I had to be seen because I hadn't been able to go but 4 times in 30 days. I was told to add lettuce to my veggie diet and up my treadmill time. I had gotten sick for awhile and had decreased my treadmill time and had to gradually get back to it. The lettuce helped but prior to that I had used laxatives twice to go. But after having lettuce with some salad dressing and walked more, my body is getting regular again. It worked for me, hope you find what works for you.

Russell, they can adjust the Coumadin depending on how many greens you eat. It's about the balance not banning them. I did a lot of research for my dad. You may get to the point you no longer need to take it as well. I'd talk to your doctor to check about this.

Secondarily, I'd work on upping vegetables as well and ground flax is great! I posted a "faux oatmeal" I make or do a MIM.

My Flax Custard
Beat 1 egg in cold pan, add 2 TB cream, 1/4 cup ricotta cheese. Heat on med low until thickened. Add in 2 - 2 1/2 TB ground flax seed. Sprinkle with cinnamon, nutmeg. I like to add a drizzle of Walden Farms syrup.

I prefer methylcellulose (Citrucel) because it does not lead to a lot of intestinal gas. You can get it in capsule form. I take two capsules twice a day. I also take a tablespoon of ground flax seeds twice a day. I wash it all down with a glass of high fiber V8.

If all else fails, I use Miralax for two or three days until the system is moving again.

Thanks for all the information! I was just coming onto the boards to ask a fiber question. Since I have crohn's and no colon, I have the exact opposite problem. Eating low carb causes me to dump fluids so I need to boost my fiber to be able to leave the house. I also have to watch the greens because that kind of fiber can cause a blockage.

Russell- I can't take them because they're seed but alot of my friends really like chia seeds. They soak them in water and it makes a pudding like consistancy.

I take Metamucil Psyllium husk in the morning with my breakfast, usually mixed in with my protein shakes - I use 1.5 tsp each morning. Between that and the veggies and the fat that I eat, things seem to be doing well. You can get the Psyllium husk in capsule form too, but it's more expensive that way. Inulin fiber (Metamucil also makes this) works well for some people, however, I personally don't care for it, it seems to cause gas pains for me.

Russell, I forgot about the coumadin. Is it the Vitamin K in green veggies that affects the blood clotting?
Maybe psyllium is safer in that case.

Some people say that yogurt with live cultures works. It doesn't have to be Activia or whatever that one is that's advertised. Just plain, regular, full fat yogurt. It says it has 12 carbs, but there are those who say that the little beasties that turn milk into yogurt eat up most of the sugar and that it really only has about 4 grams per cup. You'd want to see what it does to your blood sugar, though. I'm sure that, like everything else, different people respond differently.

The more greens I eat, the higher the dose of Coumadin I have to take Birgit. Since it is rat poison, I try to keep my dose low..lol.

I will have to find something else for my fiber. A pill would be better than powder for me.

Short term I agree that Metamucil (psyllium fiber) should work.
Long-term I would increase raw vegetables. You can eat quite a few without going over on carbs if you stay with green, leafy ones like mustard greens, kale, swiss chard, collard greens etc.

I also buy fiber supplement capsules at Walmart. They are just psyllium husks in a capsule, sort of like Metamusil but in a capsule form and they are cheap. I take 3-5 daily depending on my need at the time. I also use Colace stool softener which really helps as well. It is over the counter and comes in generic or Walmart brand.

Sucralose is splenda--not a sugar alcohol, but a lab-created product some people prefer to avoid. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol, yes.

Metamucil's primary product is psyllium. Canisters of unbranded (cheaper and with no additives) psyllium are available in the natural section of some larger stores or anywhere that caters to veg*ns. You can also buy capsules in any of the larger grocery stores, in their vitamin/diet/diabetes supplement areas.

Too, there are other fiber supplement options beyond psyllium (husk or interior)--inulin is available powdered these days, I found it at Target. Glucommanan/konjac and some of the other vegetable gums...

I buy walmart brand capsules. I didn't look at the ingredients, but there would be no need to add any flavors.

I have had issues lately with constipation, and stomach pain, so went looking for a fiber supplement. I have no idea where to buy Psylium husks? Everything I saw was half sugar.

I finally got Fiber Well Gummies. 2 of them are 5 g carb, and 5 g fiber.. less than 1 g sugar alcohol.

Ingredients however are: Polydextrose, xylitol, gelatin, malic acid, natural flavors, color ( purple carrot juice concentrate, blueberry and carrot concentrates, annatto extract ), sucralose, fractionated coconut oil, and beeswax.

I planned to take 3 a day for 7.5 g of fiber, but I know xylitol, and sucralose are sugar alcohols, and polydextrose sounds like sugar. Should I trust the 5 g of carbs - 5 grams of fiber as 0 net carbs? Are these sugar/ sugar alcohols minimal?

What fiber supplements would you recommend, and are they available in a regular grocery?
