Short term goals are less intimidating than larger, distant ones. If I made a goal to lose 50 pounds by June, for instance, I know it would be impossible and I would become discouraged as I inched my way downward. Aiming for 5 pounds in a month would be more reasonable and if I didn't quite make it, would be less of a disappointment and I would be inclined to keep trying. My new years resolution was to exercise 30 minutes a day for the month of January. I expect I will continue that in February, but if I had made it for the entire year I might feel like it was too much to achieve.
