And why not start a new tradition! Next time, ask everyone to think about bringing some healthier options, not just for you, but for everyone's health and benefit. I agree with the suggestions about bringing a stash for yourself. And staying away from those places in the school where you know there will be junk. For that matter bring in some wonderful LC snacks for everyone to show them what you are doing.

Awful story....my mom was an English teacher for 50 years. She struggled with her weight her whole life. One time in the faculty lounge there was a chocolate cake and she ate it. Not sure how much, but she got very sick. Come to find out a very mean girl (I still remember her!) put Exlax in it! I remember my mom telling me it was a sign to stay away from cake!

You can do this!

I still great great joy from food. I love food. I love eating. I look forward to each meal. There are enough amazing foods you can eat. Everyone may be eating cookies, but if I am eating a bacon burger, who cares?

When my kids were going to school, they weren't allowed to bring treats unless they were store bought and still sealed in their packages -no home cooked stuff. Which was a good practice I think. Seems like they could tho bring a birthday cake from a bakery.. too many years ago, don't remember that part for sure.

Well, you just never know so it's very possible...and even excellent cooks can be carrying germs and passing them on...school's are really just germ factories.

Lol, Fitkris, that's so true! Unfortunately, I know exactly who's making the stuff, and they are excellent cooks, but I have used that trick for many a birthday treat in the past! Thanks for all of the encouragement everyone!

Jen, I used to be an elementary teacher and always found it hard to eat anything my kids brought me, because I just didn't know what kind of home it came from (or I did and that was reason enough to abstain). Not trying to be judgmental, but when you work around kids you know how prevalent germs are and how quick they spread. So maybe just thinking about the possible illnesses whoever made those treats may have been exposed to and are possibly being transmitted in those treats may help you to resist. Hope I have ruined any desire to snack on them!

You can do this!!

Good luck this week, Jen!

I am new to the boards, but I struggle with this, myself, so much - lots of social gatherings and tempting goodies. My go-to snacks to bring, if it's something where you bring a dish, are either deviled eggs with just mayo, mustard and dill relish, or a pickle/olive/crudité relish tray (maybe with cheese, too, if it's a smaller gathering).

Another good treat, especially if you are just bringing your own thing for yourself, is the lower-carb nuts and seeds, either individually or make a mix of them to snack on. If I'm in the rare mood for sweet instead of salty, I get an Atkins bar and chop it into bite-sized pieces and keep it in a baggie to snack on, which makes it last longer and tends to keep me from bad decisions (hint: this is what I sneak in to the movie theater with me, too, hehe).

I am so thankful for this eating plan, because I really am a savory snacker, which usually means carbs, and yet it is still easy to find things you love that fit your plan - I just have to remind myself that I will feel more satisfaction if I just absolutely avoid anything but the things I brought!

Again, good luck, you will do great!

Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn’t.

You're on the right track. The first order of business is prepare, prepare, prepare! Make sure you have "legal" yummies with you. Even if you go over on calories for the day, just staying low on carbs will make you feel victorious at the end of the day! Lasting joy replacing fleeting joy!

I agree Jen...it is easiest and QUICKEST to get pleasure/comfort from food. Food doesn't talk back, disagree with you, make any demands and is certainly readily available everywhere. A great goal is to seek other forms of satisfaction......sometimes I just have to get in the bathtub to avoid self medicating if nothing else is working

hmmm, that's an interesting thought, that food was not joy but opportunity. Can you explain what you mean by that?

While I understand that food should not be joy, I really do believe that when I was in my darkest moments, it is where I found some sort of relief, excitement, and satisfaction. I know that because I found pleasure in food, it has lead me to where I am today, so I know I need to focus on finding those things elsewhere. Maybe "joy" is not the word, but I definitely know that I need to find contentment, excitement, and satisfaction somewhere other than in food.

Accountability moment, here we go!

Monday and Thursday of this week, I will be staying at work until 8pm due to parent/teacher conferences. While I love the opportunity to meet with parents, I DON'T enjoy the fact that this means there will be piles of carby food EVERYWHERE! I'm not a classroom teacher, so conference time can get a bit boring, so I am vowing now to stay on track, no matter what tempting items might be available.

I'm still learning to accept that in this new way of life, there will often be times where I am surrounded by all of the food that used to bring me so much joy, and I just need to keep reminding myself that there are WAY better things than sweet and salty treats!)

So, I vow to blog about these two days on Friday, to hold myself accountable to the "Sparkosphere" about how awesomely I stayed on track! :)
