Keep in mind that Tim Ferriss also says that if you are over 20% body fat you should not be having after workout carbs. That said, sometimes you just need to have a little energy that the carbs bring, choose well and you are on track. :)

Hi there... In 4HB Tim suggests that if you are going to eat any processed starch you should do it within a half hour window after you work out. Today I had a slice of whole grain bread with 2 TBSP of natural peanut butter. I needed it. It felt right. I don't think that it will be wrong if you have a starch with one meal if you are also adding a few days of exercise to your regimen. I still say take your cheat day too.

Hello Prachi17!

Your question is an interesting one, one I think maybe a lot of folks who try the 4HB Slow Carb diet wonder about.

The first thing to realize about the slow carb diet is that there are just as many "do this" items as there are "don't eat that" items. It's a pretty ridged program where what you eat is concerened, but very flexible within that scope. So having said that, to follow the Slow Carb diet, rice and bread are totally out. This diet is kind of a mash-up of a paleo diet and a low carb diet like south beach. So the question becomes, do you want to do Slow Carb or do you want to try another diet.

One thing I have learned from reading 4HB is that it is OKAY to experiment! Even Tim Ferriss admits that most good diets will work if you stick to them. It's all all about what your goals are. His diet is designed to be fast and effective. If you follow the plan to the T than you are likely to have very good results, but you do have to sacrifice a lot of variety in your diet. You can add back some of the grains and breads but then you are doing something more like South Beach phase 2. Which is still a good diet, but it's not Slow Carb and it may not be as fast. BUT I will say it may be worth experimenting to see what is sustainable for YOU. If you just simply cannot live without those things you mentioned, find a GOOD nutrition program that has room for those things. But if your goal is to lose fat as quickly as possible, than you will have to decide on an approach that cuts out any foods with a high insulinimic response (like rice and bread) for most of the week.

Having said all of that, I think the others are right. If the menu you posted is all you are eating you are restricting too far and your body is likely starving! :) You need more protein in each of your meals, as well as more slow carbs. I think you'll find it is easier to do without the rice and bread until free day if you aren't feeling hunger pangs and cravings during the week. And then truly enjoy the foods you love on your free day.

Just remember, there are a lot of ways to accomplish your weightloss goals. Slow Carb diet is only one of them. :) Give your all and if you don't like it try something else :)

Thank you ...!!!!!! your posts makes perfect sense .. I stay in the diet till 5pm as soon i hit the gym I end up drinking vitamin water or something to give me energy ... then by the time i get home i say screw the diet and I will start" tomorrow" .. this makes me eat not just the bread but choc , fruit , cause in my head I am starting tomm :).. thats why wanted to stop this chain by saying this is my diet ..this way I at least stay away from choc and fruits and only eat 1 bread ..

However for 7 days starting today I am going to commit to 4HB and eat more .. I read your posts as soon as i woke up so drank the protien shake as well which gave me a total for 35 g P.

Thanks guys I will check in again tomm :)

Hugs

You're not eating enough, with or without the bread/rice, and I would guess that this is why you're blowing it, because your body literally craves the fuel it needs and makes it almost impossible for you to go without it.

Eating bread/rice daily will blow the 4HB way, but that's not to say it won't help you lose weight - the 4HB is not the end of all diets.

If you wanna give the 4HB another go though, here would be my suggestions:
- you need 4 meals a day, not 3
- breakfast is not enough protein. 2 eggs is 10 g of protein where you need 30. You can up the eggs, add something (I personally add 50-100g of tuna, canned in water to reach the breakfast requirements)
- What's in your salad? Vegetables alone are NOT enough. For each meal you need vegetables, beans/lentils/protein.
- dinner, again, not enough. The soup alone won't keep you filled. Add a protein to that an don't forget to have a 4th meal. What personally helps me get 4 meals is timing; I have breakfast, and then eat again every 4 hours.
- WATER! drink, drink, drink. Aim to pass the 3L a day.

from what I read, even just doing the 30 g of protein within an hour of rising, or preferably 30 min, should help significantly. Do I think this will work like he talks about in the book? Probably not-I think the idea of the "cheat day" is to shock the system, and the daily dose won't accomplish that. However, I'm also sure it's better than than getting all out of whack and till you go crazy. From the look of you food diary it doesn't look like you get any carbs (beans) with breakfast or lunch. It might help to add some of them earlier in the day. And it may bet you're just going too low with the calories-that looks pretty low to me so by the end of the day you may just be hungry. You might try changing up some of those things, but in the end it 's what you can do you can live with that will help you.

Good luck!

Folks,

I really need your thoughts on this. I started the 4HB diet and then quickly broke the rules .. I couldnt say no/couldnt control my self from eating atleast 1 bread or a 1/4 cup of rice

So I am thinking instead of having a cheat day what if i allow myself to eat 1 meal in which i can have a small quantity of rice or 1 slice of whole grain bread.

my breakfast is 2 egg omelet
My lunch = salad
My dinner = Lentil soup with rice or Bread with spinach curry

Do you think this will blow Tim's science out the window? Should i just suck it up and follow the diet ? I feel i cannot not eat indian bread or rice for the rest of my life ..:(

please let me knw ur thoughts
