I occasionally use spinach (raw or cooked) in my smoothies - also broccoli (cooked cauliflower (also cooked) cooked asparagus in my smoothies too. It works great and gives a serving of vegetable. I'm going to experiment with some romaine lettuce too one of these days. I've put avocado in them also. It seems things without strong flavors don't flavor the shake too much. I use Torani, DaVinci or there's another brand, can't remember it now - a huge assortment of flavors.

Usually for the base of mine I'll use some club soda and cream or will also use Pure Silk brand almond milk which has 30 calories, 1 gram carb, 2.5 grams fat in 8 oz. plus 45% of the daily calcium requirement. Works very well.

The possibilities are endless, aren't they?

I use my vanilla or strawberry protein powder (pHd diet whey brand) and mix in some coconut or alpro milk and these days a couple of handfuls of spinach! Sounds weird I know, but it's fab. You can't even taste the spinach but you get all the goodness in. I don't use fruit in mine either; I feel like it's not worth wasting my carbs by putting fruit in it. I do eat berries sometimes (rarely) but just not in my smoothies.

I like the whey protein shakes, too. I use Designer Whey brand (which is incidentally the same brand our Dr. uses). I don't add fruit, although I love fruit, because the sugars really run the carb count up. I used to make the shakes with almond or coconut milk, which still tastes better to me - but again, runs the carbs up. Instead, I add some sugar-free DaVinci syrup to the mix, and it tastes yummy! DaVinci makes an incredible array of flavored syrups. I love the blueberry or pancake syrup, or banana...German chocolate cake... lots of delectables. And no carbs. =D

If I go for fruit, I eat a small portion of it straight up, and let my protein shakes stand alone.

I use whey protein powder (Precision Engineered Isolate), unsweetened almond milk and sometimes 1/2 cup of berries, mainly strawberries, blueberries or raspberries. Whiz it all in the blender, add some ice to thicken if you want. Sweeten to taste, I use the SF Torani or DaVinci syrup to sweeten and intensify flavor. Sometimes I will add some hwc as well.

I make whey protein shakes all the time... but the fruit smoothies that became so popular in the 70's are way to high in sugar for m now. They were probably no good for me then, either, but I didn't know any better. I do mix berries into vanilla protein shakes, sometimes.

We make one with whey (left over from yogurt making) and frozen mango with a small amount of low-carb sweetener of your choice. Another one I like is some frozen berries with canned coconut milk or half-and-half.
