So April was pretty good for me. For yesterday I had 3 points plus 5 for losing weight again so that put me at 134 points with a goal of 125. Looking forward to the May challenge and getting more physical. That Olivia Newton John song just popped into my head. Maybe I need to down load it onto my iPod, in fact, I think I will make a whole playlist for my walking, etc.

Well done team!!

Way to go Maw!

I too, ended April well with one more point needed than necessary to earn my reward. So, last night I got out the book that I bought and started it.

I decided I was going to go out of April with a bang, and I did it! All 9 miles! In spite of having a killer final in the evening. The syllabus said it would be "short essay answer questions." She said in class there would be 4 questions. Actually there were 3 questions, but one had two parts. I spent the entire 2 hours writing and filled one and a half of those old fashioned blue exam books. There's no way those were short essay answer questions. She even agreed!

Anyway, I don't know how many "miles" I got this month, but I do know that I was doing better at getting all my miles by the end of the month than at the beginning of the month.

You know, it's kind of odd. In April, we were moving along in journey. In May, we're blooming where we're planted! As long as we don't come to a screeching halt...

Well, my best estimate of how far I've walked this month is about 60 miles walked. Maybe a bit more. It's an improvement over previous months but nothing too exciting. I'll keep working on it in May. Finished up with a good veggie day, and left (barely) on time, but let's see if I actually get to bed before 11:45 tonight.... Ha! Not likely. :( Onward to May!

Well, in the interest of self-care I'm sneaking out of work early (by about a half hour) to go walk the boys before tackling some client stuff!

Took a coworker out for lunch for her birthday today and she picked teriyaki... And I ate the rice. And almost immediately got sleepy at my desk. Baked cod for dinner and zero carbs!!!

Got in 2 extra walks yesterday! So my usual one at work, then took the dog for about 20 minutes after work, then DH and I snuck out of my son's band concert after his group was done playing (but they have to stay for ALL the different bands - jazz, concert, symphonic, etc) and walked around the neighborhood of the school for almost an hour. It was just too nice to sit inside and starting tomorrow the rest of the week is going to be crap, weather-wise. Also did well on my no snacking challenges. If I stay on track today I will meet my monthly point goal. Yay! Still thinking about what I should do for May.

Eight out of nine miles yesterday. The last mile would have been for getting to bed by 10:30, and the clock turned over to 10:31 just as I was pulling back the covers but hadn't gotten in yet. Rats! So I went ahead and finished up the things I should have done before going to bed, which took an extra two minutes. But it was really close, and having that goal in front of me got me to bed earlier than without it. Even if I did get up in the middle of the night because I couldn't sleep.

Today is the last day of my meat and egg fast. I have really stuck to it but I haven't lost. In fact, I put on a few pounds, though some of that came off today for some reason. When I have done a meat and egg fast in the past, I usually didn't lose during the fast but did when I went back to Induction type carb levels, so I'm hoping that will happen this time, too.

Have no idea how many miles I've gone, but I do know that I have done a lot of things on a daily or close to daily basis that I wouldn't have done without it, so I consider it big success for me!

Well, way too many calories, pretty high fat and protein but quite low carb. Had to fight the urge to pig out tonight but got 4 of my 5miles.I did lose weight. Not to goal but down so 5 miles for that so that is 9 miles of today which I believe puts me over goal at 126 miles if I remember yesterday correctly.

BudgetMaw, I have heard of Horsethief Lake, but don't think I've ever been there. We used to camp near Hill City when I was a kid at the Rafter J Bar ranch. Several years ago we took our kids and camped at the same place, that was fun. We also climbed Harney Peak that trip, ugh - that was a tough hike and I swore never again. But this weekend my DH expressed interest in doing it again sometime - not likely for me! I love the Black Hills, though.

Leslie, how wonderful that you are connecting with your ex's family again! It sounds as though you really have a special relationship with them, and you needed some self care - you are one busy woman!

Great idea to work on posture and getting flowers for mini goals. I found this month that giving myself a check for each goal really motivated me, along with the reward I'm working toward. OK, maybe the reward is the real motivator. "Whatever works" is my motto!

Yesterday DH, son and I worked in the yard, still had lots of smaller branches and sticks from our ice storm to pick up, we have another pile for the city to come and get. I also took the dog for a walk later, eating was good. With 2 days left of April I need 6 checks which means I have to stick to my 2 daily goals and get extra exercise in both days. I'm going to have to make some adjustments to my goals for next month because the scale has gone up a little instead of down this month. I MAY have gotten carried away eating cheesecake most days for my afternoon snack. :) Even though it's LC it still has a lot of calories.

8 miles for me yesterday. I seem to have an all or nothing view of bedtime. If I'm not going to be in bed by 10:30, I might as well stay up as late as I want! Fortunately I don't carry that attitude over into everything in my life.

I played with my MIL all weekend and now I'm tired! My SIL went Paleo a while ago and looks great, and she's been working on getting my MIL to try it. I was really surprised at how easy it was to make meals that were just right for her! We went out to lunch on Saturday (Anthony's Homeport in case anyone's familar with that chain), and I admit to a cup of clam chowder, but my lunch was a shrimp Cobb and I didn't even have to say no croutons - there were none! I think they even forgot to bring us bread so I didn't have to face that.

Anyway, my eating was not all that bad at all - in fact, it was pretty darn good! I drank way too much red wine on Friday night, but we had about eight years to catch up on... In terms of self-care, it was one of the best things I could have done for myself. I got my family back!

Woubbie nailed it with the May challenge - I will lose track of the flowers and keeping score, but I always have. I like the challenge though!

Went a little over on carbs today, had artificial sweeteners and cream so only 2 miles today which puts me at 117 miles out of 125 with 2 days left. If I lose when I weigh in tomorrow I will give myself bonus 5 points/miles.

How about:

emoticon May Challenge: Bloom Where You Are Planted emoticon

Whether you have 100 pounds to lose or 10; can't do a single sit-up or can do 100 burpees a day; eat on plan every day or struggle to eat on plan two days in a row; come join our monthly challenge thread!

It's not about competing with others, it's about improving your own personal bests - blooming where YOU'RE planted.

Choose as many small goals as you like and award yourself daily "flowers" for reaching them! Who doesn't love getting flowers?

emoticon emoticon emoticon

For bonus "flowers" you can award two flowers per day for working on our group challenge: working on improving posture and carriage.

You might focus on awareness and improvement of your posture during the day, on the ergonomics of your seating and sleeping areas, or on exercise that strengthens your back and your core. This might even include getting fitted for better shoes and better foundation garments.

May starts in just two days, so let's get thinking about what we're going to do! It sounded like the two themes that got the most interest were posture and flowers, so let's go with that. How about we take as a group challenge to work on our posture, however we chose to do that. Then let's all decide what other goals we want to work on, and give ourselves a flower for each goal we meet. My suggestion, and this is just based on me, is that we give ourselves credit for meeting the small daily goals we do meet, rather than making it an all or nothing thing each day. So if there are three things you want to do and you only make two of them, you give yourself two flowers for the two things you did do. Mark from Mark's Daily Apple did a couple of posts about giving yourself credit for small goals instead of just focussing on the big ones. I know it works better for me.

So, what do you think? Want to go with this or do you have another idea? And if you do want to go with this, someone want to write it up? Or, if you don't want to go with this, someone want to write up whatever we do do?

Are you familiar with Horsethief Lake, FitKris? It's behind Mount Rushmore. That was our favorite place to camp when I was a kid. We used to walk/hike around the lake, too. It has really changed since the good old days, of course. When we used to camp there, they just had outhouses. When we went back several years later, they had improved things so that they had chemical toilets - which were locked because the season hadn't started yet! The old kind may have been pretty stinky at times, but at least they were always open!

Seven miles yesterday. I had some 72% chocolate that was sitting out at the library yesterday morning, and didn't get to bed by 10:30 because I had forgotten that I had taken the sheets off the bed to wash and hadn't put them back on yet.

Did good eating at my daughter's today. Great choices for me. Grilled steak and chicken and veggies. Also homemade guacamole! Did have a diet coke and a handful of peanuts but stayed under 20 carbs, tracked my food and had about 6 cups of water. I did have cream in my coffee too so I only got 3 miles. I think that puts me at 115 out of 125 goal.

I don't usually do any exercise on the weekends but today I actually did a 5K walk. Made good time too. Up and down Western Pennsylvania hills for just about an hour. Blood sugar was crap at the finish line so I actually grabbed a couple bites of chocolate brownie. And some bacon.

Got back into town a couple hours ago, DH and I had a great time on our trip. I spent yesterday in the downtown area doing lots of walking and browsing. Today we found a little lake with a bike path and walked that for almost an hour, then did a shorter walk at Mt. Rushmore. Did fine on my monthly challenges of not eating between breakfast and lunch or after 7:30 pm, however my eating at meals deteriorated a little yesterday and quite a bit today, way too many carbs. I'm hoping I did enough exercise to burn it off, but not really expecting that I did. A 5 hour car ride kind of negates the walking IMO. I will be back on track tomorrow.

emoticon 1. Drink at least 8 glasses of water. Yes!

emoticon 2. Track my food, even if I don't weigh and measure it. But weighing and measuring would be good, too. Yes!

emoticon 3. Read at least one chapter in a low carb, paleo, etc. book. Something that relates to how I am eating and how I am trying to live my life. Just one mile for reading, even if I read a lot. I'm rereading Dana Carpender's How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost 40 Pounds. Yes!

emoticon 4. Post on this thread, and another mile for posting on another thread. Limit of two miles a day for posting. Yes and yes!

emoticon 5. Get in some exercise or activity. Yes!

emoticon 6. Read the Bible or other "spiritual"-type book. Yes!

emoticon 7. In bed by 10:30. Yes!

emoticon 8. Stuck with the meat and egg fast. Yes!

That's all 9 miles yesterday! Two days in a row! Which is especially good because the reason I chose a whole bunch of little goals instead of one or two big goals was that most of these are things that used to be habits, that I used to do as a matter of course, and then fell out of the habits. My real goal for the month was to get them to be habitual behavior again. They aren't as easy, natural, and matter of fact as I'd like them to be, so I plan of doing pretty much the same thing next month to let them sink in deeper. But they are more habitual than they were at the beginning of the month. Or at least, not doing them is less habitual!

'm pretty much over the cold but did not get more than four hours of sleep last night due to a chirping smoke alarm battery (three smoke alarms within nine feet of each other so it took three replacements to finally get the right one shut up!!), two Schnauzers who get MASS anxiety when that chirping starts, and lugging an extension ladder in from the garage at 2:30 in the morning to climb up in a cathedral ceiling to change a battery. I gotta start changing these things ahead of time!!

Not much in the way of self-care today - but I laughed and did not stress out. :)

I like the idea of posture. And I like the idea of flowers/blossoming/blooming/etc., too. How about we use flowers to mark our goals, and have as an unofficial "group" goal to work on our posture? Though how one works on that, except by walking around with a book on one's head...

Our plans are blossoming in May?

Barely got my walking in today - I'm just in Lalaland for some reason!
Ate veggies, left on time. Hope tomorrow's better.

I got 4 miles for yesterday since I did have cream in my coffee. So that puts me at 105 miles. 20 more miles until I meet the challenge destination for myself. I should be able to do that by the end of the month.

Checking in for yesterday, was busy last night so no extra walk. But I did fine on the eating challenge, no snacking between breakfast and lunch and no eating after 7:30 even though I really wanted to.

DH and I are heading to the Black Hills tonight, he has a meeting tomorrow and I decided to tag along and have some fun while he's busy, probably do some shopping as I don't think most of the touristy places are open yet. May hit Mt. Rushmore before we come home on Saturday though and I'm hoping to get my extra walking in - maybe do some hiking. My son is staying with my parents, he's not happy about it. Do I feel bad for him? Not really! We haven't gotten away without kids for a few years so this will be nice. Probably won't check in again until Sunday.

1 Drink all my water
2 Track my food
3 Exercise
4 Turn the day around and eat on plan the rest of the day

After falling completely off the map, I'm struggling to find my way back. Busy season, a mini-vacation (of which I ate on Plan until Saturday night). But because of cheating I'm really struggling to get the carbs out of me again and get back on plan. Sheesh - what an addiction! It's really pathetic.

I really need to get some work done but I want to catch up with all of you soon. I'll be back to read up on what I've been missing.

I hope you are all well!!!!

Actually I really like the posture idea! I know I slump way too much and yet I also still need to work on the self-care thing lest I burn out on everything else.

In terms of self-care today I chose not to walk the boys after getting home late and tired, and I also had a laser skin care treatment at my former client's medical spa. Relaxing and going to bed early tonight!

Faith, you have grit. I'm totally impressed.

Maw, nice to see all those walking girls!

I could work on nearly ANY of those choices. I still need to work on the sleep one, but decided to wait until the kids are on summer vacation, when I at least stand a chance to have a normal relaxing evening once in a while. The posture one I'm already starting to do. Mental health - have my first appointment with a therapist today after work. (Not to worry, it's a free benefit at work and I'm juse taking advantage of some one-on-one talk therapy - for once I'm not depressed, just stressed and a little anxious. It's the same group that my younger son goes to so they already have some of the background.)

May - I'm thinking flowers.

Ok, I have it figured out. I haven't tracked ( meaning on here, my mileage)since the 18th.
I am taking away a point for the 18th because I had artificial sweetener.
So 18th total miles 84
19 plus 4 had art swet up to 88
20th plus 3 had cream and didn't track 91 miles
21st pluls 3 didn't track had cream 94 miles
22nd plus 4 had cream 98 miles
23 rd plus 3 went over on carbs (a glass of wine put me over) 101
So I am caught up.

Don't know if I will make it to 125 or not. If I get to 230 lbs I will give myself a bonus of 10 miles. So far I got to 231 and then scale went back up again. at 234 today.

7 days left. If I stay on target I can still make this challenge.

Hi all, I really have been reading all of the posts and staying low carb. I commit today to go back and figure out my mileage since the last time I posted. There were a couple of days I did not track my food and a couple of days I had artificial sweetner because I ate some Atkins bars that I got free in the mail. I also am doing cream now so I cannot count that as a mile. But will be back and update and will finish this challenge strong and hopefully make my mileage!

As a couple of you have noted, April is almost over! Given the rain that we've had around here, there should be either lots of pilgrims or lots of flowers next month. So, what will our challenge be for the month of May?

A few ideas...

According to about.com womeninbusiness.about.com/od/diversi
ty
eventcalendars/a/nat-month-may.htm
, May is National...
•Better Sleep Month
•Correct Posture Month
•Creative Beginnings Month
•Family Wellness Month
•International Victorious Woman Month
•Meditation Month
•National Mental Health Month
•National Moving Month
•National Physical Fitness and Sports Month
•National Share A Story month
•Women's Health Care Month

According to www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays
/m
ay.htm
, it is also
National Recommitment Month

Also according to holidayinsights.com,
May 4 is National Renewal Day
May 6 is National No Diet Day
May 8 is National No Sock Day, and May 9 is National Lost Sock Memorial Day
May 10 is National Clean Up Your Room Day and May 17 is National Pack Rat Day
May 11 is National Eat What You Want Day

These are just a few I picked out as things that have been discussed here or seemed relevant somehow. Anything sound like a good theme for May? It's also Mother's Day, of course, and Memorial Day, and Cinco de Mayo.

Still have a stuffy head and low energy. *whine, moan, whimper* But I had an energy surge this afternoon at work when I found out a vendor gave us some bad numbers - cracked up my boss but I was happy to have the strength to rant! :)

I got to scoot out of work an hour early and I did some much needed errands and then took the boys for a longer walk than usual. We have lovely, sunny weather and I just wanted to be out in it! I think that counts for self-care, as well as knocking some errands off the never-ending To Do list! After I watch NCIS I am going to bed early - tired Schnauzers ensure a good night's sleep for me...

Still 25 degrees below normal here, but it did melt a bit today so I took the dog for a walk tonight, so that's 2 of my 4 extra walks this week. Also did well food-wise, no eating between breakfast and lunch and I won't be eating tonight for sure, have a bit of a stomach ache so not even tempted.

May is only a week away, let's finish strong!

Doing OK. Still not getting up and walking during the day as a matter of course, I have to always be reminded. Outside walking is going well. Nice to have nice weather back, though.

Already thinking of next month. I'm going to keep working on these four things and add one little tiny one that I haven't done in a long long time, but I need to relearn as my weight changes/shifts - posture and carriage.

I used to give myself a little reminder to check my posture any time I went through a doorway or saw my reflection anywhere. After a week or so of doing that it starts to become a little more automatic. The better my posture the better my walking, so they should reinforce each other.

Take care of yourself, Leslie! Hope you feel better soon.

I'm guessing 5 inches of the beautiful white stuff (I'm trying to be positive about this but I refuse to say the word, it being 4 letters and all) fell today before I left work. Slid to school to pick up my son and got stuck going up a hill just past the school. A guy we actually know lives there and was out helping push people like me who couldn't get enough traction to get up the hill. So nice of him! Made it home safe and am not going back out tonight. I did strength training instead of my extra walk. And good news, we may hit 70 degrees this weekend - how crazy is that?! Can't wait.

Laurie, that's the reason I decided to give myself a number of things to do, with the clear understanding that I won't be doing all of them every day. In fact, I have no goal of a specific number of them on any one day. I knew that I would rebel if I were to say that I would definitely be doing specific things every day. It seems to be working for me. At least, I know that I am doing some things that I would not be doing if they weren't on my list.

Leslie, hope you're feeling better!

Kris, I downloaded a few guided meditations from the Internet, and I began burning them to DVDs so I can do them without being on the Internet (Internet is very expensive for me).
Other than that. . . .
My food, exercise, and meditation are all kind of down the tubes, and I haven't been checking in either. I get tired of being so disciplined all the time. I'm hoping this messed-up month will be a "break" and that I'll get back on track for May 1.
Good luck, everyone!
Laurie

I've been AWOL... Started to get sick on Friday and pretty much dragged myself through the weekend. I worked with a client for about six hours on Saturday (we left and went out to breakfast with his daughter and her bf at noon so it wasn't all billable hours) and then yesterday I went all out - groceries, errands, cleaned house, and did a huge amount of food prep. Finally realized around 3:00 that I had some latent hositility burbling up to the surface and that meant I was exhausted.

Today I woke up sounding like a man so I know I overdid but it was all good stuff! I'll walk the boys tonight, broil some burgers, and put my feet up. My MIL is coming to visit (and stay with me, not her son!) on Friday and then we're going to shop on Saturday. It feels like I'm getting a vacation because I'm taking Friday off! Gotta be healthy by then...

Faith, I have had thoughts of changing my eating plan as well because nothing has happened with my weight. It's frustrating, but I really think that the only other variable in my case is the amount of food I eat. I haven't really overeaten in a long time, but I think I need to mind my overall calories. I feel like the content is MY decision alone and that LC makes me feel good, but I also feel like I need professional help determining the volume! Time for me to do some research... Also time to take some Day-Quil!

That is right Kris, thanks! I do have to go over and have the nurse check me out. I had a rough weekend with pain in my breast and I have a blister or something that looks kind of yucky. I know I haven't checked in much on here. I didn't have too bad of a weekend as far as staying on plan. Just didn't do any tracking. Will try to upday things soon.

I know I didn't post for either Saturday or Sunday. Here goes.

emoticon emoticon 1. Drink at least 8 glasses of water. Yes! Yes!

2. Track my food, even if I don't weigh and measure it. But weighing and measuring would be good, too. Nope. Nope.

3. Nope. Nope.

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon 4. Post on this thread, and another mile for posting on another thread. Limit of two miles a day for posting. Yes and yes and yes and yes!

5. Have veggies for both lunch and supper. Not on Saturday, because I forgot all about lunch! Doesn't apply to Sunday when I started a meat and egg fast.

emoticon emoticon 6. Get in some exercise or activity. Yes! Yes!

7. Read the Bible or other "spiritual"-type book. Nope. Nope.

emoticon emoticon 8. In bed by 10:30. Yes! Both nights! Didn't stay there, because my leg has been hurting so bad, but I did start out there.

9. No dairy or grain/meat and egg fast. I had dairy on Saturday and Sunday morning before starting the meat and egg fast.

That's ten miles for Saturday/Sunday! And five, if I remember correctly, for Friday. So I'll add another fifteen miles to wherever I was.

Oops, haven't posted for a few days. I did get my 4 extra walks in this week, but I did eat after 7:30 twice. So I am behind on the points I need to get my reward at the end of the month, which means I have some extra exercising to do this week. If only the weather would cooperate. We have snow in the forecast for tomorrow again. Today it was upper 40's and rained a bit. But the dining room ceiling is repaired and the dust and texture cleaned up, furniture back in so that feels good. Hope to hear from the insurance company tomorrow to see if it's worth filing a claim.

Haven't eaten many veggies the last couple days, and I am actually craving a salad big time! I don't remember ever craving salad, this is a good development! Funny what can happen when your taste for sugar goes away.

A meat fast sounds like an excellent idea, but I've got to use up those grapefruit. They're way too good to waste.

I'm going to do a high-fat meat and egg fast for a while. Maybe the rest of the month. So a mile for each day that I do that, instead a mile for no dairy or grains.

Faith,
I wanted to give up everyday when I was pregnant. I just felt horrible. You will start to feel better in time. For now, do the best you can. Focus on your health, not your weight.
