:

1) exercise - no, why start now?? Blahhhhh...
2) dog walk - oh yes, got this one down thanks to Whiskey and Chaser
3) food - good up until dinner time and then went off the rails
4) posture - did great!
5) self-care - yup! Blew off cooking dinner after getting home after 7:00 and I spent some quality time cuddling a couple of happy, needy Schnauzers, and had a great skincare treatment after work.

1. Nails - yes
2. 40 g. net carbs or less - no, caved & had dessert while having dinner with friends
3. Eat only when hungry - yes

I am going to add a flylady item to my June list too, which is to take care of my hot spot daily (kitchen counter, although it's not usually MY stuff cluttering it up). In fact, I have a few items that aren't really health related that I want to work on for June, but I will include some healthy items too.

I'm going to add a bonus flower next month for doing at four 15-minute sessions of something that needs to be done. Housework, yardwork, bookwork, etc. It's a bonus flower because it won't figure into my percent done for getting a reward at the end of the month.

Anyway, I'm going to practice it today, though no flower. (Maybe a nice tomato or mushroom instead?) So, four sessions of 15 minutes each, stopping after each 15 minutes and doing something else. A la Fly Lady and Woubbie. And believe me, there's no shortage of thing that need done today!

The Slug Bench is getting full - can you three scootch over a little? I carry my weight where I sit, and I belong on with the slugs! I FORGOT TO WORKOUT! Gads, I even put it on my To Do list... I am really tired today, so I guess what I lost in Exercise flowers I got for Self-care by using the Leslie System.

My Tuesday:

1) dog walk - yes, they insist!
2) exercise - see above
3) food - distributed badly over the course of the day but it all added up at the end
4) posture - slumped whilst reading about EU audits, but sat up when I realized
5) self-care - spontaneously decided to honor my tiredness and take the day off from exercise, made an exceptionally good dinner just for ME, and that's all but I consider it flower-worthy!

Track food. Nope. Probably actually underate (that's what happens when I get enough sleep!), but didn't track.

Practice good posture and carriage. Yeah.

Eat veggies at lunch and dinner, at least 3 servings total. Definitely nah.

DId do some walking yesterday, even though it was a non-work day, but not enough.

For Monday:

1) exercise - nope!
2) dog walk - nope!
3) food - less than ideal food but I did not overeat - still don't get this one!
4) posture - in the car all day but I was conscious of it
5) self-care - yes! I hung out with a good friend and we took the boys on a road trip. We didn't plan anything - just drove, talk, and caught up.

Fitkris, painting is hard work! You deserve a massage and some pampering! :)

Our area has had 8-10 inches of rain over the weekend, with more to come later tonight and throughout the week. So glad we put a sump pump in our basement a few years ago when it flooded, no water down there this time!

Pain. Agony. Misery. Maybe I'm being a *bit* melodramatic, but holy cow - I do not remember ever being this sore after painting. No idea how many times I was up and down the chair I stood on to cut in at the top of the wall along the ceiling, but I am really feeling it today. So is DH, we are like a couple of elderly people groaning every time we move. But the dining room is painted and looks good. I vow to move before doing that room again.

For Saturday, 3 flowers:
1. Nails - no, sigh.
2. 40 g. net carbs or less - yes
3. Eat only when hungry - yes
4. Deskercize 4 times per day when I am at work - not at work
5. Work on Bible study or "5" book every day - no

Good for you, Leslie, facing up to your fears that way! I think we get so desensitized by TV and movies that what we see on TV doesn't really sink in. At least that's the case for me. I still think that the Twin Towers attack on 9/11 looks like some disaster show rather than real life. I'm sure seeing the real thing would have been entirely different experience, even months after the actual event. Same with the bridge. Seeing it collapse on TV and seeing it in person must be very different.

When you come back as a Schnauzer in your next life, make sure you come back to a good owner, too!

Only 4 flowers for me for yesterday. Two planned and concious deviations from my goals. First, I got a box of strawberries at the Farmers Market. And second, I stayed up and watched Lark Rise to Candleford on PBS. But I did everything else on the list.

emoticon emoticon Posture - was concious of it throughout the day, and straightened up when I remembered.
emoticon Exercises - did them all - but late to bed
emoticon Food - ate what I should and didn't eat what I shouldn't (except for the strawberries) and drank my water and took my pills
emoticon Community - posted here and on another thread and posted my food
emoticon Other - read a chapter from Fran McCullough's Good Fats, Bad Fats, read a chapter of the Bible, and wrote out a gratitude list

I'm counting working all day at the library as my "other" exercise. It was my first full day since my knee started acting up so much, and it went fine. I was a bit concerned about how much it would hurt and whether it would set my knee off for a few days, but it didn't.

One thing I have found is that standing up straight makes my knee work much better. Apparently I tend to sort of hunch over when my knee is bothering me, not wanting to straighten it fully. But if I make a point of standing up straight, including not just my back and shoulders but also my knee, it seems to get the bones in my leg in the right postitions relative to the knee and it works much better. And I look at lot better, too, not all hunched over!

Maw, this valley is cut in half by the Skagit River. There are several crossings, but they are pretty circuitous routes. I've lived here long enough to know the backroads, but unfortunately all the heavy interstate traffic to and from Seattle and British Columbia is all being detoured on those road! I'm just going to have to resign myself to taking my time, listening to my music, and going with the traffic. Don't have to think about it until next Thursday! :)

Saturday:

1) exercise - nope!
2) dog walk - yes, a nice one this morning through the woods and I let the boys sniff, pee, and poo at their leisure!
3) food - eek
4) posture - worked on a few minor things at my desk (at home) and caught myself slumping but I fixed it. It's been a slumpy kind of day though. Not giving myself this one.
5) self-care - I get this one. I really took the day off and I pretty much wallowed in it!

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

In other news I drove over the overpass just north of the collapsed bridge because I was afraid I was getting a bit phobic about it. Holy crow, I had another meltdown! It looks so much worse in person than on the news stories! It's bigger, mangled, and just so WRONG. Now there is another surveilance video out that shows how fast it went down after getting hit. It's boggling. I took the boys with me just to face it all down, and Chaser snoozed on the backseat the whole time while Whiskey poked his face out the window on the wrong side of the car. Basically they just don't have a care in the world! LOL I wanna be a Schnauzer in my next life...

Ugh. Not a stellar day - I did not sleep so well last night.

1) exercise - nope
2) dog walk - nope
3) food - eek
4) posture - could barely sit up let alone sit up straight
5) self-care - well, skipping the exercise and the dog walk was a conscious decision because I was loopy-tired, but I think that was made out of exhaustion but not self-care, so - nope!

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

So last night I was going to thoughtfully and generously have a Crown on the rocks for Kris and then five minutes later learned that the bridge had collapsed, so I forgot. Tonight I opened a bottle of red wine that I bought because of the label - it's from Trader Joe's and it says "nosedive".

Really.

Had to have it.

Tonight is the end of a 24-hour period of shock, relief, anxiety, and confusion, and tomorrow I am out of the 'nosedive' (both the bottled kind and then mental/emotional kind!) and back to cruising altitude!

Nay, I was just thinking the same thing, lol.

Actually I like both. My inner child goes for the puns but my uberchild thinks the pruning and blooming is probably more appropriate. And accurate.

But definitely flowers! (I HAVE to go with the "cabbage roses" now!)

As of Thursday 23 May:

18/23 days--Follow Atkins Induction every day
18/23 days--Posture exercises of some type (10 minutes minimum) every day

Super busy with work this week, which is how it goes--my work is feast or famine. I'm learning that I really can't commit to doing any exercise every day (other than neck stretches and so on during desk breaks). I had been committing to X number of exercise minutes per month, and I think that's more realistic for me.
Mmm, veggies. I don't eat much veg, and I was thinking of increasing my intake.
Thanks, everyone,
Laurie

Or maybe:
"Pruning & Blossoming in June"? - reflecting things we cut out and things we need to do
"Rooting (or Growing) Good Habits"?
"Lettuce (let us) Squash the weeds & Turnip (turn up) the Blooms...?? " - since we may do a veggie/fruit focus. Kinda cheesy though...

For Thursday, 6 flowers:
1. Nails - yes
2. 40 g. net carbs or less - yes, skipped the work lunch potluck and ordered a veggie tray at book club last night
3. Eat only when hungry - yes
4. Deskercize 4 times per day when I am at work - yes - wow, I am getting tired of this one!
5. Work on Bible study or "5" book every day - no
6. Once/week different exercise - no
7. Posture/Core exercises 5x/week - yes but I still find myself slouching more than I would like by this point
8. Gratitude journal every day - yes

So I'm kind of getting the impression that whatever we call the June challenge, it should be along the same lines as the May one, with flowers for the things we say we'll do (or not do) and do (or don't)? With maybe vegetables being the group challenge, however we each, individually, want to structure that part of the challenge? And someone suggested Just Do It in June as the name of the challenge.

Sound good? Any other ideas or suggestions or tweaks?

I wanna keep the flowers too! It's like a little visual reward every day!

Kris, I would SO have a Crown on the rocks with you if I were closer, but in lieu of that how about I have one on your behalf two states away?? I'm thoughtful that way...

Leslie's Thursday:

1) exercise - nah
2) dog walk - yes, slightly shorter version because of time and weather
3) food - blah! Did a Bad Thing.
4) posture - noticing it regularly now and I want to keep this as part of my future challenges!
5) self-care - I'm giving myself this because I'm home at a reasonable time, made a good dinner, and am letting myself take the evening off

Rewards:

Not that I am doing much with this challenge but I don't know about a challenge with FRUIT. I don't know about others but on a low carb I sure don't eat much fruit. Veggies, I try to get in. I work in surgery and am told by a general surgeon that there are more appendicitis cases when people start eating watermelon in the season because of the seeds. Don't know how true that is but he used to swear by it. Just a trivia....

'Yell "Fudge" at the Cobras in North America Day' What does that even mean?

I like the idea of a group challenge with fruits and veggies.

Blood donor is good, but obviously not something you can do every day.

Great Outdoors, iced tea, and Bathroom Reading are things I like to do daily.

I eat my watermelon seeds.

You had me going there, Kris. I was trying to picture you, wearing a crown, on a rocky outcroping in the ocean. That didn't work. The rocks and the oceans sound good, but I couldn't quite get the crown. Then I thought that maybe you were referring to something from this challenge, but we're doing flowers this month. Crowns next month, maybe? Was there something about crowns in that list of special June events? It finally dawned on me what you meant. Or at least what I think you mean. Having a rough day?

I'm with you on that on, Leslie. Seems like one would be aware that one was being celibate or not being celibate. At least I would hope so!

emoticon emoticon Posture - was concious of it throughout the day, and straightened up when I remembered.
emoticon Exercises - did them all - and in bed on time
emoticon Food - ate what I should and didn't eat what I shouldn't and drank my water and took my pills
emoticon Community - posted here and on another thread and posted my food
emoticon Other - read a chapter from Jonny Bowden's Living the Low Carb Life, read a couple of chapters of the Bible, and wrote out a gratitude list

Maw, that list is hilarious! In what ways does an awareness of celibacy get cultivated?? I'm guessing that if you're celibate you're pretty much aware of it. Anyway... I think our challenges are focus challenges and that's a good thing for me. It puts my attention on some aspect of my life that needs attention! So maybe Just Do It June? Or something like that?

I did better today than I thought I did (after logging my food), but I had a Crown on the rocks tonight with a friend that I didn't log. :)

1) exercise - nope
2) dog walk - yup!
3) food - yup, did good!
4) posture - yup!
5) self-care - met a good friend for dinner and gabbed for FOUR hours! :)

National Bathroom Reading Month - that's a habit I don't need to work on, I think I have it mastered, thankyouverymuch.

National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month - Yeah, I still need to keep this one on my active list. If I weren't so liberal about what counts as one of "my" servings I'd still blow it most days. Maybe I'll make this my new "rose":

emoticon

National Rebuild Your Life Month - nice, but maybe too ambitious for a monthly challenge, eh?

Thanks, Kris, but I think I'm ok with it as is. I get a full body massage if I get at least 80% for the month, and I should make that. There are definitely times when I would go your route, but I think that for this month I'm better off just accepting that while I have done well, I haven't done great. For some reason, for this month it's an accountability thing for me. (Isn't it great having a challenge that we can adapt to where we are at any point in time?!)

Woubbie, are you the one who asked if we could continue with the flowers? I like that idea, too. Like maybe a "June Is Bursting Out All Over" challenge?

Let's see... what else is June about?

National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month
National Celebacy Awareness Month
National Great Outdoors Month
National Bathroom Reading Month
National Flag Month
National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month (maybe throw in a group challenge about fruits and veggies?)
National Iced Tea Month
National Potty Training Awareness Month
National Rebuild Your Life Month

Don't like any of those? How about National Fight the Filthy Fly Month or National Accordian Awareness Month? www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays
/j
une.htm

Or World Naked Bike Ride Month? www.brownielocks.com/june.html

Or there's the International Clothesline (remember those?) Week and Watermelon Seed Spitting Week.

Or special days -

June 2 - National Cancer Survivors Day (Yay, Faith!)
June 2 - Yell "Fudge" at the Cobras in North America Day
June 4 - Audacity to Hope Day
June 7 - 9 - Positive Power of Humor and Creativity Days
June 14 - Pause for the Pledge Day
June 14 - World Blood Donor Day
June 19 - World Sauntering Day (I like that - sauntering instead of running)

And the full moon on the 23rd will be the Strawberry Moon.

Maw, could you add a couple things to get bonus points for? Something you don't have to do but if you do, you get to add a point? Just a thought...it's kind of my fallback in case I'm not doing well, and I'm not near 90% either, but I have made a lot of progress. So have you, so stay focused on what you HAVE done.

For Tuesday, 6 flowers:
1. Nails - yes
2. 40 g. net carbs or less - yes
3. Eat only when hungry - yes
4. Deskercize 4 times per day when I am at work - yes
5. Work on Bible study or "5" book every day - no
6. Once/week different exercise - no
7. Posture/Core exercises 5x/week - yes

I really like these flowers. Is it too soon to vote for keeping them for next month's challenge?

Tuesday, May 2

Track food.
Practice good posture and carriage.
Leave work on time.
Walk at least 8 "rounds" at work. Left work early, never did the remainder.
Eat veggies at lunch and dinner, at least 3 servings total.

Thanks, Kris, I'm not. In fact, it seems to be acting as a spur to finish up the month in style.

I was prancing around yesterday (in my head!) all proud of doing everything for the day and then got to taking my evening pills and saw my morning pills still in the pill box! And I was sure I'd taken them. Oh well. Five instead of six flowers for yesterday, but no big deal.

For some reason, I had been slowly gaining weight the first half of the month, and then losing that weight and some more since I got back from Tulsa. Don't know what's going on with that, unless I needed the extra carbs and calories. I'll probably have most of the same goals next month, but am rethinking the food part.

emoticon emoticon Posture - was concious of it throughout the day, and straightened up when I remembered.
emoticon Exercises - did them all - and in bed on time
emoticon Food - ate what I should and didn't eat what I shouldn't and drank my water and tthought I took my pills but apparently didn't
emoticon Community - posted here and on another thread and posted my food
emoticon Other - read a chapter from Jonny Bowden's Living the Low Carb Life, read a couple of chapters of the Bible, and wrote out a gratitude list

Gotta keep this short - had a long day!

1) exercise - nope
2) dog walk - yup, in the rain!
3) food - yup did well except that I ate too much
4) posture - yup, aware, corrected, and congratulated myself (silently!)
5) self-care - nope, investment club meeting tonight, volunteered to be co-treasurer to take some stress off the first treasurer, and finally ate dinner at 9:00. Eep.

Well, poo! I just checked my schedule of points to see where I'm at percentage wise, and I'm not even 80%! In fact, even if I get all of my points for the rest of the month, I still won't make 90% for the month. But that's no excuse not to try to get as high as possible!

Just checking in. I am doing well just don't feel like tracking and writing etc.Sort of like Maw was saying the other day. Sort of rebellious but have been quite busy over the weekend and here at work. Exhausted at night. I did make it into the 220's. I have been shooting for that for a long time! Hopefully I can stay there and continue to move downward. I am not going to weigh for a few days so that I don';t get discouraged if it does pop back up and down. I am continuing doing what I have been doing. I am trying to have physical activity every day. Yesterday I rode the exercisse bike at pt for 30 minutes and did back exercises at home. Am also continuing to focus on posture. Have done some walking too in preparation for the Relay for Life walk that I am doing. Donations are sort of slow. I don't think I will make my goal but hoping I will do ok.
Have a great day everyone.

Manic Monday so late check in from me... And let's just gloss over the weekend.

1) exercise - YES! I did 35 minutes on my ski machine tonight!
2) dog walk - YES! Walked the boys in the woods this morning and Chaser didn't ask to turn around early.
3) food - I'm giving myself this one, but I'm realizing that I am still rigidly stuck on viewing it as a positive or a negative depending on how I feel about it rather than based on facts. I was extra hungry today so I ate some stuff that was unplanned - not junk, but just unplanned. That made me feel like I Failed. *sigh* I think most of my food issues are cemented in my brain.
4) posture - mindful all day!
5) self-care - nothing notable but I did not work too long this evening - I quit at a reasonable time!
