Kathy - Hope your vog clears up soon! Hooray for you for going to the gym. Way to go!

Betty - Woo hoo for your cardio exercise. Your determination will serve you well! I understand finding an alternative when the weather is not cooperating. By the way, emoticon too!

I went out to dinner today with a group of friends (12 of us all together). I ordered grilled chicken, steamed broccoli, and a salad with dressing on the side. The down side to eating out for me is always the high sodium content in restaurant food. I know it will pass in a few days, but I don't like the feeling I get from so much sodium.

emoticon Hope everyone is doing well as we enter this new week. emoticon

Boy!! We've been dealing with VOG!!! That's a combination of no trade winds combined with volcanic ash (from the big island) blanketing the island chain. It's made it tough to navigate! Nonetheless....I put in an hour at the gym today..... Some time on the bike and the rest in the pool....... Am determined to beat this disability, I am!!!

June - I understand your cheat day. I strayed pretty far from plan today. That happens sometimes when I am tired and pressured to get a lot done. That is what happened today....lots to do and not a lot of energy to get it all done.

Well, I did get a lot done today. But I didn't do great with my eating. And I "craved and caved," so to speak. This is the first time I have had any cravings in quite a while. Moving on to a successful day tomorrow.

Tammy, glad things are going well for you. I did a bunch of household stuff sort of, I went through all my Christmas stuff and organized my storage area. Feels good.

I have been doing pretty good, I did have a cheat day today but will continue on tomorrow. I really want to jump on the scale but I am not sure it's a good idea yet but it is motivating to see the scale move, even if its only .2 on the scale

June :)

Sparkjames - Woo hoo on your wt. loss! I agree that good news at the scale is highly motivating. Your doc sounds very wise. Keep that momentum going!

June - Sounds like you are doing great! I understand adding things to help stay on track. I do the same and still have found success...being what we are adding is still protein and not unhealthy processed junk food. Keep your momentum going too!

I am doing well. My dinner challenge worked out ok...not totally compliant for sure, but again, I made wise choices and did not over eat and had no cravings afterward. Chicken is on the menu here for tomorrow, along with a big healthy salad.

emoticon Let's make this a great weekend friends! emoticon

4 days down and I am doing pretty good. I did have a little bit of ham twice, once on a salad and once in an omelet. I know it isn't part of cycle 1 but if it keeps me on this diet i'll be doing better than falling completely off. I also had some gravy with my turkey yesterday and had some regrets but I ate compliant the rest of the time.

I sort of wish I had jumped on the scale to see the progress, the first days are always the best and so motivating.

How has the new been to everyone else?

June :)

Right on. Happy 2017 as well. Hope the new week is continuing forward. I also took my weight and haven't done that in a while. Well, i lost a good amt of weight. I praise God for that. It definitely is motivating to continue forward into the next level this year. Started to bring back using a food/drink diary, treadmill and light weights. One thing that i think is a breakthru as far as treadmill, is to split the workout throughout the day. Instead of doing a 60 minute walk or run. Do 15 or 20 minutes at a time. It makes it less intimidating and goes by quick. You can do that in exercising but not with food. Food should always be less as the day ends. That was good advice given to me by a Doctor.

Woo hoo June! Way to go. Usually the first few days are the toughest. You will make it. We can support each other.

I am very happy to report that I weighed in today, my first weigh-in since before Christmas. I am so pleased that I stayed the same....didn't lose, but didn't gain either. I will definitely count this as a victory. I am on track today and feeling strong. We have a special dinner tomorrow evening that will present some challenges but I am resolved not to let it completely derail me. I know there will always be "special occasions" that crop up, and I am firmly committed to make wise choices and keep the momentum going.

Here's to all of us getting healthier and feeling better in 2017! emoticon

Tammy, got my first day in the books and i did pretty good.

I do have a headache and I am sure my body really just wants some carbs. I am hoping for strength to get through the first week or so. I know I can make it if I get past the first week.

Hope you had a great day too!

June - I hear you on the scale thing! I weighed in at the beginning of the holidays and was actually down a few pounds. I plan to weigh in early in January as well. My eating is definitely healthier than before I found this diet. Now I need to get a little more serious about staying the course.

Wishing a great weekend to all!

Tammy that ticker is old and 89 days unhealthy eating is more like it. I will update it on the 2nd but not sure what I am going to do, I won't weigh myself until I know I am in the safe zone. I am really afraid of what it might say

June - Of course you can check in here! It will be great to keep up and support each other. Several members here have done various modified versions of the 17DD. We don't stand on ceremony here. Will look forward to your posts and progress. I like your ticker....very motivating.

I am doing ok, especially considering it is the holidays. I will be back full force on the 17DD as of Jan. 2. I need that jumpstart of C1 and think this will be a good time to get it going, though I will have to navigate a dinner challenge on Jan. 6, already on my calendar. I have learned a great deal from the concepts and premise of this diet and I can apply these concepts even if I deviate a bit from the plan.

The weekend is almost upon us. Let's make it a good one and a healthy & safe one, friends.

Sparkjames - I have found conflicting info on the impat of night shade veggies on folks with RA. I don't avoid them completely but do try to stay away from them when I possibly can. Glad you did well with eating over the holidays. Same here. I strayed from plan but remained conscious of what I was eating and made primarily wise choices.

I am doing well today and actually am a bit surprised that I had a burst of energy today, given my recent RA flares. I went out to eat with friends...had grilled salmon, a salad, and steamed broccoli....black coffee..no soda, no alcohol...and lots of water. I also grocery shopped so again we are well stocked with compliant foods. We have potential for bad weather later this week and over the weekend so I was highly motivated to stock up now. That way....no excuses...healthy food is here....and that is what I will eat. I ran a few other errands as well today which sometimes really would wipe me out. I am tired now but not as exhausted as usual, so that is a huge victory for me.

Here's to a great last week of 2016 for all of us!

i didn't realize peppers were not good for those with RA. I didn't do too bad with overeating during Xmas. I'm looking forward to starting some new cardio and light weight training with the 17DD food regiment. Hardest part is starting so i will try to get that going sometime this coming week. Happy New Year to you too Tammy and everyone.

Lynne (Leannrocks) - Welcome back. Like you, I have kept off the 35+ pounds I dropped on this diet over 3 years ago. I still have a long way to go and often stumble but find that this is by far the best plan for me. We are glad to have you back here. Please remember to spin your pennants on your start page for our team. We are a small team that has been very quiet lately, but we are still here nevertheless. Looking forward to your posts and to sharing this journey with you as we make more strides in our healthy lifestyles.

Sparkjames - I looked into the cayenne and found (or should I say was reminded) that it comes from a night shade veggie (a pepper) which is not supposed to be good for folks (like me) who have RA. So I don't think I'll be trying it any too soon. I might ask my rheumatologist about it when I see him in March.

I had a good day today for eating but did not get in any exercise as my RA is flaring just a bit and my energy level was rather low. Tomorrow I have a lot of errands to run and then have dinner plans with some friends. I am expecting to order salmon and steamed broccoli, an old stand-by for me at the restaurant where we are going.

Here's to a great week for all of us!

Hi everyone, been months since I've posted to this board. Do you find that anything social media-like is a time vampire? I am gearing up to start cycle 1 again on Jan 1. I had big success with 17DD in 2011, losing 35#, which I have let return. One thing I remembered about that time is I spent more time cooking than I was used to. Maybe this time I can do more prep work to have things on hand, like turkey patties or soups.

Best wishes for what is a hectic week for some!

Hi Tammy: Did you find anything in regards to the Cayene? I only take One a Day tablets and usually its more one every few days. ;) Should try to take it regularly.

Thinking of the new year and what would be another step going forward. Probably will go into more cardio/light weight training. Just trying to build off of this diet and going forward. Have any suggestions?

Sparkjames - Thanks for mentioning Mod Pizza. There is a new Mod Pizza less than 2 miles from my home. I have passed by it but haven't patronized it yet. I will have to give it a try soon. Interesting too about the Cayene supplement. I take many many supplements already...mostly to fight inflammation from my RA....I take high doses of omega 3 fatty acids and also cinnamon, turmeric, vitamin D, vitamin E, magnesium, glycomarine (comes from a green lipped mussel), a probiotic, and vitamin C. I plan to look into the cayenne supplement. I used to be a fan of hot spicy food but have gotten away from it recently. I agree with you. I cannot imagine going back to unhealthy foods.

I am doing well and am compliant for the most part with only some slight deviations. No real challenges have come my way lately so that makes it easier for me to stay on track.

I'm doing well too. Nothing much new to add other then i continually meet people who are also interested in improving their diet/health. Met a gentlemen who is in great shape for 79. He is very active and mentally strong. He turned me on to Cayene supplement. They are supposed to be good for opening up the heart valves. I like hot food and try to eat in moderation. There's a jar of sweet/spicy jalopenos that i really enjoy as well as most salsas. Kefir is probably my 'drink of the year'. Whatever it does to my stomach feels really good. I'll take my weight at new year and see where i'm at. I can't see myself going back to any unhealthy foods. There's a really good healthy pizza place called, Mod Pizza. Highly recommended.

Right on. I'm also back to my normal routines. I found a couple good foods.
I'm surprised how much i like Kefir. Its a yogurt-type drink. Thought i was not able to drink it for its sourness, but its not bad at all. The Trader Joes Complete Oatmeal tastes like half quaker oats/half cream of wheat. Good combination. Also the Tahoe Trail bars just taste awesome to me.

Thats good. As long as we eat some kind of probiotic. I did read thru the section on Probiotics in the 17DD. All the labels GMO/Gluten-free are not just labels but have some virture. I don't think i'll ever be a vegan but definitely more in that direction with less diary and non-organic foods within the 17DD foods. This week i'm gonna take a little break. I will eat bread especially cinammon morning buns and all the good thanksgiving stuff. ;) But, i won't 'overeat'. :)

Sparkjames - Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours as well. I am interested in what you are learning about gut health. Please feel free to share info and/or links.I usually get my probiotic in in the morning with Breakstone Live Active cottage cheese. It is a little more expensive than the regular cottage cheese, but it is worth it to me.

I had a great day today after a not-so-great day yesterday. Scale did not show a gain today (or not yet maybe is a better way to say it). Since I got right back on track today I don't think I did too much damage.

Thats good. Me too. I think i'm getting used to it. Starting to learn more about Gut Health and trying to bring in more of that into the 17 day Cycle. Its interesting all the GMO, Glutten-free, Dairy-free and other labels. Its important to have pre/probiotic as regular part of diet. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Sparkjames - Thanks for the info on the tuna. We do not have Trader Joe's in our area. We recently got a Whole Foods store which is not exactly close for me, but is somewhere I hope to shop occasionally. I will look for the Skipjack tuna there. I have never had sushi either. I guess I live a rather sheltered life emoticon but I am interested in trying the tuna.

I had another great day today. I am totally on track and feeling good. I notice a direct relationship between how well I feel and how healthy (and compliantly) I eat. I had fish for dinner tonight. Tomorrow I will have Thursday's left over chicken.

Here's to a healthy compliant weekend!

Your welcome. My fave is Peanut Butter.

I prefer to have it with English Tea. ;)

Here's the Skipjack tuna i buy. It is more 'red' in color and a little more 'fishy'. Would describe it as slightly simular to maguro sushi cooked then the taste of 'Chicken of the Sea' if you know what I mean.

Sparkjames - Thanks so much for the link to the protein bars. I already checked it out and am very interested in getting some. Do you have a favorite flavor? I looked at the nutritional information, and it seems very reasonable. I have not heard of Skipjack Tuna. I would be all for anything with less mercury. I limit my tuna intake for that reason. I take Omega 3 supplements religiously so the less Omega 3s wouldn't be a problem.

I have had several very good and compliant days. I plan to weigh in on Saturday to keep me motivated as I have 2 dinners (actually a luncheon and then a dinner) to go to on Sunday. I have been getting in some extra walking which is great for me because I have so many issues with my legs. I use a cane in some instances but when I can walk with a grocery cart or a similar cart I do much much better. Today I grocery shopped and did extra walking on purpose. I am a little tired now, but no worries....chicken is cooking in the crock pot so I should be just fine.

Hi Tammy: Yes, skipping C3. I feel back on the saddle again with C1. Will just continue going back between C1/C2. Won't be perfectly strict when on C2 though and will probably be a mixture with C3. So, maybe will call it C2.5. ;) I've been eating more Skipjack Tuna with my salads. Its a smaller tuna with less mercury then albacore but slightly less Omega3s. I also like this protein powerbar. Hope you're doing well.

Sparkjames - wow how time flies. Back to C1 for you already! Are you skipping C3? I did C3 as prescribed my very first time on the diet. I did not lose any weight on C3. I love my green tea, especially now that the weather is cooling off a bit....but I drink it in the summer as well.

I will have a struggle tomorrow as I am going out of town with a friend to attend a church concert. Not sure what we will go about eating. Will just have to do my best. Looking forward to Monday when life (and eating) returns to normal.

Have a blessed Sunday!

Hi Tammy: Doing well. Going back to C1. I met a guy who has diabetes and he told me alot about what his cardiologist instructs him with. Its pretty much the same thing with diet that we've heard. I think the first time i went thru C1 it changed my body's carb 'dependency or habit'. I hope this time around C1 will be become more a norm. Will drink alot more green tea this time around plus my fave ginger. Hope things are well with you too.

C2 is definitely my favorite cycle. I agree with you Sparkjames that it is a loosening up of sorts. I also agree about food not controlling me and that is one of the reasons that I appreciate this diet. It is all healthy foods so our bodies are properly nourished and it (for me) has created very healthy habits....in terms of grocery shopping and eating. Over time it all becomes second nature...from the lemon water in the morning to my green tea during the day and of course the compliant foods as much as possible.

I really like Asparagus as well. I'm on C2 Day5. It feels like a 'loosening up' for sure compared to C1. The whole thing with food to me is not just the weight loss but just not being so 'mastered' or 'controlled' by food like a food addiction. Getting to that place where this doesn't feel like a 'diet' but more a norm of healthy living. Its the same when i stopped eating red meat for over a year. You just get used to it and i don't miss that at all.

Sparkjames - Congrats on your successful transitional day! Way to go!

I had another really good day. Got some fresh asparagus to eat with my turkey burgers. Both were delicious. I could eat the asparagus like candy. Tomorrow will be a bit of a challenge but I am up for it. Coffee hour after church can be tough if there isn't a fruit tray or a veggie tray. Usually there is fruit. Sometimes I take along a hard boiled egg just to be safe. I think I might do that tomorrow.

Here's to a great Sunday for everyone!

Ok, will do. I read up on C2 chapter and it opens up a good amount of food. I did the optional transition day cleanse. It was actually a piece of cake. Found a really good healthy organic juicer/smoothie place and had 2 juices for lunch and dinner. They're so good. I think this is also great way to go incase you have a bad day and want to get back on course too.

Sparkjames - Continuing on with C1 when you should be on C2 is not recommended. This was drilled into me when I was a 17 Day Diet newbie here on this team. Many Sparkers who were active on this team at that time stressed the need to rotate through the cycles at least one time. So I encourage you to move on to C2 as appropriate. I have never done the transition day as it was not part of the diet when I started out. I know some folks who do well with the transition day. Not sure that it would be for me however.

Today I am very much on track and feeling super.

Thanks. Day16. Will try to read the C2 section of the book today and prep. I think its C1 every other day. Wonder if people have just continued on in C1 after 17 days.... I'll check the Cookie recipe. :) I'm gonna do the optional Juicer transition day on Friday. Have a blessed day!

Sparkjames - Protein bars are not allowed on C1. Have you tried Dr. Mike's Power Cookie recipe from the book? That might serve the same purpose for you. I, myself, have never made it, but I recall other team members a while ago mentioning making the recipe and enjoying the cookies. The cookie is not a C1 food (it has rolled oats in it) but it might be helpful for you for C2 and going forward to C3. Hang in there. You are almost at C2....my favorite cycle!

Today I remain on track but feel a little tired. I think I am still recovering from the very busy weekend I had.

Sparkjames - I find that when I am shopping for C1 I feel so proud of how healthy my shopping cart looks with all the clean foods. Glad you are doing so well.

I deviated tonight because I was at a church reception....but I did make some wise choices including the fresh veggies on the veggie tray...and more.

Will be at a dinner at the church tomorrow evening and a banquet on Sunday as this is a special weekend celebration commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the parish (a parish I used to attend & still have many many ties there).

Starting Day10 and feeling good. Usually getting started is the most difficult part for me and hopefully my body is getting used to the carb-deprivation. Been sleeping a little longer too. The change in food requires me to change my grocery-habits. Trying to find and discover more foods that fit C1.

June - Good for you for starting out your day so well. My morning definitely sets the tone for the rest of my day. I love eggs in the morning. I read somewhere that when a person eats eggs for breakfast it is likely that the person will consume fewer calories for the day (as compared to someone who doesn't eat eggs for breakfast). I don't know if this is documented with research, but i know that it seems to hold true for me.

I am having a good day so far. I grocery shopped this morning for some good sale items at a grocery store nearby, but one that I don't do my regular shopping at. I just shopped the sales and did very well.

June - Always good to do your best in whatever situation you find yourself. Sometimes it is ok to take a break as long as we don't do too much damage to ourselves, right?

I had a pretty good day today. I was tempted to go off plan because I barely had time to cook healthy today. But I found some leftover chicken I almost forgot about....it saved the day for me!

Wow Sparkjames....excellent post....chock full of helpful info. Thanks so much for posting this information.

Today I am totally compliant as I was yesterday as well. I love this feeling of being in control and not feeling bloated or hungry. Challenge tomorrow as we have a pot luck brunch after church. I am counting on having fruit salad and will probably take a hard boiled egg with me since most of the egg dishes people bring have carbs (they bring breakfast casseroles with bread or potatoes in them). I will likely make a veggie tray to take for tomorrow so that will fill up my plate with more healthy options.

Day4. I was looking thru the FAQ and just wanted to share this today from the doctor. Reasons why lack of weight loss on this diet.

1. Underhydrated
2. Breaking the strict rule for “no carbs – like fruit – after 2 p.m.
3. Not practicing portion control, especially when the starches and carbs are reintroduced
4. Need to increase amount of time and intensity of cardio workouts
5. If you lift weights, use lower weights and more reps with longer wait time between each (muscle is heavier than fat and will cause a weight gain)

Also, he recommends to make raw popcorn then the pre-packaged. I've been snacking on those alot when 'picking'. Veggie-wise, trying to emphasize more Alkaline types. Read Cancer cannot exist in an alkaline environment. So, Kales, Brocollis, Brussel Sprouts, Asparagus, etc. All good things will make more often. Hope this helps.

Sparkjames - Yes, planning and prep are important. I applaud you for wanting to follow the plan as closely to the "t" as you can!

June - Kudos for not giving up. If we gave up every time we had a blip, where would we be?

I did ok today but was not perfect....tomorrow my friend is coming to visit, so I will have to be careful about where we decide to eat if she wants to eat out. I'd be fine if she just visited and then went home to have dinner with her husband, but I'm not sure what her plans are. Wish me luck for staying as compliant as possible.

Thanks Tammy for answering and the welcome!

I have no issues cutting off the Tortilla. Want to follow as closely to the 't' on this. First day was not bad. Noticed at least a few times i wanted to 'pick' things out of the cupboard. Need to stock up and prep more vegetables. Day 2...here we go. :)

Tammy, I cheated! I went out to watch a football game and ended up having 4 beers which made me what to eat crap today. The only thing I had that was good for me was an apple. I am jumping back on tomorrow. Just gotta get back on, previously I would just give up and try another time but I gotta stick with it!

I am glad you stuck with it, at least one of us was good. Here's to a successful day tomorrow for all of us!

Welcome Sparkjames!

Tortilla chips are not a food on Cycle 1. I use romaine lettuce leaves instead. I will say that if this is a deal breaker for the diet for you, I suggest following Dr. Mike's 3 bite rule......have just 3 bites of whatever it is that you think you need to succeed....but only 3 bites and only once a day for one and only one food. I have done this and still lost weight. I don't know if my weight loss would have been faster and better if I didn't do the 3 bites on some days, but for me, it was more important to keep with the diet with just the 3 bite blip.) I know we are technically not counting calories, but since I like to log my food here on the Spark People tracker I do log the food. Often my calories are under 1200 which for me I think is too low generally. (Maybe ok for a day here and there but overall I still seem to need about 1200 calories a day. I still lose at this calorie level.)

Hi Everyone: Just joined and recently picked up the book. I think i understand the cycles. Can you eat Tortilla type of chips like what you use for a Turkey Taco shell on Cycle1? Are you also keeping track of your calorie count? For those that have been losing, have you been eating 1,200 calories or is that too low with this type of diet? I was able to handle 1,200 earlier but that was with carbs/breads, etc. Thanks!

I am very much on track today and feeling great. I feel stronger and have more energy than I have had in about a week. I really think the clean eating of this diet makes a difference in my health. No worries about temptations today or tomorrow. I grocery shopped today and stocked up on healthy veggies including salad fixin's, so all systems are go!

How about you?

June - Congrats for not caving!!! I depend on string cheese at times too. And I find it pretty satisfying.

I am on track today but Sunday was a little tougher. I stuck to veggies and meat at the dinner but the chicken was in a creamy white sauce (not sure what it was) and the beef was in a gravy. I skipped dessert so that was a small victory. No challenges till Thursday when a friend is coming to visit. I should be able to manage that pretty well though.

Let's keep this going. I know we can do it!
