LOL too soon to tell, my sister tells me to give it a week or two. I keep forgetting to take the probiotics but I'm going to send for some kefir grains and learn to make saurkraut and pickles to help add other probiotic strains to the mix. I udnerstand a healthy gut has hundreds.

speaking of reflux, well, this wasn't really reflux, but for the last few days or weeks, I've been BURPING and dealing with other stomach issues. Finally figured it out. SPLENDA! tossed it in the garbage and am now on probiotics. I read that splenda creates a hostile environment in your stomach for the friendly bacteria that we WANT.
Inulin feeds the friendly bacteria though, according to previous reading so it's worth using.

thanks for the info. Kitty

Someone has started a thread on the Fat Fast. I think I'll switch my postings to that thread, since this may only attract people looking for recipes. Anyone who's interested, please follow!

After reading the information in the book I'm ready to try a 5-8 day fat fast. Her story is my story as far as finding the sweet spot of .5 to 2.0 I struggle to stay .5.

I tried some of the items and like then enough to keep on after a fat fast. Book says 8 days btw.

For those who like them probiotics and digestive enzymes....consider making kefir also. I use capsuls when I travel for easy carry but take a swig of homemade kefir blended with a handful of spinach, slice of fresh pineapple (great for digestion) and whey or kefir water from another grain. The kefir grains eat the sugar out of the whole, organic, grass fed cow's milk I use. So they eat the carb and I get the cream..win win. People have been known to drink home made kefir even when not able to drink milk. That would be a go slow to test the water issue.

I also make cheese and store some in whey/salt brine to use on salads.

Husband uses all of the above. I use what is needed. Husband use to suffer from reflux, and IBS. Now it is almost a thing of the past.

I started using digestive enzymes years ago...not him. I added probiotics...not him. He continued to get worse as I continued to use. Finally I told him...take two weeks..if you don't like what it does then quit. That was years ago...:)

type with you later. Junebug

I want to give the nod to Artisana brand, too. I love it! It has a mild coconut flavor, and it's definitely smooth and creamy. The texture reminds me very much of peanut butter...perhaps just slightly more firm (barely noticeable).

So far as hunger management, I would think this fat fast would specifically address that! fats are the things which satiate, after all. If you're trying to get 85% of your calories from fats, I think the hunger issue would disappear entirely.

I still want to explore the recommendations for duration for this thing. The downloaded book suggests "x" days (I can't remember how many at the moment), and evidently the New Atkins says a different number of days...I suppose Jimmy Moore has his own time period also. I want to compare them and make my own decision. It doesn't sound like anything lengthy... but it's also not something you're going to persevere through a "couple of days" and go back to your standard fare. I think my biggest hurdle will be to teach myself to eat every few hours. I go long hours sometimes without food - not because I think I "ought to," but because I'm just not hungry, or else the idea of food at particular moments is especially UNappealing. I'll have to ponder on't.

It sounds like several of you have at least a passing interest in this. Maybe we can launch into it together and have some support. I'll see what I can discover in further study and post here. If I do this, it probably won't be for at least another couple of weeks. We have time to contemplate.

I do take L-carnitine. I have no idea whether it has any effect on hunger. I only take the 500mg once a day, not with every meal. I also take probiotics and digestive enzymes. I presumably have an intermittently active case of GERD; I have scleroderma, and this is part of the syndrome. Luckily (?) I don't notice it. I did notice the esophageal stricture! An endoscopic exam showed a lot - I mean a LOT lot - of erosion in the lower part of my esophagus. I've been taking a couple of meds meant to help this...but I'm also trying to support healing with the supplements. Knock on wood: I haven't had any recurrence for at least 6 months that I know of. If I have a bad day, I have a med that puts a protective coating on the mucosal surfaces. The trouble is, for it to do any good it has to be the only thing on that abraded surface. That means nothing in your mouth for a couple hours before or after you take it. So it can be challenging to figure out when to use it. But the bottom line is that I haven't had to use any of it except for possibly one or two days in the last 6 months. Is it the other meds? is it the supplements? do I care, so long as it stops? (No! LOL )

Ennyhu...more info and commentary on the fat fast is welcome. I'm thinking I will probably try it, just finessing out details now.

Thanks, Betty! I hate wasting money on (expensive) stuff that I end up not liking anyway. I'll give the Artisana a try if I can find it locally.

Woubbie, You mentioned trying coconut butter, I have the Artisana 100% raw organic coconut butter here. It's not bad. I tried I think it was Nutivia coconut manna, which is supposed to be the same thing. It was NOT good to my notion. The Artisana is smoother and has a bit of coconut "flavor" to it, the Nutivia was really grainy, it was flavorless as far as I'm concerned. Actually, I ended up tossing it. The Artisana I'll put some on a spoon and just eat it now and then. You can heat it a little and it's softer to spread on something.

Anyhow, just throwing that out there for you....

Betty

I was thinking of trying the fat fast as well- I lost 10 lbs in the first 3 weeks of doing Atkins and then stalled... after 3 weeks of no further loss and huge amounts of stress in my life, I fell off the wagon and gained 4lbs in 1 week (ugh). After reviewing the book, I decided instead to first try a yeast free diet since I have been on frequent antibiotics in the past year and have also had a lot of stress in my life- not to mention my old diet habits. It's not going to be easy since means leaving out a lot of the things that make Atkins so likeable for me (cheese, mayo or anything with vinegar, mushrooms etc) but it makes sense that this could be the issue... something to consider for anyone else that has "stalled". Dr. Atkins also suggests supplementing with L-carnitine 500mg or more with each meal for those whose bodies are stubborn. Lets try to keep this going so we can see how things are working for each other...

Keep moving forward... progress not perfection!

I don't know that I've seen anything specifically address this, but I had been noticing for months that, though I never get full-blown reflux anymore there is always that sense that it's just below the surface, and I think for a long time I mistook that sensation for real hunger. The probiotics seem to make a difference, and now when my stomach growls it definitely growls! (I'm using "Nature's Bounty Advanced Probiotic 10" and just getting them at KMart. Don't know if it's the best or if there are better products out there, but it's still in the experimental stage for me.)

The inulin is in a Truvia-based sweetener I'm using called Sweetleaf, and I noticed from the very first day that it seemed to have a very mild appetite suppresant effect with me. Some people have bloating with it, though, so you'd have to proceed cautiously. Apparently our bodies don't have an enzyme to digest it, but bacteria LOVE it, some times TOO much!

maw, I'm having trouble with being hungry all the time and eating constantly. Where did you learn about using probiotics for this?

A lot, Kitty. Just a quick scan showed a bunch of recipes for non-dairy versions of things like sour cream and mayo that might actually make paleo doable for me some day. I might have to locate the "coconut butter" they referred to.

After the intro section there is a section written by Jimmy Moore detailing his experience with nutritional ketosis.

I don't think I'll be doing a full-on fat fast for a bit yet. Two problems: I'm still working on hunger management (gotten WAY better with probiotics and inulin, but still have a little ways to go), but it also involves total alcohol abstinence and while I could manage it for a day or two I don't trust myself much past that. (Not in the mood to set myself up for a potential binge! I'm getting there, slowly but surely, but I'm still not there...)

Exotec, check out Jimmy. Moore's blog. He's doing something similar and talks about the science behind it. It comes, at least in his case, from a book that we've all heard about, and you've probably read, though I don't remember which one.

Wow! this is great! I bought the .pdf version. Usually there are multiple things in ANY cookbook I can't/won't eat...but there are only one or two here that don't make me want to run right to the kitchen! yum.

The whole plan sounds like a possibility. Someone else here did a fat fast not long ago. I wish I could remember who! The .pdf refers to the New Atkins book for his original version of the fat fast. I have that here somewhere, and when I can locate it will see what further insight I can gather from that.

The things that tempt me here are two-fold:
First, I've hit a sticky place where I'm falling off the wagon more and it's slowed my progress; I don't like it!
Second, I seem to be craving fat and having some troubles with protein lately. Following a modifed paleo/primal plan, I'm doing a lot more "listening" to my metabolic nutritional needs. If I'm not hungry for (and in some cases actually averse to) protein and am instead craving fat, I think I ought to go with it. I'm at least interested to know more about it. The .pdf I have is pretty good information ~ but I don't like to rely on only one source.

I'm kicking the idea around, anyway. If anyone is interested in taking a shot at it, check the website or the Atkins book and let me know if you want to pick up the gauntlet!
