I have read several reports now that only blood ketone meters are accurate. But it is not necessary to use ketone strips as most people can tell when their body switches to burning mostly fat. I suggest reading on Jimmy Moore's site for more info on this topic.

If you want some critique of what you're eating, you need to open your Page and share your Trackers. We can't see it otherwise!

The name brand Ketostix, I think made by Ames™ (?) should be accurate. They're the confirmatory method used by clinical reference labs to check their analysers' results. I have never had good luck with the strips, however. Even when I was Very Low Carb, I never registered ketones. I see there are glucose monitors now which will also read *blood* ketones, as opposed to urine ketones. Perhaps that would work better...but they're pricey. The test strips, I mean. The monitors are about the same as the plain glucose meters, I think. The ketone strips run about $5 each.

I've been toying with the idea of a fat fast myself. I think it's a good idea...but I'm not all that crazy about cream cheese, so I'm not sure whether I could adhere well enough to make it work. I seem to be "stuck," though, so perhaps a few days of dedicated effort would be worth it. There's a recipe book for the Fat Fast which has some alternatives to the minimal variety of things usually listed for it. And it's only 4 or 5 days, after all. I should just buckle down and DO IT. hehe

Well, I have been zero carb for years, so I am the wrong person to ask about going too low, lol. However, I agree that increasing fat could also do the trick.

Yes, this is true, but if she's down to 20 or under a day now, because she's on Induction, wouldn't going much lower not be too good? Maybe if she added more fat in her diet. I know after I found that stuff out from you and I added more fatty hamburger meat and steaks and stuff to my eating, I started losing more weight and felt full to boot.

Good advice from HoundLover too!!

Yeah, the ketosticks don't work for me anymore either, but as long as I'm still losing weight, I must be doing something right! lol I like my candy/choc now and then too and found the Russell Stover SF ones. I could have 3 candies for 1 carb..according to the 'counts'. Meaning, you take the carb count, subtract any fiber, and subtract any sugar alcohols, which left 1 carb or 2 at the most, depends on the candy. The sugar alcohols were the BIG factor in making them so low carb!! So I was eating 3 a day and loving it. I now either limit myself to one or I figure half the sugar alcohol count in to my daily 20grams of carbs per day.

Hmmmm, I recently just heard about the FAT FAST. "Living My Dreams"(Faith) on here has tried it, among a few others and it does what it says it will do....and, that is to basically get you into Ketosis. It's for people hitting a plateau or having a hard time with induction. There is a link to it. Atkins has it too. Was in one of his books. I'll see if I can find it. It definitely isn't much to eat each day, but its only for 3 days ..or 5 days ...you choose. Like one meal might be 2oz of cream cheese. That's it! next meal might be a celery stalk with cream cheese. 5 meals a day and they add up to 1000 calories per day and I think 80% of those has to be from fat. In other words, you will be eating a lot of fat! lol In the meantime, see if you can find Living My Dreams. She can point you in the right direction. I'll see if I can find the link though.

I agree that the ketosticks are too in accurate. Do the best you can to exercise daily. You may be one of the people who will have to keep their carbs fairly low long-term because you can't exercise as much. I suggest using no Atkins products or sugar replacements at all and increasing fiber-rich vegetables (leafy greens) and fat.
I may take a while but hopefully this will get you back on track.
Maybe you could post one or two days worth of typical eating. You can maybe just cut and paste onto a spark blog and link it here. emoticon

I am not sure that the ketosticks are accurate for me. One day I will be in the next day out even though I ate the exact same thing. LOL It was like that before as well but I still check it.
I have thought about talking to my Dr. but he is completely against the Atkins diet so I am not up for another lecture. In fact I have had 3 dr.s now that have told me not to do this diet, I need to eat sensibly and workout. Yeah, if I could I would. I have done the 1200 cal a day diet in healthy food for years with little success. This worked for me last time and I want it to work again.

Now you can see why I feel so lost. =/

p.s.I don't have sugar alcohols often but that is very very useful information. Sometimes I just need a chocolate fix and I keep to the atkins products when I do but I can't say I haven't gone overboard on occasion.

Just saw your msg. Do you have any ketosticks, so that you can check to see if your body is in ketosis? You say you've been doing the Induction what...4 weeks and you keep gaining weight? Not that the 'sticks' are always accurate, but it can't hurt to look. Maybe your body chemistry has changed or you have a thyroid problem now. Just a suggestion: check with your doctor, tell her what's going on, and maybe she/he can give you some ideas of why this is happening.

I agree with Faith. We need to see what you are eating now, in order to maybe figure out what might be keeping you out of ketosis or adding weight on, rather than off. Also, I have found that each time you go back on Induction, it takes longer to get into ketosis. Be it age or body chemistry change or what, but I read it does affect some people. I know I am one! lol I still don't think I am in ketosis (the sticks say I'm not) but I AM still losing. I am finding that sugar alcohols ..I need to count at least half of them into my daily carb count because they were slowing down my weight loss. Apparently, my body thinks its sugar. So my SF candies...I've had to limit. Boo hoo!

Hi there! Unfortunately I started tracking on the Atkins site so I don't have any trackers to post right now. =( I have been mostly following what they suggest I eat on that site sans all the atkins products. I may have an atkins shake or bar once a week or so but over all it is mostly meat, eggs, veggies. I don't eat any dairy (except butter) and nothing with gluten / wheat.
I am disabled so I can't workout with cardio but I do a little pilates (I did this before when I was on low carb as well).
Please feel free to ask anything.

I started this journey a while back and though I had ups and downs I came very close to reaching my goal. I started into a new relationship, and as we all understand, got happy and content with were I was. I was still eating low carb but in the phase 4. Unfortunately I started gaining back. After a few months and a few pounds I knew I had to nip it in the bud quick but after 4 months of eating the exact same way I used to when I was losing weight (Back on Induction) I have gained another 6 pounds!
I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I tracked it before and am tracking again and they look exactly the same. I am drinking more water then anyone could possibly need. Same amount of movement.
If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. I am getting very depressed again as the scale is moving up during all my hard work.
