Thanks, Woubbie! Yes, Birgit was telling me how to maybe go look up the restaurant or fast food places and get their nutrition info. I'm going to try it. Oh, and I forgot, I DID have 1 teas of vanilla ice cream and 1 teas of key lime pie....that was in lieu of having ALL of it! lol After all, it more or less was my 'birthday cake',but the rest of my family enjoyed it. lol

Good going, Lady W! A lot of people end up caving when they go out to eat, never realizing that they had other options. If it's a chain restaurant (and sometimes smaller ones as well) you can check out their websites before you go and look up good low carb choices. I once went on a "Blizzard run" with some women in my office to Dairy Queen and managed to come up with something that fit into my plan more or less (basically it was a Fudgsicle)! Planning makes a big difference.

Ditto what Kristin said!! You ladies have these little bits down pat and it sure helps those of us who still relatively only know the 'basics' of what we read in an Atkin's book. lol Maybe that's one of the reasons why I had jumped back up two pounds this week. I weigh in every Wednesday morning! I also had noticed that my ankles were a little swollen. That usually indicates to me that I had had too much salt. I also think it was those candies too though. Will see what happens when I weigh in next Thursday (I'll be out of town on that Wed) Although, I may still be up because I 'cheated' a bit at my birthday dinner tonight! My Bad!! But, you would have been proud of me! I asked the waitress if she knew how many carbs were in certain food items. Do you know that she went back in the kitchen and brought out a book of nutrition info and looked up the foods I was considering cheating on!! lol So, I opted NOT to have a delicious pina colada, and NOT to have the fried shrimp, but did have half of a very small (seriously) baked potato w/some sour cream on it, and only 1 cheddar biscuit. Everything else (lobster, crab, shrimp scampi, sm lettuce salad w/ blue cheese(2 carbs!) and it was all delicious!! Oh, and I opted for a diet coke instead of water. Worth the no loss next week! but, maybe I'll get lucky! lol Thanks again for the info, Birgit & Maw. TTYL

Lady, it sounds strange (like eating fat to lose weight!), but you might want to try eating more sodium instead of less. There's something about eating low carb that makes your kidneys work differently, and you actually need more salt. And it's not just all the water we drink. It's actually something about the low carb diet. Here's a quote from Birgit (HoundLover) about salt:

Here is a short quote from "The Art and Science of Low-Carbohydrate Living" (page 240, 5. The Salt Paradox):
"When the human body adapts to a low carb diet, the kidneys fundamentally change how they handle sodium. Removing most carbs from the diet causes your kidneys to aggressively secrete sodium (and along with it, extra fluid). This is why many people experience a dramatic early weight loss with carb restriction. But this means that a continuous moderate intake of sodium is necessary to keep your circulation adequate to handle 'heat stresses' like hot weather, endurance activity, or even a hot shower.
If you are eating less than 60 grams of carbohydrate per day, you need to purposefully add 2-3 grams of sodium to your daily intake (unless you are still taking diuretic medication under a doctor's direction for high blood pressure or fluid retention). And if you do hard or prolonged exercise (enough to make you sweat), one of those 'grams' needs to be consumed within the hour before you start. AT or above 60 grams per day of carbs, this prescription becomes optional. However if you go out planning to exercise for 30 minutes, but find you have to stop after 15 because you feel lousy or light-headed, try it the next time with a cup of broth within an hour before exercising and see how things go."

This is followed by the recommendation to use bouillon cubes and consume 2 per day. I have found that most types have MSG, the one brand I found without is Rapunzel. Alternatively make broth adding one teaspoon of salt per quart of water.

Maybe I should add that increasing salt significantly in your diet will increase weight, possibly by 3 pounds or so, but this is ok, it helps the body to have more fluids circulating. The next paragraph in the book talks about weight fluctuations because of fluid changes. The recommendation is not to weigh as often to avoid fluctuations that are meaningless.

Birgit

BudgetMaw, that's what i heard as well...that they affect different people differently. I was also advised NOT to eat say...more than 3 or you might end up with diarrhea. So, I usually only have 3 a day...which I THOUGHT was only 1 carb for all 3! lol but, I am not sure how they affect me yet. I'm going to do the 'half' thing for awhile and see what happens. I really like having them. So, not eating them, probably won't work. Part of my problem is SALT! I think I'm a salt-a-holic! I am using the lightest, lowest sodium salt there is, looking at the sodium count on food labels and trying hard not to use hardly any. I know we need some due to all the water we have to drink, but I'm trying to keep my sodium level down.Believe me, I can tell if I had too much salt, cause my feet and ankles will swell up!! lol and, that's very uncomfortable!

I avoid those bars - there's a lot of ingredients in them that list as gibberish. I have found out that I can eat a Larabar (which is high in carbs but it's all fruit/nut carbs) and survive better on natural ingredients than frankenfood.

Today is a calmer day for me, but I'm buried in work. Taking a break now to stretch (I seriously LOVE this StretchClock thing!!) and check in. Back to decoding indecipherable shipping documents in an attempt to convert them to user-friendly invoices!

Ditto on the bathroom problems! I took 2 Atkins-type bars with me to jury duty a few months back and had one at the 10 am break and one at the 2pm break. Got to my car at 4:30 and could barely make it home!

My new go-to sweetener, Sweetleaf, seems to sit well with me, but I've read that the "filler" ingredient, inulin, gives a lot of people problems. Humans can't digest it (no enzyme for it) but bacteria just LOVVVVVE it. I'll let your imaginations fill in the blanks....

I can usually get away with eating one piece of dove dark chocolate. It has about 5 grams of carb (from real sugar). It tastes so much better than the Russel stover candy (which we have around because my husband is a diabetic). I have it with coffee after dinner if I feel the need for something sweet (which is almost always, lol). I also enjoy having flavored coffee with half and half in it...don't need sweetener. The smell is wonderful!
If I keep my activity level up I can still loose at around 45 to 50 net carbs a day. Everyone is different.

From what I understand from several sources, sugar alcohols affect different people differently. Some people can subtract them all, because they don't affect insulin. Other people have to count them all, because they affect insulin the same as sugar. Most people are somewhere in between. So I'd use counting half of them as a starting place, and see how it goes. If they still cause problems, then count more of them. If they don't, maybe you can count less. Actually, though, what I'd do is to just not eat the darn things to begin with, except in an "emergency."

Russell, that's exactly the info I was looking for. I thought that maybe those were slowing me down. Now I know why. But, let me see if I have this straight. This package of SF Russell Stover candies (choc w/strawberry cream inside) says: 3 servings(pieces)....Carbs are: 26,
Fiber: 0, Sugar Alcohols:25. So, you take half of the sugar alcohols=12.50 and subtract that from the total carbs=13.50, then divide that by 3. So each piece would be 4.5 carbs. Of course, if there is any fiber, you'd subtract that as well (& some do). Do I have this right? If so, then, I definitely need to figure differently in my carb count if I plan on eating them! LOL Thanks for finding that info!!

Interesting. That would certainly explain why they stall so many people and stir up cravings.

I'm finding that when I have one as a stopgap (like if I'm going grocery shopping on an empty stomach and I eat one to keep the impulse purchases at bay) the next day I start to think that I can have another "just because". That there is a slippery slope for sure!

Work is quiet so far. In the distance, though, I think I might hear something breaking loose. Hmmm. Could be all hell... Better get back on track asap.

Have a great day all!

If a food has more than 5 grams of sugar alcohols:
•Subtract ½ the grams of sugar alcohol from the amount of total carbohydrate
•Count the remaining grams of carbohydrate in your meal plan

So if a serving of the candy contains 15 grams of carbohydrate and reports 14 grams of sugar alcohol. Take half the grams of sugar alcohol (7) and subtract from the total carbs:
15 - 7 = 8 (so count the serving as having 8 grams of carbohydrate.

Supposed to be warmer today also. High of 34. I went to library yesterday, and got the new Grisham novel The Racketeer, and a sci-fi book by James Patterson Daniel X. I have read a lot of his mysteries, and wasn't sure it was the same James Patterson.

Today I just have to do my 90 minute walk, and not much else. Have a few shows on my DVR to watch, and some laundry to do.

Debb, I don't think Atkins has net carbs counted right. I was reading a post by Becky Hand, and she said to count 1/2 the carbs in sugar alcohols, because we partially absorb them. I'll try to go find that .

The easiest way to not get off track is to just eat real food, no sugar free food, no sugar alcohols, diet food (including pop), and especially " low carb " food. Test all of these to see if they cause issues. If net carbs is just carbs - fiber, you will do a lot better.

Sun is gone, though it was out earlier. Looks and feels like snow, but I think a possibility of rain is in the forecast. As hubby needed the van this morning, I didn't get the dogs to the park, but will do this afternoon, after I take the post.

Made a huge mistake eating an Atkins bar last night. I ended up eating the whole box. NOT GOOD. Okay, so my total day's carbs were still under 20, but the sweet taste got me started. NO MORE BARS FOR ME. (I am such an addict. SIGH)

Had some chicken this a.m. and have defrosted turkey slices for lunch. Salmon and lettuce with mayo for dinner.

At least I am catching up with the bookkeeping, and the packing is nearly done!

And it's Thursday!

It's supposed to be reasonably nice for at least most of the day today. High in upper 40s/lower 50s. Rain later today, though. I'll spend the morning at the public library, and will park in the parking garage and walk there. Then will walk to the campus library to get a book. Then home to do dishes and work on homework.
