Chris - Enjoy your day trips. A relaxing get-away sounds very inviting! (My trip was great...but not relaxing at all.) And WOO HOO indeed for passing up those donuts. What a great success for you. And you are so right. It is so worth it. We are so worth it.

I grocery shopped today for healthy food for the house and for our traditional Eastern European (Russian) Easter foods. I will spend most of Saturday cooking (ham, kielbasa, a "cheese" made from eggs and milk, etc.) I purchased the Pascha bread from a local church. I will "indulge" in these foods but will not over do it. I feel way too good these days to ruin it by overeating. The sodium in the ham and kielbasa is my biggest concern. I will have a small piece of bread but do not expect to be too tempted by that.

emoticon Easter blessings to all! emoticon Will check in over the weekend as time permits. emoticon

Welcome Back Tammy! Sounds like you did really well on your trip! emoticon

I have something to shout out about today! We had two birthdays in the office the last two days, and of course, donuts were part of the celebration. I was able to pass on those both days!!! I went in and said my "Happy Birthdays" and then excused myself, so I wouldn't be tempted to cheat! That's the first time I've been able to do that in quite a while. I had a bowl of steel cut oats instead, which was more satisfying, and instead of guilt, I had pride in the fact that I stayed strong and didn't give in to temptation! emoticon

My DH and I are going on a day trip tomorrow, and Saturday, so it'll be hit and miss with the internet connections. Hope everyone has a very blessed Easter! emoticon

Stay strong my friends... it pays off in the long run!!!

KDOREE - Have you checked for ab toning exercises on the spark videos?

Leslie - You can do it. I know you can reach your goal! I am looking forward to weighing much less by the end of the year as well. And I plan to do it by staying compliant and enjoying life at the same time. I love that this diet works so well for me and my lifestyle.

Chris - Thanks, I did have a great trip. I managed to stay mostly compliant by ordering salmon and broccoli when we had the opportunity to order from a menu for dinner. Some meals were provided however so at those times I just ate as carefully as possible. All things considered I think I did pretty well. Some days were very sedentary as we drove some long distances from place to place but on other days I managed to get in some walking.

I am having another good day, so it is 2 consecutive compliant days since I returned from my trip. It feels great to be eating healthy and mindfully again. Tomorrow I must grocery shop since I haven't done so yet upon returning home on Monday. I am sure to be compliant till Sunday when I know I will partake in our family's Easter traditional foods at a family gathering. I plan to enjoy but not overdo it. For now though I am focusing on staying compliant through Saturday.

Hope everyone is having a good Hump Day!

emoticon Zeelin! Congrats on the weight lost so far! emoticon Looking forward to hearing more from you and getting to know you better.

Wayout - Definitely, you need to stick to full 17 days of C3! Be sure that you are eating your carbs before 2:00, and that will help. And sticking to more natural carbs will help curb any cravings you may be having. I tried not to do any of the "optional" snacks and when I did, they were few and far between. You will certainly see a slow down in C3, and of course TOM will cause some weight fluctuations. But I am sure that you are seeing other benefits from this diet... your clothes are probably getting looser and you probably have more energy too. Remember, while very tempting, it is not healthy to stay on C1. Now if you see a 5 pound gain, then you would want to do C1 or a couple of days to get back on track. After a couple of days you would get right back to C3. Hope that helps!! Keep up the great work, you are doing GREAT!!!

I am still stuck, but better that than gaining any more than I already have. I have still been having some fatigue issues, so haven't been able to work out in the evenings as much as I would like. That extra exercise is usually what helps me lose weight, instead of maintaining. But I am happy that I am at least getting my 20 minute walk in at lunchtime. As the weather warms up, I am certain that I will start feeling better and will be able to get back into the evening routine!

Tammy - have a great trip!

Happy Humpday everyone!!

Great start, Belle and Zeelin! I'm confident your progress will continue as your body learns to love the right things!

I am on a bit of a plateau. C3D3 now, had lost 8.5 in C1, another 4.5 in C2, and now have been up 2 since starting C3. HOWEVER, I have also been moody & retaining water - so I believe this may also be hormonal. I was in a funk the last two days, but this morning I woke up with renewed energy and hit my crossfit workout hard at the gym.
I hit the 178 (which I hadn't seen in about a decade), but am back up to 180. I am determined to push downward into the 160's by summer - but I know it won't happen as fast as the first 10-12 pounds came off.
Someone remind me it is worth it to see Cycle 3 through to the end before restarting C1. I am so tempted to go back to C1 where I was seeing results, but I know that's not the way it works...just need some reinforcement from those who have been there and have had results beyond the first two cycles?

Thanks!

Hi
New to SP and new to the diet. Hi all! I'm on day 8 of C1, lost 8.5lbs the first 7 days. Had a little mishap with some pasta yesterday, but I'm back in the game again today. It's the only place where I have found activity related to the diet.

I had a super busy weekend, and didn't get to a computer at all. Went shopping for baby stuff with my youngest daughter, watched some UK basketball, drove 3 hours one way to visit my father-in-law and worked in my yard! WHEW! It went by way too quickly. I was pretty compliant, except for some cupcakes that we were tasting for my daughter's shower. But other than that, everything went well and the scale didn't budge, which made me happy. Hope everyone is having a great Monday!

That Kentucky - Wisconsin game was a real nail-biter! I knew it would be a great game, but it was definitely not for the faint of heart!

Belle - Sounds to me like you did well. One of the things I love about the 17DD is that it is a program we can live with. We are not always in the perfect circumstance so we make the wisest healthiest choices we can. That's what you did. Good for you. Each time we are in a challenging situation we learn from it. And it strengthens us going forward. You were a healthy wise eater! Woo Hoo! By the way, your chicken fajitas sound delicious (except that I don't like onions emoticon ). Stick with it...you'll love the results! And lest I forget, God bless you for the work you do. I am sure it is quite stressful and difficult.

Wayout - I too find myself hungrier on C2 days when I add in the carbs. Whenever possible I get in the carbs before 2 pm or 4 at the latest (esp. if I am going to be up late I extend it to 4 pm). Then I get to the green tea which is somehow nurturing and has become a comfort food for me.

I am doing fine today. I stocked up on delicious haddock on sale at my grocer. I bake it with some garlic powder and Italian seasoning. I could eat it every day it is so good. It is so satisfying to me. Also, I discovered Dole bag salad chopped salads (on sale of course). Can anyone tell me why they taste so good?? I don't know what is different about a chopped salad, but I love Subway's chopped salads too. Maybe it is that the salad veggies have a more intense flavor because they are chopped.

Hope everyone is having a great Sunday!

Day 4 and I had to make an alteration tonight for supper due to time constraints with work. I work 12 hour days and nights (yes...both) as a dispatcher for a Sheriff's Department. I am on day 4 of a 5 day run. I thought sleep was a little more important today than getting up and baking some fish so I had my husband pick me up chicken fajitas at the local Mexican restaurant. I ate the chicken, peppers, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, lettuce and a little guacamole and whatever oil they used to grill it. It occured to me later that I could have taken some of the grease off with paper towels AFTER I ate. I left out the complimentary chips, rice and beans and flour tortillas.

My intention is to stick with this as much as I possibly can. I have yogurt and berries and a pear for later. Also salad stuff and ground turkey if needed. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Wayoutaline - It should be a really good game! emoticon

I usually use a lot of lean ground turkey. I make the chili that is in the book, no beans for C1 and add beans for C2. It usually makes about 4 or 5 servings depends on how much turkey I use, and I will have one for dinner that night and freeze the rest in individual containers for later. I also like ground turkey patties, and will have those with a cucumber salad or just a green salad. I like putting tzatziki sauce on the turkey patties as they can sometimes be a little on the dry side. Here is a recipe that is posted on the Recipes Message Board that was submitted by Lorijbug.

TZATZIKI SAUCE

One cup non-fat plain Greek Yogurt
One cup cucumber (peeled, deseeded and grated) drain and press in strainer
Dill weed to taste (I like a lot)
Garlic to taste
Salt and Pepper to taste
Pinch of truvia to decrease sourness (you can not taste the sweet)

Makes two cups - very low calorie depending on your choice of yogurt

Hope that this helps. There are a lot of great recipes on our team message board. Here's the link.

Chris- I'm sorry to say we will be cheering on opposite sides of the TV this weekend. I am a Badger- Go Bucky! Also somewhat surprised to see my boys in the Final Four, but delighted!

I am C2D15, and find that I am hungrier on my alternate days where I get the two carb servings (steel cut oats and sweet potato for me). I know I need to find foods that are higher in calories, but still low in carb and fat.

Any suggestions of favorites (besides chicken, fish and eggs)? Tammy - having a big pot of homemade soup sounds like one great idea. Any others?

Where I have been slipping is on the weekends. I am making a mini-goal to stay compliant (including no alcohol) for the entire weekend.

I am off to a good start today as well but I feel very very tired as if an RA flare is coming. Horrible timing too as I leave on Wednesday for a trip involving one of the charities I volunteer with. I return on April 14. Much to do right now so I can't really get in the rest I need. Good thing I have haddock on hand as it is quick and easy to prepare and very satisfying for me. I also have a big pot of veggie soup so I really don't have to worry about cooking for a couple days.

Chris - I love my water and still enjoy a good cup coffee. I like the green tea, especially the flavored ones like citrus, pomegranate, etc. I don't drink diet soda like I used to, but I have to admit I still like it a lot. I had a diet pepsi not too long ago, and it tasted as good as ever to me. I think what I really like is the carbonation so I drink seltzer water quite a bit. There's something about that fizz!

Kristin - Hang in there with the water. It really does make a difference in terms of boosting weight loss and is just good for us overall.

Let's make this a great weekend!

Today started off much better than yesterday. The scale has already moved back in the right direction (mostly water, I know, but I'll take it!!) Had my morning smoothie, having turkey taco salad for lunch (ended up having egg beaters last night instead) and either grilled salmon or chicken salad for dinner. I already feel so much better, both physically and mentally after just one day of C1 and exercise.

Hello Kristin! Glad to see you found this board. I had a hard time getting in all that water at first too, but now, it's second nature. About all I drink now is my green tea and water with lemon or lime added. I will occasionally order an unsweet tea if we go out, but usually it's water for me. I accidentally took a drink of my husband's diet coke the other day and almost gagged! I can remember a time not that long ago, when I couldn't live without it! YUCK! All those chemicals.

Have a great weekend everyone! And GO CATS!!! I am a huge basketball fan, and am so excited (and to be honest, very surprised) that Kentucky has made it to the Final Four!

Having a pretty good day so far, after the bad start to the morning. I walked/exercised at lunch for 30 minutes, and have been C1 compliant all day. Planning on having a turkey taco salad for dinner tonight, with my 2nd helping of yogurt a little later as a sweet treat. Hope everyone is having a great day!

Stepped on the scale this morning (haven't been checking daily for several days now) and WOW what a wake up call for me today! I am going to do a few days of C1 to get back on track and then back to C2. Forgiving myself and moving on! Better to get a jump on this before it gets completely out of control. No excuses!

Wayout and Chris - Thanks for the much-needed words of encouragement. I did well today and am pumped for another good day tomorrow.

Kathy - Glad you can relax and have some time off. That's the best!

I worked hard today with things around the house, and I love the sense of accomplishment I get as a result. I moved much more today than usual and feel tired now, but it is a good tired. Much more to do tomorrow, so time for bed now.

Keep up the good work team!

Kathy - so glad to hear the news about the tsunami advisory being lifted for you. Enjoy your mini vacation!

Chaser - emoticon That is a tremendous accomplishment! Exercising daily is something I have been struggling with all winter, due to health issues. I am hoping that those are now past me and I can get back on track. You are an inspiration to all of us! Wonderful news about your granddaughters! Hoping that the rest of your week is outstanding!

Tammy - emoticon It can be very hard to get back on track after a few "off" days! Keep up the great work. I am so glad that April is here and it seems that the weather is just getting better and better every day! I am definitely a fair weather walker, so I am glad that spring is FINALLY here!

Wayoutaline - emoticon

I am going to make it a goal to post daily through April. I am hoping that will give me the boost I need, so that I can get back to my goal weight. I always feel more accountable when I post daily here!

Have a great afternoon everyone!

Good morning, everyone!! (Well - it's a good morning for me......I think you are probably half way thru your afternoon!).

We are just now cancelling our tsunami advisory - no threat here......my prayers go to the people of Chile and Peru.......

I have two days off in a row this week!! For me, that's like a mini vacation......whheeeeee!!

Still struggling with mobility - which is having an impact on weight control.....but somehow I will make it thru - that's a promise.

For now - gotta run (figuratively speaking)!!

Wow, Chaser- 30 days straight of exercise - awesome job! I'm sure you will keep rolling now that it is your routine.

Tammy- encouragement to you as you push forward. Congrats on hopping back on track today and continuing your success.

I am feeling a bit of disappointment today as I had an artificially low scale reading on Sunday morning (due to some temporary dehydration I think), which has now corrected itself so I feel like I went backwards. But tracking my fluctuations in weight has helped me realize how consistently inconsistent the gradual trend downward is... two steps down, one back up, and so on. And thanks to you all for reminding me it's more than just what the numbers on the scale say - good or bad.

So we all keep progressing ahead. We can do this!

Chaser - Fabulous!!! Congrats on such wonderful results and on meeting your exercise challenge. Way to go! So happy to hear that both of your precious granddaughters are doing well. So much to be thankful for!

I am doing ok today after a few days of struggling. I know how well this diet works and am totally back on track today after several pretty major slip-ups that I blame on stress but that is not really a good excuse.

Have a happy April!

This last week was amazing! I finished cycle 2 of 17 day diet and I have lost 7 lbs. 16 more to go. Now on to cycle 3. I met my challenge to exercise everyday for 30 days, now my challenge is to go for another 30. I have a new granddaughter who was 3 weeks early and doing great and my 3 yr old granddaughter had surgery today and the results were better than expected and she got to come home today instead of having to stay in the hospital. I hope everyone has a great week.

Wayoutaline - Woo hoo and congrats. You are doing great. I am right with you loving not having the cravings for sweets. To me, besides the impressive weight losses and healthy eating in general, what I love most about this diet is not having what I call "hunger monster" cravings. I love not feeling tempted and feeling in control Keep on going girl Very happy for you!

Chris - I have faith that you will meet your four pound goal in time for your grandbaby's arrival. Glad you are feeling better.

I am still doing ok. Still somewhat plateaued but am expecting a break in this soon. I have been compliant and feel good, so for now I am being patient with the scale.

emoticon Wayoutaline! That is terrific news! And way to go on moving forward even after a few slip ups. Learning to forgive yourself is HUGE!

Hope everyone is having a great day. I am still "stuck" on the same weight, but I have been feeling much better. I've been able to exercise daily now and am trying to increase it a little every day. My goal is to get back to my original goal weight by the time my first granddaughter is born in May. Just 4 more pounds to go till that goal, so if I really set my mind to it, I CAN do it!!!

Thanks for all the well wishes while I was under the weather. This group really is amazing.

I hit the 10 lbs mark! On C2D7 and I have lost 10 pounds so far.

Have had a few slip-ups along the way, but kept moving forward instead of guilt-tripping out on myself.
Feel great, and clothes getting loose. Still no cravings for junk - and I was an addict!
Thank you to this group for support - whether through comments or just your past posts that I read for inspiration. I am so happy to have found a way of eating that makes sense for me.

I know I still have a long way to go, but I cannot think of another time in my life when I have intentionally lost 10 pounds. Happy dance! emoticon

Welcome Pinktwinklelove! Check in with us here to let us know how you are doing and so we can all cheer each other on!

Wayout - I did well at the cake tasting but felt very bloated afterwards. I drank extra water trying to flush out all that sugar. But the cake tasting was a lot of fun and by going and ordering the cakes on Sunday we saved about $35. I did ok today with a few minor "cheats," which given my past patterns, means I will be 100% compliant tomorrow. I will make a big pot of compliant veggie soup as that is a staple for me.

Chaserlevi - Congrats on losing and on getting in all that exercise. Woo hoo and keep up the good work.

Struck67 - Yay for you too! You are doing great too. Keep up the good work and please continue to check in with us. This is a great place to care and share!

Here's to a great week for all of us!

Started Cycle 2 at the end of last week, but made unwise beverage choices both Friday and Saturday night (have not had alcohol in a while, and ended up having drinks both nights). This threw me completely off track, and even though my eating was on track, the calories and carbs from the drinks wreaked havoc. So, the advice that alcohol is not part of a solid weight loss plan has been tested and proven 100% correct - in case anyone else was wondering!
That said, even though I am back up 2.5 of the 8.5 pounds I lost in Cycle 1, I am putting that behind me and moving forward starting yesterday. Again, I know the scale only shows the short term fluctuations but I have been doing wonderful things for my body and they that work is not wasted in the long run.
Back on track!
Chris- hope you are still feeling good and that is sustaining!
Tammy- interested to know how the cake testing went, and how you bounced back afterward.

Have a great week, everyone!

Chris - My fingers are crossed for you too. I hope you continue to stay well. I found out that a 70-something year old woman from my church has Sjogrens's, but that is all she has, no other auto-immune disorders (though she has had a few other unrelated medical issues). She told me that when Sjogren's is "primary" it is not as bad as when it occurs with other auto-immune issues. I found that interesting. Just thought I'd share.

I have been stalled at the same weight for quite some time now. I just returned to C1 so I expect a drop this time. C3 has always been a sort of trial maintenance for me LOL. I do have a pretty big challenge tomorrow though which will take me completely out of compliance. I have to go to a cake tasting open house for one of the organizations I am involved with. I am working on an event which will require several cakes from this rather upscale bakery. One other person is going with me (and this person knows I am dieting) but ultimately the cake ordering decision is up to me. I invited 2 other people to join us but they are busy. So, I will have to suffer emoticon with the cake tasting tomorrow. I am telling myself that I will taste the various cakes, make my decision, and then get right back to C1. How's that for a plan??

Hope everyone is having a healthy happy Saturday. I'll let you know how I do tomorrow!

I finally seem to be getting better. I had to call the doctor back last week, when I said I was feeling worse again. He put me on another round of antibiotics, and I am keeping my fingers crossed that this does the trick. Today was my last dose, and while I do feel much better, I still have some swelling and soreness under my jaw. I tell you, I thought a sinus infection was bad news, but this salivary gland infection has been the absolute worst!

Wayoutaline - I agree with Tammy! Even though you may have a bad day or two throughout your cycle, you should always stick to the 17 day schedule. It's not good for your body to be on Cycle 1 for too long. I always look forward to oatmeal on the first day of cycle 2. And remember that the scale is not the only measure of progress. Our weight can fluctuate from so many different things. There was a great article this week in the weekly Spark email about the scale. www.sparkpeople.com/blog/blog.asp?post=55_
things_the_scale_wont_tell_you
emoticon

Kathymag - Glad to hear that you are liking your Fitbit. I have had one for over a year now and never go a day without it. It's really been enlightening, especially about my sleeping patterns. I agree with the fact that it proves what I already suspected, although, it was kind of shocking to see how many times I am restless at night.

Chaserlevi - While the scale may not show it, you're well on your way. Like I said earlier in this post, the scale is not the only way to measure your progress, so be sure and pat yourself on the back for your accomplishments! Your exercise streak is outstanding! emoticon

Val - we also had another round of bad weather. We had beautiful weather on Saturday for my daughter's baby shower. I went without a jacket all day. Then it was back to sleet, snow and cold on Sunday and Monday! Spring is coming, I can feel it, but it sure is being a tease this year!

Happy Humpday everyone! emoticon

Tammy-
Thank you so much for the clarification and advice.
I will be happy to take your advice and move on to C2 as scheduled. Now that I look at it, that would be Thursday anyway. Excited about having a bowl of old fashioned oatmeal with a dab of natural peanut butter at breakfast. And happy I can periodically enjoy my serving of nuts guilt-free!
We'll see where the scale ends up on Thursday after this TOM weight figures itself out.
I do feel much less bloated and irritable than I normally would have, so that's a good thing!

Thanks again!

Wayout - I know it is very tempting to want to extend your C1 but really it is not recommended, particularly in your first few rounds of this diet. I suggest moving right to C2 when you are supposed to (remember on C2 you alternate between C1 and C2 days anyway so you will be having 1/2 of your days as C1 days anyway). And now nuts are allowed on all cycles .You count your nuts as a friendly fat. You are allowed 14 g of fat for each friendly fat serving. It is important to eat raw or dry roasted nuts with no added oil. Also, 1 tablespoon of peanut butter (peanuts only....with nothing added...not sugar or anything else), and this also counts as I friendly fat. When I started the 17DD I was on it only a week before I traveled out of state to a family wedding. I did my best to be compliant and was not perfect, but I kept up with the cycles are prescribed in the book, and yes, I still lost weight on both C1 and C2.

Kathymag - Enjoy your day off! Here's to a great kick off to your restart of C1!

I am doing fine today. I have been compliant so far and intend to have another day of total compliance. It feels good. Made a big pot of compliant veggie soup yesterday and loving it. Counting down to spring....Thursday's the day! Yay spring! emoticon

Day off! !!! Wheeeeee!!! Haven't decided what I'm going to do with it yet, but I understand the surf is high on all shores, so i think a photo shoot is in my near future!

Restarting C1.... yesterday was D1....... with my decreased activity tolerance, have to figure out another way to get things back under control.

The Fitbit is really helping that effort.

Our day hasn't really started yet. ..... how yours is going well so far! !

Went slightly off plan over the weekend, which didn't help weight loss efforts. But maybe more importantly, I learned it is possible to have an item or two off the plan without considering it a failure and throwing the whole thing out the window.
I have been eating cheese and nuts, which are not part of C1, and while I still had really good initial results, I think it is slowing me down now and I need to avoid those for a bit and focus more on the lean proteins and veggies.
That said, I'm feeling a bit reassured that the two pounds gained back since Thursday may also have a bit to do with PMS water retention.
I guess we'll see at the end of this week. I started Cycle 1 (more or less) on 3/3, but am going to continue on a few days longer until Friday.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! emoticon
Another chilly day here and cloudy...BAH! But it's still only March.
Tammy, we stayed at the party an hour. I had some fruit and a bite of shortbread, cheese and some kind of summer sausage. People were drinking and we don't drink so hubby decided an hour was long enough lol!
Not doing too bad eating wise. 17DD and low carb can be challenging at times. I need to stay with what works for me but some days I am rebellious. emoticon
I had to stop a few and look at where I was in January. My beginning weight was on Jan 18th this year so I think I am doing well with what I have lost so far.

Hi, gang....

Yup - I've been quiet....sorry about that! My biggest news is that I am now the proud owner of a Fitbit!! Love that thing!! It's much more accurate than my pedometer.....and even tracks how I'm sleeping - imagine that! (No surprise in the results, but it's nice to see that I'm not the only one thinking I'm not getting enuf good rest!).

The pain goes on for me, but at this point, I'm just plain ol' dealing with it. Things will get better as soon as I can get back into PT. A few sessions there, and I'll be able to ride again - just in time for spring.

Walking is difficult, but I[m doing it thru the pain, averaging anywhere from 4-6 miles a day depending on how busy things are at work.

Today on the islands, we have a lot of very high winds.....and it's a little cool by our standards.....but it's still Hawaii!! :-)

For now - time for me to hit the sack - I have another early day tomorrow.....

Aloha po - Hugs all around -

Kathymag

Chris - Hope you are continuing to do well on C1 (my favorite cycle). I bet you are right that your surgery had something to do with your flare. Makes sense to me.

Wayoutaline - I am a fan of Casting Crowns and listen to them on Pandora. Great song!

Val - How did the party go? Hope you enjoyed yourself. Happy to see that you are feeling better.

I have been slacking off on exercise and need to step it up again. Doing my best on C3 but looking forward to C1 where the greater structure seems to increase my compliance.

Here's to a great weekend for everyone!

One of my favorite songs by them!
Today was first I felt better since the flu. Been eating like crazy though and things I need to avoid. Like crackers! Tomorrow I start back on track. Should be interesting as we are invited to a party by one of DH's former coworkers. She quit the plant too and is celebrating a new job and St. Patrick Day. emoticon we won't stay late.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone! I thought I'd share a song that has been of great empowerment to me... I think of my food addiction as the 'giant' in this song, and feel like I am finally picking up that stone and slingshot!
Hopefully it is empowering for others as well...

"Voice Of Truth" - Casting Crowns

Oh what I would do to have
The kind of faith it takes to climb out of this boat I'm in
Onto the crashing waves

To step out of my comfort zone
To the realm of the unknown where Jesus is
And He's holding out his hand

But the waves are calling out my name and they laugh at me
Reminding me of all the times I've tried before and failed
The waves they keep on telling me
Time and time again. 'Boy, you'll never win!'
"You'll never win"

But the voice of truth tells me a different story
And the voice of truth says "Do not be afraid!"
And the voice of truth says "This is for My glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

Oh what I would do to have
The kind of strength it takes to stand before a giant
With just a Sling and a stone
Surrounded by the sound of a thousand warriors
Shaking in their armor
Wishing they'd have had the strength to stand

But the giant's calling out my name and he laughs at me
Reminding me of all the times I've tried before and failed
The giant keeps on telling me
Time and time again "boy, you'll never win!
"You'll never win"

But the stone was just the right size
To put the giant on the ground
And the waves they don't seem so high
From on top of them looking down
I will soar with the wings of eagles
When I stop and listen to the sound of Jesus
Singing over me

I will choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

Thanks everyone for the well wishes.Today was the first day I ate breakfast since Saturday. My temp is back to normal but still taking it easy on activity and foods. I have a roast in the crockpot for DH. I may nibble at a little bit but not really interested.
Yesterday was so nice and today we have rain, wind and snow. In a couple days it will be warm again though! Hoping to feel up to a good walk outdoors by then!

C1D3 - Hanging in there!

emoticon Wayoutaline! Way to flex those resistance muscles. You are well on your way to getting to your goal, and your new way of life. Thanks for your encouragement! I have struggled for so many years with my weight, and I refuse to go back to an unhealthy lifestyle!

Tammy - my meds were working well too, so this really took me by surprise. I think that my surgery was the trigger to this latest relapse, my body just can't handle any kind of major stress. I'm just thankful that I only had to be on the prednisone for 15 days, and my joint pain didn't return once I stopped taking it. That is what happened the last time I had a major flare-up and I was on prednisone for over a year. Now I just have to get over this infection... which seems to be getting worse again. UGH! You'll have to let us know how you like your activity tracker. I have had a Fitbit One since last January, and I love it. It helps keep me motivated to get a few extra steps in every day.

Val - I hope that you are feeling better!

Wayoutaline - You rock! Great job at the hockey party. Feels great to flex those resistance muscles, doesn't it? Woo hoo for you.

Chris - I feel for you with all you have going on. I too have tested positive for both lupus and RA but not for Sjogren's Syndrome. As we know, there is so much overlap with RA and lupus, I am just grateful that my meds are currently working so well. Last time I had a heart checks (nuclear stress test...about 3 years ago and an EKG last year around this time), they came back fine. My mother had lupus and heart problems at an age younger than I am now, so I know I have to be cautious and proactive....just another reason for me to get rid of this weight. We are all here cheering you on as you say goodbye to those 10 pounds!

Val - Hope you are feeling better. Take care and rest up!

Chaserlevi - Wow...great going. Impressive exercise streak as well. Keep it up! You motivate me to move more.

I had a bad day yesterday....totally off track, and I feel it today. It is good though because it reminds me of how good I feel when I am compliant. I just got the spark activity tracker. Yesterday was my first full day wearing it. I didn't make the time to exercise, so I am using yesterday as a baseline and will plan to increase my steps each successive day. I seem to keep playing with the same few pounds up and down...but I know that I'll get past this... I always do.

Get well soon, Val!
Dogwalker, so impressed by your self-awareness to hop back into it when you identify you are at your upper limit of comfort. All the more encouraging for those of us just starting out!

Had another small victory today. My son's end of season hockey party was at a pizza place, and there were buffet tables full of food that I just don't need to be eating. I went and purchased my own salad and crunched away triumphantly. Ten days in so far... I'm really doing this!

C1D2 - with all the surgery, illness, autoimmune, etc., I haven't been very compliant lately... especially on the weekends. But I am committing myself to getting back on track. I am at the highest weight I have been since I hit my goal weight last October. While it is less than 10 pounds over my goal, it's time to do some damage control! I know that some of this weight is fluid and inflammation, and I think that getting back on C1 will definitely help those issues as well. Gonna emoticon

Awesome job everyone!
Well...turns out it wasn't the roll causing my trouble. I started running a fever yesterday and today as well. Only thing that sounded good today was crackers and tea. So not a compliant two days. The scales show a loss but we all know that is water. I'll skip weigh ing in for a week. Now off to take my Tylenol and drink more water.

So excited after 15 days on the 17 day diet I have lost 5.8 pounds. I have also exercised 9 days in a row to my challenge to myself to exercise everyday for the month of March. I have also gotten dh to exercise with me. Doing great.

After 7 days, Sunday's weigh in showed total loss of about 5 pounds. Not bad, considering weekends. We went out to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings Friday night. I stuck to a salad with grilled chicken, but still felt like it was a bit much compared to how well I had been eating (didn't leave feeling hungry like I used to think I would when I'd order nachos instead). I learned that weekends are most difficult, as we are on the go most of the time and so much of what we do used to involve 'grabbing a bite' here or there. I think I kept with the eating plan as far as what foods to eat, but the quantities on the proteins/fats were a bit higher. I restocked the produce and will be washing and cutting it up this morning. That really helped last week.
Here we go week two!

Ah the aches and pains. Sorry to hear you are not feeling well. A few years ago they tested me for RA. I had a marker but evidently no real symptoms. I do have fibromyalgia and diabetes and some osteoarthritis. When I started 17DD I noticed on C1 my aches were reduced or gone. It wasn't until a few months ago I started to avoid wheat and other grains. When I do this I have noticed I feel so much better....except when I get stubborn and eat a pretzel roll like yesterday. I was sick later and have bloat and pain yet this morning. Told my DH to remind me of this next time I say I want one. Sticking to the other starchy foods as my starches from now on.

Tammy - glad to be back. I have been having a really rough time the past couple of weeks. emoticon

My autoimmune flare turned into a raging salivary gland infection. I don't know if I ever said, but I have Sjogren's Syndrome, which attacks your salivary glands and tear ducts. I also tested positive for RA and Lupus, but it's so hard to diagnose these autoimmune diseases. There are so many overlapping symptoms. My rheumatologist thinks that I have primary Sjogren's. but who knows. Anyway, I never knew this, but Sjogren's can cause stones to form in your salivary glands, which can cause a blockage, which in turn can cause an infection. Sounds like fun, huh? After a major dose of antibiotics, I am finally feeling better. Bad news is, I will be prone to these from now on. And I have yet another specialist to add to my collection!

To answer your question about the fluid retention, I think mine is a combo of my high blood pressure, and my autoimmune issues. I'm on 3 different BP meds, but I think my heart issues stem from my autoimmune problems (so does my cardiologist). I especially notice an increase if I have eaten out, because restaurants put so much salt in everything. I think some of my weight fluctuation might also be inflammation, because there will be times when my joints feel tight and swollen, and I'll see the scale move then too. I also think hormonal changes are a culprit (menopause, TOM, etc). I really try to watch my sodium intake, and basically just live with the small increases, because after a couple of days, they usually go away. If it goes up more than 5 pounds in a couple of days, which is what happened when my doctor tried to change my BP meds a few months ago, then I have to take an extra diuretic for a couple of days to get things back to normal. This hasn't happened that often, but is one of the reasons that I try to weigh myself daily. I don't know if that answered you questions. And hopefully I haven't bored everyone to tears!

Have a great weekend! emoticon

Chris - So glad to see your post. emoticon I have missed your posts and hope you are feeling ok. May I ask, is your fluid retention related to your RA? I have been on a diuretic due to high blood pressure for about 2 years, and I also take a bp medication. My bp is controlled this way. But sometimes when I weigh it and see a gain I suspect water weight, even though I don't see any other indications of it (like swollen ankles, etc.). Just wondering if this is something I should discuss with my rheumatologist. (Of course I fully expect that as I lose more weight I might be able to go off the bp meds. I also take the generic form of Plaquenil for my RA, and thank God, that has been working miracles for me lately...or maybe it is just a natural remission, not sure..) By the way, I totally agree with you in wishing that daylight saving time would be abolished. I do like it being lighter longer into the evening, but the up-coming dark mornings are not worth the trade off in my mind.

Wayoutaline - Great going with your work breakfast at Panera's, and thanks for the tip on a good choice when going there. There is a Panera's not far from our home, but I haven't been there in ages. Next time I have the opportunity, I will know what to order. I smiled when I read your post saying, "not sure what changed in my head," because that is exactly what happened to me when I started on this diet as well. It is an amazing feeling that has remained with me for the most part. Perhaps it is our bodies' way of saying thank you for finally fueling it with healthy food that is good and nutritious. You have every reason to be optimistic because this is a diet that works. emoticon

I have had a string of consecutive good days this week. I love feeling this energy. A friend of mine has lost almost 100 pounds but hit a long plateau. She was familiar with the 17DD but had not followed it for most of her weight loss as she opted for another plan and did quite well. However, she has been on the 17DD for just a few days now and already reports her plateau is broken and she is feeling great. emoticon Just had to share that!

Here's to another great day and a successful weekend! emoticon emoticon

Welcome Wayoutaline and Michele! Way to go on your successes! It's amazing how your body no longer craves the sugar and carbs after just a few days of eating healthier! Once you get past those first few days, it definitely gets easier. Sara, a former co-leader of this team, was always fond of saying that the more you work your resistance muscles, the stronger they become. That is SO true! I can't tell you how many donuts and other goodies I have passed up since being on this plan, that I would have been the first in line for before! And planning ahead is also key, especially if you are eating out. I always try to find restaurant menus online to see what my options are before I get there.

As far as sleep goes, Dr. Mike even mentions that getting enough sleep is key to losing weight. Not always an easy thing to do, that is for certain! And with daylight savings time coming up, it's going to be even harder for me. I so wish that they would just do away with it. It really messes up my sleep patterns, and having an autoimmune illness makes getting a good night's sleep even more important!

As far as Mr. Scale goes, remember that there are many other ways to measure your success than by actual weight. Michele mentioned her belly being smaller... soon your clothes will start feeling loose, you'll have more energy and feel healthier than ever. I am one of those who weighs myself daily, because I have health issues and I have to watch fluid retention. My daughter, on the other hand, would only weigh herself at the end of each 17 days, and that worked for her. You just have to do what works best for you.

I'm new to this board also. Cycle 1, Day 5.
Two notable successes in last 24 hours (that in the past would have derailed me...)

Yesterday, my boss took me and a coworker out for breakfast at Panera. Although all the pastry looked amazing, I had done my research in advance and ordered the breakfast power bowl (egg white, veggies, & turkey in a bowl). It was actually very delish and satisfying!
This morning, I baked cookies for the kiddos and was not even interested in them.
Not sure what has changed in my head over the past 5 days, but I am very optimistic!

Michele- today I am sleep deprived also, so am a bit worried about that - listening to great music to keep me happy instead of comfort food.

We can do this!

Michele - Congrats on another loss!! emoticon Today is to be my day to be a little tired it seems. emoticon A wrong number woke me up an hour before I needed to be up. Ugh! I love my sleep, and I honestly believe getting enough sleep helps me to lose weight. I have a love/hate relationship with Mr. Scale (as Lori, a 17DD team member, calls the scale). Like you, sometimes I weigh too often. Then I get disappointed if the number doesn't match my expectation. Then sometimes, especially when I have not been compliant, I stay away from Mr. Scale because I don't want to see a disappointing number and get discouraged. So now, I weigh in twice a week usually. It is sort of my compromise with myself. emoticon
Woo Hoo for you on passing up the donuts. Great reasoning that the 8 lb loss is better than that donut! emoticon
Let's have another great day! emoticon emoticon

Thanks Tammy! I'm a little tired today, but just because the cats woke me up early this morning. They are worse than the kids :) I think I weight myself too often, and get a little discouraged when the number isn't lower each time. I'm trying to weigh in just once a week, but sometimes the suspense is just too much :) I lost another 2 lbs or so, and am now up to a total of 8 lbs lost since last Sunday, which is awesome. Way more than I expected when I first started. And the smaller belly is amazing! I stopped and got the kids donuts today from Dunkin Donuts and wasn't even tempted. Not that they didn't smell great. I just like my 8 lb weight loss more than I liked that donut :)

Michele - Woo hoo for your great start and loss! Isn't it amazing how you can already notice less "belly" and how good that makes your feel? You're right that the rate of loss might slow a bit. But you will still lose and continue to feel great. Keep up the good work and hope to see more posts. We are all here to support each other.

I'm on day 10, and have lost 6 pounds so far! I can't wait to get to day 17 to see how much progress I'll have made by then. What's really making me happy though is that my belly has gotten noticeably smaller. The weight loss is slowing down, but I expected that. I'm hoping for another few before I'm finished with this first cycle.

Welcome Chaserlevi - Congratulations on your loss! So happy to have you join in with this wonderfully supportive group. I am a 56 year old retired mom (no grandkids yet, and none expected for quite a while). Great idea challenging yourself to the 30 days of exercise. I know you can do it. Talking on line gets easier every time you do it. So keep it up! It is a great way to share with others in our ups and downs and to find the support and friendship that is beneficial to reaching our goals. When you set up your spark page, I will be happy to add you as a friend! Best wishes, and, again, welcome!

Hi, I am new to talking on line. I started the 17 day diet last Monday and lost 3 lbs. I am a 63 year old retired mother and grandmother. I have 20 lbs to lose and hope everyone can keep me motivated. I have also challenged myself to exercise everyday for 30 days.

Val - Hope you get to the bottom of your stomach aches. It is such a shame that so many meds help one thing but cause another issue.

Chris - So sorry to hear about your flare. Have you noticed if the time of year has an impact on your flares? Ever since I was initially diagnosed, spring has always been the worst for me, though when I first became aware of my symptoms it was summertime.

Cyndi - Hope things are going well for you!

I had a good day today. It was a rare day as I was able to be home all day, with no outside commitments. I got a lot done around the house and stayed compliant as well. Can't ask for much more than that.

Have a great Thursday!

Have had some lower stomach aches , more than usual lately. Thought grain free would help but not really. I will still keep my starches to the non grain catagory most days but I think my problem is my Metformin. So it was suggested I spread my doses out by cutting my pills in half and taking 4x a day instead of whole tablet 2x. Only been two days but I can already tell a difference. If it doesn't help then Doc and I will have to look into it further. Maybe taking extended release form of it which is more expensive. If I can just get the weight off it would help even more.

I am FINALLY starting to feel better. I had an absolutely horrible weekend, and had to call my rheumatologist on Monday because the pain had gotten unbearable. So of course, I am now back on prednisone, which is something I hoped would never happen. It took me so long to get weaned off it, and I was so happy when I finally did. Unfortunately, it looks like I will probably be on this, off and on for the rest of my days. But the good news is, that while the side effects of the prednisone can be devastating, the relief it gives is unbelievable. Within 3 hours my pain was subsiding, and after 2 days, it is almost completely gone. So, I may finally be able to get back into my exercise routine soon. That is the one thing that I have truly missed over these past few months.

Hope everyone has a great Wednesday!

Simpson - Yay for you for getting through the rough spots. It is so worth it once you do. One of the things that helped me a great deal, and still does, is checking in here on this thread as much as I can. So hope to see your posts as we all can learn so much and gain so much support from each other...while we lose those pounds!

Val - It sure is a balancing act between wanting to be online, sharing, and learning and knowing too that we need to be up and moving. I am the same way. When I am online I make a point to get up and stretch and walk around even if it is just for a few minutes. It is just too darn easy to be sedentary.

Well I hope everyone is enjoying a beautiful Sunday. I did ok at a luncheon at church.. not perfect but pretty healthy. Soon I am driving 90 minutes or so with my DS and some friends to pay our respects to a friend's mother who passed away mid week. I am fairly sure we will stop somewhere for dinner on the way back. I plan to make wise choices.

I have been away from here for a while. I was not doing very well. However, I have finally turned that around and been able to start cycle one and get to day 7.

C1D7 yeah!

I feel that now that I have made it over this hurdle that the rest will come easy. I had headaches and cravings the first few days but those have subsided and I am ready to continue to the end!

Chris---I am here! Like you I been lurking even if I don't always post. I don't stay long when I do check Sparkpeople because I have been trying to cut back on my online time.
I did get out a bit this week in the rain. I am not complaining!! Unfortunately they are calling for temps in the 20's again next week. emoticon I enjoy it while it's here!

I also wondered where everyone is---I look and see 2,013 members or something like that and I wonder where they are! LOL! Maybe it's the lull before the rush to fit into a bathing suit.

Sorry that I have been MIA for a bit. I am really struggling with an autoimmune flare right now. I've been having a lot of joint pain and extreme fatigue. I have tried to walk a few times a week, but I've have been so tired that I haven't even really been able to do much of that. I have been maintaining for the most part, up and down the same two pounds, but still having trouble getting back down to my goal weight, because I haven't been able to exercise much. It has been very frustrating. I've really been feeling like this ever since my surgery. We have even had some warmer weather (71 yesterday before the storm front came through) and I haven't been able to enjoy it, because all I want to do when I get home is sit in my chair and rest. I go back to the rheumatologist next week for a follow up appointment, so if I am still suffering next week, I am hoping that he will have some answers for me.

I've been "lurking" even though I haven't been posting, and I miss seeing all the posts... where is everyone? I hope that everyone is doing ok. I know it has been a crazy winter, and I worry about all of my friends out there who are up north getting the brunt of it! Spring will be here soon... February is ALMOST over! And I can't wait!

Above freezing temps and sunshine here today. Feels almost like spring (OK, I am exaggerating).

I am doing fine on C2. Some challenges tomorrow...lunch at a group event where I will just have to eat whatever is served. (I'm betting it will be sandwiches, not my choice but I will deal with it.) And tomorrow evening some friends are coming over and want pizza. Still working on getting through that one. I don't want to blow off the entire day tomorrow because doing so always sets me back a lot. I am planning to serve a veggie tray before the pizza, but I don't see myself not having at least one piece of pizza with my guests.

Hope everyone is doing ok and gearing up for a good weekend.

I am following C3 but I have been through all cycles a couple times in order and staying on 3 is an option given. If we get to jumping around too much then we are not being compliant and giving new members the wrong idea. Because of some health issue we may have to make some personal changes, example, I have had to cut out most grains but I still eat the other natural starches. But the book does not say my starches MUST be grains.

Very nice weather today. Started the day with an inch of snow and ice under it. By noon its melting. We got to 47 today and 49 tomorrow and Wednesday, then colder tempts and snow. Have to remember that it's still winter and we don't want Spring to come too early. There was the year the trees were leafing out on St. Patrick's Day. Was not good in the end! So, Winter while it's Winter. Just not the below zero stuff!

Doing better with my diet. Working to stay with an overall mentality of sticking to eating the good foods on the plan and not worrying too much about cycle. Overall keeping my carbs to a moderate amount as the plan encourages and eating them early in the day. I feel so good eating the food on the plan. I worked out tonight and had a great run. I'm doing well there and excited about possibly getting some outdoor walking in before the weather returns us to Winter.

Listening to the it rain/sleet, etc. UGH! Just a couple more days and we will be warming up they say! Can't wait!
Been mostly grain free a couple weeks now and feeling pretty good until today. After going back through my weekend I am sure I had more sodium than what I have been used to lately. Also had a headache and a swollen left knee. Ahhh well.

I used to read that magazine all the time but haven't bought one lately. Thanks Cindi, I think I will look for it next time I am shopping.

I did really well at the dinner party yesterday only to struggle all day today. I am also in a grumpy mood today because more snow is headed this way tomorrow again. I can take it when I am able to stay home and not worry about driving in it. I have never suffered from cabin fever. But when I must go out and drive when the weather is bad, that's another story. It looks like I will not be able to stay home tomorrow, unless something changes at the last minute.

I did not see it. I think sometimes you can find their articles online so I will look for it.
Doing ok so far today. They finally plowed our street after DH was on T.V. Saturday night lol! Sad that it had to take that to get them out here.
Talked to my sis in law Saturday too. I could tell she is manic right now because she was very obsessed with my diet. I just changed the subject. It's sad when she gets like this, not the person I knew years ago.
Everyone have a great day!

Full day today. I had to get something at the drive thru since I had back to back events. Didn't get me too far off since I picked a grilled chicken snack wrap.

Did anyone see the new First for Women. They have Dr. Oz on the cover. I bought it to read the article about healthy bacteria. Interesting. He is talking about the importance of probiotics and prebiotics and staying away from sugar and simple carbs for health. Finally someone explains what prebiotics are and how they figure into everything. Basically they are what healthy stomach bacteria needs to be feeding off of. Bananas, resistant starch foods, potatoes, apples, pears, whole grains, onions, garlic, and other foods. A reason not to stay in cycle 1, but to move on to the other cycles. We need a variety of foods to foster good stomach health.

Hoping that everyone is well and coping with whatever weather you have in your area. We got 19 inches of snow Wednesday into Thursday, that is on top of all the other snow on the ground from the many other snowfalls. Today we are expecting around 3 or 4 more inches. Thank heavens we did not lose power this time.

Kathy - I hope you and your family continue on the road to complete good health. I am guessing you got those additional 6 to 8 inches as predicted. Glad your taste buds are back.

Val - I ventured out on our streets yesterday to go grocery shopping (and do my extra walking with the grocery cart). I was amazed at how bad our streets were. I saw a van stuck on a side street very close to a main road. I am immune from cabin fever however. Never in my 56 years have I had it. So staying in is just fine with me.

Cindi - Good luck with your plan. It makes sense to me. You just can't beat the healthy way of life that this diet brings us.

I am thrilled to report that I have officially lost ALL of my holiday weight!! So now anything I lose from here forward is real progress in my book. I am having a group of friends here for dinner tomorrow, about 10 people total. Entertaining this group is always a challenge due to some rather fussy personalities. I have to admit, I am not serving a 17DD compliant menu to this group as it would never fly. So I took the easy way out and bought some Stromboli from our local grocery store (after tasting my son's earlier in the week). You bake them fresh (not just reheat) and they are very good. I will be serving that along with a veggie tray, some cheese and crackers, a shrimp ring, and some odds and ends. I am also making my DS's favorite dessert, Oreo cookies and cream ice box dessert, made with cool whip and vanilla pudding. I make it only when we have company so that there is not too much left over, just enough for DS. I plan to eat the shrimp and veggies from the veggie tray primarily. I will be busy serving, etc. so it shouldn't be too tempting. I also plan to eat some chicken before the guests arrive so I am not tempted by those blasted Stromboli. I am highly motivated to stay compliant now that all that holiday weight is finally history.

There is some interest in the 17 DD on another Spark team I belong to. Actually that is the team where I first learned of the diet from dear Lori, who I miss and hope to see back here again soon. The discussion on the other team tells me that more and more people are discovering this way of healthy eating, even if it is not 100% the 17DD. The principles are compatible, and the success speaks for itself.

Several of the Hope everyone is safe, warm, healthy, and enjoying a great weekend.

Fighting a bad case of cabin fever today. I did get out yesterday for craft day at church. Got stuck briefly on our street coming home. UGH! I am so mad because not ONE plow has plowed our street all winter! Our mail carrier just got stuck 15 minutes ago. Thankfully it is supposed to be in the 50's this coming week so it will finally be gone....no thanks to the city!
