I had a long and intense day yesterday and the only self-care I did was to flop on the sofa and stare off into space after doing my evening stuff (feed the boys, set up my latte, make my lunch, etc.). I am going to jack up the Thursday client's rates (the narcisstic dentist) rates and see if he'll fire me. Between this job, my normal clients, and HIM and his CPA I'm going nuts.

I will have to think on the March challenge, but I am thinking that continuing to emphasize some kind of self-care is a good idea in my case. Self-care shouldn't be so far out of my comfort zone, but alas, it's low on the list of priorities...

Checks for me for yesterday, too. The decluttering isn't showing so much at the moment, as I go through piles of paper I moved from the junk room to the living room to work on in front of the tv. But *I* know I'm making progress!

Checks for last night. I'm not sure yet what my March Madness will be but I'm considering taking a class of some sort. Burpee's look like March Madness to me, but no way will I be attempting Scandinavian fitness torture. If you can do those, Kris, I'm in awe!

When I was in the Army they liked us to do two pushups in the middle and called it the eight count pushup.

I agree with Kris, Faith. Radiation is way outside your comfort zone and that should do you for that part of the challenge! How about saying you're going to do one thing each day to take care of yourself. Somedays it might be exercise, other days it might be taking a nap. Let how you and the radiation are getting along dictate what you do.

My way out of my comfort zone, absolutely mad, wouldn't it be something if I actually did it goal is to do 5 floor pushups - in a row! - by the end of the month. The very thought boggles my mind. It's a hitch your wagon to a star kind of a goal, not necessarily a committment kind of a goal.

As for practice and consistency, I'm going to continue with the gratitude journal and reading the Bible every day, and will do at least 5 minutes of exercise every day. Aiming for 15 minutes, but that depends on how my knee is doing (very well, at the moment, I'm glad to say) and the weather, especially when I'm in Idaho for a week.

Faith, maybe your out of your comfort zone thing should be doing radiation this month and concentrate on eating on plan- helping yourself feel strong doing battle!!!! Maybe a non physical goal...like reading something in particular, or learning new recipes or Sokoku- you get my drift.

I want to try to come up with something that I will do for the whole month and something really different. This fat fast has been really different for me but I don't think it will be that long of a process. It should probably be something to do with exercise because I need that but I will be doing radiation most of this month and will probably be facing some fatigue as a side effect. Maybe my neck exercises.

Well, Woubbie, I guess you're elected! If you will, please?

Here's my idea of what a March Madness Challenge is all about.

Pick something outside of your comfort zone to do, then try it! It might be a new exercise or a new exercise routine; a new way of taking care of yourself, like journaling, meditation, yoga, or getting to bed earlier; a new food or new menus or new recipes, or eliminating a food (maybe sweeteners or dairy or alcohol or processed foods?); or putting yourself in new social situations by joining an organization or taking a class. Just something outside your comfort zone that you've thought about trying but just haven't quit gotten there. Or something you've never thought about trying before that sounds intriguing! You don't have to do it all month or every day. Just give it a good try.

Of course, it takes more than a new skill or routine to make it to March Madness. It takes practice and consistencey, too. So don't forget your basics of eating right and exercise, too.

Would you clean this up, please, Woubbie? Thanks.

Bwahahaha! She's still "wobble", not Woubbie... And yes, she does a good job of writing up our challenges!

Yeah, Maw, I'm thinking that the intensity of my job (apparently eight straight hours of thinking is more taxing than I think it should be...) might mean I actually need more sleep. I guess I need to lighten up on my expectations for myself - yet again!

And this morning I slept through my alarm again! I woke up and hit snooze three times and the next thing I knew it was 45 minutes later and I felt like getting up. Clue...

I like March Madness - how lovely to have a theme that I already feel!! LOL

OK, folks. March starts day after tomorrow! What are we going to do for a challenge? Here are some possible themes I came up with based on the month. What can you do with them to turn them into a challenge?

March Madness (pick something crazy that you've thought about but not done?)
Basketball (something about baskets?)
Ides of March
Spring
Palm Sunday (give yourself credit for at least one thing you do each day right?)
St. Patrick's Day
Daylight Savings Time begins
Passover
March (as in moving along?)
Spring Equinox (days longer, nights shorter = more things done right than wrong?)

As you can tell, I'm really reaching here!

Sounds like you're finally relaxing some, Lesley. Or at least aren't as tense as you used to be. Maybe you should just plan on sleeping later until you get caught up some? Workouts are great, but they're not the only way to take care of your body's needs!

Did my stuff last night. Almost didn't. It was about 9:00 when I got home, and then the cat wanted a lap and I decided to just skip it last night. Hadn't even done any decluttering as it had been a full day. But then decided I could sort some papers while I watched the news (which I had missed because of class), so did that. And then decided that since I'd done that I might as well do my 5 minutes of stretches and stuff. So I did them. And then I decided that as long as I'd done the decluttering and the stretches and stuff I might as well read the Bible and make a gratitude list, so I did those, too!

My knee is pretty much back to normal, but I'm going to treat it carefully for a bit. I fly back to Idaho a week from today, and I don't want to be travelling with a gimpy knee if I can help it.

Maw, sounds like you've done a killer job on your decluttering! Way to go!

Well, I did another involuntary self-care thing this morning - I slept THROUGH my alarm! Wow. I even turned the volume up but once I dozed off again, I was out. No work out again this morning, but I'm going to bed early tonight!

Budgetmaw - way to go on your decluttering! I've been doing a bit of that too, and I know how hard it can be to stay motivated to do it. But the feeling once it's done it's so great - I think there really is a connection between a cluttered environment and my mind feeling cluttered because once I have a clean area it gives me such peace. As flylady might say. :) Anyway, last night my son needed my laptop to do a Powerpoint for school, so since I had "nothing" to do I cleaned out the desk drawer in the living room and then some pocket hangers on the fridge and flung expired coupons, some from a year ago! Tonight I may start on my dresser drawers.

And 2 checks for yesterday - bed on time, wrote in gratitude journal.

Maw your junk room sounds like my bedroom (except the bed is clear). I've got so much old paper (20 year old bank statements, for example) and books, and stuff from other rooms, it's a major effort to get to the blinds to let some sunlight in.

Check for yesterday, housework and meditate to sleep. Good enough.

My decluttering and organizing has been going really well! I have half of my junk room cleaned out. I literally could not get more than a few feet into the room, and had to step over and around boxes and piles of stuff to water the herbs. You could barely see the spread on the bed because it was piled with stuff. Not neat piles, lots of stuff that had been dumped on the bed at various times.

Now half of the room is clear. The bed is cleared off. I even took the spread off and washed it! The closet is organized (it has all shelves in it) and there's room to put more stuff - neatly! - in it. And the other half of the room is not nearly as bad as it looks. There are bunches of stuff, but it's mostly organized. Like a pile of photo albums from my aunt's estate that I need to go through. That part of the challenge has a been a huge success, though it will have to be part of my March challenge, too. (Any ideas for that?) Of course, the 90/10 rule is in effect. 90% of the decluttering takes 10% of the effort - and I'm still in the 90%! But even if I never get beyond the 90%, it looks so much better!

Other than that, read my Bible and did my gratitude list. Did not do any exercise/activity because of my knee, but I was active around the house most of yesterday. Got in a lot of steps at any rate. I'm changing the exercise component of the challenge for the rest of the month. I will do something - at least 5 minutes of stretches and stuff like that. Or things I can do sitting down. But something.

Leslie, sounds like you got in your self care yesterday morning whether you meant to or not!

Faith, every challenge I've participated in since I found this team has been too much for the way I defined it at the beginning! Because these challenges are customizable, we each can set our own goals, and I don't know about anyone else, but I always, always, ALWAYS set too high a goal or build in too much rigidity at the start.

I think we should get points for our optimism, but we also have to recognize that life happens and we can't always force our way through exactly the way we planned. I really wanted to work out this morning, for example, and yet somehow I managed to turn the volume down on my clock radio yesterday when I dusted and I didn't wake up in time to work out! Give yourself some space to adapt physically, mentally, and emotionally, Faith - you have had a lot going on!

My whole day went sideways with a flat tire late in the day at work (right before I left), a stressed out client who has been crazy-busy, and too much residual noise in my head. Didn't do so hot with either part of my challenge...

What with all the surgery and the doctor's visits and the upcoming treatments and all, you're excused, Faith!

It is under the Induction area. I think I am the only one doing it right now. But other comments are there.

Thanks Kris. I do take commitments seriously so I am sort of bummed that I didn't follow through on this.

Hi all, I know I have been MIA on this team. I got tired and had a lot going on and hadn't been tracking my food, etc. I guess I failed on this challenge but I am doing the fat fast (see sticky thread) and will be on my way again. Maybe I am not good with challenges or I am making excuses. When I know I have to do something it seems that I just rebel or something. I don't want to be that way. I don't know how to make it work for me...

No check for yesterday, didn't make it to the gym. I'm going to have to start doing Sunday's workout in the morning. The place closes at 7:00 on Sunday, and that has led me to miss the last two Sundays.

Did some decluttering, read the Bible, did my gratitude list. Did not do any exercise/activity, but I'm giving that a pass until my knee straightens out. And it is better. I'm going to wait a couple of days before going to the doctor. Mostly because I have to get a paper written by Tuesday night and I just started reading the book (it's a review of a book, a scholarly journal article, and a website that I haven't looked at either). So I'm giving myself a check even without the exercise/activity. At least I did do a lot of moving around the house.

Wow, Leslie! You wore me out just reading what all you accomplished yesterday! But it does sound like you're in good shape for the upcoming week.

My 30 day Food Stamp Challenge ended yesterday. The food I ate for the month "cost" $103.13, slightly abover my goal of under $100. I put cost in quotes because I was pricing what I ate and not what I spent (so just the cost of one tablespoon of mayo, for example, instead of having to buy the whole jar which would be more realistic) and some of the prices were best estimates. And I used store prices for stuff that I really buy at the Farmers Market. It's always a fun exercise to do, and I always tell myself that I should continue to eat that way, but unfortunately it doesn't last very long. My average calories (1726) are a tad lower than I'd really prefer (closer to 1800), but my fat % (68%), fiber (14 grams) and net carbs (26) are spot on. And absolutely no ramen or mac and cheese or pasta or pb&j sandwiches or bread or potatoes or any of that "cheap" "budget" junk. And lots and lots of veggies and meat and eggs and very little processed food. And it includes 25 cents a day or more in my tea-with-splenda-and-gelatin that I drink because the gelatin is supposed to be good for me and is really more of an OTC drug than food.

Maw, it sounds like you need to get your knee checked out - the inconsistency in pain would mean something to a medical professional!

I derailed nutritionally today - I don't do so great with conscious self-care efforts when I think I don't "have time"... I had a near meltdown today trying to get everything done that I thought I needed to get done in order to go back to work tomorrow and feel ready to go back to work. I am exhausted BUT I have a clean house, I reorganized a tad in my little bathroom (MY bathroom), and my lunch is made, the groceries are bought, my week's meals are planned, the laundry is well on the way to done, and my work wardrobe is planned out for the week. That's a good boost towards solid mental health in the coming week, but it really cost me today. I think I need a housekeeper, a chef, a personal assistant, and a chauffeur... :)

Well, had a little food derailment last night. DH and I went out for dinner with friends, and I ordered a burger without the bun but I ate the parmesan herb french fries and shared a small piece of turtle cheesecake with him.

Got back on track today and turned down dessert at the family Sunday dinner at my parent's house. My husband noticed my mom commenting on that, and he said to me, "way to go, I'm proud of you!". So, thank goodness he came to my defense. I don't think she tries to guilt trip me, I think she just hasn't accepted that I'm not going to eat dessert there anymore and so feels compelled to comment on it.

Check for yesterday. We hiked uphill (both ways) so a good workout. Unfortunately, that particular trail isn't well maintained, and runoff has exposed a lot of largish rocks. Fortunately, it's steep enough that speed isn't required to go cardio.

My meditation efforts haven't improved lately, I think I may need to set aside a specific time, rather than trying to do it when I'm not doing something else.

Read the Bible and did a gratitude list for sure, and I think I did the decluttering. I seem to recall doing some before work, though maybe not the full 15 minutes. I'm going to give myself the point, anyway.

The exercise/activity will just have to be at the library, though I did as little as I could there. My knee is really sore. I'm wondering if I have something floating around in the joint where it doesn't belong, because sometimes it's just a bit sore, and sometimes it hurts from my groin to my ankle. Sometimes it feels like shin splints and sometimes it feels like lots and lots of red hot needles are poking into my knee. Sometimes I can't put any weight on it at all (I dug out my aunt's walker last night to get ready for bed) and sometimes it's just a bit stiff.

I'm giving myself both points for yesterday.

Eating not so hot today, but I did good on everything else...

Part 1 (self-care): cleaned house, paid bills, mailed the bills that weren't paid online, and bailed out on the dinner/dancing thing with girlfriends I was supposed to do tonight. I need down time!! I gave myself down time tonight. :)

Part 2 (move my body): I worked out for about 50 minutes on my ski machine while finishing an exciting audio book. I sweated a lot and did some crunches and then a dog walk and maybe that's why I'm so tired tonight. But it's a good kind of tired!! I feel my energy coming back.

While looking for the patterns (found some, but my mom must have the rest) I found a veritable treasure trove of books and vinyl records that I had periodically torn the house apart looking for! I finally decided that I must have donated them in a previous purge, but no!

Ate well today and actually got some walking in, so I'd get bonus points for the weekend, if that were possible...

As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks,
Each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits:
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were there going to St. Ives?

I've got a lot of that kind of stuff, too, Woubbie. When my great-aunt died, most of her "stuff" was put out for folks to take. What was left and seemed too good to go to Goodwill, I took, figuring that someone might want it someday. In other words, it will be up to my executor to get rid of stuff that I didn't get rid from her estate!

Worked away at the boxes and bags of old papers. Found a couple of goodies - the transcription of a diary kept by my great-great-great aunt while she was a nurse in the Civil War, and a family geneology going back to the 1600s. Actually, I guess, starting in the 1600s and coming forward, since it starts with one couple way back then and traces their descendents rather than tracing my ancestors. But it's still good to have found it. Also cleared off the top of my night stand, which is another horizontal surface that tends to collect papers and stuff.

And read my Bible and did a gratitude list and did some exercise/activity. So two checks for me, too.

Part 2: I worked out this morning, and I stretched after working out, and I stretched at work!

Another day of barely getting it done, but getting it done nonetheless.

My cousin tasked me with a little unexpected decluttering. His daughter in law is interested in old crochet patterns and he wanted to know if I still had my grandmother's books. I do indeed, kept in an out of the way drawer. Kept them out of sentiment, but they make me feel guilty because I have absolutely no intention of ever using them. What a relief to find them a good home that's still in the family!

Cleaning that drawer took a lot longer than I thought it would. Waaaayyy too much paper - I recycled a plastic grocery bag full of paper. Found 4 rolls of scotch tape. I wrap gifts in the bedroom and must have kept losing the tape in my disaster of a drawer! I had a spare desk organizer so put that in my empty drawer and now the remaining things are neatly organized in compartments! It feels so good, I think I'll tackle the other drawer this weekend! I wish my husband would become a flyguy - but no luck yet.

2 checks for yesterday - gratitude and bed on time. Although I woke up at 5 this morning and couldn't go back to sleep. By 5:15 someone in the neighborhood thought it would be a good idea to get the snowblower going (we got about 6 inches) so I just decided to get up and do something. Ended up writing down some ideas for a blog I'm thinking about starting.

Turns out the dog has another bladder infection so she's now on antibiotics for 2 weeks. Hopefully she'll be a little perkier soon. I think there is more going on with her though, so we'll see.

Yes, March challenge...only a week away! Can't wait for daylight savings time to begin.

Two checks for yesterday! (By the way, to you realize it's time to start thinking about the March Challenge?!)

I spent two hours last night sorting books for a big booksale at the university library. Mostly I lugged boxes of books around. I am sore today! And I'm counting that as exercise/activity! Went through half a box or so of papers that have been scooped up from various places at various time. (Most of them are from 2011, but there are an awful lot from 2010 and 2009, too, and some that are even older!) Found some things I thought someone else had that I wanted, so that was good. And read my Bible and did a gratitude list. The gratitude list was short but heartfelt. First, I made it home safely last night. We were supposed to have ice and snow and sleet and freezing rain beginning at 8:00. Fine, so I planned my evening around being home well before 8:00. Instead it started about 6:00 and I slipped and slid my way home. I wasn't the only one taking it easy, either. The average speed was about 20 mph instead of the usual 30-35.

Still hitting just the minimums, but I'll take it as a win. Walked, and walked away. :)

Glad to hear about all the decluttering going on this month! It's FlyLady's Habit of the Month if I'm not mistaken! My choir director's been flinging old sheet music at home and at church. He's so cute - calls himself a FlyGuy!

Go, Fluffy! Love to see those checkmarks accumulating!

2 checks for last night. And thanks to Woubbie and Kris for motivating me to get back on track with decluttering - I cleaned out 1 junk drawer last night. Yes, there is more than one. That's my New Year's resolution this year, to clear out clutter. Tonight I'm planning 1 drawer in my nightstand. Kind of scared to do that, we've lived in this house for 11 years and I don't remember ever cleaning it out.

At least it's a short course, Faith. You and God can handle it!

Did my exercise/activity yesterday, read the Bible, did my gratitude list, and spent about an hour sorting through papers. My usual practice is to pile up mail, envelopes, receipts and every other kind of paper on any available surface, then when I have to clear it off (like when company comes) I just jam it into a box or laundry basket or whatever I can find and stash it in my appropriately named junk room. Well, part of my decluttering is to go through all those recepticles of old papers and toss most of them and organize the rest.

I have been extremely over-emotional the last couple of days and couldn't figure out why. I was often in tears or on the verge of tears and had lots of angry voices in my head. Well, really just one angry voice - mine - and all on on subject, but it was jabbering away most of the time. I finally figured out that Dad died a year ago today (which of course I knew and remembered) and that it was bothering me a whole lot more than I thought it was. Like, I didn't think it was bothering me at all. Knowing what was going on didn't stop me from being over-emotional, but at least I don't feel so out of control! And I know enough not to talk to anyone about the issue that has me so mad until at least tomorrow, when I can talk about it calmly and reasonably. But I didn't eat over it, not even after I figured out why I was so upset and told myslef that it was ok to eat under those circumstances, even to overeat, as long as it was low carb. And I did get in my exercise in the evening, even though I had told myself in the afternoon that it was ok to not exercise (I had planned to go for a walk, which would have been good for me) because I was grieving. And ditto on the Bible reading and gratitude list and the decluttering. And I feel much better today.

I'm beginning to wonder whether all the little stained spots on the carpet are really from Tanny throwing up a bit or if they are from diarhea! After what I saw in the litter box last night, I know she has or had diarhea but I'm not sure what the little spotches on the carpet are. Yuck!

Dozed a little after the alarm went off this morning and did not work out - instead I used the time to get caught up on a couple of emails.

Part 1: For self-care, I backed away from the mass load of work on my desk a couple of times and took mental breaks. I also finished month end and that takes a huge load off my mind. I left work a little early for an acupuncture appointment that was wonderful, and I laughed a lot with my acupuncturist.

Part 2: No exercise today, but I stretched!

Keeping you in my prayers, Faith!

Checks for last night, wrote in my gratitude journal, turned off electronics and lights on time. Not that it did me any good since I woke up at 4 a.m. and couldn't get back to sleep - the one night in the last week the dog didn't wake me up - grrr! I think her trip to the vet yesterday wore her out, they said the dog in the kennel above her barked a lot. Should have some test results tomorrow or Friday. Tonight I am taking some cold medicine to knock me out and going to bed a little early. Hubby is going to have to get up with the dog if she has to go out.

Well I do need radiation treatments but a shorter course than usual. 4 weeks or 20 times. I guess it is not that big of a deal. The finances are a concern for me since my insurance only covers 80 % but God is bigger than the money issues so I am sure He will have my back and all will work out just fine.

Thanks for your well wishes!

You're doing great, Faith! I so hope they decide you don't need the treatments.

Kris, I am a complete bear with no electricity, stomping and growling and biting heads off. Grrr.

Got the bare minimum of walking done, might try to do a few more minutes tonight.

Left work on time, not a great mood, but better than when I got there in the morning.

Going to try one more time to FlyWash my guys. It's the only thing I can think of to do to get my son to get organized and get his stuff done. Unfortunately, it all hinges on my DH being on board at this point, so I'll have to engage in some serious browbeating tonight.

As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks,
Each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits:
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were there going to St. Ives?

Check yesterday for reading and check for tracking my food. Have a doctor's appointment today with the radiation doctor. My surgeon said I will most definiately need radiation but I am praying with the Zero Breast Cancer Recurrence Score that I got that I will not need it. Will let you all know!

Have a good day everyone.

No check for me yesterday. I purposely parked a ways from where I was going and got in some intentional exercise that way, but had decided that I needed to do 5 minutes of stretches and so forth to make it my 15 minutes. I didn't do it. I kept falling asleep in my chair so I finally went to bed. I did manage to read the Bible, though, and I think I did a gratitude list.

Ha, Chaser got up at 3:30 this morning to get a drink of water, and I've learned that if I don't get up and let him out at the same time, the little dude will pee on the carpet - probably without even waking up! GAH! Anyway, I was up at 3:30 letting both dogs outside... While it's cold they do their business quickly, but this summer I'll be begging them to come back inside!

Part 1: I took mental breaks at work today, and left on time.

Part 2: I did 15 minutes (thanks to a hard time waking up!) on the ski machine, 30 crunches, and a dog walk after work.

Must... keep... this... up...

Oops, didn't realize it had been so long. I took a couple days off work, and apparently a couple days off Spark. Two checks for last night, shut down electronics and lights on time. Also did 3 short spark videos yesterday morning since I wasn't at work to get my walk in. Should be able to get my checks tonight too, Cloe woke me up at 5:30 this morning and I'm tired.

You are all reminding me I need to get back to my flylady routines too!

And thanks for the email, Leslie.
