Hi! I just wanted to add, all canned foods are preserved with salt, frozen is the way to go. I live in Canada and we have a wonderful spice company here called Epicure, no preservatives, no salt , no msg and they're all lovely! As a nurse i recommend, cut out the "mystery salt" which means using whole foods fresh or ones that have no additives, and read carefully the labels because msg is hiding everywhere. Go online check out the various other names msg has. Salt should be added to taste at the plate, and then go easy! Swelling is water retention, but not always caused by salt. Whole foods it what I recommend

Lee, Use the internet... I have lots of issues... I am always on the internet looking for solutions to help me in everything I feel I need help with... I have a swollen ankle issue (well, I guess you can say that I HAD a swollen ankle problem)... it was way worse than it is now. When I first started this diet, that was the thing I noticed within the very first 3 days that was a very visible improvement. And when I noticed that, well, I got online immediately and typed up food that are natural diuretics or something to that effect and got this list:
28 natural diuretics that'll flush out your excess water weight…
1. Green Tea
2. Celery
3. Parsley
4. Dandelion
5. Juniper berries
6. Asparagus
7. Artichoke
8. Melon
9. Watercress
10. A high protein diet
11. Cranberry juice
12. Apple cider vinegar
13. Nettle
14. Dandelion leaf tea
15. Fennel
16. Any Natural foods with high water content
17. Watermelons
18. Cucumbers
19. Onions
20. Garlic
21. Brussel Spouts
22. Beets
23. Oats
24. Cabbage
25. Carrots
26. Lettuce
27. Tomatoes
28. Horseradish

What are diuretic foods & How do they help me lose weight?Diuretics will not help you burn off ugly body fat but they will help you lose excess water or fluid weight but…
The 28 foods on this page are Natural diuretics that will flush excess water weight out of your body and also help you burn fat and the reason why these Natural Diuretics help you flush out water weight is because…
Natural diuretics are natural foods or herbs that allow increased flow of urine and thereby aid removal of fluids from the body and The main reason why you may need to flush out excess water weight is…
If you accumulated a lot of excess water and got bloated from eating too much salty and sugary foods or these bad foods and/or been on a low protein diet which can all cause your body to retain lots of water and…

Now, not all are on OUR list of foods, but when I looked at that list and found those that were? Those foods went immediately onto MY LIST of foods to eat. So, now I eat those foods on a very regular basis. ALL the time... turns out that these are alot of the same foods that are good for my diabetes (remember that post of mine in my blog somewhere?)... anyway... it all is healthy stuff.

As for your question. My answer would be to #1, start having her incorporate MORE foods that will help her in that area of swelling, which is just better for her situation... and then another suggestion... try to have her start minimizing ANY seasoning... I know it's boring, but when you start to let the natural foods shine through, the foods natural flavors then shine through, too... and they do have ALOT of flavor on their own... if that isn't a winning suggestion.... and along those lines, salsa is natural and has alot of flavor, red bell peppers are a strong flavor w/o any seasoning, etc... that's what I'm talking about.. not to mention that I use garlic, ginger, olive oil, you know I like my turmeric, indian spices, etc.. stuff like that... spices without salt. You got this! ;-)

then alot of the other suggestions that are about the spices would be great ones to consider.

So excited about the 17 Day Diet. It has truly taught me new ways of eating and being healthy. Although I've not followed the daily cycles since I finished Cycle 2 at the start, I do tend to choose only foods from all three cycles. I incorporate the added carbs as I can and we are living a 17 DD Inspired life! Getting us to goal!

My niece has Cavenders seasoning but the regular---it has msg but I don't know about the other. I like to make my own seasoning mixes when I can. Most are very simple. Sometimes you can find copycat recipes online too.
I think it is wonderful that you can help your sister! emoticon
I forgot to say; I know what it is like trying to help someone else. My Dad is 93 and has trouble cooking for himself. It's hard for me to help him since he is 2 hours away but all of us kids try to do what we can by shopping for him (I have 2 brothers in the same town as him) and making frozen meals to take to him so he has something for another day.

Thanks for taking the time to post ideas..
FP4HLoser :the GOYA that we have been using is the ham flavor in the little box that has the individual packets...I will have to check on the ADOBO...trying to help my sister eat healthier (along with my family, too)...she lives alone and went for years not taking meds for diabetes and smoking heavily...had a stroke last year and it is a miracle that she did not die...BUT she quit smoking and knows now that she has GOT to eat healthier...not drinking enough water put her in the hospital over New Yrs...and seems to be doing better about that...she has got to cook some healthy food. I am going to take her to the grocery store and do some serious shopping...just wanted ideas...we like the CAVENDER"S Greek Seasoning (blue with a chef on the front)...

Which GOYA product? I get Adobo seasoning and it doesn't have msg....regardless....you can't go wrong with onion and/or garlic! Sauted with mushrooms and onions works too! emoticon
I also buy canned with no salt added but I mainly use the frozen or fresh.

I buy no salt added green beans (like Del Monte), then I saute onions and garlic in a little bit of olive oil then add to the green beans. I used to do fry a piece of bacon then saute onions in the grease and add that to the pan but not anymore.
Another option would be Mrs. Dash or other salt free seasoning but like you said make sure to check for no MSG
Oh, another thing I've done in the past is to cook the green beans then drain and stir in a can of no salt added diced tomatoes. Hunts has one that is Basil, garlic and oregano.

Personally I can not stand frozen green beans emoticon

My sister is having trouble with swollen ankles and is looking for something to season canned green beans with that does not have a lot of salt...what do you use to "season" your vegetables??? Maybe frozen is better than canned....we have always used GOYA, but when I read the label the first ingredient is salt and it also has MSG in it which is supposed to "mess" with your metabolism...any ideas for seasonings???
